The article presents experiences that result from teaching Polish culture at the Chair of Polish Language at Beijing Foreign Studies University and the author’s idea concerning prac-tical usage of knowledge about Poland during language classes. The author has described methods of teaching Polish culture in Polonistic didactics according to the theory of teach-ing foreign languages and the differences between Polish and Chinese culture. The article consists of four parts: justification of the necessity of introducing information about Poland, an image of the culture in teaching language skills, popularizing knowledge about Poland and recapitulation. This description is of scientific and analytical character.

Although many studies have demonstrated an influence of uniform colors on sports performance, there are still more questions than answers regarding this issue. In our study, participants from Poland (N = 147) and China (N = 143) watched a two-minute video of a semi-professional boxing match. The participants viewed six different versions of the same fight - the original was modified to change the colors of the boxers’ trunks (red vs. blue, blue vs. red, blue vs. black, black vs. blue, red vs. black, and black vs. red). We experimentally confirmed that “black wins” and “red wins” effects exist, but in a way that caused an erroneous perception of the number of blows landed by boxers wearing red and black trunks fighting against boxers in blue trunks. We also showed that both effects are similarly strong even in Chinese culture, where the color red has different connotations from those in Western cultures. Additionally, our results suggest that context might play a very important role in the assessments of the boxers - color only influenced the perception of the weaker boxer. Finally, our findings suggest that the topic of the influence of colors on sports competitions has not been thoroughly investigated and further studies are necessary.

On the job market today, people with a (very) good knowledge of a foreign language, such as German, are in demand. Candidates are required to submit their application documents in this language. Unfortunately, having grammatical correctness and a rich vocabulary are not enough to write a job application and a CV. In order to prepare these documents correctly, it is necessary to know the differences between one’s own and the other culture, in this case the culture of German-speaking countries. The aim of this paper is to present the findings of an exploratory study examining errors students made naming and expressing selected elements of the non-lingual reality that represent a specific kind of reflection of new and often foreign realities in covering letters and CVs. Due to the limited framework of this paper, it is focused on intercultural aspects. While these seem to be very simple, they may cause difficulties because of the characteristic way they are presented in the acquired language, such as the use of courtesy rules, the recording of the date, giving of personal data, writing about foreign languages skills or providing information about a driving licence.

Public spaces are among the most important components of the contemporary city. They are supposed to be places of vibrant social life, where a broad set of activities and behaviours can be observed. However, the role of public spaces as well as their spatial features can differ in various societies. The built environment, as a human creation, is affected by many social factors and one of them is culture. Thus, cultural conditions can have an impact on how urban space is created, perceived, and used. Those differences are most clearly visible in distant cultures, but they may occur to a greater or lesser extent within a single culture circle. Public spaces, because of their accessibility, egalitarianism, and wide range of users are especially useful as an area of research on the relationship between space and culture. This paper presents differences between Glasgow (United Kingdom) and Poznań (Poland) in the perception and attitude towards urban public space concerning cultural conditions. The theoretical background of the relations between space and culture, and the contemporary views of public space are discussed. Afterwards, the results of the survey study conducted in both cities are presented. The research results are discussed in the context of cultural differences derived from the cultural models and show that cultural dimensions can be used to explain the activity of users of urban public spaces. They also indicate that the variety in behaviour patterns and approaches to public space can be observed within the European cultural circle.

This study investigated the effects of family socioeconomic status on children’s academic performance as mediated by their home environment and children’s characteristics, with special attention to gender differences. Structural modeling was applied to a nationally representative Czech Household Panel Survey data (2015/2016). The results revealed that socioeconomic status had no significant direct effects on school performance after controlling for other family aspects. The effects of parental education and income were transmitted by parents’ aspirations for their children, positive parenting, and literacy environment. Home environment, in turn, affected children’s aspirations, general well-being, and interest in books, which directly enhanced children’s school grades. Indeed, children’s characteristics were found to be the strongest predictors of their school performance. The gender analyses showed that the effects of parental characteristics were directly related to boys’ achievement; however, for girls, the effects of parental characteristics operated indirectly through girls’ aspirations, well-being, and interest in books.

