The article presents the results of the research related to the decomposition of polylactic acid (PLA)/halloysite nanotube (HNTs) biocomposites into a simple organic form. After manufacturing the nanocomposites, the evaluation of the composting process simulation was conducted using the biodegradation method. First, the selected properties of PLA/HNTs biocomposites, such as density, water absorption, and impact strength were tested. Next, the impact of the composting process on the behavior of PLA/HNTs composites was investigated from 30 to 90 days. Finally, the loss of mass of the composites, hardness, and the structural changes of biocomposites under the composting conditions before and after the composting were evaluated using SEM microscopy. The results showed that the PLA modified by HNT particles has biodegradation-friendly properties and therein is fully suitable for organic recycling. Due to this, in the coming years, it may contribute to the replacement of non-biodegradability polymers, i.e. polyolefins and polyesters, and reduction of plastic packaging wastes.

Opis:
A novel polynitro compound, 2,2’-bis(trinitromethyl)-5,5’-azo- 1,2,3,4-tetrazole, was designed and investigated at the DFT-B3LYP/6-31G(d) level. Its properties, such as electronic structure, IR spectrum, heat of formation, thermodynamic properties and crystal structure, were predicted. This compound is most likely to crystallize in the P21 space group, and the corresponding cell parameters are Z = 2, a = 5.46 Å, b = 9.72 Å, c = 14.05 Å, α = 90°, β = 90°, γ = 90°. In addition, the detonation velocity and pressure were also estimated by using the empirical Kamlet-Jacobs equations, and were predicted to be 8.28 km/s and 31.61 GPa respectively. The oxygen balance of this compound is +13.79%, which indicates that it could serve as an oxidizer. Bond dissociation energy calculations show that the C(13)-N(21)O2 and C(14)-N(30)O2 bonds are the locations of thermal decomposition and that this compounds meets the thermal stability requirements as an exploitable explosive. Opis:
Mechanical grinding (MG) is an effective method to regulate the pore structure and surface properties of mineral material. Grinding diatomite samples were prepared by horizontal sander under different grinding time. The pore structure and surface properties of grinding samples were characterized systematically by the particle size analysis, low temperature nitrogen adsorption, MIP, fractal theory, XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR and surface hydroxyl density analysis. The humidity control performance (HCP) of grinding diatomite was tested under different temperature and relative humidity. The relationship among pore structure, surface properties and HCP was analyzed. The results show that macroporous is more easily damaged by mechanical force than mesoporous, and the internal blind holes structure can be opened. The HCP of diatomite is positively correlated with the specific surface area, mesoporous volume, the inhomogeneity of macroporous structure and the number of hydroxyl groups, while negatively correlated with the proportion of macroporous volume.

This paper discusses the enhancement in the ballistic performance of double base rocket propellants (DBRPs) by the addition of different copper salts vs lead salts as burning rate modifiers through stable combustion and the formation of a plateau region in the low pressure region. Compositions based on DBRPs containing different percentages of lead stearate and different types of copper salts were prepared and studied. For comparison, a conventional DBRP was studied. The ignition temperature and heat of combustion were determined experimentally, and the mechanical properties were measured and evaluated. The performance in terms of ballistic characteristics (burning rate, operating pressure) were measured at different throat diameters (8, 8.5, 9, 9.5 mm) and at different temperatures (−20 and 50 °C). Specific impulses were calculated using the ICT thermodynamic code. The experimental data from the proportional study indicate that the compositions containing the studied burning rate modifiers are superior to the original DBRP in respect of ballistic performance and mechanical properties.

This study aims to obtain an accurate prediction model of mechanical properties of woven fabric to achieve customer satisfaction. Samples of plain woven fabric were produced from different yarn counts and blend ratios of cotton and polyester of weft yarn at different weft densities. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, bending stiffness and elongation% in both the warp and weft directions were tested. The prediction model was based on Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). For each model, thirty-nine samples were used for training and fifteen for testing prediction performance. Findings indicated that the ANN achieved a perfect performance in predicting all properties.

