Opis:
A metamaterial in the form of a periodic lattice of split-ring resonators on a GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructure was numerically studied at terahertz frequencies. A finite-difference time-domain algorithm was applied to calculate distribution of the electromagnetic field in the layer positioned at 100 nm below the heterostructure surface where a two-dimensional electron gas typically resides in real structures. The results allowed to determine the resonant frequencies of the metamaterial as well as an enhancement factor of the electric field as a function of the period of the metamaterial's lattice.

The present study investigates the angular response and sensitivity of a surface plasmon resonance biosensor with metamaterial, by taking the advantage of the remarkable property of metamaterials. The proposed biosensor numerically shows that silver with a metamaterial layer enhances the sensitivity. The thickness of metamaterial and silver layer has been optimized. On comparing these results with a conventional surface plasmon resonance biosensor, it is observed that the sensitivity of the proposed biosensor is improved by introducing the metamaterial. The proposed biosensor has a sensitivity 6.3124 times higher than that of the conventional surface plasmon resonance sensor.

The metamaterial with an effective permeability and/or permittivity tensor having elements of different magnitudes and signs is termed as the anisotropic metamaterial. The hyperbolic metamaterial may be considered as a subclass of the anisotropic metamaterial. The dispersion relation for the transverse magnetic surface waves at the interface between a nonlinear dielectric material and an anisotropic metamaterial is derived using the parallel uniaxial approximation of the permittivity tensor. This dispersion relations can be linearized by taking the nonlinear coefficient to be zero. Dispersion curves are plotted for both the linear and the nonlinear cases and are analyzed and compared in different frequency regions.

Opis:
A challenge for developing acoustic metamaterials (AMMs) is considering the application of broadband muffling and load bearing capacity simultaneously. In this paper, a honeycomb based graded AMM muffler is proposed, which can widen the attenuation band and improve the structural stiffness without any external device by means of integrated design. Firstly, the acoustic and mechanical characteristics of the muffler unit cell are theoretically and numerically studied, and the graded muffler is designed based on these characteristics. The numerical results show that the graded muffler widens the attenuation bandwidth of the unit cell, and the simulation also shows that the graded muffler has greater stiffness than the uniform one. The stiffness driven muffler provides new possibilities for the design of advanced metamaterial with simultaneous sound insulation and load bearing performances.

Using the analogy between anisotropic acoustic metamaterials with magnetic metamaterials in transverse magnetic mode, an electromagnetic wave of 2 GHz n transverse magnetic mode, at normal incidence propagating through a two dimensional, anisotropic, semi infinite, double negative, metamaterial slab of 800 × 800 cells, embedded in free space, for the ideal loss case was simulated by a radially dependent finite difference time dependent method to study an ideal acoustic cylindrical cloak. For the simulations multiple cycle m-n-m pulses generating Gaussian beams were used as sinusoidal hard line sources. The simulations for acoustic cylindrical cloaking by a reduced parameter model and a higher order parameter model are also presented. The cloaking behaviour is largely dependent upon the transformation and not on the thickness of the cloak. The radial dependent model and the higher order transformation model are suited for acoustic cloaking.

This review article is concerned with metamaterials, i.e. specifically engineered structures with special properties for interaction with sounds. The research on and practical design of these materials have gained momentum in the last decade, when 3D printing techniques provided the possibility to fabricate such geometrically complex structures. We briefly describe the history of research on AMMs and group them into active and passive metamaterials. For each of these groups of AMMs, we discuss the most notable construction achievements and outline the main applications. We conclude this review with a discussion of possible directions for further research and main applications of AMMs such as noise attenuation, acoustic lens, and the cloaking phenomenon.

