Biowęgiel, jego produkcja oraz liczne możliwości zastosowań stanowią w Europie bezsprzecznie jeden z wiodących obszarów badawczych w ostatnich latach. Prowadzone intensywnie prace badawczo-rozwojowe i przemysłowe przyczyniły się do poznania nowych właściwości biowęgla i zastosowań, szczególnie do celów innych niż energetyczne. Celem artykułu jest omówienie aspektów jakościowych i prawnych dotyczących wymagań, jakie powinien spełniać biowęgiel wprowadzany do środowiska, a w szczególności do gleb.
Potential applications of biochar undoubtedly constitute one of the leading areas of research in Europe in recent years. A great number of research projects resulted in a discovery of biochar as a material of unique properties and wide range of applications, particularly for non-energy purposes. Giving the increasing number of examples of biochar commercial applications and the growing list of potential biochar-based products, we are now observing the emergence of biochar industry. Due to that, there is a necessity for development of a coherent national and international biochar policy, including legal framework and a unified system for biochar quality certification in order to assure safe application of biochar for non-energy purposes. The overall goal of this article is to discuss quality assurance and legal aspects of requirements for biochar introduced to the environment, particularly to soil. The article addresses the issues related to the currently recommended systems of biochar quality assurance and certification, including analytical methods, classification and certification of biochar (e.g. IBI, EBC, BQM) as well as the legislation in force in the European Union countries (including Poland) with special reference to the requirements for biochar applied to soils. Also, the article points out the main barriers for expansion of biochar industry in Europe.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research focused on the investigations of the possibilities to use biochar to improve the quality and productivity of soils. Biochar is a material similar to the commonly known charcoal obtained from the thermolysis process (a process similar to dry distillation of wood). The structure and technical properties of biochar depend on the type of biomass which is produced and the thermal decomposition process conditions: process time, temperature and atmosphere. It was found that a positive effect of biochar on the soil properties is manifested through the improvement of soil fertility, better water retention, improvement of the cation exchange, and the regulation of the pH. The biochar used in the present study was obtained by autothermal thermolysis of biomass at 300 °C. Three types of biochars of different origin were used. The biochar samples were subjected to ultimate and proximate analysis, as well as structural and porosimetric investigations. The experimental research were also conducted on the experimental test field and gave a positive effect of the presence of biochar on soil quality and plant yield. Biochar introduced into soil allows for long-term storage of carbon. The introduction of biochar to soil has a positive effect on plant growth, higher dose resulted in an increase in biochar and plant mass.

Opis:
Biochar can get from every biomass material and carbonization of the total mass of organisms. Determining the most suitable dose of the biochar to increase nutrient concentrations of pepper and also determine whether used with chemical fertilizers or not was the aim of the study. In this study, biochar was used either with or without chemical fertilizers. Biochar was applied as 0, 10, 20, 40 t۰ha-1 into two liter pots containing two kilogram of soil. N-P-K was applied as 100 mg۰kg-1 N, 100 mg kg-1 P and 125 mg۰kg-1 K respectively. Leaf N, P, K, Fe, Mn, Cu, and Zn concentrations, soil pH, EC and organic material and plant dry weight were determined in the study. As a result, while biochar combined with chemical fertilizers, the soil pH and organic material increased, soil EC decreased, plant N, P, K, Fe, Mn and dry weight increased. Soil P and K concentrations also increased with the applications. From the results of the study, biochar could be used with chemical fertilizers to increase yield and concentrations of nutrients of pepper.

(Dz. U. Nr 119, poz. 76). Przeprowadzona analiza wieloelementowa wskazuje na możliwe wykorzystanie poszczególnych składników do przygotowania polepszacza glebowego.
The presented work includes the analysis of different variants of ingredients such as biochar, basalt, wheat bran and universal soil for the development of soil improvers to be tested in later studies. For this purpose, a multi-element analysis of individual components was necessary. The preliminary multi-element analysis of individual components showed that they are highly valuable and can be used to compose the soil improver. The analysis proved that none of these additives exceeds the content of heavy metals recommended in the Regulation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of June 18, 2008 (Journal of Laws No. 119, item 76). The conducted multi-element analysis indicates the possible use of individual components for the preparation of a soil improver.

