Regenerative braking is a technique that employs electric motors to convert the dynamic mechanical energy from the motor’s spinning rotor and any attached loads into electricity. However, such a type of regenerative braking can only slow but not stop the vehicle because there is too little energy to excite the motor acting as a generator at low speeds. Therefore, this paper presents a unique flywheel-based regenerative braking system for railway vehicles. This system is supposed to meet high safety and comfort expectations in all operating conditions. The braking action control of this system should allow braking of empty or loaded vehicles according to load, the anti-blockage braking action of wheels and prevent wheel-slide during braking or wheel slip during acceleration. The new regenerative braking system under development, like any kinetic energy recovery system, requires the application of continuously variable transmission. The essence of the new solution is to design and build this type of variable transmission using only one planetary gear controlled through the powertrain control module for an electric motor cooperating concurrently. This paper describes complete modelling and simulation realisation on a closed-loop servomotor drive, which cooperates with the variable transmission of the regenerative braking system based on the Scilab/Xcos environment.

The article is devoted to the description of practical experience in testing the alternating current electric machines. The results of combining thecapabilities of digital systems for collecting and processing information with a powerful electromechanical system are presented. Itis the combination of two systems of different purposes that enables creating the state-of-the art diagnostic installations combined into one electro-mechatronic system. Practical results of electric machine tests contain clear explanations of fundamental principles and provide acomprehensive assessment of the conditionof electric machines. They use methods of direct charging the electric machines with the possibility of recuperation of electric energy during tests. Thermal state of electrical machine nodes is monitoredusing the thermal forecasting technologies. Both the methods for various types of tests and means for their implementation are described in detail. This article is intended for engineers involved in designing, manufacturing and testing the electric machines.

The authors of this manuscript present the development of a braking system with friction material baseWC-Cu coating for the electric vehicle. This manuscript follows on from the original development of an AGV multi-disc braking system and an experimental investigation of the friction factor of WC-Cu coatings. In addition to developing the mechanical elements and construction of the electric vehicle, the tribological parameters of three samples of the steel substrate, the C45 with WC-Cu coating, were investigated in the tribological laboratory. A metallic coating of the WC-Cu base was applied on theC45 steel substrate using electro-spark deposition coating technology. The experiment used three samples with different percentage ratios of chemical elements in the coating structure. The tribometer working on a “Ball on Plate” principle was an investigation of the friction factor of all samples duringthe experiment. Subsequently, the surface of the samples was modified structure WC-Cu with laser technology. The microhardness of modified and unmodified coatings according to the Vickers methodology was investigated in the next stage. At the end of the experimental investigation, a braking simulation was created in the programming environment of the Matlab® software, considering all driving resistances. The researchers also focused on the simulation of heat conduction during braking for some considered driving modes with braking on a level and with a 20% slope roadway. The simulation of heat flow was carried out in the Matlab® programming environment using the Fourier partial differential equation for non-stationary heat conduction.

Aiming at the problems of the negative sequence governance and regenerative braking energy utilization of electrified railways a layered compensation optimization strategy considering the power flow of energy storage systems was proposed based on the railway power conditioner. The paper introduces the topology of the energy storage type railway power conditioner and analyzes its negative sequence compensation and regenerative braking energy utilization mechanism considering the influence of equipment capacity and power flow of the energy storage system on railway power conditioner compensation effect, the objective function and constraint conditions of the layered compensation optimization of the energy storage type railway power conditioner were constructed and the sequential quadratic programming method was used to solve the problem. The feasibility of the proposed strategy is verified by a multicondition simulation test. The results show that the proposed optimization compensation strategy can realize negative sequence compensation and regenerative braking energy utilization, improve the power factor of traction substations when the system equipment capacity is limited and it also has good realtime performance.

