Opis:
By means of wavelet transform, an ARIMA time series can be split into different frequency components. In doing so, one is able to identify relevant patters within this time series, and there are different ways to utilize this feature to improve existing time series forecasting methods. However, despite a considerable amount of literature on the topic, there is hardly any work that compares the different wavelet-based methods with each other. In this paper, we try to close this gap. We test various wavelet-based methods on four data sets, each with its own characteristies. Eventually we come to the conclusion that using wavelets does improve forecasting quality especially for time horizons longer than one-day-ahead. However, there is no single superior method: either wavelet-based denoising or wavelet-based time series decomposition is best. Performance depends on the data set as well as the forecasting time horizon.

Opis:
This contribution is concerned with the modeling of composite materials and, particularly, with the application of the multiscale finite element method for that purpose. The method is a result of combining homogenization theory with the finite element method and is based on the idea of splitting the simulation of a heterogeneous body into two tasks: the first one is the modeling of the actual body and the second one the modeling of the representative volume element, the material sample whose analysis replaces the missing effective constitutive law. The connection of these two simulation levels is achieved by introducing the Hill macrohomogeneity condition which requires the equality of the macropower and the volume average of the micropower. The method has the advantage to be applicable for simulation of materials with very different microstructure types. This is illustrated by the examples concerned with effective behavior of two- and three-phase composite materials.

Opis:
A multiscale model for simulating the hydrodynamic behavior of catalytic bale packings has been proposed. This model combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and macroscopic calculation. At small scale calculation, the CFD model includes 3-D volume-of-fluid (VOF) simulation within representative elementary unit (REU) under unsteady-state conditions. The REU constitutes gauze and catalyst domain, and porous media model is applied. At large scale calculation, a new mechanistic model deduced from the unit network model is employed. Based on liquid split proportion from small scale calculation, liquid distribution of the entire bale packing can be predicted. To evaluate different packing design, three common bale arrangements, i.e. one-bale, nine-bales and seven-bales, are compared. The area-weighted Christiansen uniformity coefficient is introduced to assess the distribution performance. A comparison between simulation and experimental results is made to validate the multiscale model. The present methodology is proved to be effective to analysis and design of catalytic distillation columns.

Opis:
In this paper a formal system called collection of dynamical systems with dimensional reduction is considered. This is a multiscale method of mathematical description which allows to consider molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics within one theoretical framework. Transition between molecular dynamics and continuum mechanics is realized by means of the dimensional reduction procedure. In order to realize such a procedure the formulation of continuum mechanics is modified. This modification consists in incorporation scale of averaging for properties of processes considered during modelling into this formulation. As a result we introduce finite-dimensional fields on continuum only. All fundamental terms of continuum mechanics are now joined with an elementary dynamical system. In such a case continuum mechanics can be obtained by means of the dimensional reduction procedure applied to the elementary dynamical system. A numerical example of vibrating chain of material points is realized in order to show how in practice the dimensional reduction can be carried out. In this example decomposition of processes into slowly and quickly varying parts is accomplished. To this end a finite element representation of averaged fields is applied. Solutions of equations of the elementary dynamical system and the dimensionally reduced dynamical system are compared.

Opis:
The main goal of this work is the integration of in-house software with commercial numerical software based on the finite element method (FEM). The main idea is to develop a universal interface to perform process simulations with multiscale models. The interface allows the combination of external procedures with commercial software with minimum programmer’s work putting in integration. As an example, the model of material recrystallization of steel was implemented, added to the commercial application, and the software was tested for a process defined as a sequence of compression and cooling. The material model takes into consideration each type of recrystallization that occurs during a sequence of thermal and mechanical processing such as static recrystallization (SRX), dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and meta-dynamic recrystallization (MDRX). It allows the prediction of recrystallized volume fraction (X) and grain growth on each step of numerical simulation for each Gauss point in the computation domain. The presented multiscale model of process sequences not only allows to calculate microscale model parameters such as grain growth and recrystallized volume fraction, but also reflects the impact of the microscale model on macroscale parameters.

Opis:
The paper presents a methodology of the multiscale bone modeling in which the task of identification of material parameters plays the crucial role. A two-scale analysis of the bone is considered and the problem of identification, formulated as an inverse problem, is examined as an important stage of the modelling process. The human femur bone, built form cancellous and cortical bone, is taken as an example of an osseous tissue, and the computational multiscale approach is considered. The methodology presented in the paper allows one to analyze the two-scale model with the use of computational homogenization. The representative volume element (RVE) is created for the microstructure of the basis of micro-CT scans. The macro and micro model analyses are performed by using the finite element method. The identification of trabeculae material parameters on the micro-level is considered as the minimization problem which is solved using evolutionary computing.

This work studies the dependence of the solution with respect to interface geometric perturbations, in a multiscaled coupled Darcy flow system in direct variational formulation. A set of admissible perturbation functions and a sense of convergence is presented, as well as sufficient conditions on the forcing terms, in order to conclude strong convergence statements. For the rate of convergence of the solutions we start solving completely the one dimensional case, using orthogonal decompositions on the appropriate subspaces. Finally, the rate of convergence question is analyzed in a simple multi dimensional setting, by studying the nonlinear operators introduced due to the geometric perturbations.

