Opis:
The need to design a friction damper for glass-making robots arose because of the excessive vibrations, which occur in the course of their work. The robots are commonly used in the manufacture of glassware. The vibrations adversely affect the work of ball gatherers, which results in a large number of defects in the finished glass products. As a result of the vibrations molten glass may become unevenly distributed on the ball's surface and as the material flows down the ball into the mould the thermal conditions of its solidification may change. It is proposed to damp the vibrations by means of a prototype friction damper mounted directly on the ball gatherer lance. The glass-making robot lance with the friction damper was modelled. The vibrations of the glass-making robot lance tip under static load and impact excitation were measured during simulations. Also the relative displacements of the damper rings in the course of the excitations were measured. Moreover, the dependence between the preload force and the system's damping decrement was determined. The main aim was to select proper operating parameters for the proposed structure in order to obtain maximum system damping.

This paper introduces a novel design for parting-off tools and the method to characterize their performance. The principle followed in the design phase was to enhance the damping capability minimizing the loss in static stiffness through implementation of composite material interfaces. The tool has been characterized by the dynamic characteristics criterion, i.e. frequency and damping ratio, of the machining system, as well as the roughness of the machined surface criterion. This paper demonstrates a new model-based method for characterizing the machining system dynamic properties, applied, in this sThe presented mathematical model of the machining system is based on the data recorded by a microphone during operational conditions. In this way, a step beyond the classical method of analyzing the dynamics of a machining system, which separately identifies the structural and process parameters is taken. The analyses together with the experimental results proved that the parting-off tool was able to machine over a wide range of cutting parameters. It was found that the limiting factor for increasing cutting parameters is not the damping capability of the tool but the tool clamping system stiffness and the workholding system dynamic properties. This implies that, in order to further optimize the machining performance, it is vital to take consideration not only the tool-clamp-turret system but the whole machining system.

A numerical model of a friction damper used for damping vibration in glass gatherer robots was described. The damper with a lance was modelled using finite elements. Primary natural frequency of the system was determined. Numerical calculations were performed to determine the best operating parameters of the damper for excitations using a impulse of a force. Results of the damping decrement calculations for the friction damper model with a constant coefficient of friction and for the model, in which the coefficient of friction varied depending on the sliding velocity and the normal pressure occurring at the contact surfaces of the damper’s friction rings, were presented. Based on numerical simulations, the values of relative displacements between the damper’s friction rings were also determined.

The stabilization problem for a structural acoustic model is considered. The model under consideration is that of acoustic cavity (wave equation) coupled at the interface with a flexible wall (plate equation) which accounts for thermal effects. It is shown that frictional, nonlinear damping applied at the boundary of the acoustic chamber provides the uniform decay rates for the energy function of the overall structure. The main novelty of this result, with respect to the literature, is that the uniform stability for the model is established without assuming any mechanical damping the wall.

The research aimed to establish tyre-road noise models by using a Data Mining approach that allowed to build a predictive model and assess the importance of the tested input variables. The data modelling took into account three learning algorithms and three metrics to define the best predictive model. The variables tested included basic properties of pavement surfaces, macrotexture, megatexture, and unevenness and, for the first time, damping. Also, the importance of those variables was measured by using a sensitivity analysis procedure. Two types of models were set: one with basic variables and another with complex variables, such as megatexture and damping, all as a function of vehicles speed. More detailed models were additionally set by the speed level. As a result, several models with very good tyre-road noise predictive capacity were achieved. The most relevant variables were Speed, Temperature, Aggregate size, Mean Profile Depth, and Damping, which had the highest importance, even though influenced by speed. Megatexture and IRI had the lowest importance. The applicability of the models developed in this work is relevant for trucks tyre-noise prediction, represented by the AVON V4 test tyre, at the early stage of road pavements use. Therefore, the obtained models are highly useful for the design of pavements and for noise prediction by road authorities and contractors.

Bilge keels are effective passive devices in mitigating the rolling motion, and the usage of them covers almost all the sea going vessels. This paper focuses on the viscous effect of the bilge keel, ignored the effect of the free surface and the effect of the ship hull, for the general viscous characteristic of the bilge keel. In order to investigate the viscous effect of the bilge keel on the total damping moment, a special 2 dimensional numerical model, which includes a submerged cylinder with and without bilge keels, is designed for the simulation of forced rolling. Three important factors such as bilge keels width, rolling periods, as well as maximal rolling angles are taken into account, and the viscous flow field around the cylinder is simulated by some codes based on the viscous method in different conditions, in which the three factors are coupled. Verification and validation based on the ITTC method are performed for the cylinder without bilge keels in the conditions of different rolling periods and maximal rolling angles. The primary calculation of damping moment induced by the cylinder with 0mm, 4mm, and 10mm width bilge keels shows some interesting results, and a systematic analysis is conducted. The analysis of the damping moment components suggests there is phase difference between the damping moment induced by the cylinder and the bilge keels, and when the bilge keels width reaches a special size, the total damping moment is mitigated. The calculation of the damping moments induced by the cylinder with some larger bilge keels are also performed, and the results suggest that, the damping moment induced by the bilge keels is increased rapidly and becomes the dominant part in the total damping moment while the width of the bilge keels are increased, but the damping moment induced by the cylinder is not changed significantly. Some illustration of the vortices formation and shedding is included, which is the mechanism of the damping moment caused by the bilge keels. The present work shows an interesting problem, and it is useful for the bilge keel design.

Nowadays, the increasing number of non-linear loads influences the grid, causing grid voltage disturbances. These disturbances may be very dangerous for the equipment and can create faults in converter behaviour. However, the right control algorithm can improve the reliability of the work. For a current source rectifier, the finite control set model predictive control has been proposed. This method is very flexible because of the variety of the possible cost function forms. It has been examined under grid voltage disturbed by the higher harmonics and the voltage drop. Simulation results prove the ability to damp the distortions and to ensure the unity power factor. Summing up, the algorithm is a very good solution for use in applications such as battery charging, active power filtering and low-voltage direct current load feeding.