Opis:
Weed control is an important issue for environmental protection all around the world. Traditional hand weed control is laborious whereas chemical control is costly and a threat to the atmosphere. A chemical patch weed control system is an optimized system but lacks cheap technical equipment. This research outlines a design process and test of a braking system that can be applied during the designing of an autonomous braking system for a 2017 Yamaha Grizzly 700. The system is intended to be used as an autonomous weed chemical spraying. A bolt-on approach that did not require any manipulation of the stock, an internal braking system was followed to reduce the complexity and installation time of multiple systems. Three different types of autonomous braking system solutions were initially investigated, with the linear actuator solution being decided on through the assistance of a weighted decision matrix. The system was designed around a 30 kg hand force; however, a spare actuator of approximately 20 kg of force was repurposed and used instead. Finite element analysis concluded that all major components within the proposed system were suitable for a lifetime of at least 1,000,000 cycles with a mild steel yield stress failure criterion of 370 MPa. A stationary test for the system was conducted to determine the success of the system, which pushed the brake lever approximately 25% of its disengaged the expectation and could be used to apply the ATV’s brakes autonomously while retracting the gear interlocking mechanism enough to change gears.

W pracy przedstawiono opis oraz metodykę badań układów hamulcowych w pojazdach jednośladowych. Zaprezentowano dokumentację oraz dyrektywę, na bazie której przeprowadzane są badania układów hamulcowych motocykli. Na tej podstawie zapisano definicje trzech głównych rodzajów hamulców poddawanych badaniom. Opisano dwa główne typy badań przeprowadzanych na podstawie Dyrektywy Rady 93/14/EWG z dnia 5 kwietnia 1993 roku w sprawie hamowania dwu- lub trzykołowych pojazdów silnikowych. Wskazano podstawowe warunki, w jakich przeprowadzane są badania typu 0 oraz 1, a także badania z mokrym układem hamulcowym. Opisano budowę stanowiska, które posłużyło do wyznaczenia wartości siły oraz ciśnienia występującego na pojedynczym zacisku hamulcowym obwodu hamulcowego w badanym motocyklu. W dalszej części artykułu przedstawiono metodykę opracowania wyników badań stanowiskowych. Przeanalizowano działanie każdego obwodu hamulcowego oddzielnie. Zaprezentowano wykresy opisujące wyznaczone czasy reakcji dla obydwu obwodów hamowania.
The paper presents a description and methodology of testing brake systems in single-track vehicles. The construction of the stand, which was used to determine the value of force and pressure on a single brake caliper of the brake circuit in the tested motorcycle, was described. The following section presents the methodology of elaborating the results of bench tests. The operation of each circuit was analysed separately. Graphs describing the determined response times for both braking circuits are presented. The obtained results of bench tests show that the average time of activation of the braking system from the moment of applying force to the brake lever to reaching the full value of the braking force is 0.2 seconds.

Heavy agricultural trailers can be equipped with a three-axle chassis with a tandem axle set at the rear and one mounted on a turntable at the front. In such trailers, selection of the distribution of braking forces that meet the requirements of the EU Directive 2015/68, with regard to braking, largely depends on the type of tandem suspension used. The requirements for brake force distribution in agricultural trailers of categories R3 and R4 are described. On this basis, a methodology for calculating the optimal linear distribution of braking forces, characteristic of agricultural trailers with air braking systems, was developed. An analysis of the forces acting on a 24-tonne three-axle trailer during braking was performed for five different suspensions of the rear tandem axle. An optimization algo-rithm using the quasi Monte Carlo method was described, on the basis of which a computer program for selection of the linear distribution of braking forces was developed. The calculations were made for an empty and loaded trailer with and without the weight of the tandem suspension. The most uniform distribution of braking forces was obtained for two leaf spring with dynamic equalization and air suspension, in which the ratio of the braking force of the tandem axle and the total braking force varied between 22.9% and 25.5% for the different calculation variants. A large variation in the braking force distribution was achieved for the two leaf spring suspension, in which the ratio of tandem axle braking force and the total braking force ranged from 2.7% to 6.4% for the leading axle and from 27.8% to 36.2% for the trailing axle. The presented calculation methodology can be used in the initial phase of the design of air braking systems for three-axle agricultural trailers.

