Opis:: Stanisław Tabaczyński, a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences, passed away in November 2020. He was one of the most influential theoreticians of Stanisław Tabaczyński – pro memoria 183 archaeology in post-War Poland. He developed an original concept of the archaeo- logical process at the junction of the Annales school, the Poznań methodological school, and the inspirations from the Italian academic milieu cantered around the Polish-Italian Interdisciplinary Working Taskforce of Applied Sciences in Archaeology and Protection of Cultural Patrimony. Its main components com- prised long-term processes, ethnogenetic processes, and the polisemantisation of culture. He understood archaeology as the anthropology of the prehistoric past, outstretched between anthropology and history. He participated and ran numerous excavation projects in Poland and abroad. These comprised excavation campaigns carried out in the large-scale Millennium Research project in Poznań, Wrocław, Biskupin, Kołobrzeg, Grody Czerwieńskie and Nakło nad Notecią. His major achievement was the excavation of the early Medieval Sandomierz. He discovered a glassmaking workshop of the 7–8 th centuries on Torcello Island in the Venice Lagoon and participated in numerous field projects in Italy, France, and Algieria. He is the author of numerous books and articles. Among his most important publications are three-volume Theory and Practice of Archaeological Research, Przeszłość społeczna [The Social Past], Neolit środkowoeuropejski. Podstawy gospodarcze [Central European Neolithic. The economic foundations] and Archeologia średniowieczna – Problemy. Ź ródła, metody. Cele badawcze [Medieval Archaeology. Opis:: Автор статті, спираючись на джерела та методологію школи Анналів, вирізняє позиції двох провідних представників українського традиційного консерватизму як істориків, з одного боку, та політиків, з іншого, щодо ролі Польщі в історії українського народу та окреслення ними перспективи українсько-польських відносин. Автор виводить те спільне, що єднало обох мислителів у осмисленні ролі та місця Польщі в історії України та проєктуванні перспективи взаємин між обома народами, так і акцентує увагу на тому відмінному, що в цьому питанні розводило обох монархістів по різні сторони дискурсу. Автор визначає, що єднала обох мислителів як істориків насамперед визначена ними амбівалентна роль Польщі в історії українського народу. Польща, з одного боку, стала прикладом для України на шляху європеїзації та сприяла утворенню козацтва та гетьманства, а, з іншого, принесла Україні такі явища, як Гадяцька унія, шляхетська демократія та Варшавське перемир’я, які відіграли, на думку обох мислителів, негативну роль в історії України. Автор статті визначає і спільні погляди обох мислителів як чільних політиків монархічного напряму на конструктивну роль ідеології українського консерватизму, який сприяв встановленню рівності у відносинах між обома народами. Спільні погляди обидва діячі виявили і на необхідність створення в Галичині консервативної територіальної групи, складеної з поляків та українців, що була би покликана сприяти налагодженню дружніх відносин між обома народами. Серед відмінного в історичних позиціях обох українських мислителів щодо Польщі автор статті виділяє їхню характеристику польської політики українських гетьманів, зокрема Хмельницького. Відмінним для обох мислителів як політиків стало трактування ними доречності орієнтації України на Польщу. Тут Липинський врівноважував роль Польщі та Москви, а Томашівський виразно протиставляв конструктивну, на його переконання, пропольську орієнтацію України усім іншим орієнтаційним напрямам. Автор відзначає, що Липинський пропонував сепарацію України від Польщі як ключову засаду української політики, в той час як Томашівський ставив Польщу Україні у приклад успішної реалізації прозахідного напряму державної політики.
While studying Polish-Ukrainian relations, outstanding Ukrainian conservative thinkers, namely Vjacheslav Lypynskyi and Stepan Tomashivskyi, focused mainly on the problem of distinguishing the role of Poland in the history of the Ukrainian people and on the issue of orientation towards Poland as a factor in the emergence of the Ukrainian state. The role of Poland in the history of the Ukrainian people, according to conservatives, was twofold. On the one hand, it was Poland that paved the way for Ukraine to Europeanization, providing examples of state-style literature and culture. This constructive role of Poland was especially fruitful in comparison with the Asian influences of Moscow. In this context, the conservatives emphasized that these were the Poles who played a key role in the process of separating Ukrainians from Russia, promoting the rise and establishment of the Cossacks and the Hetmanate, as well as creating the very name “Ukraine”. Conversely, the conservatives negatively assessed the Treaty of Hadiach for Ukraine, which, in their opinion, was very rational, on the one hand, and contributed, on the other hand, to the extermination of the elite and aristocratic democracy, and which disorganized the nobility and made it republican by eliminating its chivalrous essence and adding destructive anarchism instead. The conservatives also sharply assessed the Treaty of Warsaw between Petliura and Pilsudski. Simultaneously, Ukrainian monarchists did not consider Poland a force that could play a role in the creation of the Ukrainian state, although they considered the territorial autonomy of Halychyna under Poland as the first stage in educating the citizens of Western Ukraine in the spirit of the state monarchical idea. They took the position of mutual understanding between Ukrainian conservatives and Halychyna Poles in achieving the autonomy of Ukrainian lands under Poland, although they condemned the concept of a federation of Poland and Ukraine in Halychyna under the conditions put forward by Halychyna Ukrainian National Democrats. Conservatives considered such a strategy doomed to failure without the creation of a conservative territorial group in Halychyna composed of local Poles and Ukrainians. Relying heavily on local Poles not affiliated with metropolitan Warsaw, they placed the main emphasis on the internal organization of the monarchists rather than on external allies, including Poland.