Opis:
Many optical systems benefit from elements that can absorb a broad range of wavelengths over a wide range of angles, independent of polarization. In this paper, we present a nearly perfect absorber with dual broadband and polarization-independent in the visible regime that exploits strong symmetric and asymmetric resonance modes of electromagnetic dipoles. It makes use of a bilayer hollowed-out cross pattern structure which is simple, having five layers that include two stacks of metal film with hollowed-out ribbon in cross patterns, two dielectric spacers, and a metal reflecting layer. Simulations show that the design exhibits a significantly enhanced absorption property when compared to a device with a normal cross pattern structure. The nearly perfect absorption efficiency of the device is above 98.5% at two resonances regimes: from 5.57 × 1014to 6.08 × 1014Hz and from 6.75 × 1014to 7.05 × 1014Hz, and its stable absorption characteristics can be maintained over a wide range of polarizing angle – up to ±90°. This strategy can, in principle, be applied to other material systems and could be useful in diverse applications, including thermal emitters, photovoltaics, and photodetectors.

In this paper, we study propagation of electromagnetic wave in negative ternary refractive indices of two-dimensional photonic crystals. We consider two structures with two concentric cylindrical rod and shell in which one of them has negative refractive indices, in positive dielectric background. It is shown that by increasing the diameter of the rod in both structures, we can obtain more and wider band gaps in comparison with the structures in which there is no negative refractive index materials. This increase is more considerable in the first structure, in which the rod has a negative refractive index, in comparison with the second one, where the rod has a positive refractive index.

Opis:
We consider a boundary regime problem for 1D wave propagation in a metamaterial medium with simultaneously negative dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability. We apply a projecting operator method to the Maxwell system in the time domain that allows the space of the linear propagation problem to be split into subspaces of directed waves for the relations of a given material with general dispersion. After projection, the equations for directed waves have a maximally simplified form, which is most convenient for numerical and analytical integration. Matrix elements of the projectors act as integral operators. For a given nonlinearity and dispersion we derive a general system of interacting right/left waves with combined (hybrid) amplitudes. The result is specified for the Drude metamaterial model for both permittivity and permeability coefficients and the Kerr nonlinearity. We also discuss and investigate singular solitary wave solutions of the system as a limit stationary elliptic system related to some boundary regimes.

Opis:
Metamaterials – artificial periodic structures with subwavelength feature sizes – can be characterized with macroscopic electromagnetic properties, like refractive index and wave impedance, just like homogeneous materials. However, in contrast to homogeneous materials, their properties depend strongly on the angle of incidence. 3D metamaterial structures can exhibit homogeneous behaviour, but their fabrication is challenging compared to layered (2D) metamaterials. Here we demonstrate with an example, that layered (2D) metamaterials can also exhibit homogeneous behaviour despite of their anisotropic geometry.

In this article, the authors present the geometry and measurements of the properties of an acoustic metamaterial with a structure composed of multiple concentric rings. CAD models of the structure were developed and subsequently used in numerical studies, which included the study of resonant frequencies using the Lanczos method and an analysis of sound pressure level distribution under plane wave excitation using the finite element method. Subsequently, experimental tests were carried out on models with the same geometry produced with three different materials (PLA, PET-G, and FLEX) using a fused deposition modeling 3D printing technique. These tests included: determining insertion loss for a single model based on tests using the measurement window of a reverberation chamber and determining transmission loss through tests in a semi-anechoic chamber. Sound wave resonance was obtained for frequencies ranging from 1700 to 6000 Hz. Notably, the experimental studies were carried out for the same structure for which numerical tests were conducted. The physical models of a metamaterial were manufactured using three different readily available 3D printing materials. The results of laboratory tests confirm that the created acoustic metamaterial consisting of multi-ring structures reduces noise in medium and high frequencies.

This paper investigates the possibility of exciting high quality trapped resonant modes on frequency selective surfaces consisting of identical sub-wavelength metallic inclusions (symmetrically split rings) with no structural asymmetry but exhibitting electrical asymmetry. The electrical symmetry is broken by using different dielectric substrates. The existence of such anti-symmetric trapped mode on geometrical symmetric structure is demonstrated through numerical simulation. Numerical results suggest that the high quality factor observed for these resonant modes is achieved via weak coupling between the "trapped modes" and free space which enables the excitation of these modes.
