Aluminium foams are a new group of materials used for impact energy absorbing elements. They are light (typically 10-25% of the density of the metal they are made of) and stiff, and are frequently proposed as a light weight structural material. That is why they often are applied in automotive and transport industry solutions, for example as parts of bumpers. The methods of numerical modelling for open and closed cell aluminium foams are presented in the paper as well as closed and open cellfoam microstructure model. The numerical models of foam ideal microstructures created with shell finite elements are shown. The models were developed on the basis of Kefain tetrakaidecahedrons - structures consisting of six squares and eight hexagons. In the case of closed cell foams, the polyhedron with full walls was adopted. In the case of open cell foams the circle wholes were removed from polyhedron surfaces. Then the numerical analysis of a created models compressive test was carried out with the usage of LS Dyna computer code. The nonlinear procedures were applied. The results were analyzed in the scope of energy absorbing properties of aluminium foams.

The paper presents an analysis of the aluminum porous structure serving as a structural material used in the automotive or marine industry. The subject of the research is the analysis of the mechanical properties of the aluminum porous structure, in particular its ability to absorb energy. The paper presents a description of the manufacturing process, quality control in the form of a statistical capture of geometric parameters of the foam made, as well as an X-ray microanalysis of the chemical composition of EPMA-EDS and the dispersion of components within the structure. In addition, results of static axial compression analysis of aluminum and composite foam specimens are presented.

Alkyl amines are widely used as cationic collectors in flotation. In this work, the flotation foaming behaviors of alkyl amines, including dodecylamine (DDA), di-n-hexylamine (DHA), octadecylamine (ODA), oleylamine (OLA), in the presence or absence of quartz were investigated by a new approach, “foam analyzer”. The effects of pH, reagent dosage, concentration of quartz powder, and particle size on foaming property and stability of bubble were explored, and the physical model of foam structure evolution was established. The adsorption mechanism of amines on quartz surface was studied from molecular structure, surface tension, zeta potential, charging mode, and adsorption form. The results show the foam stability of four amine collectors as follows: OLA > ODA > DHA > DDA. In the range of pH=6-10, the foam properties of the four amines are better. Under the same conditions, the longer carbon chain of aliphatic amine, the more unsaturated bonds, the fewer hydrogen atoms of the amine group, and the corresponding foam properties are better. When the concentration of quartz powder is 8-10%, the foaming and stability of the foam of four kinds amines are the best, The finer quartz powder particle size, the more stable the amine foam and the stronger the foamability.

The article presents the ecological aspects of the lost foam technology. The results of environmental tests carried out on an experimental stand for pouring of moulds with liquid metal and knocking out of castings in the lost foam process were presented. The influence of the lost foam technology on the work environment was determined.

Polyurethane foams due to their easily regulated domain structure are group of polymers with highly variable properties. They are widely used to provide comfort in many areas of daily life. Because of toxic products polyurethane foam waste cannot be disposed by means of thermal degradation, they also show a high resistance to chemical and physical factors. Those properties combined with their low apparent density and widespread use (about 18 million tons per year) lead to a significant volume of waste that is stored in landfills. In Poland, more than 60% of those landfills, certified as well as illegal, are located in rural areas. The aim of this study was to determine the enzymatic abilities of microorganisms isolated from foam waste, which can potentially decompose polyurethane (ureases, esterases, proteases, and laccases), and to determine their ability to grow on a medium containing polyurethane foam as the only carbon source. Most of the tested strains produced ureases while the least produced were laccases and proteases. Four of the tested strains: Epicoccum nigrum, Aspergillusniger, Staphylococcusxylosus and Rhodococcus spp. showed significant growth on the medium with polyurethane foam as sole carbon source.

This paper describes the compressive crush behaviour of spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams with different diameters (6, 8 and 10 mm) and square tubes filled with these spheres. The spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams are net spherical shape fabricated via powder metallurgy methods by heating foamable precursor materials in a mould. The square tubes were filled by pouring the spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams freely (without any bonding). The compressive crush performance of square tubes filled with spheres of closed-cell aluminum foams were compared to that of the empty tubes. The results show a significant influence of the spheres of closed-cell aluminium foam on the average crushing load of the square tubes. The energy absorption in the square tube filled with spheres of closed-cell aluminium foam with diameters of 10 mm is higher than in the other square tubes. The spheres of closed-cell aluminium foams led to improvement of the energy absorption capacity of empty tubes.

