The aim of the article is to indicate the assumptions which are the basis for setting satire against grotesque by Boris Eichenbaum in his study Jak jest zrobiony „Płaszcz” Gogola. By analyzing Eichenbaum’s argumentation, the author claims that the formalistic conception of literariness, which stresses the autonomous character of an artistic work, was conducive to the tendency for a depreciation of satire and ennoblement of grotesque.

Opis:
Satire is a form of the presentation of reality which relies on distortion and deformation. The media make frequent use of satirical forms of expression. Freedom of expression, including satirical expression, is guaranteed in the Constitution and media law. On the other hand, the civil and penal law protect the individuals being criticized and satirized from unfair or spiteful targeting. As far as the missions of freedom of speech and guardian-of-democracy of the media are concerned, article No. 212 of the Penal Code raises some serious doubts as to its undemocratic nature. The article introduces prison sentences as a punishment for libel/slander, which might be used by the politicians to silence dissident journalists. The Civil Law is not so restrictive, however, the very fact of being sued can seriously damage the financial condition of a given newspaper/website, which in turn may lead to avoidance of tackling controversial issues and self-censorship.|It is surprising how poor courts are at analyzing satirical forms of expression, and how contradictory sentencing is in cases of a similar nature. The specificity of satirical forms of expression should become the subject of extensive debate among journalists and lawyers.

This article analyses the novel “La vieille dame du riad” (2011) by Fouad Laroui, a Moroccan-Dutch writer of French expression. We examine the strategies (generic and intertextual) used by the novelist to ridicule the Orientalist prejudices which persist in the current time. Generic hybridity (the presence of some elements of the detective story, fantasy novel and oriental tale) is used to develop the satirical dimension of the novel.

Tuwim used verse satires to create polemical and ironic portraits of individual people (the main figure being a nationalist journalist and literary critic Stanisław Pieńkowski) as well as to ridicule state institutions, ideologies and political parties. The author also analyses pamphlet-like lyrical poems, columns and literary criticism by Julian Tuwim. In conclusion the author describes some elements of the cultural milieu which the poet refers to in his satirical writing (popular culture and the media, totalitarian ideologies, mass-society).

Satire is a literary genre with esthetic value determined by laughter. Every kind of laughter is specific for different periods of economic and social development. The forms of material production underlie the perception of the comic. Satirical traditions are intrinsic to national ideological systems. Satire commits seditious attacks against social ideologies. It influences the politics and the politics influences the satire which is only possible with a certain level of sociopolitical development of a society. Satirical tradition can be formed and established only at conditions of democratic political tradition, otherwise it takes perverted shapes.

Opis:
For many years, Israeli culture recoiled from dealing with the Holocaust from a humorous or satirical perspective. Since the 1990, a new unofficial path of memory has begun taking shape in Israel. Texts that combine the Holocaust with humor are a major aspect of this new memory. The case study includes three skits by The Chamber Quintet (Hahamishia Hakamerit, “Matar” Productions, Channels 2-Tela’ad, Channel 1, 1993-1997), the first who dared to use satire to criticize the Holocaust memory agents in Israel. The paper analyzes the changes in the attitude towards Holocaust humor in Israel through theories of trauma and secondary trauma. Contrary to perceptions that these satirical skits disrespect the Holocaust and its survivors, the paper argues that these skits do not constitute cheapening mechanisms, but are nurtured by pain and criticism of a post-traumatic society.

Opis:
The paper deals with the semantic and structural specificity of political extravaganza as a genre of dramaturgy. The history of this literary and dramatic kind and also its scantily explored genetic connection with the dramatic pamphlet, which arose in the 18th-century English theatre, are briefly retraced. Its artistic peculiarity is investigated by using material from several plays of Bernard Shaw, which were written from the 1920s–1930s (The Apple Cart, Too True to be Good, Geneva, On the Rocks). The genre definition was used by the playwright for the first time as a subtitle to the play The Apple Cart, the first performance of it took place in Warsaw in 1929; the extravaganza was staged by Arnold Szyfman at the “Teatr Polski”. Special attention is paid in the article to such features of political extravaganza, as paradox, the grotesque and eccentricity, which become apparent at some levels of dramatic text: in the linguo-stylistic originality of the tirades and dialogues, as well as in the extensive stage directions and sometimes in the titles, in the characters of personages, in construction of the plots and in the composition of the plays. Of primary interest is also the eccentric treatment of the artistic time in the plays based on the historical personalities or episodes, and in the introduction of fantastical elements to the dramatic action. The essential role of the concentrated eccentricity in the sharpening and the emphasized topicalization of political satire is also discussed in the paper.

Opis:
The Arthurian legends have fascinated and inspired people for ages. Le Morte D’Arthur by Sir Thomas Malory is one of the best compilations of the stories about King Arthur and his peers. This romance deals with the enchanting world of knightly rituals and the ideals of the chivalric code. It is not a typical romance blindly glorifying the medieval world, though. Written in the time when these ideals are passing, the prose is dominated on the one hand, by melancholy and sentiment, but on the other, by irony and ambiguity. Malory seems to question the chivalric code through inconsistencies of his characters’ behaviour, and absurdity of some situations they are involved in. The paper will focus on the ambivalent and comic picture of the courtly love ideals in Malory’s prose. The main source of failure of some of the Arthurian knights in this aspect of knightly life is the clash between the real chivalric practice and the imagined ideals they pursue.
