Opis:
This paper deals with the maintenance cost of deteriorating systems. Two maintenance strategies are studied: age-replacement and condition-based maintenance. To compare these two policies, degradation models are used: these models characterize the degradation level but also the system time-to-failure. In order to compute the optimal condition-based maintenance cost, we suppose that the main influencing sources are the preventive threshold, the inspection frequency and the inspection cost. Numerical examples illustrate the maintenance cost computation and compare the optimal costs of both policies.

Opis:
Predictive maintenance is very important for effective prevention of failures in an industry. The present paper describes a case study where a wood chip pump system was analyzed, and a predictive model was proposed. An Ishikawa diagram and FMECA are used to identify possible causes for system failure. The Chip Wood has several sensors installed to monitor the working conditions and system state. The authors propose a variation of exponential smoothing technique for short time forecasting and an artificial neural network for long time forecasting. The algorithms were integrated into a dashboard for online condition monitoring, where the users are alerted when a variable is determined or predicted to get out of the expected range. Experimental results show prediction errors in general less than 10 %. The proposed technique may be of help in monitoring and maintenance of the asset, aiming at greater availability.

One of the most important subsystems of the vehicles and machines operating currently in industry and transportation are the rotating subsystems. During the operation, due to the forcing factors influence, the technical state of them is changing and the failure can occur. Fault diagnosis is maintenance task considered as an essential in such subsystems, since possibility of an early detection and diagnosis of the faulty condition can save both time and money. To do this the analysis of the subsystems vibrations is performed. The identified technical state should be considered in a context of the ability and different inability states. Therefore, the first step of the diagnostic procedure is the ability and different inability states identification. Traditional data-driven techniques of fault diagnosis require signal processing for feature extraction, as they are unable to work with raw signal data, consequently leading to need for both expert knowledge and human work. The emergence of deep learning architectures in condition-based maintenance promises to ensure high performance fault diagnosis while lowering necessity for expert knowledge and human work. This article presents authors initial research in deep learning-based data-driven fault diagnosis of rotating subsystems. The proposed technique input raw three-axis accelerometer signal as high-definition image into deep learning layers, which automatically extract signal features, enabling high classification accuracy.

The detection of transformer winding deformation caused by short-circuit current is of great significance to the realization of condition based maintenance. Considering the influence of environment and measurement errors, an online deformation detection method is proposed based on the analysis of leakage inductance changes. First, the operation expressions are derived on the basis of the equivalent circuit and the leakage inductance parameters are identified by the partial least squares regression algorithm. Second, the amount of the leakage inductance samples in a detection time window is determined using the Monte Carlo simulation thought, and then the samples in the confidence interval are obtained. Last, a criteria is built by the mean value changes of the leakage inductance samples and the winding deformation is detected. The online detection method considers the random fluctuation characteristics of the leakage inductance samples, adjust the threshold value automatically, and can quantify the change range to assess the severity. Based on the field data, the distribution of the leakage inductance samples is analyzed to obey the normal function approximately. Three deformation experiments are done by different sub-winding connections and the detection results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

The accurate assessment of aircraft structure damage risk is the premise of establishing reasonable, economic and reliable maintenance intervals. While many studies have proposed damage risk assessment methods for aircraft structures, these methods lack the quantification of risk. This paper proposed a risk assessment method of aircraft structure damage maintenance interval considering fatigue crack growth rate and crack detection rate. The damage process of aircraft structure was simulated by Monte Carlo simulation to realize the quantitative assessment of aircraft structure damage risk and maintenance interval. Taking an aircraft fleet as an example, the damage risk of its wing structure was simulated and analyzed. The results show that if the risk is controlled within a reasonable range, the maintenance interval should be shortened to 16 flight hours. At the same time, through the analysis of the risk classification standard and the crack detection rate, the quantitative evaluation of the risk classification standard was realized.

This paper deals with a condition-based maintenance strategy (CBM) in finite-time horizon for a system subject to two different causes of failure, internal degradation and sudden shocks. Internal degradation is modelled under a gamma process and sudden shocks arrive at the system following a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Both causes of failure are considered as dependent. When a sudden shock takes places, the system fails. In addition, the system is regarded to fail when the deterioration level reaches a critical threshold. Under this functioning scheme, a CBM strategy is developed for controlling the reliability of the system. Traditionally, this strategy is developed under an asymptotic approach. Hence, considering an infinite-time horizon is not always possible. In this paper, we analyse a CBM strategy under a finite-time horizon developing a recursive method which estimates the expected cost rate based on numerical integration and Monte Carlo simulation. A numerical example is provided in order to illustrate this complex maintenance model.

