Is school culture able to reduce the negative influence of work stressors present in teacher’s work? The goal of the study presented in this paper was to test a hypothetical mechanism, according to which school’s culture moderates the links between stressors and teachers’ job engagement. Relying on job demandsresources theoretical model, in the investigation conducted on a large (N=449) sample of teachers we found that although indeed the exposition to stress in an everyday teachers’ work is negatively related to teachers’ engagement, school culture serves as a buffer that moderates the relationship between stress and engagement. Among the teachers who perceived their school culture as supportive, stress did not reduce their engagement, while this effect was find in less supportive schools.

Abstract Background Representatives of helping professions who are working with socially maladjusted youths and children with developmental disorders are particularly exposed to occupational stress. The aim of the study was to evaluate mental and physical well-being, as well as their correlates and predictors in a group of employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres. Materials and Methods A total of 96 employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres took part in the study. The following psychometric tools were used: the Psychosocial Working Conditions Questionnaire, the Mini-COPE, the LOT-R, and the GSES. Results The results obtained indicate that people working in helping professions experience mental and physical health problems. Only 3% of the subjects declared they sleep all night. Over 40% and over 35% of the subjects estimate they suffer from low mood and irritation episodes, respectively, rather frequently or continually. Subjects with poorer mental health are more likely to use Helplessness, Avoidance behaviours, or Turning to religion to cope with stress. The strongest predictor of mental well-being is the sense of self-efficacy. Whereas, the strongest predictor of physical well-being is the ability to cope with stress by giving into the feeling of Helplessness.   Conclusions The study demonstrated poor mental and physical well-being of the subjects. A statistically significant correlation was found between sex and the level of mental and physical health. Employees working at youth educational centres and sociotherapy centres with better mental and physical well-being had a stronger sense of self-efficacy and a higher level of life optimism.

The emergence and rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 caused uncertainty about our health, jobs, and the education system. For teachers, changes in workplaces and the breakdown of interpersonal relationships during the pandemic caused even greater stress levels in what is already known to be a stressful job. We wanted to find out if a positive or negative attitude towards online work influenced levels of stress and mental well-being, perceived difficulties at work, subjective evaluation of received support, and effectiveness of remote work during the first wave of SARS-CoV-2 in Poland. Data was collected using a questionnaire, the PSS 10 scale and another scale based on GHQ12 and GH30. Nearly one-third of the respondents indicated positive aspects of online education. Those who could see the positive aspects of online education showed themselves better adapted to the new form of working and had higher results in all four scales that we researched. They handled online tools, used synchronous methods, conducted educational activities more often, and felt competent during online work. Supporting the effectiveness of educators by improving the competencies that they need for this new form of working is vital with regard to the changes within the school institution.

Opis:
Materiał i metody W badaniach wzięło udział 166 nauczycieli (145 kobiet i 21 mężczyzn) w wieku 23–67 lat (M = 43,02, SD = 9,98). Med. Pr. 2019;70(3):343–361
Background In recent years, many scientific studies, both in Poland and in the world, have proven that teaching is considered a profession with a high level of stress. The experience of prolonged stress and a lack of abilities to meet challenges can lead to the occurrence of chronic fatigue in teachers. Of key importance in coping with stress are personal resources, which include humor described by humor styles and coping humor. Material and Methods The study involved 166 teachers (145 women and 21 men) aged 23–67 (M = 43.02, SD = 9.98). The following tools were used in the research: the Coping Humor Scale (CHS), the Humor Style Questionnaire (HSQ), the Sense of Stress at Work (PSS-10P) (the Polish modification of the 10-item Perceived Stress Scale – PSS-10), the Checklist Individual Strength (CIS20R) and a personal questionnaire. Results In the light of the research, teachers were characterized by a medium level of the sense of stress at work, coping humor and chronic fatigue. Affiliative and self-enhancing styles dominated in this group. The more often teachers used the affiliative and self-enhancing styles, the less likely they were to experience chronic fatigue. The sense of stress at work mediated the relationship between the positive dimensions of humor and chronic fatigue and its dimensions. In contrast, aggressive and self-deprecating humor styles were not associated with chronic fatigue. Conclusions It can be hypothesized that positive humor protects against chronic fatigue. The sense of stress at work plays an important role in explaining this relationship. Med Pr. 2019;70(3):343–61

Opis:
Wśród chorób przewlekłych największą grupę stanowią choroby układu krążenia (30%), nowotwory (13%), choroby układu oddechowego (7%) i cukrzyca (2%).
Chronic diseases (ChDs) pose an essential problem from an individual, social and economic point of view. It is estimated that they account for 60% of all deaths worldwide, and this share is expected to rise to 72% by 2020. The most prevalent are cardiovascular diseases (30%), cancers (13%), respiratory diseases (7%), and diabetes (2%). Their major risk factors include unhealthy diet, the lack of physical activity, and tobacco smoking. Of significance are also occupational and environmental hazards. Among teachers, the factor with the highest impact is noise, reported by 25% of male and 38% of female teachers. In Poland, there are no databases on ChDs or risk factors in teachers; only voice disorders are well-recognized as an occupational disease. Only a few studies of health and lifestyle were conducted among teachers in Poland, but they cannot be generalized because they were carried out with different methods, in small groups of people and in various regions in the country. A representative study carried out by Statistics Poland (GUS) among education employees (with no separate data for teachers) revealed that the most prevalent were musculoskeletal disorders, including back-pain (21.9%), as well as painfulness of the neck, shoulder, hand, hip and leg (10% in each case). Headaches and eye fatigue were found in 14.6%; stress, anxiety and depression in 7.3%; and cardiovascular disorders in 4.6% of the study population. Defining health problems in this professional group is an important public health issue which should enable reducing the prevalence and adverse health effects of ChDs.

