The paper analyzes the presence of the remains of ammonites and belemnites in the stones used to build the elevations of houses in modern Polish cities. The process of aestheticizing buildings is the reason for fossilized cephalopods being moved from the natural environment into urban space. I consider whether the use of such materials leads merely to making the buildings look more attractive or if this process provides an opportunity to interpret these buildings in an alternative way, which goes beyond aesthetic categories and is related to the fact that the fossils have been moved from the natural world into the cultural sphere. The limestone elements of architecture also allow one to look at the city as a unique museum of cultural and natural history.

The works of Charles Bonnet illustrate the contribution of imagination to research in natural history in the second half of the 18th century. In his Palingénésie philosophique (1769), Bonnet uses images and metaphors rooted in the philosophical and literary imagery of the Enlightenment to describe the evolution of life. This juxtaposition of scientific and literary discourses did not prevent Bonnet from being regarded as a forefather of modern biology by historians of science.

In spring 2023, the Gdansk publishers: słowo/ obraz terytoria released the first volume of Krzysztof Pomian’s study Muzeum. Historia światowa [World History of the Museum]. It launches the Polish edition of the monumental three-volume work published by Éditions Gallimard in Paris which is the first study of the universal history of the museum. This is more than a book, it’s a monument! (Plus qu’un livre, un monument!) is what Fabien Simode wrote in the l’OEil monthly (March 2021). At present rarely are such historically broad studies released, possibly because of authors’ fear of being potentially accused of postmodernist meta-narrative. In this case, the work is a comprehensive synthesis in view of the entailed chronology, geography, and thematic range. The discussed volume Od skarbca do muzeum [From a Treasure Chamber to the Museum] recently published for Polish readers tackles the process of European collectorship crystalizing and first museums being its consequence, mainly Italian and several northern ones, from the Capitoline Museum in Rome (1471) up to London’s British Museum (1753). Subsequent volumes are already being prepared. Titled L’ancrage européen, 1789–1850, the second one is dedicated to the history of the museum consolidating into a permanent and significant element of European culture, close to the institution we know today: started by the revolutionary Louvre (1793), this history is created by the vast part of the major museums of today’s Western Europe. Finally, volume three A la conquête du monde, 1850–2020 is the most extensive of them all both chronologically and territorially, as well as in view of the number of museums and their activity discussed. Author’s considerations encompass museums’ expansion to Eastern Europe including Russia, and then eventually to the rest of the world: Asia, Africa, both Americas, mainly the territories connected with the West through colonial bonds; the United States, being the area where today’s dominating world centres have been formed, is analysed separately. At that point the book’s title: world history, gains its full relevance, and relates both to the interwar period in the democratic and totalitarian world, WW II, and to the long contemporary era.

Opis:
The present article provides arecontextualization of Wolfgang Caspar Printz’s (1641–1717) landmark music history published in 1690 (Historische Beschreibung der edelen Sing- und Kling-Kunst). later commentators have read it as a primitive, naïve and even failed attempt at writing the history of music. Still, they seem to agree that the text, in virtue of its subject matter, forms part of a canon of music historiography. The present article will seek the interpretative key in the wider intellectual context, outside of the narrow confines of texts about the musical past. It will advance the thesis that Printz built his music historiography from elements of the natural history tradition. Two arguments support this thesis. First, it will be argued that the organization of the material in chapters XIv, Xv and XvI betrays the influence of a classical version of taxonomy closely associated with the natural history tradition. Secondly, that Printz’s inquiry into the purpose of music reveals his reliance on a concept of nature similarly rooted in natural history.

The article presents the way in which the term “geology” in its today’s meaning was formed. The reasons for its consolidation among the naturalists in Poland and throughout Europe are pointed out. Thanks to the scientific influence of the father of European mineralogy A.G. Werner (1749-1817), the term geology was in some cases replaced by geognosy and oryctognosy. In turn, the father of Polish geology, Stanisław Staszic (1755-1826), favoured using the term ziemiorodztwo (“terrogenesis”). Probably, for the first time the term geology was used in Polish in 1804 by Józef Wybicki (1747-1822), the creator of the national anthem “Dąbrowski Mazurka”, and by Jan Śniadecki (1756-1830), an outstanding geographer, mathematician and astronomer.

