The paper presents analysis of the impact of personal development training on the participants’ subjective level of safety at school. The training consisted of physical exercise training, healthy nutrition training and training aiming at enhancement of individual safety, which covered: 1. Prevention – preventing violence by showing negative consequences for the violator 2. Developing in students competences which enhanced their safety at school – their ability to react assertively and to choose relevant actions in threatening situations. All the 384 training participants, who were subject to research, demonstrated increase in the level of self-esteem, self-confidence and the feeling of emotional safety. Participants didn’t admit any problems with physical safety – they didn’t feel physically threatened, either before, or after the training.

In 1914, the year World War I broke out, Adolf Reinach, one of Edmund Husserl’s most notable students, a teacher and mentor of the young generation of phenomenologists, abandoned his work at the university and enlisted in the army. At the front, as a result of various experiences, he went through a vehement turn to religion. He left traces of his conversion in the notes about the religious act he made most probably while in the trenches. In them, Reinach conducted a thorough analysis of the human encounter with the Absolute, discussing the conditions for the opening up of the finite being to infinity and the detailed structure of the religious act. The latter, according to the phenomenologist, is constituted in the feeling consisting in the sense of dependence and safety experienced in the presence of God and the response to it, the sense of gratitude and trust. The conclusion of the whole act is the moment of affirmation of the human being who “in” God finds peace and happiness, not desiring to aspire to or strive for anything else.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the definitions of the word wstyd ‘shame, embarrassment’ formulated by the students of the Faculty of Humanities at Maria Curie Skłodowska University in Lublin (overall, one hundred and fifty people). Before the analysis is undertaken, the author refers to what is known about this complex and equivocal feeling. Most of the students provided open, cognitive definitions of the word, but some of them also gave closed, structural and ostensive definitions. In the majority of the instances, the notion was defined in negative terms, but in a few cases its positive aspects were mentioned. In such cases, wstyd was described as a regulator of behaviour, as a factor which prevents people from acting in socially unacceptable ways. Hence such terms used in its description as a compass or a brake.

Usually philosophers worry about the existence of mind, or consciousness, or persons, or other difficult-to-explain phenomena. Having posited matter or nature, or fields, they wonder where can person or consciousness originate? This kind of thinking is backward. Only persons ask such questions. Persons exist. I turn the tables on the traditional problem of person by asking whether anything impersonal really exists. I argue that the impersonal almost exists, using the theory of feeling of Max Scheler and supplementing it with insights from Alfred North Whitehead and Josiah Royce. Even though feeling almost succeeds in divesting itself of the pre-supposed act of the person, but its concrete actuality blocks such complete self-abstraction.

Cheerleading is a new sport, practiced in 110 nations; since 2016 enjoys provisional Olympic status. Its leaders claim that it is a “happy” sport, but research on its psychological effects is lacking. In this field-study we examined core-affect, positive-affect, and negative-affect in 65 cheerleaders before, during, after, and one-hour after a cheerleading training. Core-affect was more positive during and immediately after training, but it tapered off one hour following the training when feeling states were still more positive than at baseline. Negative-affect declined linearly from baseline to one-hour following training when it became significantly lower than its previous values. Positive-affect showed quadratic dynamics, in parallel with arousal, being higher during and immediately after training than during baseline, or one-hour after training. These results demonstrate for the first time that cheerleading is a “happy” sport, which apart from the skill-development also yields positive psychological emotions both during and after training.