The internal combustion engine plays a vital role in transportation, industry, and shipping. However, diesel as one of the main fuels for internal combustion engines, caused many environmental and human health problems. In order to solve the problems, more researchers have been committed to the research of alternative fuels. Biodiesel is a renewable, sustainable alternative fuel, and its characteristics are similar to traditional diesel. It can be mixed with pure diesel. It has been found that a mix with pure diesel in a certain ratio can effectively reduce the negative effects caused by its characteristics, improve the combustion performance, and reduce the NOx and PM emissions. This article mainly reviews the effects of the mixture of biodiesel and diesel on engine combustion characteristics and exhaust emissions, including three parts: part (1) summarizes and analyzes the biodiesel’s production and characteristics, part (2) analyzes the engine’s performance under different working conditions, and part (3) studies and analyzes the exhaust emission under different working conditions.

Opis:
Consumer choice and behavior are changing and focusing on comfortable clothing along with fitting. Elastic yarn or fabric is necessary to achieve this comfortableness. By making elastic yarn and using elastic material in fabric production, elastic cloths are produced with proper stretchability and recovery. For that, core-spun yarn was used, but due to a lack of recovery performance, dual core-spun yarn has been developed. Different elastane ratios, linear density, and filaments were used in the dual core-spun yarn according to achieve desired stretchability. In this study, denim fabric performances were evaluated by designing different composite/hybrid dual core-spun yarn with a combination of cotton fiber and filaments. Different elastane linear densities with different filaments, PET/PTT, PTT, and PET, were used, and it was found that using finer elastane in dual core-spun yarn, strength, and unevenness are increased, and elongation decreased. Using PET/PTT filament increases hairiness, and using PTT filament increases elongation. For fabrics, coarser elastane in the dual core-spun yarns has higher stiffness, elasticity, and shrinkage. Fabric with PTT showed higher weight change and stiffness, whereas PET filament-based fabric samples have good strength and low stiffness. In addition, a multiple regression analysis was carried out for yarn and fabric properties, and mathematical models were developed.

The main advantages of modified double-base (MDB) propellants are wide range of burning rates, high energy output, as well as enhanced thrust. This study reports on the effect of potential oxidizers − potassium perchlorate (KP) or ammonium perchlorate (AP), stoichiometric binary mixture of the oxidizer (KP or AP) with metal fuel (Al), and energetic nitramine (HMX) on combustion characteristics of MDB propellants. MDB propellant formulations based on these additives, constituting 10 wt.% of total mass of the MDB formulation, were manufactured by solventless extrusion process. The impact of these additives on ballistic performance particularly the burning rate as well as on the characteristic exhaust velocity of gaseous product (C*), was evaluated using small-scale ballistic evaluation test motor. KP and AP exhibit different effects; KP positively impacts the burning rate, AP positively impacts C*. Stoichiometric binary mixture of AP/Al positively impacts both the burning rate and C*; HMX substantially enhances C*. These energetic additives could alter the combustion mechanism, by thinning the induction zone, allowing the luminous flame zone to be more adjacent to the burning surface. Therefore, the combustion reaction could proceed faster. The developed MDB propellant formulations were found to be more energetic with an increase in calorific value in comparison to reference formulation (using bomb calorimeter); they exhibited similar ignition temperature by means of cook off test. DSC measurements demonstrated similar onset and maximum decomposition temperature of developed MDB propellant formulations to reference DB propellant formulation but with an increase in total heat released (J/g).

Opis:
Due to the wide prospects of use and varied capabilities of high-performance concrete (HPC), both in civil and underground construction, and to the use of numeric calculations in the designing process, are necessary to determine the exact deformational properties of the HPC. The stress-strain relations in concrete are of great significance in the design process and the method of determination depends on many factors, such as: the rate of stress, number of load cycles, the age of concrete since the moment of its production, load duration, temperature and environment humidity changes. Another significant factor seem to be the size of the specimens, used to determine the said relations. This specification is of particular concern in regards to HPC which, due to its modified formula, may behave in a different way to regular concretes. This study presents the results of tests conducted on cylindrical specimens of high-performance concrete, in a uniaxial stress state. Specimens subjected to the tests were of significantly differing dimensions, however all shared the same aspect ratio (height/diameter). Based on the research conducted, one determined the influence of specimen size on the obtained values of modulus of elasticity. The comparison was made both for the tangent as well as the secant modulus of elasticity.
Ze względu na coraz szersze możliwości stosowania betonu wysokowartościowego zarówno w budownictwie naziemnym jak i podziemnym, oraz wykorzystanie w procesie projektowania obliczeń numerycznych, celowym wydaje się dokładne określenie własności odkształceniowych omawianego betonu. Związki pomiędzy naprężeniami i odkształceniami w betonie mają bardzo istotne znaczenie w procesie projektowania, a sposób ich określania zależy od wielu czynników. Jednym ze znaczących czynników jest wielkość badanych próbek. Uwaga ta dotyczy szczególnie betonów wysokowartościowych, które ze względu na zmodyfikowaną recepturę wskazują na odmienne kształtowanie się związków pomiędzy naprężeniami i odkształceniami w stosunku do betonów zwykłych. W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych na próbkach walcowych wykonanych z betonu wysokowartościowego będących w jednoosiowym stanie naprężenia. Badaniu poddano próbki o znacząco różnych wymiarach ale o tej samej smukłości. Na podstawie wykonanych badań określono wpływ wielkości próbek na uzyskane wartości współczynnika sprężystości. Porównania dokonano zarówno dla początkowego stycznego współczynnika sprężystości jak i dla modułu siecznego.

