This study deals with seasonal variation of heavy metals in sediments of Muthupet lagoon, Southeast coast of India from September 2011 to August 2012. The bulk sediments were association with sand, silt and clay. Geoaccumulation index (lgeo) was used to quantitatively assess the influences of heavy metal pollution. Heavy metals were determined by using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES) and the results were compared to permissible limits of WHO/USEPA. The minimum concentration of heavy metals in all the stations were found during the post monsoon and summer seasons and the maximum concentration of heavy metals in all the stations were found during the premonsoon and monsoon seasons. The reason for the pollution was land drainage, irrigation through channels and municipal wastes and also the peak agricultural activities due to the release of fresh water from reservoirs. Among all the metals iron was found to be maximum in all the stations in postmonsoon and summer season followed by magnesium and manganese. Apart from these three metal, all other six metals are recorded in moderate range. The reason for the high concentration of these metals are anthropogenic activity, agriculture, aquaculture and the rivers regular in and out flow throughout the study duration in the lagoon area.

Opis:
The paper deals with the conformal mapping of finite, plane, simply connected domains, representing oceans, lakes, estuaries, bays, lagoons, and other natural water bodies of this kind. As a rule, they are bounded by geometrically complex shorelines. The partial differential problems investigated in Oceanology and posed in such domains have turned out to be difficult to solve for at least three reasons. They follow on from the mathematical properties of the differential equations governing such problems, from the just-mentioned geometrical complexity of the domains of solution, and from the sensitivity of the solutions to boundary conditions. In view of the last reason the contours admitted as boundaries of the domains of the solution ought to be as close to the real shorelines as possible. The obviously inaccurate approximation of the shorelines by ‘staircases’, which appears rather often (cf. Catewicz & Jankowski 1983, Lin & Chandler-Wilde 1996) as a consequence of applying finite difference methods to the solution of the partial differential problems, raises serious doubts from the point of view of Numerical Fluid Mechanics. It is recalled in the paper that such inaccuracies are not unavoidable: that complicated plane domains can be transformed accurately by means of properly applied conformal mapping onto regular, canonical domains – in particular, onto discs or squares. Such a transformation is demonstrated on the rather difficult example of the Vistula Lagoon. The transformation begins with the decomposition of the domain into five plane subdomains, each one of which is eventually transformed onto a disc. Every such result is arrived at quite independently of the remaining subdomains, by means of a set of properly selected consecutive mappings. Hence, the final canonical domain consists in this case of a system of five discs which, however, within the framework of this differential problem, have to be treated as interconnected. The interconnections involve images of four segments of straight lines, separating the original subdomains. The transformations and the resulting canonical domain presented in the paper are intended to be applied to the solution of certain hydrodynamical problems concerning the Vistula Lagoon, which will be published elsewhere.

Opis:
Unlike most freshwater bivalves, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha PALLAS) have free swimming larvae and are thus dependent on water currents to guarantee the spreading of their offspring. Although planktonic, the larvae are able to carry out some directed movements. This paper presents investigations carried out in the Szczecin Lagoon, testing the settlement of larvae on different materials at three sites. Zebra mussel larvae preferred the central part of the lagoon for settlement and favoured horizontal over vertical orientation. The rank order referring to number of settled mussels was net > wood > stones > mussel shells > PVc. Water current velocity in the crucial phase was usually very low (<10 cm/s), i.e. not above the limit for settlement. Therefore, other parameters must be involved as well. Two factors are discussed in particular: 1) salinity, and 2) sensory capacities of larvae, linked to the question of their capability of choosing where they settle.

Opis:
Planktonic ciliates occasionally form brief rapid increases in numbers (blooms) that can be trophically important. Although model simulations and mesocosm studies indicate that blooms occur over 10 to 20 days, field data are rarely suffi ciently detailed to reveal their occurrence and demise. Our data (collected over 57 weeks across a coastal lagoon) offer insights into the population dynamics of a single species, place these in the context of the entire ciliate assemblage, and provide guidance on what should continue to be examined. Specifically, to evaluate population dynamics we examine two species of Cyrtostrombidium, characterise temporal and spatial variation of their abundance, and relate these to abiotic phenomena and biological factors. This is also the first report of Cyrtostrombidium in a tropical coastal lagoon. Collectively our analysis reveals key aspects of the dynamics of this genus: 1) small-scale peaks in abundance are ~30 m in size and can persist for ~10–30 days, reaching a maximum of 100 cells ml–1; 2) these increases are driven by biotic factors (revealed through autocorrelation analysis); 3) long-term trends are driven by the shift between dry and rainy seasons and by the periods of isolation of lagoon from the sea (revealed through multiple regression analysis); 4) blooms may at times control primary production; 5) conjugation, an ecologically important event, may be associated with blooms (at times 9% of population was conjugating); and 6) dinoflagellate parasitism, poorly described in oligotrichs, is potentially important in population demise. These results both reflect on how ciliates may behave in short-term events and should encourage the continued need for detailed observations of field samples at a high taxonomic resolution.