Opis:
The paper is devoted to the physical aspects of asceticism and mystical experience of Prussian female mystic, the blessed Dorothy of Montau, analysed based on the detailed and vivid description of John Marienwerder. It makes an attempt of hypothetic identification of actual character of somatic effects of visions and mystical unions with Christ (sweating, hot flushes, pain) with special consideration of spiritual “stabbings” of heart (and other bodily parts) with arrows and spears of Divine Love and the symptom of enlarged womb. The interpretation by John Marienwerder, rooted in the medieval knowledge of physiology and set in categories of the bridal mysticism, made a considered apology of the Prussian recluse. In effort to reinterpret the somatic symptoms described by medieval theologian, this paper controverts also the attempt of their evaluation and analysis appearing in contemporary scientific literature employing methods of the so called psycho-history. Most likely neither the female psychology nor the religious hysteria were responsible for the carnal symptoms described by John Marienwerder. The mystic throughout all her life heroically struggled with the consequences of scalding she had suffered as a child and of multiple childbirth intertwined with carnal mortifications, however the main cause of her painful experiences most probably was a progressing heart disease. Its increasing untreated symptoms (natural history of illness) can be identified in the writings by John Marienwerder and analysed in the light of contemporary medical knowledge. The holiness of the recluse manifested not only in the sphere of asceticism, renouncement, zealous religious practice and contemplation, but also in transmitting the corporal suffering of somatic origin into the sphere of deep spiritual experience based on the idea of Compassio Christi.

Thirty years ago, at the occasion of the tercentenary of the birth of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon (1707–1788), one of the leading figures in French science and literature of the Enlightenment, a volume devoted to the relationships between him and Poland was published. Still today, it is one of the few contributions to the study of the circulation of knowledge and ideas between France and Central and Eastern Europe in the eighteenth century. Here, we analyze its contents, and, more generally, we outline a reflection on the historiography of Buffon’s relations with the European culture of his time. We briefly examine the different agents of diffusion and their role in the (often biased) transmission of scientific texts and conceptions from one country to another, and the ways these agents have been studied by historians in Buffon’s case, in particular by the authors of Buffon (1707–1788) et la Pologne. Certainly, this work did not attempt to bring general conclusions, but it contributed to give a first sketch of the complex networks of relationships between French and Polish naturalists in the late eighteenth century. It would be valuable, nevertheless, to develop a more comprehensive approach of these processes, to consider multipolar rather than bilateral exchanges, and to take into account the role of other (German, Russian…) cultural zones.

Opis:
The definition of a natural history museum as an institution continues to evolve following the humanistic reflection on the Anthropocene. This article focuses on the history of the State Museum of Natural History in Lviv, one of the oldest institutions of this type, recently reopened after years of reconstruction. The text seeks to analyse the museum concept and operations through the prism of the contemporary debate on the human–nature–culture relationships. The primary questions include: (1) How was the human–nature relationship depicted in the museum space as the latter evolved into its modern concept? (2) Which problems and motives present in the museum exhibitions seem close to the contemporary challenges and vision of the Anthropocene? (3) What museum interpretations are possible in the context of old natural history collections and the contemporary debate on the museum’s function and its transformation? An important conclusion is that natural history collections not only provide a valuable material for natural research, but are also a significant testimony to changes occurring in the contemporary perception of the human–nature relationship and its impact on political, economic and cultural processes taking place in modern societies.

W pierwszej połowie XIX wieku zestawiano postaci „młodego” i „starego” leśniczego, zapowiadające rozdźwięk między oświeceniowym i romantycznym podejściem do świata przyrody. Ksyloteki Wiktora Kozłowskiego reprezentują podejście oświeceniowe – związane z pasją katalogowania, preparowania i obiektywizowania jako narzędzi kontroli.
Taking as a starting point the German tradition of creating xylotheques, i.e. libraries containing wood samples disguised as books, I recall the biography of Wiktor Kozłowski (1791–1858), the first Polish creator of xylotheques, forester, collector and author of dictionaries of forest terminology against the backdrop of the history of the organisation of the governmental forest service in the Kingdom of Poland. I put forward the thesis that the reorganisation of forestry in the spirit of the Enlightenment’s project of dominating nature caused anxiety, which found expression, among other places, in Karol  Kurpiński’s opera Leśniczy z Kozienickiej Puszczy [The Forester from the Kozieniecka Primeval Forest]. In the first half of the 19th century, the figure of the “young” and “old” forester was juxtaposed, already heralding the rift between the Enlightenment and romantic approaches to the natural world. Wiktor Kozłowski’s xylotheques represent the Enlightenment approach – related to the passion for cataloguing, preparing and objectifying as tools of control over the natural world.

What curatorial gesture would make it possible to give rise to a temporary museum in situ where anthropogenic inscriptions could be presented by the living exhibits themselves? In this article the past of the Anthropocene is defined as a time of intensified activity of Homo sapiens in the early Holocene, before our impact on the hydrosphere, geosphere and atmosphere became irreversible. The author ponders whether the current definition of a natural history museum can incorporate a project of a living, embodied, post-anthropocentric and post-institutional museum. She suggests plants as essential partners in the human becoming across the biosphere. Chlorophyll organisms initiated the Great Oxidation Event, or Oxygen Catastrophe, which led not only to the extinction of anaerobic organisms but also to the proliferation of oxygen-dependent life, including humans. The human-plant co-existence is studied through the consequences of the ‘desire for sunlight’ of the former and the ‘desire for mobility’ of the latter. Synanthropic plants, which thrive growing next to people, emerge as the protagonists of this story, with the shared interspecies history and anthropogenic mutations inscribed in their bodies. This is a story of the human–plant co-evolution where contemporary, ‘spontaneous’ synanthropic plants are depicted as agents. In this context the author describes the artistic practices of Andrea Haenggi, analysing them as curatorial gestures for an interspecies dialogue within the framework of a ‘museum setting’.