Cultural differences between Western and Eastern civilizations are noticeable in the system of professed values and in many aspects of life. This also applies to the approach to captives, which was clearly demonstrated by the events of the first years after the end of World War II. An example could be the way in which former Japanese and German soldiers, who were captured after the end of the war, were treated after their return to homeland. This article aims to show the sources of these differences and, to a lesser extent, examples of behaviors which they caused. The analysis consists of references to historical, economic, social, religious, and psychological conditions, which, as intertwined, resulted in the emergence of different perceptions of an individual’s role in a society and his obligations toward the community. These conditions determined the specific attitudes of representatives of each culture in difficult war and post-war circumstances. Explaining the Japanese soldiers’ willingness to sacrifice and the importance of honor for them, reference was made to the influences of Confucianism, Buddhism, Shinto, and the bushido tradition. Showing the deeply rooted reasons for the attitudes described in the article was therefore supposed to enable their explanation.
Культурные различия между цивилизациями Востока и Запада заметны в системе декларируемых ценностей и во многих аспектах повседневной жизни. Это касается и подхода к плену, что наглядно продемонстрировали события первых лет после окончания Второй мировой войны. Примером этого может служить обращение с бывшими солдатами японской и немецкой армий, попавшими в плен после окончания войны, после их возвращения на родину. Поэтому цель данной статьи – показать источники этих различий и, в меньшей степени, примеры поведения, вызванного ими. Анализ, проведенный в тексте, заключался в ссылке на исторические, экономические, социальные, религиозные или психологические условия, которые, взаимопроникая друг друга, привели к возникновению разного восприятия роли человека в обществе и его обязательств перед обществом. Эти условия определили особенности отношения представителей каждой культуры в сложных военных и послевоенных условиях. Объясняя готовность приносить в жертву солдат японской армии и важность чести для них, была сделана ссылка на влияние конфуцианства, буддизма, синтоизма и традиции бусидо. Следовательно, показ глубоко укоренившихся причин отношения, описанного в статье, должен был дать возможность их объяснения.

