Opis:
This work presents very simple and efficient filtering techniques to improve the accuracy of the localization procedure based on gradient increments. The procedure can be successfully used to localize a location of leakage that occurred during steady-state pipeline conditions. It also shows possibilities of using the procedure to localize a leak point related to the occurrence of a leak in transient state. The effectiveness of the filtering techniques has been proven by the results of localization errors in function of time response. They relate to the use of real measured pressure signals obtained for the experiments with simulated small leaks between 0.2–0.8% of nominal flow rate. The experiments were carried out on the pilot pipeline described earlier.

Ensuring the homogeneity of the indoor climate throughout the greenhouse is very important for uniform plant cultivation. In the study carried out to determine the indoor climate distribution in the heated greenhouse in the terrestrial climate, indoor temperature, relative humidity, dew point and vapour pressure deficit values were measured from 8 different measurement points. The distribution pattern of the measurement points was made horizontally and vertically at 2, 4 and 6 meters. Sensor placements are grouped vertically at 2 meters (G1: S1, S2 S3), at 4 meters (G2: S4, S5, S6) and at 6 meters (G3: S7, S8). Measurements taken during the day are divided into three parts. The climatic changes in the greenhouse were monitored as daily (00:00-23:30), daytime (08:30-17:30) and night (18:00-08:00) hours. According to the results obtained from the research, it was determined that the indoor climate parameters in the greenhouse change during the average daily, daytime and night hours at different times of the day and at different locations. According to this, it has been determined that it is important for better regulation of the greenhouse climate by monitoring the changes in the plant level as it rises from the greenhouse floor to the ridge with multiple sensors instead of a single sensor.

Different oil companies place shallow casing strings at different depths. Apparently there is no general method or procedure that gives the optimal location. This article is an attempt to define this optimum casing seat location. The potential benefits will improve safety and economy of the operation. The two major factors determine the depth of the casing shoe, that is, the fracture pressure and the pore pressure. A third factor is the lithology, because it is desirable to place the casing shoe in a competent shale section. The methods of predicting fracture gradients for deeper wells already exist. In this article, a method of predicting fracture gradients for shallow well has been derived. This method is combined with kick tolerance criteria to obtain a casing depth selection method. Also, the variation in fracture pressures at any depth has been investigated.

Opis:
The most common means to analyze redox gradients in sediments is by push/pulling electrochemical probes through sediment’ strata while repeating measurements. Yet, as electrodes move up and down they disrupt the texture of the sediment layers thus biasing subsequent measurements. This makes it difficult to obtain reproducible measurements or to study the evolution of electrochemical gradients. One solution for solving this problem is to eliminate actuators and electrode movements altogether, while instead deploying probes with numerous electrodes positioned at various depths in the sediment. This mode of operation requires electrode switching. We discuss an electrode-switching solution for multi-electrode probes, based on Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor (CMOS) multiplexors. In this solution, electrodes can be individually activated in any order, sequence or time frame through digital software commands. We discuss constraints of CMOS-based multilayer electrochemical probes during cyclic voltammetry.

The main aim of this paper is to give some counterexamples to global invertibility of local diffeomorphisms which are interesting in mechanics. The first is a locally strictly convex function whose gradient is non-injective. The interest in this function is related to the Legendre transform. Then I show two non-injective canonical local diffeomorphisms which are rational: the first is very simple and related to the complex cube, the second is defined on the whole ℝ⁴ and is obtained from a recent important example by Pinchuk. Finally, a canonical transformation which is also a gradient (of a convex function) is provided.

Opis:
With the development of automation in ports, the video surveillance systems with automated human detection begun to be applied in open-air handling operation areas for safety and security. The accuracy of traditional human detection based on the video camera is not high enough to meet the requirements of operation surveillance. One of the key reasons is that Histograms of Oriented Gradients (HOG) features of the human body will show great different between front & back standing (F&B) and side standing (Side) human body. Therefore, the final training for classifier will only gain a few useful specific features which have contribution to classification and are insufficient to support effective classification, while using the HOG features directly extracted by the samples from different human postures. This paper proposes a two-stage classification method to improve the accuracy of human detection. In the first stage, during preprocessing classification, images is mainly divided into possible F&B human body and not F&B human body, and then they were put into the second-stage classification among side human and non-human recognition. The experimental results in Tianjin port show that the two-stage classifier can improve the classification accuracy of human detection obviously.

Opis:
Presence-absence bivalve species data for each Early Jurassic stage along southeastern South America between 20 and 46°S present-day latitude were processed by a set of analytical methods to analyse the palaeolatitudinal patterns of diversity and distribution. The expected decrease in species diversity towards higher latitudes is punctuated by a consistent local diversity increase between 34 and 42°, especially evident during Pliensbachian and Toarcian times, which may be due to an abrupt change in palaeogeography at that latitude, coinciding with the Curicó direct connection to the open ocean and the establishment of an increased variety of habitats within the extensive Neuquén Basin. The proportions of systematic groups show relative increases towards both higher latitudes (Crassatelloidea, Nuculanoidea, Pectinoidea, Monotoidea, Inoceramoidea) and lower latitudes (Trigonioidea, Pholadomyoidea, Limoidea, Lucinoidea). Epifaunal bivalves were dominant during the Hettangian but by Pliensbachian–Toarcian times they were less common than infaunal ones, while semi-infaunal species had low diversities during the whole Early Jurassic. This study suggests that (a) large scale geographical conditions should be taken into account for the analysis of latitudinal diversity trends among benthonic faunas; and (b) latitudinal trends of some living bivalve lineages may have a longer and more complex history than previously thought.