Opis:
In his work A Natural History of Human Thinking, Michael Tomasello depicts thinking as a form of cooperation. Presenting at the same time a conceptual schema enriched with empirical data, he outlines a natural history of thinking in particular, indicating how the process of socialization and new, unique manifestations of human interaction alter the forms of thinking, from the ones we share with primates, through increasingly complex forms characteristic of the primitive man, to these of the contemporary man. In A Natural History of Human Morality Tomasello presents a similar structure, showing morality as a form of human cooperation in which, according to Tomasello, Homo sapiens, seen as “ultra-social primates”, developed new and uniquely human forms of social interaction and organization which, as a result, required new and also very specific for Homo sapiens psychological mechanisms in cognitive processes, social interaction and self-control. While in A Natural History of Human Thinking Tomasello’s main hypothesis is the Shared Intentionality Hypothesis, in A Natural History of Human Morality it is the Interdependence Hypothesis. Thus, this unique structure of abilities and motivation is the feature which distinguishes us from other primates. This essay aims to extract and outline this structure, focusing more on A Natural History of Human Morality.

The subject of the article is defining the specificity of broadly understood epistemology (theory of cognition, methodology of science) that could be seen in the teaching of physics at secondary schools (and partly also at universities) run by the Commission for National Education. It was the first European „ministry” of education, which worked in Poland in the years 1773-1795. Its specificity was defined by a new model of school directed to scientific rather than linguistic-humanist, and on a higher level − also than philosophical education. On the level of syllabuses it meant replacing lecturing Aristotelian philosophy of nature with phenomenalistic-mathematical natural science (mechanists), oriented to technical-economic practice (utilitarianism). The syllabuses declared so radical a break up − in the spirit of pre-positivism of The French Encyclopaedia − with traditional education that at secondary schools practically all the philosophical subjects were removed, apart from logic and ethics, and at universities logic was cancelled too. However, the teaching practice differed from the syllabus and organisational radicalism that was incomparable with any other education system functioning in Europe. In it numerous handbooks written in the circle of the so-called philosophia recentiorum were used. It joined the Aristotelian philosophy of nature with elements of modern natural history. Introduced into the secondary and university education in the whole of Europe in the first half of the 18th century, it broke the framework of the traditional philosophy syllabus. Also the handbooks of the Commission for National Education − like all of the eclectic school physics of the Enlightenment era − still contained philosophical elements, with the idea of justifying them inductively. However, at the same time numerous troubles appeared resulting from putting into effect the empirical-mathematical ideal of natural history. This was the result of shortage of instruments necessary for performing experiments, even on the didactic level that dominated over research work in the Polish science of that time. Also doubts were expressed as to the possibilities and range of applying the language of mathematics for defining the data obtained in experiments. This resulted from a low methodological level of natural science of that time that still had a describing-systematising character (natural history, partly also physics). Hence doubts appeared in defining the mathematical status of natural science, still treated as applied mathematics, or as an integral − sometimes even first-rate − element of physics. Especially development of mathematically defined mechanics and the possibilities of applying it in technology gave a higher prestige to reflection over technical--economic activity, which led to general acceptance of the ideal of applied science preferred at those times.

Recognised as archives documenting natural research and human impact on nature and biodiversity loss, natural history museums prompt questions about how to explore, interpret and put their collections in context so as to provoke a discussion on the consequences of constructed concepts of nature, pressing ecological issues, and ethical obligations towards nonhuman beings and the next generation. Answers to these questions may be found in the analysis of selected works by Mark Dion who uses museum instruments and collections not so much to criticise the museum itself but to transform it into an agora. The author studies the artist’s works that refer to cabinets of curiosities. She argues that Dion’s Wunderkammer are visual quotations derived from their 16th and 17th century prototypes. Put in a new context, the quotations eliminate boundaries between words and images, theory and practice, art and science, nature and culture. The said quotations of cabinets of curiosities are of preposterous nature. Dion’s ‘mobile dioramas’ and his Ursus Maritimus project (1992–2002) are in turn recognised as subversive works where natural history museum instruments are used to unveil the institutional framework responsible for our seeing of nature and problems of the Anthropocene such as biodiversity loss.