This study examined the interaction of solid nanoparticles and anionic and non-ionic surfactant at an air–water interface. Aqueous foams stabilized by silica nanoparticles in water with different levels of salinity were studied in detail. The stability of solid/surfactant dispersion was evaluated visually. Nanoparticles content impact and concentration of surfactant on the foamability, deliquification of foams and structure of wet foams were studied. It was found that the foamability of dispersion depends either on the surfactant concentration or on the nanoparticles concentration. The adsorption of hydrophobically modified silica particles and surfactants reduces the air/water interface tension. The results of the examinations showed that the use of nanoparticles allows to increase the efficiency of brine unloading even up to 20%. Surfactant particle and nanosilica present synergistic action, use of 4 wt% of nanoparticles allows to reduce surfactant consumption up to half. The cost of the preparation of the proposed dispersion is slightly higher, about 5%, compared to the sole surfactant.

Metallic foams are materials that are subject of an ongoing research with the broad applicability in many different areas (e.g. automotive industry, building industry, medicine, etc.). These metal materials contain in their structure artificially created pores. These pores give them specific properties, such as: large rigidity at low density, high thermal conductivity, capability to absorb energy, etc. Since the discovery of porous metallic materials numerous methods of production have been developed. The aim of the paper is to introduce effective casting methods of manufacturing of metallic foams, namely cast metal filters from the aluminum alloy. Research deals with investment casting with use of pattern made of polymeric foam, which is used for production of metallic foam with open pores. The main disadvantage of this procedure consists in removing the mould material without damaging the fine structure of the cast filter. Plaster is used as the mould material and the most important result of this paper is the presentation of the effective procedure of plaster removal from the porous structure of cast filters.
Piany metalowe są przedmiotem wielu badań gdyż znajdują szerokie zastosowanie w wielu dziedzinach np. produkcji samochodów. budownictwie czy w medycynie. W swojej strukturze zawierają sztucznie wytworzone pory, zapewniające uzyskanie specyficznych właściwości jak duża wytrzymałość, niewielka gęstość, wysokie przewodnictwo cieplne zdolność do absorpcji energii itp. Od czasu wynalezienia porowatych materiałów metalowych opracowano wiele metod ich wytwarzania. Celem opracowania jest wprowadzenie efektywnych metod odlewniczych produkcji pian metalowych, szczególnie ze stopów glinu. Studium zajmuje się precyzyjną metodą odlewania przy zastosowaniu modelu wykonanego z piany polimerowej stosowanej w produkcji piany z otwartymi porami. Główna niedogodność metody polega na trudności usuwania materiału formierskiego, bez naruszenia delikatnej struktury odlewanego filtra. Jako materiał formierski stosuje się gips i najważniejszym wynikiem pracy jest przedstawienie efektywnej procedury usuwania gipsu z porowatej struktury odlanego filtra.

The subject of the paper is a circular plate under radial compression. The plate is made of metal foam. Properties of the plate vary across its thickness. The middle plane of the plate is its symmetry plane. The field of displacement of any cross section of the plate, nonlinear components of the strain field and the stress field are defined. Basing on the Hamilton principle, a system of differential equations of dynamic stability of the plate is formulated. This basic system of equations is approximately solved. The results of the studies are compared to the homogeneous circular plate and shown in figures.
Przedmiotem pracy jest płyta kołowa obciążona promieniowo. Płyta wykonana jest z piany metalowej. Właściwości mechaniczne płyty są zmienne na jej grubości. Płaszczyzna środkowa płyty jest jej płaszczyzną symetrii. Zdefiniowano pole przemieszczeń dla dowolnego przekroju poprzecznego płyty, nieliniowe odkształcenia oraz naprężenia. Układ równań różniczkowych stateczności dynamicznej płyty zdefiniowano na podstawie zasady Hamiltona. Układ ten rozwiązano w sposób przybliżony. Wyniki badań numerycznych tej płyty porównano z odpowiednimi wielkościami dla płyty jednorodnej i przedstawiono na rysunkach.

One of the possible options as a material for protective layers is aluminum foams which become also very popular due to their lightweight and excellent plastic energy absorbing properties. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry with continued research to further understand foam properties. Compressed foaming materials exhibit extensive plastic response, while the initial elastic region is limited in tension by a tensile brittle-failure stress. Aluminum foams have become also an attractive material as blast protective layers due to their desirable compressive properties. With different material engineering techniques (as, for example double-layer foam cladding) they can be customized to achieve the most desirable properties. Energy absorption capacity of foams microstructures under blast load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model Initial research indicates that energy absorbed by the cladding is much larger than that under quasi-static conditions due to strain rate effect. In this paper a numerical model of a closed cell aluminum foam idealistic microstructure was presented. The quasi static compression tests were carried out with the use of LS Dyna computer code. Then the sample was numerically loaded with the blast wavefrom detonation of explosives and its behavior was analyzed. The results ofboth analyses were compared.