Opis:
The aim of this study is to determine the effects of biochar that obtained from walnut shell and thyme stalk on yield and biomass development of pepper plant. Biochar obtained by self-constructed oxygen-free reactor at 400°C. According to experimental design, 2 different biochar raw materials (walnut shell and thyme stalk) at 3 different doses (0, 0.1 and 0.2% w/w) were evaluated in either with or without sulphur application (0 and 0.1% w/w). Results revealed that the all parameters tested were greatly influenced from raw material, biochar dose as well as sulphur applications. Significant differences were determined between the raw materials in which the biochar was made. According to mean values the walnut shell biochar provide 38% more shoot dry weight than thyme stalk biochar. These findings clearly indicate that although biochar almost consisted of carbon, all of the biochar are not the same, and depends on the raw material; biochar even can reduce plant growth. The effect of sulfur application was also significant, especially in the pots where biochar and sulfur were applied together. The lowest yield value was determined at control as well as 0.1% thyme stalk biochar applied pots as 34.2 and 33.4 g pot-1, respectively while the highest yield value was determined at 5 g walnut shell biochar and sulphur applied pot as 75.7 g pot-1. It has been determined that dose and efficiency studies should be performed for each raw material to determine optimal biochar source and doses.

Four infrared spectroscopic techniques - photoacoustic (PAS), diffuse reflectance (DRS), attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and transmission (TS) - were evaluated for the qualitative analysis of the biochar obtained from willow feedstock during pyrolysis. Increase in pyrolysis temperature resulted in more aromatic and carbonaceous structure of biochars. These changes could easily be detected from Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectral differences. The comparison of the spectra obtained by the four FT-IR techniques allowed to conclude that there are differences in the spectra acquired using different IR technique caused by different signal acquisition. PAS and ATR were the best techniques used in order to obtain spectra with smooth and sharp peaks, in contrast to TS, where bands were less-separated. DRS turned out to be the weakest of all techniques, due to poor spectral quality and poor separation of the bands.

Biochar was prepared from corn (Zea mays) stalks and impregnated with sulfuric acid. The biomass was impregnated for 24 h with a 50% solution of H2SO4 with impregnation ratios 1:2 (B 1:2) and 1:3 p/v (B 1:3); then, it was carbonized in a muffle furnace at 520°C for 30 min with a 10°C per min ramp. The adsorption capacity to remove anions (nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate) in an aqueous solution was evaluated by varying the temperature. The adsorption mechanism was studied by determining the thermodynamic parameters: Gibbs free energy (ΔGº), enthalpy (ΔHº) and entropy (ΔSº) standard. The biochars were characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis and were found to exhibit a heterogeneous surface and porous nature, with C, O, S, and Si. The experiments in the batch system showed the best performance of B 1: 2 in the removal of the three anions occurred at 303 K, while B 1: 3 had the best performance at 298 K. From the thermodynamic parameters, it was found that the removal processes are endothermic, their mechanism is by chemisorption. It is concluded that synthesized biochar is an excellent alternative to removing nutrient anions present in the solution.

Opis:
Sewage sludge (SS) is a byproduct of wastewater treatment which is commonly used as fertilizer in the world. However, due to the possible contamination with heavy metals, xenobiotics and fecal pathogens, its application on fields is not so common in Poland. A safer alternative for agricultural use is the SS produced by food industry in small „inhouse” wastewater treatment plants, as substances that are used in its production are usually less harmful. As pretreatment of industrial wastewater is required before dumping the wastewater into common stream, the SS is an abundant byproduct that needs to be managed in an environmentally friendly and cost effective manner. Because the water content in SS is usually high, the dosage and logistics are problematic and thus we propose converting the sewage sludge into solid granular fertilizer in the vermicomposting process. Not only are the weight and volume of product decreased as a result, but also the nutrients such as N, P, and K become concentrated and made more accessible for plants. The SS is also further stabilized and less prone to produce odors and becoming putrid. The aim of this study was the in-depth analysis of the SS process vermicomposting with biochar. The SS was acquired from a local soft drink factory wastewater treatment plant. The batches of SS were inoculated with 20% mature vermicompost and E. fetida worms. Instead of typical bulking agents (like woodchips or straw) powdered biochar was used in the concentrations of 5, 10 and 15% as it exhibits beneficial influence on the process and increase the value of the final product.