Purpose: The aim of the study is to find out whether and to extent the change of selected parameters of the system, such as the type of tires, tire pressure and axle load, changes the result of the technical test of the analysed vehicle in the field of measuring braking forces. Design/methodology/approach: Diagnostic tests, tire pressure measurements, axle load measurements, braking force measurements on a roller device were carried out. Findings: The relationships between the pressure in the tires and the braking force measured on the wheel as well as between the braking force and the load acting on the vehicle axle have been demonstrated. Research limitations/implications: Mathematical relationships between tire pressure and vehicle braking force can be derived in the future. Practical implications: In the course of the tests, it was found that the technical tests made it possible to determine the braking forces only while maintaining the nominal ±1×105 Pa tire pressure. Changes to this parameter may influence the measurement results. Moreover, the influence of tire pressure on the change of the measured braking force values was found, which translates into the safety of the vehicle in road traffic. Układy hamulcowe współczesnych pojazdów samochodowych są systemami technicznymi o rozbudowanej strukturze konstrukcyjnej i funkcjonalnej. Układy te muszą charakteryzować się podstawowym wymaganiem jakim jest szczelność tego systemu. Badanie szczelności rozproszonej konstrukcyjnie zamkniętej przestrzeni roboczej (a taką konstrukcją jest układ hamulcowy pojazdu samochodowego) jest poważnym wyzwaniem dla diagnostyki stanu technicznego tego systemu. W naturalny sposób ujawnia się potrzeba optymalizacji (strukturalizacji) procesu diagnozowania w szczególności jego szczelności. Autor w niniejszym artykule prezentuje podejście do tego zagadnienia w świetle algebry Boole’a. Podejście to przedstawiono na przykładzie samochodowego hydraulicznego układu hamulcowego dwuobwodowego, posiadającego obwód hamowania kół przednich i tylnych.
Braking systems of modern motor vehicles are technical systems with an extensive structural and functional structure. These systems must be characterized by the basic requirement which is the tightness of the system. Testing the tightness of a dispersed constructionally closed working space (and such a structure is the braking system of a motor vehicle) is a serious challenge for the diagnosis of the technical condition of this system. The need to optimize (structurize) the diagnosis process, in particular its tightness, appears naturally. In this article, the author presents an approach to this issue in the light of Boolean algebra. This approach is illustrated by the example of an automotive hydraulic dual circuit braking system having front and rear wheel braking circuits.

This article presents simulation models of trailer air brake systems in configurations without a valve and with a differential valve, thus demonstrating the rationale for using a valve to improve system performance. Simplified mathematical models using the lumped method for systems without and with a differential valve are presented. The proposed valve can have two states of operation depending on the configuration of relevant parameters. These parameters can include the length of the control pipe, the throughput between chambers in the control part of the valve and the forcing rise time. Based on the calculations, it was found that the differential valve with large control pipe lengths can reduce the response time of the actuator by 42.77% relative to the system without the valve. In the case of transition of the valve to the tracking action, this time increases only by 9.93%. A force rise time of 0.5 s causes the transition of the valve from the accelerating action to the tracking action, with 9.23% delay relative to the system without a valve. The calculations can be used in the preliminary assessment of the speed of operation of pneumatic braking systems and in the formulation of guidelines for the construction of a prototypical differential valve. In conclusion, it is suggested to use a mechatronic system enabling smooth adjustment of the flow rate between chambers of the control system of the differential valve.

The article presents the concept of using an artificial neural network to approximate the parameters describing the vehicle braking process, from the point of view of the application of this method in the diagnostics of the braking system. The artificial neural network of non-linear autoregression was used to approximate the dependence of the braking deceleration and the pressure in the braking system. The effectiveness of the neural network was checked depending on the number of neurons in its hidden layer and on the applied learning algorithm. The operation of the neural network was verified based on the actual braking processes of the Skoda Octavia, carried out with different dynamics, with different car weights and different tire inflation pressures. After verifying the neural network, it was used to approximate the braking deceleration values for the pressure values exceeding those present in the input data set. This action allows the analysis of the possibility of the vehicle obtaining a braking deceleration, which qualifies its braking system as efficient. Two concepts of using a neural network to solve this problem were analyzed. Conclusions related to the validity of the development of the discussed methods were drawn.
W artykule przedstawiono koncepcję wykorzystania sztucznej sieci neuronowej do aproksymacji parametrów opisujących proces hamowania pojazdu z punktu widzenia zastosowania tej metody w diagnostyce układu hamulcowego. Do aproksymacji zależności opóźnienia hamowania od ciśnienia w układzie hamulcowym wykorzystano sztuczną sieć neuronową nieliniowej autoregresji. Skuteczność sieci neuronowej sprawdzono w zależności od liczby neuronów w jej warstwie ukrytej oraz zastosowanego algorytmu uczenia. Działanie sieci neuronowej zostało zweryfikowane na podstawie rzeczywistych procesów hamowania Skody Octavii, realizowanych z różną dynamiką, przy różnych masach samochodów i różnych ciśnieniach w oponach. Po weryfikacji sieci neuronowej posłużono się nią do aproksymacji wartości opóźnienia hamowania dla wartości ciśnień przekraczających te występujące w zbiorze danych wejściowych. Działanie to pozwala na analizę możliwości uzyskania przez pojazd opóźnienia hamowania, co kwalifikuje jego układ hamulcowy jako sprawny. Przeanalizowano dwie koncepcje wykorzystania sieci neuronowej do rozwiązania tego problemu. Wyciągnięto wnioski związane z zasadnością rozwoju omawianych metod.