Kraje i regiony świata różnią się między sobą nie tylko dostrzegalną gołym okiem kulturą materialną i obyczajową, ale także zakorzenionymi w historii takimi elementami, jak: poczucie tożsamości, instytucje oraz wartości. Elementy tożsamości (język, religia) oraz sfera instytucji (prawo, organizacje, ustawy) są dla osób z zewnątrz (obcych) dostrzegalne, natomiast wartości są podstawą dysonansów na tle kulturowym. Dla osób nieświadomych różnic kulturowych kontakt z osobami pochodzącymi z innych krajów może być nie tylko źródłem satysfakcji, lecz także niezadowolenia, rozgoryczenia, a w skrajnym przypadku – szoku kulturowego. Jednym ze sposobów na uniknięcie zakłóceń w sferze sprawności międzykulturowej komunikacji interpersonalnej jest wypracowanie umiejętności rozpoznawania wymiarów kultury oraz praktycznego rozwiązywania problemów poprzez godzenie ze sobą odmiennych wartości kulturowych, które dotyczą wzajemnych relacji, form komunikacji czy formalności. Celem artykułu jest przekazanie wiedzy na temat różnic kulturowych między Polską a Ukrainą w aspekcie teorii wymiarów kultury. Znajomość tych różnic powinna się przyczynić do niwelowania ewentualnych barier, które najczęściej wynikają z generalizowania i stereotypizacji. Niniejsze opracowanie wpisuje się w naukowy dyskurs podejmowany w literaturze na temat wielokulturowości oraz różnic kulturowych. Temat jest aktualny w obecnej sytuacji napływu społeczności ukraińskiej do naszego kraju. W badaniach zastosowano niereaktywną metodę krytyczną analizy literatury oraz metodę jakościową, na którą składały się wywiady kierowane dotyczące preferencji oraz zachowań ukraińskiej młodzieży. Badania jakościowe przeprowadzono jeszcze przed wybuchem pandemii COVID-19 oraz wojny na Ukrainie, podczas wielokrotnych pobytów naukowo-dydaktycznych autorów razem i osobno na Ukrainie, w tym także w ramach umowy o współpracy naukowo-badawczej i dydaktycznej, podpisanej na podstawie pozytywnej opinii Senackiej Komisji ds. Współpracy Międzynarodowej między Uniwersytetem Ekonomicznym w Katowicach a Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University. Współautorka artykułu jest opiekunem tej współpracy.
Countries and regions across the globe exhibit disparities not only in their sensate, material and moral cultures, readily discernible to observers, but also in historically embedded elements such as institutions, values, and collective identity. Components of identity, including language and religion, as well as institutional frameworks encompassing legal systems, organizational structures, and legislative frameworks, are conspicuous to outsiders, whereas values serve as the foundation for cultural discrepancies. For individuals unaware of cultural differences, contact with people from other countries can result not only in satisfaction but also in frustration, bitterness, and, in extreme cases, culture shock. One strategy to mitigate disruptions in intercultural interpersonal communication efficiency involves cultivating the ability to recognize cultural dimensions and practically addressing issues, by reconciling divergent cultural values pertinent to interpersonal relations, communication styles, or formal protocols. The objective of this article is to elucidate cultural variances between Poland and Ukraine and to cultivate competencies in effectively dismantling communication barriers, often stemming from stereotypes and ethnocentrism. This study contributes to the scholarly discourse on multiculturalism and cultural differences, undertaken in literature, with particular relevance amidst the influx of Ukrainian nationals into our country. The research employs desk research and qualitative methods, including targeted interviews on the preferences and behaviors of Ukrainian youth. Qualitative inquiry was conducted, prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine, during the authors’ multiple scholarly and educational visits to Ukraine. These visits were facilitated by a collaborative agreement on scientific research and teaching cooperation, established between the University of Economics in Katowice and Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University, endorsed by the Senate Committee for International Cooperation on January 28, 2019. The co-author of this article oversees this collaborative initiative (2018, 2019, January 2020).