The use of cement resistance to sulphate in aggressive environments showed a lot of benefits such us good mechanical development and therefore better durability; however, the consumption for great amount of clinker lead to random hazardous deposits, shortage of natural resources, gas and dust emissions mainly (CO2) causing negative impact on the environment. Recently, technical, economic and environmental benefits by the use of blended cements have been reported and being considered as a research area of great interest in cement production industry. The present research aim is to evaluate the effect of partial replacements of cement resistant to sulfate (CRS) by a pozzolanic addition, on the physical-chemical properties, as an alternative novel composition binder. Furthermore, the behaviour of the mortars based on this new combined blends was investigated in the study program, including chemical composition, density and fineness, consistency, setting time, swelling, shrinkage, absorption and mechanical behaviour. The results obtained showed that the substitution of pozzolan at the optimal ratio of 5% had a positive effect on the resulting cement properties, namely: greater specific surface area, reduced water demand, accelerated process of hydration, better mechanical behaviour and decreased water absorption. Therefore, economic and ecological cement based on mineral addition like pozzolan could be possible as well as advantageous to the formulation of environmental performance mortars.

Elastomeric micro- and ultrafine-rubber are first considered as binders in melt-cast explosives for improving the mechanical properties. Acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-NBR), carboxylated acrylonitrile-butadiene rubber (CNBR), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-CNBR), styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-SBR), carboxylated styrene-butadiene rubber (CSBR), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-CSBR), acrylic rubber (ACM), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-ACM), room temperature vulcanized silicone rubber (RTV), in ultrafine fully vulcanized form (UF-RTV) and polytetrafluoroethene (PTFE) in micro-rubber form (PTFE-M) were utilized for modifying 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) based melt-cast explosives. Based on their dispersity in TNT and RDX slurry, only UF-NBR, UF-CNBR and PTFE-M can be used. In the modification experiment, their influence on the mechanical and detonation performance of the matrixes were studied, as well as the impact sensitivity. Compared with PTFE-M and UF-CNBR, UF-NBR improved the tensile and compressive strength of the original formulation CYCLOTOL-65/35. The toughening mechanism was also explained through interfacial interactions and fracture energy analysis. The predicted detonation properties of the modified formulations (detonation pressure variations from 26 to 28 GPa, detonation velocity variations from 7900 to 8100 m/s) are at the same energy level as CYCLOTOL-65/35. In addition, the drop hammer impact testing results confirm that the formulation containing UF-NBR is more sensitive than the one with UF-CNBR, with the same amount of additive.

Opis:
The paper deals with information concerning properties and technology of a new generation cementitious composite i.e. Ultra-High Performance Concrete. High performance here means both high strength and high durability under the influence of environmental factors. This group of composites is mainly represented by Reactive Powder Concretes (RPC), which show both outstanding durability and mechanical properties. Characteristic features of RPC are mainly due to the very low water-cement ratio, which involves application of superplasticizer, significant reduction of aggregate grains size as well as hydrothermal treatment. In the first part of the paper selected properties of RPC are compared to ordinary concrete and to other groups of new generation concrete. Moreover, fundamental technological factors influencing properties of RPC are described as well. The second part deals with the RPC developed at Cracow University of Technology. The presented test results are mainly focused on the influence of steel fibres content on mechanical properties of reactive powder concrete and hydrothermal treatment on composites microstructure. The quantitative and qualitative evaluation of this relationship expand the knowledge of the UHPC technology. Finally, the third part presents the most significant and newest structures which have been erected with the use of RPC.