The design dimensions of the executive hydraulic cylinders of the brake system of heavy-duty mining dump trucks cause high fluid flow during the braking process. Therefore, dimensions of the anti-blocking system modulator spool pair require unique electromagnets or hydraulic amplifiers to control. These solutions do not allow the required modulator performance. Thus, a modulator scheme with a division of the flow of fluid from the source to the brake cylinders was developed. This scheme allows during emergency braking passing, an additional amount of fluid to cylinders through the valve, installed parallel to the main valve upon pressure increase phase and controlled by the pressure difference. The task is to develop a method for calculating the main structural dimensions of a modulator. The calculation of the valve of the second cascade, installed in parallel to the main stage, is carried out for the emergency braking mode with the maximum flow rate to ensure the required performance of the braking system. The balance of fluid flows equations is compiled at the key points. The flow rate of the fluid through each of the valves is determined by the Torricelli formula, and the pressure difference across the valves is assuned equal. The obtained relations allows building a family of Q-p curves, which can be used to select the diameter and stroke of the additional valve depending on the flow rate in the brake system.

Widespread usage of emission free public transport is the preferred strategy in many cities to reduce a congestion and pollution from the road traffic. The trolleybus is a kind of urban public transport, i.e. a fully electric vehicle, which is considered as a promising tool to enhance the efficiency of public transport and to attain the goals of sustainable development and quality of city life. The operation control of service brake system and secondary brake system (the braking torque of traction electric motor) is realized with help of one pedal in the trolleybus. Thus, there are modes of the joint operation for these systems during the braking process. Authors focus on the development of rule-based algorithm for the blending control of traction electric motor and anti-lock braking system to enhance the overall braking efficiency of a vehicle. The mathematical model of the trolleybus braking dynamics was developed for this purpose. Test bench and ride tests on different road surfaces were carried out to determine the parameters of vehicle braking efficiency and to validate the developed mathematical model. The corresponding experimental data were used to analyse the efficiency of proposed rule-based strategy for the blending control of traction electric motor and anti-lock braking system of the trolleybus. As a result, the availability of proposed control algorithm is confirmed, which secures the required braking efficiency and provides a high braking stability of the vehicle.

The aim of this study is to develop the numerical–analytical model of frictional heating in a pad/disc system during braking including the pressure fluctuations, engendered by the pump in an anti-skid braking operation. For this purpose, the problem of motion and the one-dimensional thermal problem of friction for a semi-space/semi-space tribosystem were formulated and solved. Obtained solutions allow to calculate temperature distribution on the contact surface and inside the friction elements. Thermal analysis was performed for a metal–ceramic pad and a cast iron disc during one-time braking including the time-dependent, oscillating pressure. The influence of amplitude of pressure fluctuations on the temperature variations was investigated, especially on the value of maximum temperature achieved during braking.

Opis:
The very rapid development of the automotive industry forces designers to implement new solutions. One of them is the construction of braking systems, which can enable the recovery of part of the energy lost during the braking process in hybrid vehicles. The article presents the basic types of hybrid drives currently used in motor vehicles. The principle of operation of the mechanical and electrical energy recovery system had been discussed, and the vehicles in which such solutions had been applied were indicated.