Organisational culture has been studied by researchers for decades. Their avid interest in this issue is primarily related to its considerable impact on various areas of organisational life and on a company’s relations with its environment. The importance of organisational culture is of particular relevance in multicultural work environments, in which managers’ daily work consists in dealing with employees from various national cultures and with multicultural teams pursuing a company’s goals. Organisational culture is directed at eliminating organisational behavioural ambiguity and promoting employees’ pro-effective behaviours, which seems particularly pertinent in case of a culturally diverse workforce. In the theoretical part of the article, the Authors define the term organisational culture, discuss the functions of this culture, and present the Cameron and Quinn competing values model, while in the research part, they describe the methodology of the study, report the results of the interviews, and draw the conclusions. The Authors conducted the interviews analysed in the article with the Polish, Spanish and Portuguese managers in 2022. The analysis of both the literature and the results of the study allowed them to demonstrate the importance of organisational culture in contemporary management, especially in the context of managing people in multicultural work environments.
Problematyka kultury organizacyjnej jest analizowana i badana przez naukowców od dekad. Duże zainteresowanie kulturą organizacyjną ma przede wszystkim związek z jej odziaływaniem na różne obszary życia organizacyjnego, a także relacje z otoczeniem. Znaczenie kultury organizacyjnej jest szczególnie ważne w wielokulturowym środowisku pracy, gdzie w codziennej pracy menedżerowie zarządzają pracownikami, którzy pochodzą z różnych kultur narodowych i funkcjonują w wielokulturowych zespołach, realizując cele firmy. Kultura organizacyjna służy przede wszystkim eliminowaniu organizacyjnej dwuznaczności zachowań i promuje proefektywne zachowania pracowników firmy, co w przypadku zróżnicowanych kulturowo pracowników jest szczególnie ważne. W artykule w części teoretycznej opisano termin kultura organizacyjna, przedstawiono funkcje kultury i model wartości konkurujących Camerona/Quinna. W części badawczej opisano metodologię, wyniki przeprowadzonych wywiadów oraz wnioski wynikające z badań. Wywiady analizowane w artykule zostały przeprowadzone przez autorki artykułu w roku 2022 wśród polskich, hiszpańskich i portugalskich menedżerów. Analiza literatury oraz wyniki badań pozwoliły na wykazanie istotnego znaczenia kultury organizacyjnej we współczesnym zarządzaniu, szczególnie w kontekście zarządzania ludźmi w wielokulturowym środowisku pracy.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na znaczenie czynników podmiotowych - indywidualnych oraz wskazanie ich wpływu na kształtowanie kultury bezpieczeństwa w przedsiębiorstwach wydobywczych. W tym kontekście podkreślono rolę różnic indywidualnych związanych przede wszystkim z temperamentalnymi uwarunkowaniami zachowań probezpiecznych. W artykule omówiono także zagadnienia dotyczące wybranych aspektów psychologii różnic indywidualnych, problematykę bezpieczeństwa z uwzględnieniem definicji kultury i klimatu bezpieczeństwa, złożonych relacji pomiędzy charakterystycznymi cechami temperamentu a podejmowaniem zachowań probezpiecznych lub ryzykownych przez pracowników. W końcowej części artykułu zostały przedstawione praktyczne wskazówki, które można zaimplementować w przedsiębiorstwach wydobywczych.
This paper highlights the significance of individual subject-related factors and indicates their impact on the development of the safety culture in mining enterprises. The role of individual differences related mainly to pro-safety behaviours driven by individuals’ tempers was emphasized in this context. The paper also addresses the issues pertaining to the selected aspects of the psychology of individual differences, the safety problems including the definition of the safety culture and climate, complex relations between characteristic features of a temper and undertaking pro-safety behaviours vs. the risky ones by employees. The final section presents practical guidelines that may be implemented in mining enterprises.

Artykuł jest poświęcony problematyce wzrostu transnarodowych korporacji w kontekście globalizacji. Kultura organizacyjna przedsiębiorstw zagranicznych pozostaje często w opozycji do systemu wartości powszechnego wśród pracowników danego kraju. Stopień internacjonalizacji firm jest powiązany z wysokością zaangażowania kapitałowego, formą prawną filii lub spółek, z poziomem autonomii poszczególnych oddziałów. Metody komunikacji pomiędzy centralą a filiami, narodowe uwarunkowania wpływające na sposób zarządzania wymagają analizy w celu wykorzystania potencjału tkwiącego w zasobach materialnych i ludzkich. Można zaobserwować znamienną ewolucję – w chwili obecnej struktura sieci zastępuje dawne związki oparte na hierarchii w relacjach pomiędzy centralą a filiami.
The article is devoted to the problem of growth of transnational corporations in the context of globalization. As the cited literature points out the corporate culture is frequently in opposition with system of values shared by workers in subsidiaries in foreign countries. The phase of internationalization is linked to the investment degree, to the relative autonomy of offshoots. The article deals with the subject of organizational culture in multinational context, with the dissimilarities in management explained by national conditioning as well as it defines the relations between the central and the subsidiaries. The goal is to determine the model of communication where the the differences will be considered as an asset helping the development of entire enterprise in global dimension and where the performant network will replace the ancient hierarchy.

Ethical and methodologically correct diagnosis of a hearing child of Deaf parents requires a specialist with extensive knowledge. In every society there are people who use the visual-spatial language – they are deaf people. They are perceived by the majority as disabled people, less frequently as a cultural minority. The adoption of a particular attitude towards the perception of deafness determines the context of the psychologist’s assessment. Diagnosis in such a specific situation should be viewed from the perspective of a child hearing as a bi-cultural person, a descendant of a Deaf parent – a representative of the Deaf culture and himself a psychol-gist representing the cultural majority of hearing people.

