Introduction and objective. For many years, Europe has been struggling with the problem of an aging society. It is obvious that everyone would like to live longer while retaining good psycho-physical health and social activity. This, however, is influenced by many factors, such as health, which may be a form of limitation in everyday life or in performing social roles in accordance with the norms. Objective. The aim of the study was to analyze the use of scales for functional assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in individuals aged 80+ in various EU countries. Materials and method. Potentially essential articles were obtained through review and analysis of the PUBMED (MEDLINE) database by entering the following keywords: functional activities of daily living, ADL, IADL, complex activities of daily living, basic activities of daily living. Article selection was based on the following inclusion criteria set by the authors and the appointed Advisory Board. Results. Assessment of independence and fitness of elderly persons in the area of basic and complex activities of daily living provides information on the quality of life of senior individuals. Analysis of research data used for comparing functional independence of senior persons on the basis of ADL and IADL scales is difficult due to the discrepancies, which may be confusing for researchers studying this area. Conclusions. The use of different methodologies for assessing functional fitness of elderly individuals makes it difficult to interpret, compare and practically apply the outcomes. Standardization of research methods used for assessment of basic and complex daily living activities in 80+ persons would enable comparing the obtained data in an interdisciplinary perspective.

A traditional frequency analysis is not appropriate for observation of properties of non-stationary signals. This stems from the fact that the time resolution is not defined in the Fourier spectrum. Thus, there is a need for methods implementing joint time-frequency analysis (t/f) algorithms. Practical aspects of some representative methods of time-frequency analysis, including Short Time Fourier Transform, Gabor Transform, Wigner-Ville Transform and Cone-Shaped Transform are described in this paper. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between the width of the time-frequency window and its frequency content in the t/f analysis. This property is not valid in the case of a wavelet transform. A wavelet is a wave-like oscillation, which forms its own “wavelet window”. Compression of the wavelet narrows the window, and vice versa. Individual wavelet functions are well localized in time and simultaneously in scale (the equivalent of frequency). The wavelet analysis owes its effectiveness to the pyramid algorithm described by Mallat, which enables fast decomposition of a signal into wavelet components.

The main objective of this paper is to produce an applications-oriented review covering infrared techniques and devices. At the beginning infrared systems fundamentals are presented with emphasis on thermal emission, scene radiation and contrast, cooling techniques, and optics. Special attention is focused on night vision and thermal imaging concepts. Next section concentrates shortly on selected infrared systems and is arranged in order to increase complexity; from image intensifier systems, thermal imaging systems, to space-based systems. In this section are also described active and passive smart weapon seekers. Finally, other important infrared techniques and devices are shortly described, among them being: non-contact thermometers, radiometers, LIDAR, and infrared gas sensors.

We exploit the independence of the spacings in exponential populations with location λ and scale δ to develop simple ways of dealing with inference on the location parameter, namely by developing an analysis of scale in the homocedastic independent k-sample problem.

Due to the perishable nature and biological nature of the production process there is difficulty in scheduling the supply of vegetables to market demand. The vegetables are subjected to higher prices and quantity risks with changing consumers’ demand and production conditions. The core focus of this study was to reach, measure, and analyzing the marketing risk level of vegetables produced in Rubavu District, Rwanda. The study based on a survey of 90 vegetable sellers. At least 30 couple of wholesalers and middlemen visited Rubavu District to trade the vegetables for various retails. Primary data collected through structured questionnaires and secondary data sources used. A Five-point Likert associated with the bivariate analysis was used to rank the risk level while the full model of Linear Regression Analysis and factor analysis were used to identifier the majors’ factors associated with the risk in vegetable marketing in Rwanda. The mean score results derived based on Likert-Scales, indicated that “low seasonal product prices, weak market channels, poor logistics, and market communications, poor product handling and packaging, lack of storage and higher perishability’ identified to be the most important sources of risk. Therefore, the use of forwards’ contracts; getting market information, sell at crude prices due to perishability, contractual arrangements, maintaining good relationships and restoring the storage network system were of significant concerns for overcoming the recognized risks.

Opis:
South African small-scale sugarcane growers are faced with high production costs that have an impact on agricultural efficiency and their ability to adopt  newly available technologies for production purposes. This study employed the Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) approach and Truncated regression model to analyse data collected from 160 growers. The findings reported technical, cost and allocative mean scores to be 95.6,% 55.2%, and 57.5% in the Felixton region whereas 95.2%, 69.1% and 72.6% were achieved in the Amatikulu area, respectively. The age, extension support, and off-farm income had a negative effect on agricultural efficiency followed by positive effect of experience, education, access to credit and employment that showed positive relationship. We propose government to work jointly with mill owners to train, develop extension officers and subsidise inputs and equipment to address the poor allocation of resources because of financial constraints currently faced by small-scale sugarcane growers.