Opis:
A single spring and a single dashpot in series was utilized to simulate the stress-strain curve for different classes of solid rocket propellants, namely extruded double base propellants (EDBP) and composite propellants (CP), in the uniaxial tensile mode in a constant rate of travel machine. The propellant behaves as a viscoelastic material and invariably exhibits stress relaxation, which cannot be simulated by elastic mechanical property parameters. In order to generate a complete stress-strain curve of a solid rocket propellant under tensile testing, different classes of solid rocket propellants were evaluated and the stress-strain curve generated was modelled using the single spring-single dashpot Maxwell fluid model. Using two constants, called the spring constant (K) and the damping factor (D), it was possible to generate a complete stress-strain curve. Mathematical formulation gives the stress (σ) - strain (ε) relation as….[wzór]. Additionally the physical nature of the spring constant resembles that of the elastic constant and the damping coefficient gives the contribution of the viscous part of the load bearing capacity of solid rocket propellants. The development of a general mathematical formulation, the calculation of constants for different classes of propellants and insight into the viscoelastic nature of propellants are the main themes of this article. For all classes of propellants, two ratios are defined. The first is a dimensionless parameter 'H', which is the ratio of the spring constant to the initial elastic modulus. The second is the ratio of the damping coefficient to the spring constant depicted by parameter 'S'. The spring constant is higher than the initial elastic modulus and the value of 'H' is always higher than 1. For brittle propellants (extruded double base propellants, EDBPs, with a high elastic modulus), the spring constant is numerically very close to the spring constant (H is around 1.75). As the ductility (percentage elongation) of the solid rocket propellants increases (from cartridge loaded composite propellants, CLCPs, to case-bonded composite propellants, CBCPs), the value of parameter 'H' also increases (H ~ 10 for CP). For EDBPs the parameter 'S' is smaller (~ 1.24), but for CLCPs and CBCPs, it is high (S ~ 5 to 8). Both of these ratios are basic properties of the polymeric matrix. The first ratio depicts the departure of the actual stress-strain curve from linearity, while the second ratio is another way of expressing the relaxation time. A higher 'H' indicates a softer and more ductile propellant, while a higher 'S' indicates a shorter relaxation time for the propellant. A lower 'S' indicates that the propellant recovers faster on removal of strain.

The dynamic properties of the car's suspension largely depend on the damping that results from the state of the shock absorbers. Their technical condition is essential for vehicle occupants’ comfort and traffic safety. It changes with the time and intensity of use of the vehicle. Therefore, adequate methods of non-destructive (diagnostic) testing of suspension damping have been sought for many years. The on-vehicle tests are particularly useful thanks to their low cost and short test duration time. The newest method is the ‘theta’ method which is the subject of the presented article. Notation ‘theta’ usually means relative damping (damping ratio) in the vibrating system. The paper asses four variants of the method. Two versions come from modal analysis and are also known as the ‘peak-picking method’ or ‘half-power method’. Two other versions are described in cited patent documentations. Three linear ‘quarter car' models with their description in the frequency domain were used to assess mentioned variants of the ‘theta’ method. Calculations were made for two typical datasets corresponding to the front and rear suspension system of a medium-class motor car. This provided grounds for general qualitative and (within a limited scope) quantitative assessment of the usefulness of individual variants of the method under analysis and for comparisons between them. The paper is to help in choosing the variant of the ‘theta’ method that would most likely find the application and that might be recommended to manufacturers and would-be purchasers of diagnostic suspension testers. The author has also highlighted the importance of possible further research.

Opis:
Elastic hysteretic damping is defined as the dissipation of energy at a rate that is weakly dependent on frequency of vibration. In this article, we propose that the elastic hysteretic damping can be achieved by a simple modification to the viscous damping model. The proposed modification is based on computing an instantaneous correction factor that recursively depends on the state variables of the system. This correction factor is related to the rate by which the velocity changes with respect to the displacement. The new model compares quite favourably with the other existing solutions in the time-domain and differences between the solutions become evident for higher damping ratios. It is found that the new model predicts consistently the weak variation in the loss factor as a function of frequency. In addition to its simple mathematical formulation, the proposed model is superior to the existing solutions in that it does not require knowledge of the past history of motion neither the knowledge of the excitation frequency and is extensible to any type of loading. Various aspects pertaining to the linearity of the proposed approach are finally discussed.

Opis:
The paper presents two methods of solving the problem of the dynamics of a frame structure with viscoelastic bonds in nodes. In the first approach, known from the literature, two-node beam elements with three degrees of freedom in each node were used. Exact shape functions were adopted to obtain a stiffness matrix, a consistent mass matrix and a damping matrix for the beam element. These matrices were then modified by introducing rotational viscoelastic constraints at the boundary nodes. In the second approach, a new method of modelling viscoelastic bonds in frame structures was proposed. It consists in removing rigid bonds between elements along selected degrees of freedom and replacing them with a new, additional element with viscoelastic properties. This approach allows the use of any rheological model to describe viscoelastic bonds (i.e. an additional element) without the need to create a new modified finite element. In this work, an advanced rheological model, i.e. the fractional Kelvin model, was used to describe rotational viscoelastic bonds. The use of fractional derivatives to describe the damping properties reduces the number of parameters needed in the model, but leads to a non-linear eigenproblem. In order to solve the eigenvalue problem, the continuation method was used, and the dynamic characteristics of the structure were determined on the basis of the calculated eigenvalues. Selected structures with viscoelastic nodes were analyzed and the obtained results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