Constant changes in the operating strategy of marine diesel engines are observed. They refer to whole engine and different functional systems of the engine in different range. The paper presents changes in marine diesel engines operating strategy. Gradual transition from simple failure response operating strategy - Corrective Maintenance (CM) to a reliability-oriented strategy - Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) has been described together with some remarks about Planed Maintenance (PM) systems and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) systems with their latest form called CBM+. Some information about changes in diesel engines operating strategy in the Polish Navy (PN) at the turn of the last 35 years is also presented. An attempt to build engine analyzer for high-speed diesel engines at the Polish Naval Academy (PNA) in order to improve submarine diesel engines operating strategy is also described in the paper.

Większość badań nad optymalizacją utrzymania systemów wieloskładnikowych bierze pod uwagę jedynie rozkład czasu życia elementów składowych. Kiedy przyjmie się dla systemów wieloskładnikowych strategię utrzymania urządzeń zależną od ich bieżącego stanu technicznego (condition-based maintenance, CBM), struktura strategii staje się złożona w związku z dużą liczbą stanów składowych oraz ich kombinacji. W konsekwencji, często przyjmuje się pewne z góry ustalone struktury strategii utrzymania przed optymalizacją utrzymania systemu wieloskładnikowego w kontekście CBM. Opracowanie takich z góry ustalonych struktur strategii wymaga jednak specjalistycznego doświadczenia, a i tak brak dowodów na optymalność tych strategii. W artykule zaproponowano metodę optymalizacji utrzymania szeregowego systemu dwuskładnikowego, która nie wymaga wcześniej ustalonej struktury strategii. Proponowaną metodę opracowano na podstawie semimarkowskiego procesu decyzyjnego (SMDP). Badanie symulacyjne pokazało, że za pomocą proponowanej metody można ustalać optymalną strategię utrzymania w sposób adaptacyjny dla różnych kosztów utrzymania oraz parametrów procesów degradacyjnych. Za pomocą symulacji badano także optymalną strukturę strategii utrzymania, jako punkt odniesienia dla przyszłych studiów nad optymalizacją systemów wieloskładnikowych.
Most existing research on maintenance optimisation for multi-component systems only considers the lifetime distribution of the components. When the condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategy is adopted for multi-component systems, the strategy structure becomes complex due to the large number of component states and their combinations. Consequently, some predetermined maintenance strategy structures are often assumed before the maintenance optimisation of a multicomponent system in a CBM context. Developing these predetermined strategy structure needs expert experience and the optimality of these strategies is often not proofed. This paper proposed a maintenance optimisation method that does not require any predetermined strategy structure for a two-component series system. The proposed method is developed based on the semi-Markov decision process (SMDP). A simulation study shows that the proposed method can identify the optimal maintenance strategy adaptively for different maintenance costs and parameters of degradation processes. The optimal maintenance strategy structure is also investigated in the simulation study, which provides reference for further research in maintenance optimisation of multi-component systems.

The article proposes an approach based on deep and machine learning models to predict a component failure as an enhancement of condition based maintenance scheme of a turbofan engine and reviews currently used prognostics approaches in the aviation industry. Component degradation scale representing its life consumption is proposed and such collected condition data are combined with engines sensors and environmental data. With use of data manipulation techniques, a framework for models training is created and models' hyperparameters obtained through Bayesian optimization. Models predict the continuous variable representing condition based on the input. Best performed model is identified by detemining its score on the holdout set. Deep learning models achieved 0.71 MSE score (ensemble meta-model of neural networks) and outperformed significantly machine learning models with their best score at 1.75. The deep learning models shown their feasibility to predict the component condition within less than 1 unit of the error in the rank scale.

This paper proposes a condition-based maintenance policy for the two-phase Wiener degradation process components. The main contribution of this article is to provide the time distribution of degradation failures for the two-phase Wiener process degradationcomponent, as well as the modeling and solving methods for two-phase maintenance. The two-phase maintenance policy includes two-phase inspection and preventive replacement maintenance operations. The established optimization maintenance policy model aims to minimize long-term operation costs. The specific cost calculation equation and the solution method of the maintenance model are given. The feasibility of the maintenance policy model is verified using the two-phase degradation data of the Liquid Coupling Devices. The Particle swarm optimization algorithm can stably solve the described problem, and the results show that the two-phase maintenance policy can be more economical and improve components availability. After that, we also analyzed the impact of the cost parameters on the maintenance policy through sensitivity analysis.

