Opis:
This paper presents the concept of the emigration region that emerged as a result of wide research identifying the causes of emigration and migration networks, as well as the demographic and socio-economic consequences of significant emigration for particular regions. It is an overview based on long-standing research by the authors and draws heavily on numerous contributions that address the links between regional development and long-term migration outflow. The hypothesis is that an emigration region is formed under the influence of long-term and mass emigration resulting in progressive depopulation and characterised by a set of economic, social and cultural features clearly distinguishing it from regions where such a pattern of relationships is either missing or incidental. Identified features of emigration regions include a well-established tradition of emigration, the long-term nature of emigration, a significant quantitative dimension of emigration, well-developed networks of social relationships between the countries of outflow and inflow, the complex socio-political and economic reasons for emigration and the specific consequences of it, observed both at the individual (micro) level and at the level of local and regional communities (the meso level). The concept of an emigration region is illustrated by the example of the Opolskie Voivodeship (Poland, a NUTS-2 region). The concept of an emigration region emerged as a result of many years of research by the authors, implemented mainly in the Opolskie Voivodeship. The research methods were diverse (including quantitative and qualitative social research) and the research was conducted among the entities involved to varying degrees in broadly understood migration processes (emigrants, re-emigrants, regional and local governments, entrepreneurs).

INDUSTRIAL REGION
EMIGRATION
IMMIGRATION
EARLY GLOBALISATION BEFORE WORLD WAR I
Opis:
In the modern period, Luxembourg used to be one of those countries which traditionally sent out emigrants to various parts of the world (Europe, South and North America). A very high percentage of the population had been leaving the country. As of the 1880s the southern part of the Grand Duchy became a part of an industrial zone covering Lorraine and the Saar Basin where the heavy industry was developed – ore mines, steel mills, iron foundries. At that time the region attracted immigrants from the territory of Luxembourg and, increasingly often, also form other countries – Germany, Italy, France, Belgium. Nevertheless emigration from Luxembourg continued. Thus, at the turn of the century the country which produced a sixth of the worlds pig iron remained a land of emigration. A complete explanation of this paradox requires in-depth studies on the economy of the region. This should lead to answering a more basic question: when and under what circumstances did traditional migrant sending countries start to receive them? This article recalls basic facts and statistical data and presents the tendencies dominant at the time.

Opis:
Local or regional development in the era of globalization has been stimulated by endogenous and exogenous phenomena. It is really difficult to deter-mine which of the very complex and mutual relations are influencing the processes of social and economic development and growth. Normally there is a broad spectrum of causes and consequences of such processes. In the case of marginal region, in this case the region of Mazahua (Mexico) with predominantly Indian population, the situa-tion is even more complicated. It is very important to define and to find those charac-teristics and properties that can stimulate the process of local development.

Opis:
The population of the Kaliningrad Oblast RF mainly consists of immigrants. The region was settled after the Second World War during the existence of the USRR. At the beginning of the nineties of the XX century began contacts with the closest neighbours : Poland, Lithuania which after the declaration of independence turned out to be a foreign country for the citizens of the Kaliningrad Oblast and trips to Germany and Scan-dinavian countries. The positive and permanent change of the decline of the USRR is that the Kaliningrad Oblast is now widely open. As a result the return to the situation from be-fore the year 1991 seems to be impossible and unacceptable for the citizens of Kaliningrad Oblast.

In the article E.G. Etkind’s prose is discussed from the point of view of its place and role in the dissident movement in the Soviet Russia. The particular attention is paid of Etkind’s ideological differences with the political regime and of the Jewish theme which was very important to his selfconsciousness. The article shows how Etkind’s position defined the angle of the narrative in his prose, and especially his view of the events.