A new hybrid method for feed forward neural network training, which combines differential evolution algorithm with a gradient-based approach is proposed. In the method, after each generation of differential evolution, a number of iterations of the conjugate gradient optimization algorithm is applied to each new solution created by the mutation and crossover operators. The experimental results show, that in comparison to the standard differential evolution the hybrid algorithm converges faster. Although this convergence is slower than that of classical gradient based methods, the hybrid algorithm has significantly better capability of avoiding local optima.
W artykule przedstawiono nową, hybrydową metodę uczenia sieci neuronowych, łączącą w sobie algorytm Differential Evolution z podejściem gradientowym. W nowej metodzie po każdej generacji algorytmu Differential Evolution, każde nowe rozwiązanie, powstałe w wyniu działania operatorów krzyżowania i mutacji, poddawane jest kilku iteracjom algorytmu optymalizacji wykorzystującego metodę gradientów sprzężonych.Wyniki eksperymentów wskazują, że nowy, hybrydowy algorytm ma szybszą zbieżność niż standardowy algorytm Differential Evolution. Mimo, iż zbieżność ta jest wolniejsza, niż w przypadku klasycznych metod gradientowych, algorytm hybrydowy potrafi znacznie lepiej unikać minimów lokalnych.

Opis:
We describe the application of 2D ERT (electrical resistivity tomography) surveys to investigate the spatial complexity of fluvial deposits of the Wisła River valley in the eastern part of Kraków (southern Poland). All ERT survey lines were completed within the industrially influenced floodplain of the Wisła River at two research sites. Due to the transformation of the natural state of the environment through many years of industrial activity of the ArcelorMittal Kraków plant, some of the geomorphological elements analysed have been irretrievably transformed and hidden by anthropogenic accumulations such as waste landfills and engineering structures. Hence, many years of soil contamination have changed the primary resistivity characteristics of the subsurface. For this purpose, the measurement array applied combines standard arrays, i.e., Wenner-Schlumberger and Dipole-Dipole, which gave improved results (higher resolution) in comparison to the standard single array. The data interpretation method was supported by the calculation and visualization of the vertical and horizontal gradients of the interpreted resistivity within the resistivity sections. This approach allowed accurate determination of resistivity boundaries on the ERT resistivity sections and thus helped lithological interpretation of the fluvial deposits in the research area. The resistivity of water in a channel located within one of the analysed areas has impacted some of the research results. Furthermore, 2D ERT forward modeling was implemented to generate synthetic datasets. The synthetic data allowed investigation of the influence of groundwater contamination on the resistivity distribution within superficial layers, and also tested the ability of the 2D ERT model to recognize the detailed spatial distribution of palaeomeander (meander scar) infills. All methods have provided new information on the industrially influenced floodplain of the Wisła River in Kraków.

Together with the development of effective and efficient people identification algorithms, biometric authentication systems become increasingly popular and widespread, leading to a significant growth in the number of institutions interested in implementing and using such systems. Although, several research works focused their efforts on these type of solutions, none of the commonly available systems provide a non-cooperative approach to object identification. For this reason, they are not suitable for use in some specific situations, such as people entering the stadium. Therefore, we decided to go up against these limitations and develop biometric identification system for less constrained scenarios. In this paper, we present an evaluation of different algorithms suitable for human silhouette detection in such environment. We focus on investigating their effectiveness and performance under unconstrained conditions, such as different lighting.

Continuum models generalized by fractional calculus are used in different mechanical problems. In this paper, by using the conformable fractional derivative (CFD) definition, a general form of Eringen non-local theory as a fractional non-local model (FNM) is formulated. It is then used to study the non-linear free vibration of a functional graded material (FGM) nano-beam in the presence of von-Kármán non-linearity. A numerical solution is obtained via Galerkin and multiple scale methods and effects of the integer and non-integer (fractional) order of stress gradient (in the non-local stress-strain relation) on the ratio of the non-local non-linear natural frequency to classical non-linear natural frequency of simply-supported (S-S) and clamped-free (C-F) FGM nano-beams are presented.

Dynamics of liquid hydrocarbons spreading over the seawater surface was studied in laboratory conditions. Oil lens expansion rates predicted from classical theories were higher 6–9 times than these measured experimentally. Such a discrepancy could result from onset of Benard-Marangoni cellular flow beneath the expanding oil, observed for volatile hydrocarbons. The vertical temperature gradient ?Tcool related to the evaporation rate was high enough to initiate Marangoni thermal phenomenon. The additional dissipative, turbulent flow is likely to slow down the spreading. The classical Marangoni effect is of secondary importance in reference to the thermal effect in interfacial spreading and mixing processes at sea.