W rezultacie inspiracji, której dostarcza filozoficzne dziedzictwo Edith Stein, autorka sformułowała problemy wyrażające się w pytaniach: Czy możliwe jest rzetelne poznanie cudzych stanów psychicznych (zwłaszcza emocji, uczuć, nastrojów)? Czy dany człowiek ma dostęp do przeżyć innego psychofizycznego indywiduum? Autorka rozważyła też sposoby prezentowania się owemu indywiduum przeżyć psychicznych innych ludzi, istotę „wczucia” (pozwalającą odróżnić je od innych aktów, takich jak spostrzeganie, równoczesne doznanie zbiorowe, ideacja, przypomnienie czy antycypacja cudzych stanów psychicznych, wyobrażenie własnych bądź cudzych przeżyć), jego genezę (podłoże genetyczno-psychologiczne) i rodzaje. Opierając się na poglądach Stein, która ujmowała wczucie jako rodzaj doświadczania drugiego człowieka (konstytucji psychofizycznej: cielesności i duchowości), autorka uznaje wczucie za formę współobecności, która pozwala doświadczyć podobieństw i różnic między własną a cudzą psychiką i w ten sposób kształtować postawę przychylności wobec społeczności powszechnej – ludzkości. Autorka podejmuje próbę zestawienia stanu wiedzy dotyczącej zagadnienia wczucia z osiągnięciami nauk szczegółowych w zakresie empatii, przywołując sposób ujmowania empatii w psychologii i pedagogice i skupiając się na analizie koncepcji, odmian i znaczenia empatii. Znaczenie współodczuwania trudno przecenić, gdyż stanowi ono doznanie duchowe, emocjonalne, moralne i społeczne, sprzyjając rozwojowi więzi uczuciowej, ułatwiając proces przywiązania oraz komunikację społeczną (zwłaszcza konstruktywne rozwiązywanie problemów bądź konfliktów wewnątrzosobowych i interpersonalnych) i adaptację w nowym środowisku. Umiejętność ta może również generować inne korzystne zmiany w rozwoju filogenetycznym i ontogenetycznym człowieka, na przykład profilować dyspozycje psychiczne, takie jak allocentryzm, altruizm, wyrozumiałość, takt, autentyczność, wrażliwość uczuciowa i moralna. Postawy otwartości na innych ludzi, tolerancji, afirmacji życia czy miłości jawią się jako skutek doskonalenia między innymi zdolności współodczuwania. W końcowej części artykułu autorka akcentuje, że w namyśle naukowym nad wczuciem (jako pojęciem filozoficznym) a empatią (pojęciem przyjętym w psychologii i pedagogice) warto nie tracić z pola widzenia zadań priorytetowych, którymi są zarówno rzetelne poznanie fenomenu współodczuwania, jak i kształtowanie w społecznościach tej cennej ludzkiej umiejętności pozwalającej dostrzegać w obcym przyjaznego członka ludzkiego rodu.
Inspired by the philosophical output of Edith Stein, the author raises the following problems: Is it possible to have reliable knowledge of another person’s mental states (especially of his or her emotions, feelings, or moods)? Can a given person gain access to the experiences of another psycho-physical individuum? The author discusses the ways in which other people’s mental states present themselves to an individual, the essence of Einfühlung (thus distinguishing it from other acts, such as perception, simultaneous collective experience, ideation, remembering or anticipating another person’s mental states, imagining one’s own or another person’s experiences), its origin (the genetic-psychological background), and types. Following the ideas of Stein, who understood Einfühlung as a mode of experiencing another human being (his or her psycho-physical constitution: corporeality and spirituality), the author describes Einfühlung as a form of co-presence that enables the experience of similarities and differences between one’s own and another person’s psyche, shaping in this way the attitude of benevolence towards the universal community: humankind. The author attempts to compare the present knowledge on Einfühlung with the results of sciences concerning empathy, discussing the ways in which the latter is perceived in psychology and pedagogics, its various concepts, kinds and significance. The importance of co-feeling can hardly be overestimated. As a spiritual, emotional, moral and social experience conducive to the development of emotional relationships, it facilitates the process of emotional attachment and social communication (especially constructive solving of intrapersonal or interpersonal problems and conflicts), as well as adaptation to a new environment. Co-feeling may also generate other favorable changes in the phylogenetic and ontogenetic development of the human being by promoting such psychological dispositions as allocentrism, altruism, forbearance, tact, authenticity, as well as emotional and moral sensitivity. Openness to others, tolerance, affirmation of life and love also emerge as a result of perfecting, among others, the capacity for co-feeling. In the final part of the article the author emphasizes that scholarly reflection on the concepts of Einfühlung (as it is used in philosophy) and ‘empathy’ (as a psychological and pedagogical notion) must not becloud the priority tasks: to gain a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon of co-feeling and to shape, in human communities, the valuable skill that makes it possible to perceive strangers as friendly members of the human race. This essay notes the relationship between meaning and the felt passage of time. The concrete experience of fluctuations in the rapidity of passage seems to be universal to the human condition. We often associate the rapid passage of time with pleasure. This article shows that this commonly held view of passage is mistaken and that the more fundamental relationship between transformations of passage is found in fluctuations of meaning. Through explorations of boredom, ambition, and concern, this essay illustrates this connection between passage and meaning through an analysis of these feelings on what the author calls “the axis of fluidity,” a theoretical construction utilized to measure the experience of passage. The result of this essay is an assertion that fluctuations in the saturation of experience with meaning influences the feeling of passage. At the end of the work, an unresolved problem appears, and a potentially ameliorating hypothesis is offered.

Affective management is a new concept which suggests that top managers should take stakeholders’ affective experiences into account when making their management decisions. To show that this concept could contribute to the improvement of management performance in organizations, this study investigated the correlations between the affectiveness of top management and management performance indices. Our questionnaire based on the Affective Management Scorecard was employed to assess top managers’ recognition of the importance, as well as the actual practices of affective management. Top managers from 43 Thai organizations participated in the study. A correlation analysis was conducted to observe whether affective management indices would correlate with management performance indices, such as return on equity, return on assets, price to earnings ratio, and price to book value ratio. The findings showed that the results for organizations practicing affective management were positively correlated with their management performance in both profitability and good perceptions by investors.