Recently, a new class of ceramic foams with porosity levels up to 90% has been developed as a result of the association of the gelcasting process and aeration of the ceramic suspension. This paper presents and discusses original results advertising sound absorbing capabilities of such foams. The authors man- ufactured three types of alumina foams in order to investigate three porosity levels, namely: 72, 88, and 90%. The microstructure of foams was examined and typical dimensions and average sizes of cells (pores) and cell-linking windows were found for each porosity case. Then, the acoustic absorption coefficient was measured in a wide frequency range for several samples of various thickness cut out from the foams. The results were discussed and compared with the acoustic absorption of typical polyurethane foams proving that the alumina foams with high porosity of 88-90% have excellent sound absorbing properties competitive with the quality of sound absorbing PU foams of higher porosity.

In this study, palladium-modified nickel foam substrate was applied to examine ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in 0.1 M NaOH supporting solution. An EOR catalyst was prepared by physical vapour deposition (PVD) of palladium onto Ni foam material. Temperature-dependent kinetics of the EOR were studied over the temperature range: 20-60°C by means of a.c. impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry techniques. Deposition of a noble metal additive was clearly exposed through scanning electron microscopy: SEM/EDX-supported analysis. Most importantly, this work investigated the effect of pre-deposited fullerene on nickel foam, on the catalytic (EOR) properties of such-produced Ni foam/Pd composite material.

The study presents the results of an experimental method for purification of household sewage on the biofilters filled with polyurethane waste in the form of trims of upholstery foam (PUF). We assessed the removal effectiveness of organic compounds, ammonium nitrogen and total suspended solids from sewage pre-treated in a septic tank at hydraulic loading ranging from 31.8 to 229.2 mm-1. The results of five month study identified the biofilter filled with 30 cm thick foam as the most effectively removing BOD5, CODCr, N-NH4+ and total suspended solids. Average reduction in pollutant levels for this filter reached 95%, 94%, 84% and 68%, respectively. PUR foam in the form of trims of upholstery foam filling the vertical flow filters ensured favorable conditions for the development of heterotrophic and nitrifying bacteria without any need for additional aeration.

Metal foams are new, as yet imperfectly characterized, class of materials with low densities and novel physical, mechanical, thermal, electrical and acoustic properties. They offer a potential for lightweight structures, for energy absorption, and for thermal management; and at least some of them are cheap. Such characteristics have been appreciated by the automotive industry in the aspect of crash and impact phenomenon. Energy absorption capacity of foams under dynamic load was analytically confirmed based on a rigid-perfectly plastic-locking foam model. In this paper the development process of a real closed cell foam microstructure based on finite element model with the use of SD scanning is shown. Computed tomography (CT) is a medical imaging method employing tomography created by computer processing. Digital geometry processing is used to generale a three-dimensional image of the inside of an object from a large series of two-dimensional X-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation. The numerical analyses carried out with the usage of LS Dyna computer code of the quasi static and dynamic compression tests are presented. The most important mechanisms and phenomena that appeared in the microstructural sample are described. In the final part of these investigations the comparison process between numerical and experimental test was performed. The results confirmed the good correspondence between both tests.

Metal and polyurethane foams exhibit interesting properties. They are light, have good acoustic and/or magnetic isolation as well as ability to absorb the vibration and impact energy. They are used for sandwich panels, impact absorbers (i.e. as elements of the buffer constructions in rail vehicles), fillers ofconstruction parts, bodies of vehicles (i.e. floating combat vehicles) and for dividing walls of vessels and others. Speciflcally made open cell foams demonstrate auxetic properties and the shape memory effect. Such materials are very good for seats in aircrafts which may protect pilots and passengers during crashes and limit heavy backbone injuries. Foams are used for filtering purposes. Foams or their in combination with different types of fillers (i.e. elastomers) or the ceramic reinforcement may be used in impact energy absorbing panels for military aim (protection against an explosion shock wave and splinters). In the paper aluminium open-cell foam structures were investigated for their energy absorption ability. For this purpose a series of numerical 3D models were applied. Geometry of the models was based on Kehin's polyhedrons. Tests of uniaxial compression were simulated with the use of LS-Dyna computer code. Complex contact phenomena were considered. Preliminary test were performed with the use of single foam cell models. Further simulations were conducted using 3x3x3 cell models. The results were analyzed as force/time characteristics.