Adsorption is one of the basic surface phenomena involving saturation of the adsorbent surface with adsorbate molecules located near the adsorbent-adsorbate interface. The processes that are accompanied by the accumulation of adsorbate molecules on the surface are different from absorption, which is related to absorbing molecules into the whole mass and requires diffusion into the interior. If both processes can occur simultaneously, this phenomenon is called sorption. The aim of the present study was to characterize the sorption properties of selected sorbents and to assess the possibility of their application to support the treatment of coking wastewater from ammonium nitrogen, phenol, and TOC. The scope of the study included the examinations of sorption properties of selected sorbents (coal dust, coke dust, biochar), physicochemical tests of coking wastewater after biological treatment, as well as the examinations aimed to determine the dose of adsorbents and time needed to establish the equilibrium state of the process. The results obtained were analyzed for the effect of dose and contact time on the pollutant removal efficiency. The literature describes the efficiency of ammonium nitrogen removal from wastewater using chemical processes. However, there is a lack of studies on the removal of ammonium nitrogen, phenol, and TOC from industrial (coking) wastewater. The conducted study aimed to develop an alternative solution to the currently used conventional methods of removing high concentrations of pollutants from wastewater.

Different rates of organic amendments were incorporated into sandy loam soil to investigate their impact on paspalum physiological, biochemical, and development in pot and field settings over three seasons (winter, spring and summer). Under the conditions of these two places, paspalum leaves gas exchange characteristics, stomatal traits, anatomy traits, relative water content, proline, antioxidant enzyme activities, and paspalum pigments were determined. For the irrigation system, two rates were chosen: 20% and 60% of the water holding capacity of the control plot WHC. In this study, two advanced statistical analyses were conducted. A factor analysis of mixed data (FAMD) was performed for the analysis of the effect of our charcoal on soil data. Meanwhile, the impact of banana waste biochar on biological activities was investigated using multiple factorial analysis (MFA). The use of biochar and compost blends boosted the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of treated soils, according to our findings. Furthermore, the use of banana waste biochar improved biological basis in the summer season compared with previous seasons. Different antioxidant capacities in seashore paspalum were boosted in the improved soils compared to the untreated ones.

The research aimed at evaluating four biochar types which have the most adequate characteristics as inoculant carrier of indigenous Phosphate Solubilizing Microorganism (PSM) from acid sulphate soil. The observed biochar characteristics consist of the bulk density, total pore space, water holding capacity, C organic, N, pH, EC, charcoal percentage, and ash content. The pore diameters and photomicrograph of biochar were observed by using SEM. The viability test was conducted in order to determine the appropriateness of biochar as PSM inoculant through inoculation on four biochar types made of rice husk, coconut shell, corncob, and oil palm empty bunch, followed by six months storage period. Monthly observation was conducted related to the PSM population, pH, and moisture content. The results show that interaction of biochar types and storage periods has no significant effect on the PSM viability, pH, and moisture content. The PSM viability of four biochars after six months storage period is relatively stable in the range of log 7.07 cfu.g-1 to log 9.18 cfu.g-1.The highest PSM viability was found on coconut shell biochar with the magnitude of log 9.18 cfu.g-1 and pH of 7.01 as well as moisture content of 26.86% after six months storage period. This research offers the advantage of using agricultural waste substance as biochar that capable to maintain microbial viability with six months storage period.

This study discusses results of experiments on hydrodynamic assessment of gas flow through backbone (skeletal) porous materials with an anisotropic structure. The research was conducted upon materials of diversified petrographic characteristics – cokes. The study was conducted for a variety of hydrodynamic conditions, using air. The basis for assessing hydrodynamics of gas flow through porous material was a gas stream that results from the pressure forcing such flow. The results of measurements indicate a clear impact of the type of material on the gas permeability, and additionally – as a result of their anisotropic internal structure – to a significant effect of the flow direction on the value of gas stream. In aspect of scale transfer problem, a method of mapping the flow geometry of skeletal materials has been developed and usefulness of numerical methods has been evaluated to determine pressure drop and velocity distribution of gas flow. The results indicate the compliance of the used calculation method with the result of experiments.

Opis:
The agricultural and environmental sectors are plagued with challenges. In agriculture, soil infertility and the subsequent quagmire of poor crop yield, has always been a major problem that limits worldwide agricultural productivity. Major environmental concerns, including Climate Change and Soil Pollution, are receiving continual attention from key stakeholders. Efforts are hence being directed at curtailing or mitigating the devastative consequences of these man-made ‘monsters’. Recently, agricultural and environmental research reveals biochar to be a veritable technology that could be used to deal with some of these concerns. Biochar has the ability to have impact upon important soil properties, such as the raising of soil pH and water holding capacity, the attraction of beneficial fungi and microbes, improvement of cation exchange capacity (CEC), induce high carbon sequestration ability and nutrient retention capacity. Moreover, its large surface area makes it a potential remedy to several identified challenges. This review, therefore, critically highlights the importance of biochar, as well as the various ways of harnessing biochar technology towards global food security and environmental sustainability.
