    The article aims to examine the initial phase of the marriage of Jan Zamoyski with Griseldis Báthory, the issue of change of the bride’s name, and the problems caused by the newlyweds’ difference of faith. Despite the plans of king Stephen and hetman Zamoyski, the young bride did not become a Catholic. Her upbringing by her Protestant mother and grandmother overrode the political interests of her Catholic male relatives.
    Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie początkowej fazy małżeństwa Jana Zamoyskiego z Gryzeldą Batory, przyjrzenie się kwestii zmiany nazwiska panny młodej oraz problemów wynikających z różnych wyznań małżonków. Wbrew planom króla Stefana Batorego i hetmana Zamoyskiego Gryzelda nie przeszła na katolicyzm. Wychowanie przez protestancką matkę i babkę wzięło górę nad politycznymi interesami katolickich członków jej rodziny.

    Digital games represent a new media form dominated by men, either as characters or as players. The perception of digital games as ‘Boys’ Fun’ has been denied by the latest research that points to the fact that women are increasingly accessing this medium. But the analysis of digital games shows that gender roles appear in this media as real-world stereotypes. It means that there is discrimination against women who often have a passive role, whether they appear as victims or as sexual objects. When they are not damsels in distress helplessly awaiting their saviour or playing heroines, then, they are most often portrayed as rebellious beauties with oversized dimensions. The subject of this paper is female representation in digital games. Authors used content analysis of 30 digital games with female protagonists, published at J Station, to examine the female gender roles in such digital games. The aim of the empirical study is to demonstrate that the elements of gender discrimination are present in digital games and that they can lead to the creation of harmful stereotypes against women.

    This article looks at the mobility of highly skilled female migrants from the perspective of the post-socialist semi-peripheral countries in Eastern Europe. It analyses chosen aspects of the biographical experiences of highly skilled women from three post-USSR republics bordering the European Union – namely Ukraine, Belarus, and Russia – in Poland, a post-socialist country itself but also an EU member-state. The empirical analysis focuses on their lifestyle changes and choices, made through the experience of living in a new, though quite familiar Polish culture, which is both more emancipated (Western) while, at the same time, pertaining to some of the familiar (Eastern) patterns. Due to this liminal nature of the host country, the adaptation process of migrants is easier and comes at a lower biographical cost. In the analysis, I explore two notions: the gender roles renegotiation and the changes in the women’s approach towards the external manifestations of femininity, which I contrast with their reflections of the changes undergone. As for the gender role renegotiation, three main approaches were described varying by the degree to which the old, familiar patterns are maintained. In terms of the external notions of femininity, while taking care of one’s looks is still an observable element of the migrants’ identity, they do take advantage of the wider spectrum of options available in the host society, and try to blend in with the casual big-city crowd. The article was written on the basis of empirical material in the form of twenty in-depth, unstructured interviews, which were confronted with the selected subject literature.

    Post-accession Female Mobility between Poland and Norway. New Trends and New Ways of Thinking about MigrationThis paper presents recent research on Polish female migration to Norway. We focus our discussion of existing literature on this subject on issues of gendered migration trajectories, children and adult education, career paths of migrant women, and the effects of migration on families and communities in Norway and Poland. There are many thematic and methodological gaps in recent scholarship on migration of Polish women to Norway despite an increased number of research projects and publications. Most scholars center on social attitudes towards migration, and consequently decisions on migration made by women and their families. Poakcesyjna mobilność kobiet pomiędzy Polską a Norwegią. Nowe kierunki myślenia o migracjiW tekście przedstawiamy trendy w badaniach migracji Polek do Norwegii we współczesnej literaturze. Skupiamy się na kilku wątkach: genderowych ścieżkach migracyjnych, edukacji dzieci i dorosłych, pracy zawodowej kobiet oraz wpływie migracji na sytuację rodzin i społeczności w Norwegii i Polsce. Analizując stan wiedzy zawarty w tekstach naukowych, dostrzegamy luki w wiedzy i stosowanej metodologii. Wskazujemy również na wpływ prezentowanych trendów opisów migracji na społeczną ocenę migracji, a w konsekwencji na decyzje podejmowane przez migrujące kobiety i rodziny. Mimo wzrostu liczby projektów badawczych i publikacji naukowych dotyczących ostatnich migracji Polaków do Norwegii wiele aspektów życia Polek-migrantek nie zostało dotąd przeanalizowanych.

    The objective of the article is to analyse how Shirley Jackson’s interpretation of Gothic literature became a tool with which the writer could present the social and cultural changes of her time. Jackson uses elements of the Female Gothic to describe the situation of women in the 1950s in the United States. In the article, the author discusses Jackson’s two short stories – The Daemon Lover and The Tooth. Focusing on the mother–daughter relationship, the author uses psychoanalytical theories to prove that women in the American author’s writings attempt to oppose the social roles attributed to them. The denied longing for a mother makes it difficult or even impossible for the protagonists of Jackson’s short stories to develop their own personality and achieve independence – and thus a significant position in society.
    Celem artykułu jest odpowiedź na pytanie, w jaki sposób literatura gotycka w wydaniu Shirley Jackson stawała się narzędziem, za pomocą którego pisarka mogła przedstawić zmiany społeczne i kulturalne swoich czasów. Jackson używa elementów gotyku kobiecego do opisania sytuacji kobiet w latach 50. XX wieku w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Autorka artykułu omawia dwa opowiadania Jackson –The Daemon Lover i The Tooth. Skupiając się na relacji matka-córka, autorka za pomocą teorii psychoanalitycznych udowadnia, że kobiety w tekstach amerykańskiej pisarki próbują przeciwstawić się przypisywanym im rolom społecznym. Wyparta tęsknota za matką utrudnia bądź nawet uniemożliwia bohaterkom opowiadań Jackson wykształcenie własnej osobowości i osiągnięcie niezależności, a tym samym znaczącej pozycji w społeczeństwie.

    Occupation and Gender: New Research Perspectives on German Occupation in Poland World War II radically changed Polish society. Brutal occupation politics and farreaching deportations destroyed social structures and relations. This affected society as a whole and individuals in their social roles. Hence, the occupation of Poland in World War II also had an impact on gender roles and relations. The aim of this article is to re-examine the German occupation of Poland with a focus on the experiences of women and men during occupation. Firstly, I will resume the state of research regarding the experiences of female German occupiers, then looking at (sexual) power relations between the occupied and the occupiers, and then ask for the intrusion of German occupation in the established societal order in regard to gender. The paper aims at resuming the state of research and to open up a panorama of still under-researched questions.