W pracy przedstawiono własne, wdrożone rozwiązanie problemu automatyzacji sterowania i nadzorowania procesu wytwarzania sprężonego powietrza na potrzeby średniej wielkości systemu produkcyjnego. Opracowane rozwiązanie jest zgodne z podejściem Condition-Based Maintenance. Jego istotą było zintegrowanie funkcji sterowania bezpośredniego oraz nadzorowania przebiegu procesu w celu zapewnienia możliwie najlepszych warunków pracy maszyn i wydłużenia przez to okresu ich eksploatacji. Wdrożenie opisanego rozwiązania pozwoliło na: wyeliminowanie konieczności przebywania ludzi w środowisku o bardzo dużym poziomie hałasu, poprawę jakości procesu poprzez ustabilizowanie przebiegu jego podstawowych charakterystyk (zmiennych), zautomatyzowanie procedur obsługi sytuacji awaryjnych, zwiększenie niezawodności maszyn poprzez ich racjonalne wykorzystanie i zapewnienie prawidłowych warunków pracy, oraz dokumentowanie przebiegu procesu. Uwolnienie operatora od zadań sterowania i wyposażenie go w narzędzia wspomagające diagnostykę procesu spowodowały, że był on w stanie wcześniej wykryć zagrożenia dla przebiegu procesu (potencjalne awarie) i podjąć stosowne działania zaradcze.
The paper presents the original solution of the control and monitoring system of the compressed air production plant. The plant was supplying the mid–size production system. The developed solution is consistent with the Condition–Based Maintenance approach. Its aim was to integrate the functions of direct control and monitoring of the process to ensure the best possible working conditions of machines (compressors) and to extend the period of their operation. The implementation of the described solution allowed: to eliminate the need for human presence in an environment with very high levels of noise, to improve the quality of the process by stabilising the course of its basic characteristics (variables), to automate the handling of alarm conditions, to increase machines' reliability through their rational use and ensuring proper working conditions, and to document the process. Freeing the operator from the common, repetitive control tasks and equipping him with diagnostic tools enabled him to detect threats (potential failures) sooner and to undertake appropriate corrective actions.

System health diagnosis serves as an underpinning enabler for enhanced safety and optimized maintenance tasks in complex assets. In the past four decades, a wide-range of diagnostic methods have been proposed, focusing either on system or component level. Currently, one of the most quickly emerging concepts within the diagnostic community is system level diagnostics. This approach targets in accurately detecting faults and suggesting to the maintainers a component to be replaced in order to restore the system to a healthy state. System level diagnostics is of great value to complex systems whose downtime due to faults is expensive. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of the most recent diagnostics approaches applied to hardware systems. The main objective of this paper is to introduce the concept of system level diagnostics and review and evaluate the collated approaches. In order to achieve this, a comprehensive review of the most recent diagnostic methods implemented for hardware systems or components is conducted, highlighting merits and shortfalls.

Merchant shipping has undergone a great transformation over the past three decades. The shipping market is highly competitive, which coupled with high crewing and fuel costs, leads to high operational costs. One of the paramount factor involved in vessel operation is the Maintenance cost and there is a dire need to keep this cost to a minimum. Fortunately the earlier policy of repair only maintenance in commercial shipping has been done away with, and was replaced by the policy of preventive maintenance. Planned Maintenance System was introduced by ship management companies in the early 90’s. Planned Maintenance offered benefits over the repair only policy, but has its own demerits. Many a time machinery equipment is opened up for routine maintenance after a specified time interval, irrespective of the need. This could lead to potential failures, which is explained by the fact that preventive maintenance resulted in meddling of a well set piece of machinery equipment, leading to its subsequent failure. This is where Condition based maintenance or CBM steps into prominence. CBM monitors the health of the machinery equipment, analyses the condition and helps you in decision making. The Main Propulsion system forms the heart of a vessel and we need to ensure its reliability, together with the reliability of its associated sub-systems. The entire system can be represented by reliability block diagrams, to show the interdependence of various components comprising the system. This helps in the decision making process of CBM whereby ship’s engineer may decide to stop the running machinery equipment, open and overhaul the same, else postpone the overhaul for a later safe date.

Opis:
This paper describes various analysis used for technical condition diagnostics of electric motors used as pump drivers and oriented on recognition of broken rotor bars. There are discussed two case studies. The 1st one is dedicated to a motor driving a barrel pump operating as a water cutting pump on delayed cooking unit. The 2nd study considers an aggregate monitored by an anomaly detecting system.
W artykule omówiono wykorzystanie różnego typu analiz dla diagnostyki silników elektrycznych wykorzystywanych do napędów pomp i zorientowanych na pęknięcia prętów wirnika. Pokazano dwa przykłady analiz. Pierwszy z nich dotyczy silnika napędzającego krytyczną pompę garnkową na instalacji opóźnionego koksowania, drugi natomiast dotyczy agregatu nadzorowanego z pomocą sprzętowego systemu detekcji anomalii.