W artykule zwrócono uwagę na socjologiczny kontekst stworzenia jednej z najbardziej znanych postaci rysunkowych – Gala Asterixa. Przedstawiono pochodzenie jego autorów oraz ich prace, będące wyrazem ich drogi życiowej, podejmowanych decyzji oraz światopoglądu. Ważne znaczenie ma tutaj zagadnienie migracji oraz nawiązywania do własnych losów. Losy twórcy Asterixa są zatem pewnego rodzaju przykładem na bogactwo i złożoność kultur, które finalnie mogą przynieść bardzo dobre rezultaty w tworzeniu dzieł uniwersalnych, zrozumiałych dla każdego i cieszących się wielką popularnością. Gal Asterix jest wykreowaną postacią, która odniosła sukces w kulturze masowej, zatem niezwykle ważne są próby wyjaśnienia jej fenomenu, właśnie poprzez analizę życia i relacji społecznych jego twórcy.
The article highlights the sociological context of creating one of the most famous cartoon characters – Asterix the Gaul. The authors’ origins and their creative works are presented, embodying their life path, decisions and worldview. The issue of migration and relating to one’s own biographical fate is of great importance here. The fate of the creator of Asterix is therefore a kind of example of the richness and complexity of cultures that can ultimately bring very good results in creating universal works, understandable to everyone and enjoying great popularity. Asterix the Gaul is an invented character who has been successful in mass culture, so it is extremely important to try to explain its phenomenon by analyzing the life and social relations of its creator.

Opis:
Celem pracy jest omówienie zjawiska lojalności konsumentów w odniesieniu do serwisów e-commerce. Lojalność e-konsumentów omówiona została w kontekście różnic kulturowych, które mają wpływ na satysfakcję oraz zaufanie konsumentów, a tym samym determinują ich postawy lojalnościowe. W pracy odwołano się do prezentowanych w literaturze wyników badań definiujących czynniki wpływające na lojalność e-konsumentów. W szczególny sposób uwzględniony został wpływ kultury na zachowania konsumentów i ich postawy lojalnościowe. Na tej podstawie usystematyzowano czynniki determinujące ich lojalność ze względu na reprezentowane przez nich wymiary kultury narodowej. W wymiarze praktycznym wyniki analizy pozwalają na optymalny wybór parametrów serwisu e-commerce dedykowanego klientom pochodzącym z określonego kręgu kulturowego, co pozwala na jego optymalne dostosowanie do ich uwarunkowanych kulturowo preferencji. W aspekcie społecznym w pracy podkreślono znaczenie różnic kulturowych warunkujących zachowania europejskich konsumentów. Artykuł ma charakter koncepcyjny.
An aim of the work is to discuss the phenomenon of consumer loyalty towards e-commerce services. Loyalty of e-consumers is discussed in the context of cultural differences which affect consumers’ satisfaction and confidence, thus determining their loyalty attitudes. In her work, the author referred to the presented in literature research findings defining the factors affecting e-consumers’ loyalty. Particularly there is considered the impact of culture on consumers’ behaviours and their loyalty attitudes. Based on this, the author systematised the factors determining their loyalty in view of the represented by them dimensions of national culture. In practical terms, the analysis findings allow for optimal choice of the parameters of e-commerce service dedicated to clients originating from a definite cultural area, what allows its optimal adjustment to their culturally determined preferences. In the social aspect, the author in her study emphasised the importance of cultural differences determining behaviours of European consumers. The article is of the conceptual nature.
Цель работы – обсудить явление лояльности потребителей по отношению к сервисам e-commerce. Лояльность э-потребителей обсудили в контексте культурных отличий, которые оказывают влияние на удовлетворение и дове- рие потребителей, тем самым определяя их отношение к лояльности. В работе делается ссылка на представляемые в литературе результаты исследований, определяющих факторы, влияющие на лояльность э-потребителей. Особенно приняли во внимание влияние культуры на поведение потребителей и их отношение к лояльности. На этой основе провели систематизацию факторов, определяющих их лояльность в силу представляемых ими измерений нацио- нальной культуры. В практическом измерении результаты анализа позволяют оптимальный выбор параметров сервиса e-commerce, предлагаемого клиентам, происходящим из определенной культурной среды, что позволяет опти- мальное его приспособление к их предпочтениям, обусловленным культурой. В социальном аспекте в работе подчеркнули значение культурных отличий, обусловливающих поведение европейских потребителей. Статья имеет кон- цептуальный характер.