The article presents a novel method of producing Gd particles and preserving them from oxidation. The particles were produced in liquid paraffin by means of AC electric discharge and stored in the solidified paraffin. After seven months, the surface of the Gd was found to be exempt of oxidation. Moreover a composite material formed from mixing paraffin with Gd particles was conductive and magnetic and also presented photovoltaic effect. This method is a promising means of producing, at an industrial scale, particles from materials extremely sensitive to environment such as rare earth materials. Also the new material consisted of Gd particles in a paraffin matrix can find applications in many branches of industry.

The article reviews the results of experimental tests assessing the impact of process parameters of additive manufacturing technologies on the geometric structure of free-form surfaces. The tests covered surfaces manufactured with the Selective Laser Melting additive technology, using titanium-powder-based material (Ti6Al4V) and Selective Laser Sintering from polyamide PA2200. The evaluation of the resulting surfaces was conducted employing modern multiscale analysis, i.e., wavelet transformation. Comparative studies using selected forms of the mother wavelet enabled determining the character of irregularities, size of morphological features and the indications of manufacturing process errors. The tests provide guidelines and allow to better understand the potential in manufacturing elements with complex, irregular shapes.

The fast development of digitalization and computational science is opening new possibilities for a rapid design of new materials. Computational tools coupled with focused experiments can be successfully used for the design of new nanostructured materials in different sectors, particularly in the area of biomedical applications. This paper starts with a general introduction on the future of computational tools for the design of new materials and introduces the paradigm of multiscale molecular modeling. It then continues with the description of the multiscale (i.e., atomistic, mesoscale and finite element calculations) computational recipe for the prediction of novel materials and structures for biomedical applications. Finally, the comparison of in silico and experimental results on selected systems of interest in the area of life sciences is reported and discussed. The quality of the agreement obtained between virtual and real data for such complex systems indeed confirms the validity of computational tools for the design of nanostructured polymer systems for biomedical applications.

In order to automatize the process of generalization of DTM (Digital Terrain Model) in TDB (Topographic Data Base), information about relief should be recorded in such a way, as to preserve real location of characteristic key forms and structure lines. Automatic generalization of DTM should involve generalization of database rather than graphic simplification of contour lines. Among the existing methods of DTM generalization one can distinguish various types of filtering (global, local) and heuristic approach based on a concept of generalization of structure lines. It uses digital operators in interactive cooperation between operator and the digital system. Here, generalization bases on the approximation of source SLM (structure line model) through the use of classic generalization methods such as, among others: magnification, deletion, combination, and simplification of single structure lines, followed by recomposition of secondary DTM basing on the resulting SLM. In the conducted research it was assumed, that for the composition of a hierarchical (multiscale) DTM basing on a generalization of significant morphological forms it is especially important to properly establish structure lines which constitute the topographic ..skeleton" of terrain. These lines were established basing on the existing topographic maps as well as on the analysis of TIN and GRID model. The aim was to see if it was possible to fully automatically determine structure lines basing on irregular (or regular) source data including no additional information on structural forms. Most algorithms which determine structure lines of relief basing on the regular model involve advanced analysis of potential surface flow accumulation. The research applied a modified D8 algorithm implemented in GM Grid 5,2 module, which is a functional extension of GeoMedia Professional package by Intergraph. To establish erosion network (drainage lines) it is vital to determine a threshold of accumulated flow, over which drainage network becomes a stream. Although the process is fully automatic, subjective setting of such threshold significantly varies the results. Authors of the concept of so-called extended Morse-Smale's decomposition (E. Danovaro L. DeFloriani, P. Magillo, M. Mesmoudi, E. Puppo 2003) claim that generalization of automatically determined structure lines allows for hierarchical DTM generalization, preserving significant topological relations. The research results do not support that hypothesis. Because the actual structure lines were not taken into consideration, in the process of standard Delaneuy's triangulation there appear triangles with edges crossing structure lines. It appears that although DTM generalization (or its hierarchical composition) can be successfully executed through the generalization of structure lines, the automatization of the process of determining these lines does not yield expected results. The need to determine structure lines through direct surveying, e.g. with photogrammetric techniques is therefore justified. Basing on thus determined ..skeleton" it is possible to properly generalize the model of relief, while preserving significant topological relations.

An air bubble arrangement, which show non-periodic and periodic patterns. The spatiotemporal behaviour was recorded by a digital camera. Multiscale entropy analysis is a method of measuring the time series complexity. The main aim of the paper was testing the possibility of implementation of multiscale entropy for two-phase flow patterns classification. For better understanding, the dynamics of the two-phase flow patterns inside the minichannel histograms and wavelet methods were also used. In particular, we found a clear distinction between bubbles and slugs formations in terms of multiscale entropy. On the other hand, the intermediate region was effected by appearance of both forms in non-periodic and periodic sequences. The preliminary results were confirmed by using histograms and wavelets.

As a validation step, the numerical predictions are compared with the reference findings to either verify the finite element procedure or demonstrate that the constructed RVE can capture both the local geometrical characteristics and the acoustic macrobehavior of cellular solid foams. It can be seen from the obtained results that the morphological characteristics of open-cell foams could be controlled to achieve the desired sound absorbing behavior. In addition, the analytical expressions, formulating the relationship between the geometry of foam absorbers and their target absorption performance, are established to design sound absorbing foam layers.
