    Opis:
    With this paper we try to contribute to the debate on the nature of research intensive universities and the chances to create this type of institution in Poland. Research universities are presented as elite, flagship institutions for educating students mostly at the doctoral level and to produce the bulk of the research output. Examples of world-class research intensive universities from various countries are presented. It is shown that intensified competition among universities exists to prove their performance through global university league tables or ranking exercises and it is discussed whether Poland is at the stage to create at least one such institution playing important role in that competition. We argue that the establishment of a University of the Polish Academy of Sciences could be a solution. This University stands to become a unique research institution in Poland and one of very few establishments of its type in Central and Eastern Europe. The University will conduct scientific research and provide programs of the highest standard, exploiting the research and teaching potential of the PAS institutes as well as the competence and experience of members of the Academy's corporation. It is intended as a higher education institution with a decentralized organizational structure, based on the PAS research institutes. The University of the Polish Academy of Sciences will have a quality-boosting impact on the PAS institutes as well as initiate their consolidation and reorganization in the field of teaching.

    An effective planning of postgraduate studies requires not only defining the program content, but also the manners of its delivery. The present paper presents the solutions for this issue applied at postgraduate studies concerning managing a revitalization processes. The author elaborates on the need of education in the field of the revitalization, which has led to establishing by the Warsaw School of Economics and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow the postgraduate studies “The Revitalization of Cities – the organization and financing”. A special form of classes, uncommon to other postgraduate studies, were so called ‘technical visits’. The article discusses the preparation, organization as well as evaluation of the application of this method.

    W artykule opisano długoletnią tradycję edukacji z zakresu ochrony zabytków architektonicznych, prowadzoną na Wydziale Architektury Politechniki Wrocławskiej. Scharakteryzowano zarówno dawne, trwające od 1945 r., jak i aktualnie działania. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na najnowszą inicjatywę dydaktyczną – studia podyplomowe „Badania i konserwacja dziedzictwa architektonicznego”. Studia te stanowią trzeci stopień edukacji, mogący uzupełnić program studiów inżynierskich oraz magisterskich i są kierowane do absolwentów studiów II stopnia.
    The paper depicts the long tradition of university education in the field of preservation of historic monuments provided by the Faculty of Architecture at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology. It describes both current and past activities, reaching as back as to the year 1945. Much of attention is paid to the newest initiative of the Faculty – the postgraduate studies named Research and Preservation of Architectural Heritage. These studies offer a considerable extension to the curriculum of both the BS and MS studies in architecture and therefore constitute an unofficial third level of university education. They are targeted on holders of the Master’s degree.