The paper refers to this trend of hermeneutics, whose representatives understand the interpretation as "articulated understanding". The texting, including paraphrase, the translation of someone else's language, is a prerequisite for the existence of cultural space, so that a critical view and cognitive verification of another narrative is possible. In the case of Maciej Zaremba, we are dealing with a reporter who writes Swedish about Swedes as an outsider, that is – keeping the distance and ability to see what the Swedes do not want or cannot see with their own eyes. It explores the areas of action of the "Swedish norm", visible from the outside, invisible "from the inside", just as the recognition of otherness and a peculiar value of some culture is possible for foreigners. Natives themselves are not able to recognize their standards (also assess) without the participation of outsiders. For Zaremba, writing is an act of disagreement with the uncritical acceptance of otherness, while using critical negation language and analytical tools with a more conceited intention than an overtly damning one. In this new incarnation, the author himself calls himself a "translator between cultures", whose strength lies in the fact that he has retained the ability to marvel, to expand his imagination and to seek new language means, to clearly separate facts from opinions. It is a vision of a man building a bridge between two cultures, and his ideal is subjects of resistance and non-toxic communication standards are his ideal.
Referat nawiązuje do tego nurtu hermeneutyki, którego reprezentanci pojmują interpretację jako „zrozumienie wyartykułowane”. Utekstowienie, w tym także parafraza, przekład cudzego języka, jest warunkiem zaistnienia w przestrzeni kulturowej, dzięki czemu możliwy jest krytyczny ogląd i poznawcza weryfikacja innej narracji. W wypadku Macieja Zaremby mamy do czynienia z reportażystą, który pisze po szwedzku o Szwedach jako outsider, to znaczy – zachowując dystans i zdolność widzenia tego, czego Szwedzi nie chcą albo nie mogą zobaczyć własnymi oczyma. Odkrywa obszary działania „normy szwedzkiej”, widzialnej od zewnątrz, niewidocznej „od wewnątrz”, tak jak rozpoznanie inności i swoistej wartości jakieś kultury możliwe jest dla obcokrajowców. Tubylcy sami swoich norm rozpoznać (także ocenić) nie są w stanie bez udziału innoziemców. Pisanie dla Zaremby jest aktem niezgody na bezrefleksyjną akceptację inności, jednocześnie używa języka krytycznej negacji i narzędzi analitycznych z intencją bardziej koncyliacyjną niż jawnie potępiającą. W tym nowym wcieleniu sam autor nazywa się „tłumaczem między kulturami”, którego siła polega na tym, że zachował zdolność do dziwienia się, poszerzania wyobraźni i poszukiwania nowych środków językowych, do wyrazistego oddzielania faktów od opinii. Jest to wizja człowieka budującego pomost między dwoma kulturami, a jego ideałem są tematy stawiające opór i nietoksyczne standardy komunikacyjne.

Poprawna etycznie i metodologicznie diagnoza dziecka słyszącego rodziców Głuchych wymaga od specjalisty szerokiej wiedzy. W każdym społeczeństwie funkcjonują osoby posługujące się językiem wizualno-przestrzennym – są to osoby niesłyszące. Przez większość są spostrzegane jako osoby niepełnosprawne, rzadziej jako mniejszość kulturowa. Przyjęcie określonej postawy wobec postrzegania zjawiska głuchoty determinuje kontekst prowadzonej przez psychologa oceny. Na diagnozę w tak specyficznej sytuacji należy spojrzeć z perspektywy dziecka słyszącego jako osoby dwukulturowej, potomka rodzica Głuchego1) – przedstawiciela kultury Głuchych oraz siebie samego jako psychologa reprezentujących większość kulturową osób słyszących.
