Opis:
Jelutong Kapur and Sanaman are indigenous species at peat swamp forest. These plants have a great economic value. Besides the benefits from wood and sap, leaves can be used for medicinal purposes. The study aimed at obtaining the information related to the potential, distribution and increment diameter. This information was expected to be taken into consideration in the management and development of Jelutong. The study was conducted for 12 months in 12 observation plots, each plot measuring 100x100 m. The data were analyzed descriptively, while the growth patterns were shown graphically. The results showed that there were 100 Jelutong Kapur trees with a range 0–17 trees/plot, an average 8 trees/hectare. It was higher than Jelutong Sanaman, where there were 65 trees with a range of 0–13 trees/plot, an average 5 trees/hectare. However, jelutong Kapur had a diameter range 10.58–35.08 cm, the average increment diameter is 0.69 cm/year, the highest in the diameter class 10–15.9 cm and 22–26.9 cm which is 0.68 cm/year. It is lower than Jelutong Sanaman the diameter of which ranges within 12.61–37.13 cm, the average increment diameter is 0.77 cm/year, the highest increment in the class diameter of 10–15.9 cm is 0.85 cm/year. The highest and lowest number of trees is the same both in the diameter class 16–21.9 cm and 10–15.9 cm. The base area of Jelutong Kapur was 0.41789 m2/hectare, while in the case of Jelutong Sanaman it was 0.30422 m2/hectare. In both of them the 16–21.9 cm diameter class, is dominant, i.e. constitutes 40%. Both species may potentially support the economy for the local people, especially at forest periphery.

Opis:
The pond slider Trachemys scripta is one of the most widespread alien turtle species in the world. Its unregulated trade and the consequent uncontrolled releases into the wild led to negative impacts on the native turtles of the invaded areas. In Italy, alien pond sliders are widely spread, and the occurrence of hatchlings and well-established populations is known in some areas. However, to date in Sicily, only a single female of Trachemys scripta laying eggs was reported. Besides that, nothing is known about the actual reproduction success and establishment of self-sustaining T. scripta populations in Sicily. Therefore, based on 14 previously characterised highly polymorphic microsatellite loci, we aimed to unravel if the alien turtles successfully reproduce in Sicily, in both natural and semi-natural areas (i.e., lake “Biviere di Gela” and “Parco d’Orléans”, respectively). Our results show a clear structuring of the two studied populations. Several full-sibling relationships between the sampled turtles were found, suggesting actual reproduction in the wild of the pond sliders in Sicily. However, further sampling is desirable since no parent-offspring relationships were observed in the studied populations. Due to our results, systematic monitoring of alien pond sliders in the whole of Sicily is crucial for better planning of mitigation strategies in order to protect the native biota of Sicilian inland waters.

Opis:
A dinoflagellate identified as Prorocentrum dentatum, P. shikokuense or P. donghaiense is responsible of massive harmful events. Blooms of a species identified as P. shikokuense have been recently reported in the Mediterranean Sea, and an exotic origin, tentatively introduced by ballast waters from Asia, has been hypothesized. The molecular data based on the small-, large subunit, and internal transcriber spacers ribosomal RNA gene (SSU-, LSU-, ITS rRNA) sequences confirmed P. shikokuense in the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean ribotype is identical to a subtropical North Atlantic ribotype, and with slight divergence from the numerous sequences from the Pacific Ocean. To revisit the relationship between P. shikokuense (=P. donghaiense) and P. obtusidens, we provide the first micrographs of P. dentatum and P. obtusidens, the latter collected from the type locality. Our observations indicate that P. dentatum, P. obtusidens, and P. shikokuense are three different species. Their diagnostic morphological characters are: Prorocentrum dentatum is 44–60 μm long, leaf-shaped, pointed and central posterior end, conspicuous anterior shoulder; P. obtusidens is 33–41 μm long, irregular parallelepiped, almost paralel valve margins, eccentric and pointed posterior end, moderate anterior shoulder; and P. shikokuense is <25 μm long, sunflower seed-shaped, round and centric posterior end, inconspicuous anterior shoulder.

Opis:
This paper presents biopollution assessment results with respect to macrozoobenthic non-indigenous species in the Polish part of the Vistula Lagoon. A biopollution level index (BPL) was applied and evaluated based on the studies on macrozoobenthos conducted in 2010 and 2012 within the frame of several individual projects. Overall 15 macrozoobenthic species were identified, 5 of which were aquatic alien species: Marenzelleria neglecta, Rhitropanopeus harrissi, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Dreissena polymorpha and Rangia cuneata. According to the applied criteria the Vistula Lagoon was moderately influenced by invasive species.

Opis:
Until recently only two palaemonid species inhabited the southern Baltic: Palae- mon adspersus and Palaemonetes varians. Soon after the year 2000 a new species – Palaemon elegans – arrived and quickly established itself as a new component in the trophic web. The objects of this research were to define the energy value and energy resources of P. elegans and to compare them with the corresponding values for the native P. adspersus. These parameters will supply information about this new link in the trophic web and may help to explain the part played by the new prawn and its population in the energy flow. This work demonstrated that the energy values of both prawn species were very much the same: the average energy value of P. elegans was 16.5±2.1 J mg−1 DW (19.3 ± 2.5 J mg−1 AFDW) (N = 150), that of P. adspersus was 16.7 ± 2.1 J mg−1 DW (19.5 ± 2.5 J mg−1 AFDW) (N= 71). No statistically significant differences in energy value were found between the two species with respect to sex, size or season. The results show that P. elegans is an energetically valuable food item for predators. Its energy resources in Polish brackish coastal waters can be as high as 150 kJ m−2; the highest among the palaemonid species in this area, they constitute a rich supply of food for other organisms.