Opis:
The article is devoted to the issue of occupational stress, regarding educational professions. The tension is caused, among others, by social beliefs related to the privileged professional position of educators, the necessity to implement numerous, often contradictory or unrealistic expectations, as well as the attitudes presented by students, parents or superiors. What is more, maintaining balance between personal and professional life and the inconveniences resulting from physical conditions also turns out to be problematic. In the light of current knowledge on the possibilities of coping with stress, we can specify certain counter-measures, the implementation of which can bring improvement in terms of teachers’ functioning and well-being. This issue is important especially in the light of knowledge about the impact of the tension consequences not only on the teacher but also on the recipient of their actions – the student.

This paper aims to shed some light on the correlation between teacher stress, on the one hand, and motivation of teachers and students, on the other hand – observed in an EFL environment. The data sample comprising responses given by EFL teachers and students from the primary education cycle was collected via the teacher stress measurement scale and motivation for learning scale, applied for teachers and students, respectively. Apart from the basic descriptive statistics used to describe the relationship between the variables, the paper’s methodology is also characterised by applying the Pearson correlation coefficient. The results led to interesting conclusions; while, as expected, workload directly affects stress levels of teachers, who, following the results, are highly motivated to work with teenagers, contrary to what could be believed, teacher motivation is not directly related to student motivation, what could be further analysed in the future studies.

For assessing the occupational load the Meister questionnaire was used. We found that teachers percieved their occupational stress worse than firefighters and reached the 2nd degree of load. They complained mostly about the factor of overload and factors of the stress reactions – fatigue, mental overload and unacceptability to perform pedagogical work in the same intensity for a long time. Firefighters achieved better results (1st degree of load), even better than the population norm. An explanation may be found in the fact that firefighters represent a selected population of emotionally, psychically and physically resistant individuals.

Remote education in the era of the coronavirus pandemic was a challenge many teachers were not prepared for. The challenge and a number of changes that the transition to remote education has triggered may have resulted in additional stressful experiences for the teaching profession. This article is a theoretical and research paper and its purpose is to draw a picture of these experiences, to identify the stressors in the remote teaching situation and to examine the general level of stress currently experienced by teachers. The study involved 66 teachers working at different levels of education. A diagnostic survey (online questionnaire) and Plopa and Makarowski’s PSQ (Perceived Stress Questionnaire) examining emotional tension, external stress, intrapsychic stress and general level of perceived stress were used as the research method. The study outcomes show that some teachers may experience emotional tension, an increased feeling of fatigue, irritability or an accompanying lack of energy. However, it seems that the situation of transitioning to remote teaching did not outweigh the ability, resources or capacity of the teachers surveyed to meet the demands placed on them under the circumstances.

The present study was conducted to investigate occupational stress and general health among university professors, stress is measured by the Walter Gmelch Index (FSI), while general health was screened by the D. Goldberg GHQ-28 test. A collection of qualitative and quantitative data was carried out under the assumption that the stress at work perceived by the person correlates with his general health result. One hundred and twenty-five students (101 men, 20 women; aged 29-62) took part in this study with a kit that includes the two indices (FSI and GHQ-28) and a set of sociodemographic variables. The results revealed that a large part of the participants suffering from chronic stress and almost half of the subjects (48.76%) suffering from psychic disorders or somatization. The study also affirms our starting hypothesis on a significant correlation between the general state of health and the state of perceived stress. Statistical analysis also reveals a correlation between GHQ and certain institutional variables (grade and seniority at work). This study expresses the importance of a psychological first aid kit available to health professionals which makes it possible to estimate the prevalence of psychological distress in a given population and to detect psychosomatic cases which escape the general practitioner.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in restrictions in most countries. One of them was to replace traditional education in schools with online learning. Such a change could provoke a build-up of negative feelings due to insecurity and loneliness. In addition, reducing daily physical activity and closing sports venues can have a detrimental effect on health. The article presents the results of the study of the impact of distance learning on the daily physical activity and condition of physical education teachers in Poland, as well as the subjective perception of physical and mental health in this professional group. Google forms were used to collect the data. The research tool was a questionnaire. The analysis showed that distance learning had a significant negative impact on the physical and mental health of the study group. The impact of distance learning on physical and mental health is gender independent. Teachers more often negatively assessed their physical and mental health compared to the studies in previous years. Daily physical activity of the subjects decreased, and most of them increased their body weight. Less than 3% of the surveyed teachers during the blockade felt happy and full of life.

This paper focuses on the connection between workload and job satisfaction among teachers. Research and everyday observation show that the teaching profession brings many highly satisfying situations in combination with situations of increased load, whose negative consequences probably have negative effects on job satisfaction. However, in the case of teachers we can observe a relatively high level of job satisfaction despite relatively high levels of subjective load. A possible explanation may lie in the fact that teachers, at least those who voluntarily remain in their profession, probably manage to counterbalance their (either genuine or perceived) excessive workload by means of other factors when evaluating their work in its entirety. These factors include personality traits related to performance dispositions, temperament, the tendency to select suitable coping strategies, or attempts to maintain a healthy lifestyle, plus – as this research shows – various characteristics with a positive effect on stress management (neuropsychological stability, hardiness, sense of coherence, optimism, etc.).