Niniejszy artykuł analizuje teksty pamiętnikarskie o życiu młodych Żydów w Żółkwi we wschodniej Galicji przed II wojną światową, ich dojrzewaniu oraz przemianach osobistych i politycznych, prowadzących ich do imigracji do Palestyny. Skupia uwagę przede wszystkim na lukach w często fragmentarycznych tekstach autobiograficznych napisanych przez Szymona Sameta, pochodzącego z tego miasta, który został uznanym zawodowym dziennikarzem w Izraelu. Rekonstruuje brakujące elementy rodzinnej narracji o bracie Sameta i specyfice ośrodków, w których młodzi ludzie przygotowywali się do wyjazdu na początku lat 20. XX wieku. Artykuł pokazuje, jak ważne dla interpretacji autobiografii i tekstów pamiątkowych może być wskazanie takich luk.
This article offers a close reading of personal memoirs about coming of age in Żółkiew in Eastern Galicia and about transitions on the way to immigration to Mandatory Palestine before WWII. It focuses on gaps in the fragmentary autobiographical texts written by Shimon Samet, a native of the town, who became an accomplished professional journalist in Israel, and reconstructs missing pieces of narrative about Samet’s brother and about the Zionist micro universe of transition and training sites in Galicia of the early 1920’s. It points to significant explanatory possibilities gained by identifying such gaps in personal and commemorative narratives.

This study presents a comprehensive synoptic analysis of one of the most violent storms recorded in recent years in the northwestern part of Poland, which occurred on August 11, 2017. Its development took place ahead of a waving cold front in the tropical air mass, downstream of the upper-level trough. The thunderstorms formed over Lower Silesia in the afternoon and moved towards Gdańsk Pomerania to occur over the Baltic Sea after midnight on August 12, 2017, where they gradually disappeared. As the thunderstorms moved through this area, they ranged from single convective cells and unorganized multicell storms through supercell thunderstorms to mesoscale convective systems in the form of bow echo squall lines and the mesoscale convective vortex (MCV). The convective system, evolving over time, fulfilled the derecho criteria. Its development was related to the presence of both the upper and mid-level jet stream, which supported the formation of a strong rear inflow jet (RIJ) in the rear part of the convective system, being one of the main factors generating the formation of a bow echo squall line with strong wind gusts. The maximum wind gusts recorded on August 11, 2017, are among the highest in the history of Polish measurements and amounted to 42 m/s in Elbląg, 36 m/s in Chrząstów, 35 m/s in Gniezno, and around 30 m/s at several other stations.

The study investigates the sensitivity of numerical crack propagation estimations based on the Nasgro equation. The equation is widely used for crack propagation calculations since it considers the whole range of crack propagation speed from threshold to critical values of stress intensity factor range (∆K). The presented investigation is based on the actual results of the full scale fatigue test (FSFT) of the PZL-130 ‘Orlik’ TC-II aircraft. We provide a brief description of the test and the general approach followed in crack propagation estimations originally carried out after the test. The obtained results are verified in terms of variation of the input data. Overall results are compared and discussed.

This paper assessed the trend of productivity of the existing six Nigerian ports. Secondary data was extracted from National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) Annual Reports, Nigeria Port Authority (NPA) Annual Reports, and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Annual reports. Using the Data Envelopment Analysis technique, it was discovered that Calabar Port had been under-utilized towards the achievement of the required results. On the contrary, Rivers Port requires technical touches in her operations. As a liquid bulk port, the time of loading and discharging of commodities are often more than any other type of port and the turnaround time at this port are often more. Scale optimization is also required in Rivers Port. Inferentially, Lagos Port has been operating on optimal scale size but fluctuating managerial efficiency was experienced in the operation years. As a matter of findings, Tin Can Island has a similar trend to that of Onne Port with low productivities in the pre-concession period which improved consistently in the post-concession year of 2010 till the year 2015. It was also observed that Tin Can Island Port operated on under-utilization of inputs resources in the pre-concession periods till the post-concession year 2010. This reflects the element of wastefulness concerning both inputs and outputs quantities. Delta Port experienced fluctuating scale and technical efficiency trends in both pre and post concession years. Hence, it is observed that productivities' trends vary among the concessioned Nigerian Ports. These could be as a result of the influence of varied exogenous and endogenous factors on individual Port.