Opis:
Lagoon gyttja layers occurring in anomalously high position (up to 2.5 m above the present-day sea level) are known from the central part of the Vistula Spit (Kaliningrad region of the Russian Federation). Complex investigations of lagoon sediments (gyttja, sand), including radiocarbon (14C) dating as well as mollusc, pollen and diatom analyses, have been carried out in 2004–2005. The results of these investigations indicate that the lagoon sediments were deposited in the Late Subboreal–Early Subatlantic period in a shallow freshwater, overgrown basin periodically influenced by brackish water. The anomalously high level of the lagoon gyttja is determined by neotectonic activity of Earth’s crust blocks.

This article addresses the southern sector of the Curonian Spit, the largest coastal barrier of the Baltic Sea. A comparative analysis of the deposits that make up parts of the Curonian and Vistula Spits is given. The detailed analysis of the geological and geomorphological structure of the southern part of the Curonian Spit suggests that, within this sector, it is not a sedimentary barrier created by wave action and Aeolian processes in the Holocene, but a part of a pre-Holocene fluvioglacial plain. Field work has shown that the ancient alluvial or fluvioglacial plain is in the lagoon shore of the Vistula Spit.

Opis:
The paper analyzes the advanced technologies of wastewater treatment with a high content of organic pollutants and ammonium ions. Two different bi-stage scenarios for the treatment of such effluents are proposed. The first scenario includes the pretreatment in aerated lagoons and the final stage at the wastewater treatment plants after appropriate dilution with municipal sewages. The second scenario also includes the first stage in aerated lagoons with a tertiary treatment at the plant for cyanobacteria cultivation with the use of obtained biomass for biofuels production. The effects of the aeration periodicity on the leachate treatment efficiency and also on the composition of microbiocenosis in the aerated lagoons were investigated. The leachates of the Lviv landfill of municipal solid waste (MSW) were used in experimental investigations. The Lviv landfill of MSW was used for domestic and industrial wastes deposition for almost six decades, since the 1960s. It was found that the highest effect of ammoniacal nitrogen removal was obtained in the mode of periodic aeration, with the cycle duration of two hours including the one-hour aeration. It was found that the microorganisms extracted from the leachates of the Lviv MSW landfill are prospective for the new biotechnologies of treatment of the highly concentrated wastewaters, since this microbiocenosis is resistant to the widespread pollutants, in particular to heavy metal ions.

The aim of the present paper is to show the impact of the diversity of social capital of the international sailing environment on the development of tourist services around the Szczecin Lagoon and Dąbie Lake. The target group are Polish and German participants in nautical tourism in the cross-border research area. Materials for the article were collected during field studies conducted in 2009–2012. The questionnaire method was mainly used to obtain information. The paper uses elements of social capital for the purpose of creating the image of the place and promotional activities of the region. The sources of capital were: motivations for sailing, additional leisure time activities, form of sailing activity, individual choice of a place of rest as well as the most frequently chosen domestic and international destinations, as well as personal data like gender, age and nationality of respondents. Understanding capital as a resource allowed it to be used for the development of the research area. The analysis of the research results allowed to specify one characteristic which was positively evaluated by two groups of respondents and these are landscape conditions of the Szczecin Lagoon. Contact with nature turned out to be the most important motivation for sailing. On the other hand, the heterogeneity of the Polish and German sailing environment is clear in the context of age, sailing qualifications, property status, which determines the direction of cruises undertaken and other activities accompanying sailing. All the above-mentioned elements of social capital bring benefits for the research area, observed in the economic and social dimension. Based on them, promotional and infrastructural changes were proposed for the needs of the tourist services sector, including, among others, nature, cultural or qualified tourism.