The article is an attempt to present the linguistic explication of the feeling of fear in the Russian language. As it was proved by the linguistic data, the lexeme ‘fear’ (‘страх’) has several synonyms with different semantic value, such as ‘тревога’, ‘ужас’, ‘паника’. The feeling itself can be caused by real or irrational circumstances treated or estimated by the subject as threat. The paper analyses the expressions, phraseologisms and proverbs related to the feeling of fear. They present how the word ‘fear’ (‘страх’) is used in the language and on its semantic level. What is more, the phraseologisms prove that the majority of physical symptoms of the feeling ‘fear’ obtain their linguistic explication. Proverbs complete the received picture with the colloquial judgments about the importance of courage and the disapproval of fear.

BackgroundEmployees in the aviation sector constitute an especially interesting professional group due to a lack of empirical data on their psychological functioning, and the fact that this industry is currently experiencing a phase of dynamic development. However, taking into consideration the automation and specific qualities of the sector, human resources should be given much more attention as they are constantly challenged and face diverse difficulties at work while cooperating in various organic and non-organic teams.Material and MethodsThe study included 326 employees of Pyrzowice (Poland), Szymany (Poland), and Košice (Slovakia) airports (however, people employed at the Polish airports were predominant, N = 250). The average age of the participants was 39.3 years, and the sample was predominantly male (N = 278, 85.3%). During the research procedure, the following questionnaires were used: the Feeling of Threat in the Workplace Questionnaire, the Feeling of Stress Questionnaire, the 10-Item Personality Inventory, and the Mini-COPE Stress Inventory.ResultsThe regression analysis indicated that personality variables did not allow for predicting the level of stress. However, the helplessness-oriented style (β = 0.191, p = 0.004), avoidant behaviors (β = 0.244, p < 0.001), and the feeling of threat (β = 0.147, p = 0.009) were significant predictors of the feeling of stress, and their high level corresponded with a higher level of stress. The final model explained 23% of the total variance in the feeling of stress.ConclusionsBased on the results, practical recommendations should concern developing employees’ skills related to monitoring stressors and strengthening proactivity in difficult or threatening situations. Such proactive strategies may decrease the tendency to use avoidant and helplessness-oriented behaviors that may cause a higher level of stress perceived by employees. Also, the authors recommend providing training and support using some cognitive behavioral techniques because it seems that the regular application of those methods supports the development of agency and control while facing challenging situations. In Japan, religion is still a current subject of educational discourse. This article presents a picture of the evolution of this discourse over the last two centuries. First, the article reconstructs transformations which have taken place in the relationship between education and religion in Japan, with particular emphasis on the period of Japanese educational reform. Then, on the basis of two items of school learning – lessons on morality and ethics – the current controversy is presented with regard to the relation between education and religion. In the first of these analyses, the question is primarily about how public schools deal with religion, and specifically with religious feeling. In the second, the author considers how these same schools transmit knowledge on topics related to different religions. Finally, the article discusses moments of continuity and change which appear with regard to the role to be attributed to religion in Japanese education.

Poczucie winy jest jedną z najczęściej wymienianych emocji o społecznych źródłach, jednakże wciąż jeszcze zbyt mało wiadomo na temat procesów tworzenia osobistego i zbiorowego poczucia winy. Celem tego artykułu jest uporządkowanie sposobów ujęcia tego problemu. W pierwszej części artykułu omówione zostaną problemy, jakie wiążą się z definiowaniem pojęcia „poczucie winy” oraz jego sklasyfikowaniem. Następnie omówione zostaną wybrane teorie socjologiczne, które mogą okazać się szczególnie przydatne do analizy tego zespołu emocji, a szczególnie społecznego procesu wzbudzania, podtrzymywania i zarządzania poczuciem winy. W ostatniej części przedstawione zostaną wyniki analizy wywiadów pogłębionych z młodzieżą niedostosowaną społecznie na temat sposobów przeżywania winy w ich osobistym życiu.
Feeling guilty is said to be one of important emotions with the social origin, but still little is known about the process of its construction in individual and collective life. The aim of the article is to show different possibilities of researching the problem. The first part of the text poses the problem of defining and classifying the feeling of guilt. Then, selected research perspectives are analyzed connected with arousing, maintaining, and managing the feeling. The final part presents the result of interviews (IDI) with socially maladjusted boys about their feelings of guilt in personal life.

This paper demonstrates personal safety as a vital element in a human being’s life, as the number and types of threats are growing. People quite often experience enslavement in various aspects of their functioning. It is not always the result of external threats, but also of individual No.s. A human being has many options, and a multitude of possibilities and opportunities, while these in turn can create chaos. Contemporary enslavement is growing increasingly rapidly on the global scale, having spread across nearly all spheres of life. Enslavement has also become multidimensional, similarly to freedom. This paper encompasses the characteristics of an enslaved person, and the sense of personal freedom. The central concept of this paper shows that personal (individual, human) safety, together with the sense of peace, stability, and own development, are the most important values in the life of every human being.
