Opis:
In recent years, much research has focused on energy recovery from biomass as an alternative to fossil fuel usage. Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), which produce electricity via microbial decomposition of organic matter, are of great interest. The performance of an MFC depends on the electrode material; most often, carbon materials with good electrical conductivity and durability are used. To increase the power output of an MFC, the anode material can be modified to reduce the internal resistance and increase the anode surface area. Therefore, this study determined how modifying a carbon felt anode with reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and a combination of rGO with iron (III) oxide (rGO-Fe) affected electricity generation in an MFC fueled with wastewater. A mixed microbial consortium was used as the anode biocatalyst. The MFC-rGO-Fe produced significantly higher voltages than other cells (average 109.4 ± 75.1 mV in the cycle). Power density curves indicated that modifying the anode with rGO-Fe increased the power of the MFC to 4.5 mW/m2, 9.3- and 3.9-times higher than that of the control MFC and the MFC-rGO, respectively. Anode modification reduced the internal resistance of the cells from 1029 Ω in the control MFC to 370 and 290 Ω in the MFC-rGO and MFC-rGO-Fe, respectively. These results show that a mixture of rGO with iron (III) oxide positively affects electricity production and can be successfully used for anode modification in the MFCs fueled with wastewater.

Opis:
This paper presents the results of investigations into the use of 56 nm nano iron(III) oxide as a combustion rate modifier in a solid heterogeneous rocket propellant (SHRP). A series of solid heterogeneous rocket propellants based on HTPB and ammonium perchlorate with different nano iron(III) oxide contents in the propellant composition were prepared and investigated. The ballistic parameters of the examined propellants were determined by combustion in a laboratory rocket motor (LRM). The ballistic properties were evaluated in the pressure range 5-10 MPa. It was found that the linear burning rate at 7 MPa was increased by 15% for 1% nano iron(III) oxide content in comparison to 0.2% content. Determination of the sensitivity to friction and impact, the calorific value, hardness and decomposition temperature of the derived propellants were also investigated.

Opis:
As a result of the rapid development of nanotechnology and increasing application of nanoproducts in many areas of everyday life, there is a growing risk of production of nanowastes potentially dangerous for the environment. This makes it necessary to investigate the accumulation and toxicity of nanoparticles (NPs) at different trophic levels. In the studies neutron activation was applied for the investigation of iron (II,III) oxide nanoparticle (Fe3O4-NPs) accumulation by Lepidium sativum and Pisum sativum L. Plants were cultivated on growth medium contaminated with different concentrations (0.01-10 mmolźL-1) of Fe3O4-NPs. For the identification of the presence of Fe3O4-NPs in plant tissues gamma spectrometry following iron oxide (II,III) nanoparticles irradiation was applied. Both plant species were found to accumulate iron (II,III) oxide nanoparticles. The highest content of NPs was found in plant roots, reaching 40 g/kg for Pisum sativum L. More than 90% of accumulated NPs were found in roots. Accumulation of Fe3O4-NPs was found to depend on the concentration of nanostructures in the growth medium. The transfer factor for Lepidium sativum roots and shoots and Pisum sativum L. shoots decreased with increasing NP concentration in the medium; for Pisum sativum L. roots the tendency was reversed. Neutron activation of nanoparticles was shown to be a powerful tool for tracing the environmental fate of NPs and their uptake and accumulation in organisms.