Regulation models based on the human cognitive systems and ethics are embodied in social institutions. Among the issues of the processes of urbanization, secularization, anti-war speeches, the fight against poverty and discrimination, spirituality became an important subject of research especially in the Post-Soviet sociological space, where the common elements of the social development were widely represented in different kinds of research, but the impact of religion and spiritual activity was underappreciated and was almost not studied. Some of the approaches and terms were borrowed from the Western sociology, as well as the liberal approach of market economy was initially studied on the basis of materials copied from American and European textbooks. Very soon scholars discovered that the notion of spirituality had different connotations on the territory of the former Soviet republics, where the hunger for spirituality was inherited (Mariański 2009: 149-179) since the omnipresent and ubiquitous communist ideology concerned the social life, including the religious activity of the populations of the former Soviet Union regions. Spirituality also began to awaken interest of social science as the knowledge of the organization of social life. Since the USSR collapse, the concepts of, spirituality as well as new spirituality become an important novelty for the sociological science, sociological reviews and conferences. At the same time, spirituality started to be used as an argument in the political and economic discussions that provoked the critics of this concept among scholars as well as inspired scepticism in society. The presented paper deals with the cognitive approach and combines the sociological approach with analysis of spirituality and the economic analysis of the intellectual systems and computing machines, especially, the “cognitive” processes of machine learning with the use of software for human beings to determine the requirements for the regulation mechanisms of the behavior human beings and machines in the digital era.

This study investigated the gender analysis of access to formal credit by both male and female small-scale farmers in the Greater Letaba Municipality. The study precisely identified and described the socio-economic characteristics of female and male small-scale farmers, analysed and compared factors influencing access to formal credit by both female and male small-scale farmers and determined the perceptions of female small-scale farmers towards the credit system. In collecting the primary data, structured questionnaires were administered on 140 respondents (70 females and 70 males) using stratified random technique. The study employed descriptive statistics, principal component analysis and probit model to analyse collected data. The probit regression model discovered that farm size, land ownership, gender, age, collateral and extension services had a significant positive influence on small-scale farmers` formal credit access. Based on the study findings, a set of recommendations for achieving equitable formal credit access by female and male small-scale farmers was put forward.

In the Red River Delta (RRD) of Vietnam, small-pumping systems are one of main systems for paddy irrigation. It is imperative to analyze the operation and maintenance performance of irrigation systems by using the input factors when applying pricing mechanisms in the irrigation sector in Vietnam. In this study, based on the data of 48 irrigation systems managed by teams under irrigation companies, the non-parametric program, Data Envelopment Analysis, was used to measure the technical efficiency and scale efficiency for small-pumping scale irrigation systems in the Red River Delta. The seven input factors were the annual direct and indirect labor, materials, electricity, recurrent maintenance, overhead, and depreciation cost, and an output factor was the paddy areas irrigated by the systems. The results demonstrated that the average technical efficiency scores under constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale were 0.924 and 0.946, respectively. Thus, the wasted inputs were suggested to be 7.6% and 5.4% of the current input level, respectively. The average scale efficiency score was 0.977 and therefore, some 72.9% of the Decision-Making Units should adjust their input scales to achieve the efficiency in input factors.

W przemyśle stalowniczym podczas procesu produkcyjnego powstają duże ilości odpadów, wśród których znajdują się żużle wielkopiecowe, żużle stalownicze, pyły, szlamy i zgorzelina. Analiza termiczna w metalurgii może być stosowana do badań fizyko-chemicznych materiałów mineralnych, metali i ich stopów, odpadów oraz ubocznych produktów z procesu produkcyjnego. Analiza termiczna DTA (Differential Thermal Analysis – różnicowa analiza termiczna) lub DSC (Differential Scanning Calorymetry – skaningowa kalorymetria różnicowa) jest stosowana podczas badania metali oraz ich stopów. Technika ta jest stosowana do określania temperatury i efektów cieplnych występujących przemian, głównie topnienia, przemian fazowych, ciepła właściwego oraz entalpii.
During the manufacturing process in the steel industry, large amounts of waste products are produced, among which there are blast furnace slags, steelmaking slags, dusts, sludges and mill scales. In metallurgy, thermal analysis can be used to determine physico-chemical properties of minerals, metals and their alloys, waste and by-products of the manufacturing process. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) or Differential Scanning Calorymetry (DSC) are used during the study of metals and their alloys. Opis:
The study aimed to construct and validate the Inclusive Competences Scale for educators (InComSedu). The basis for item generation was the “Profile of Inclusive Teachers”, a document developed by the european Agency for Special Needs and Inclusive education. Items were measured on a 5-point Likert scale. In order to test the validity and internal consistency of the scale, item analysis, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach’s α were used. on a sample of Slovenian educators factor analyses proved the InComSedu had seven subscales: Team working and cooperation with others, Implementing knowledge about inclusive education and support, reflecting on and learning from inclusive practice, optimising challenges and approaching interdisciplinary, Accepting professional responsibility for each child’s development, Promoting resilience and professionality, and empowering children’s life skills. results indicate that InComSedu is a valid and reliable instrument for the evaluation of inclusive competences among educators.
