Opis:
It seems that essential oils can be a good ingredient in effective preparations against Dermanyssus gallinae. Dermanyssus affects animal health leading to financial losses and bird welfare issues. Collected mites were treated with various essential oils in four (20, 50, 80 and 100%) concentrations at a dose of 0.28 mg/cm2. The direct toxicity of the essential oils, mineral oil and spinosad to D. gallinae was tested in the laboratory. Eucalyptus oil was the most toxic essential oil in all concentrations to D. gallinae (87.6 - 97.6% mortality at all four concentrations), while geranium, pine and rosemary oils showed mortality rates of 14.2 - 68.2%. High mortality after 48 hours of contact was also recorded for the oil of cloves at 80% dilution (85.1% mortality), lavender 100% (94.2% mortality). Similarly, the thyme essential oil produced 83.5 - 93.2% mortality in three concentrations: 50, 80 and 100%. The mineral oil was the least effective oil against mites. Spinosad showed high effectiveness against D. gallinae.

Opis:
One of the most important problems in horticultural seed science and technology nowadays is looking for new methods to improve seed quality. Especially interesting are the ones, in which compounds of natural origin are used. One of such groups is ethereal oils from plants. The commercial seed samples of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. ‘Dumka’) were soaked in 9 different treatments of 5% alcoholic solution of camphor tree (Cinnamomum camphora L.) ethereal oil and 9 different treatments of 5% alcoholic solution of patchouli plant (Pogostemon cablin Benth.) ethereal oil. Then the seeds were routinely tested for seed germination, the length of the received seedlings was also measured and the seeds health status was evaluated. The tested ethereal oils had no effect on the germination of lettuce seeds. However, soaking the seeds in the ethereal oils solutions did decrease the percentage of dead seeds in the tested samples. Soaking of the seeds in the ethereal oils solutions also increased the percentage of healthy ungerminated seeds. Treating the seeds with the concentrations of the ethereal oils solutions, although had no effect on their germination, still shortened the length of seedlings. Moreover, the used ethereal oils lowered the amount of identified Alternaria alternata and Cladosporium sphaerospermum fungi on the seeds.
Następnie nasiona poddano rutynowej ocenie kiełkowania, zmierzono długość otrzymanych siewek i oceniono zdrowotność nasion.

The current research was conducted to determine the effect of thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.), and French lavender (Lavandula stoechas L.) essential oils and their combinations on serum, bone and excreta mineral content and bone breaking strength in broilers. A total of 640 day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were randomly allocated to eight treatment groups with five replicates each. The experimental diets were prepared by adding essential oils to the control diet as follows: control (0 mg/kg), thyme essential oil (50 mg/kg), rosemary essential oil (50 mg/kg), French lavender essential oil (50 mg/kg), thyme + rosemary (25+25 mg/kg), thyme + French lavender (25+25 mg/kg), rosemary + French lavender (25+25 mg/kg) and thyme + rosemary + French lavender (16,7+16,7+16,7 mg/kg). No difference was shown between the treatment groups in serum content of Ca, Mg, P or Zn (P > 0,05). Tibia Ca, Mg and P contents were statistically significant (P < 0,01), while tibia breaking strength was not significant (P > 0,05). Excreta Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, P and Zn contents were significantly affected by the dietary treatments (P < 0,01), but excreta Cu content was not statistically significant (P > 0,05). The addition of thyme essential oil to the diet was effective in increasing tibia Ca, P and Mg content. The essential oils used, especially their binary mixtures, can be effective in reducing the amount of minerals excreted in the faeces.

Leather products provide an ideal environment for microbial growth. In order to prevent the appearance and spread of various types of microorganisms, it is treated with selected biocides and even essential oils. The aim of this paper was to investigate the antifungal activity of selected essential oils applied to finished chromium tanned leather which is intended for leather fancy products. Antifungal activity was evaluated according to the PN-EN 14119: 2005 standard. Four finished chromium tanned leathers were tested, each of which was soaked in the following essential oils: tea tree essential oil at a concentration of 1, 2 and 5% and thyme essential oil at concentration of 1, 2 and 5%. The results obtained indicated that leather finishing with thyme essential oil showed the antimicrobial activity against Aspergillus niger, Chaetomium globosum and Candida albicans strains. The application of 5% thyme essential oil to leather samples inhibited the growth of all strains tested. Using tea tree essential oil on leather samples showed a antimicrobial effect only against Candida albicans. The application of essential oils in the leather finishing process may be an alternative to biocides used in the tanning industry.

This research aimed to measure the impact of provenance on the yield, chemical profile and antimicrobial activity of Rosmarinus officinalis essential oil (EO) collected from cultivated and wild plants from two different regions in Morocco (Fez and Figuig). The chemical composition analysis was accomplished utilizing the GC-MS techniques. Sixteen compounds were identified in the EO of both samples, dominated by 1,8-cineole (32.18%), camphor (16.20%) and α-pinene (15.40%) in cultivated type. The α-pinene (51.19) presents the majority compound in the rosemary samples collected from the wild populations. The antimicrobial activity was investigated by using the broth dilution methods against yeast, four bacterial strains and two molds. Rosemary aerial part provided EO with the highest yield and comes from Figuig. The GC-MS analysis demonstrated the existence of two chemotypes of oils: α-pinene as well as 1,8-cineole/camphor/α-pinene. Both EOs showed good antimicrobial activity against all microbial strains. The essential oil produced by Fez plants was the most effective against the selected microorganisms having MIC values of 0.315–2.5 mg/L.

Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) is an infective agent and the main resourceful factor of chronic, active ot type B gastritis, peptic and duodenal ulcer, gastric carcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tumors. Nowadays, pharmological treatment of H. pylori infections attract attention beside antibiotic treatment. The aim of this study is to analyse the chemical composition of the essential oils of Thymus capitatus and the antimicrobial activity against H. pylori. Aerial parts of wild growing plant materials were collected during flowering stage from three different locations. Essential oil composition analyses were performed simultaneously by GC-FID and GC-MS systems. The antimicrobial activity of the essential oil were tested by broth dilution method. The thymol percentage was determined as more than half of the essential oil composition of Thymus capitatus-Yedidalga (51.9%) and Thymus capitatus –Yıldırım (57.1%); however, the composition of thymol was 47.2% followed by 15.1% (p-cymene), 10.0% (-terpinene) and 5.7% (carvacrol) for Thymus capitatus-Boğaz/Girne.The essential oil from Thymus capitatus- Boğaz/Girne showed the lowest MIC and MBC values and the strongest bactericidal activity against H. pylori compared to the other tested essential oils. Bactericidal efficacy of essential oil of Thymus capitatus on H. pylori could have been affected due to the varied rates of major compounds. Thymus capitatus essential oil could be an alternative way for the treatment of H. pylori infections.

Abstract: Dipsacus fullonum L. syn. D. sylvestris is a biennial plant from the Dipsacaceae family. It grows in Europe, North Africa and Asia Minor. It has been used in folk medicine mainly to treat Lyme disease. This study was undertaken to identify and compare the components of the essential oils from dried and fresh roots, which are usually applied as medicinal agents, as well as those of the essential oils from dried and fresh leaves, used less frequently. The essential oils from the Dipsacus fullonum leaves and roots were analysed by the GC and GC-MS analysis. 18 components were identified in the essential oil from the fresh leaves, whereas 37 were recognised in the oil from the dried leaves; 10 components were identified in the essential oil from the fresh roots and 40 in that from the dried roots. Phytol was the main component in the essential oil from the leaves, whereas n-hexadecanoic acid was predominant in the roots. The α -amylase inhibition has been proven for methanolic extracts of D. fullonum leaves and roots. The strongest activity was demonstrated by the extract from fresh leaves of D. fullonum and showed an effect about one hundred times weaker than acarbose.

Opis:
The main objective of this study was to provide a method for reducing odor nuisance and checking to what extent the essential oil affects the quality of the mechanical dewatering of municipal sewage sludge. Pine essential oil was used as a substitute of the flocculant in the process of centrifugal sedimentation of sewage sludge. The study was divided into two stages. In the first stage of the research was essential oil from pine needles was produced in the process of steam distillation. In the second part of the research process of mechanical dewatering of municipal sewage sludge on a laboratory sedimentation centrifuge MPW-350 was carried out with the use for this process pine essential oil (produced in the first stage of the study) and flocculant ZETAG® 9048FS. Constant parameters of centrifugal sedimentation were: centrifugation time was t [min.] (assumed centrifugation time t = 1 min.) and centrifuge speed n [1/min.] (assumed n = 2400 1/min.). Independent variable parameters were: dose of flocculant C [ml of flocculant solution /dm3 of sludge] and the dose of essential oil D [cm3 /100 cm3 of sludge]. Based on extensive investigations carried out, it was found that the pine essential oil effectively neutralizes unpleasant odors emitted in the process of mechanical dewatering of municipal sewage sludge during laboratory centrifuge sedimentation. With increasing doses of the pine essential oil time of effective neutralization of unpleasant odors increases, both in the dewatered sludge and effluent. Dose of added flocculant affects the time of effective neutralization of odors by pine essential oil. Together with an increase of flocculant dose, duration of odor neutralization in sludge and effluent decreases. With the increase in the dose of essential oil water content in the sludge decreases. This relationship is maintained for all used concentrations of flocculant dose. With the increase in the dose of essential oil solids concentration in effluent decreases. This relationship is maintained for all used concentrations of flocculant dose. Application of the results of this study requires a technical and economic analysis and determination of the feasibility of the proposed method. This will be the subject of aseparate publication.

In the study, the influence of distillation time as well as distillation apparatus on the chemical composition and quality of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil were investigated. Two different types of distillation apparatuses: Deryng (popular in Poland) and Clevenger-type (recommended by European Pharmacopoeia) were used for the isolation of the essential oil from dried lavender flowers (Lavandulae flos). Moreover, different distillation times (2, 3 and 4 hours) were also applied. The chemical composition of the isolated oils, determined by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS), revealed the dominance of linalool (11.55–17.19%) and linalyl acetate (12.84–16.78%) in the all analyzed samples. Other important constituents were: caryophyllene oxide (5.66–7.35%), lavandulyl acetate (4.64–5.40%) and borneol (4.62–5.51%). On the basis of the obtained data it was proved that the distillation time and distillation apparatus affect the amounts of some constituents in the lavender oil.

Origanum dubium is a valuable wild oregano species of the natural flora of Antalya, Turkey. In this study, we extracted essential oil (EO) by hydro-distillation of the aerial parts of selected O. dubium chemotype with highest EO content, and analyzed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Carvacrol was the primary component (85.9%) among 24 different compounds in the EO. The volatile test showed minimum inhibitory effect of the EO against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. vesicatoria, Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli, Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli var. fuscans, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, at 309, 303, 318, 254, and 901 µL/mL, respectively. A 1-hour treatment of bean and tomato seeds in the volatile phase of the EO effectively sterilized the seeds from bacterial pathogens without inhibiting their germination. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the potential for the use of O. dubium EO as a seed protectant against bean and tomato seed-borne bacterial pathogens.
