Opis:
The article deals with issues regarded to implementation of bilingual education in Ukrainian universities. This process can be considered as part of Ukrainian integration into European and world scientific and educational space. Furthermore, this area is being developed according with the National Doctrine of Educational Development. Specific aspects of bilingual education development at the end of the 20th century are noted. Bilingual educational system leads to both getting the education as provided by the bilingual system itself and personality formation when an individual is open to the interaction with the whole world. Applied to obtaining a certain specialty at the university, the goal of bilingual education is a synthesis of communicative and subject competencies. It is reported that a foreign (in particular, English) language is not only the goal, but also a means of understanding the world of special knowledge. Bilingual education features are examined in detail. It is noted that at the moment a comprehensive concept of bilingual professional education in Ukraine has not been built. Currently, only certain aspects of the problem of bilingual education in higher education have been defined. А number of issues have been formulated which need to be theoretically comprehended in order to implement succesfully the bilingual educational system at the universities. Attention is paid to the complex of didactically and methodically relevant factors which depend on the students’ future profession and qualifications. Appropriate criteria have been identified, which influence on many levels on the content, organization and choice of methods of bilingual education in a certain field of study. It is underlined that the factors (criteria) are both the linguistic ones and non-linguistic ones. Finding and taking into account all these factors is mandatory to create the scientifically based concept of the bilingual educational system at the non-language departments.

The purpose of this is to analyze the toponyms present in some Italian-Polish and Polish-Italian bilingual dictionaries. After selecting a “skeleton” of the dictionaries that trace part of the history of the bilingual lexicography in question, we move on to the analysis of the toponyms used in the dictionaries. In a lexicultural context, understood as the transfer of the cultural elements of a given language, we observe the choices made by lexicographers of the different eras and try to understand the reasons, sometimes of a personal nature or dictated by the historical context, or sometimes influenced by the political system in a given country. At the same time, we want to highlight the evolution in the diachronic field that toponyms and their equivalents have had in the dictionaries in question, as well as their value in teaching a particular foreign language.

The article deals with bilingual education (teaching academic content in two languages), which provides general and further education to students of different nationalities. The United States is considered one of the most multilingual countries in the world, which is why the American experience in bilingual education is very valuable. Ukraine is a multinational country too. So, it is important to solve the problem of the introduction of bilingual education to determine the components of the content of such education and its main features for its effective functioning and development. The article considers the peculiarities of the content of bilingual education in US secondary education. Based on the analysis of the content of bilingual education in secondary schools in the United States, the most important components that can be used in Ukrainian secondary schools are identified. The article considers and compares the content of bilingual education in some American schools in different states. The introductory course of a bilingual secondary school includes compulsory and elective subjects. In the most populous states, bilateral bilingual programmes are common. They are the most effective and therefore prestigious, but also costly. Low-efficiency programmes are common in many other states, which cannot fund expensive projects, such as transitional bilingual programmes, double immersion programmes, monolingual programmes, etc. The most common minority languages involved in bilingual programmes are Spanish, French, German, oriental, and other languages. To assess the level of knowledge of bilingual students, tests with tasks in the native language of students, accompanied by descriptive explanations and expected answers, are used. This type of testing is called Multiple choice. The acquisition of a second language occurs in parallel with the process of students’ acculturation. The specifics of the multicultural development of students in US schools are revealed in the article. The use of bilingual education is one of the leading trends in developing the content of US school education. That is why the positive experience of the United States is valuable for Ukraine.

Current research in bilingual children’s language development with one language dominant has shown that one linguistic system can affect the other. This is called Crosslinguistic Influence (CLI). This paper explores whether CLI is experienced by a bilingual child raised in two typologically distinct languages in terms of phonological development. It uses data from the study of a child simultaneously acquiring Indonesian and German between the ages of 12 months - 20 months, with Indonesian as the dominant language. The sound segments developed by the child showed universal tendencies, with the appearance of bilabials prior to alveolar sounds, followed by velar sounds. The sounds were produced mostly in the form of stops, nasals and glides. Three phonological processes were displayed by the child: substitution, assimilation and syllable structures. The front rounded vowel [ʏ], which exists in German but not in the Indonesian sound system, was systematically replaced by the palatal approximant [j]. This approximant exists in the Indonesian sound system but not in the German phonemic inventory. This provides evidence that, in terms of phonological development, the child experienced CLI, but only for certain sound transfers.

Swahili dictionaries have been on the market for over a century. New publications often take into account works that have been already published and base the list of headwords on older dictionaries. While this is widely accepted practice, nowadays also new, computer-based activities may no longer be ignored. Analysis presented in this paper aims at detecting the differences and similarities among Swahili bilingual published dictionaries on the macrostructural level, and at identifying possible trends in Swahili dictionary compilation. It also takes into account corpus-based methodology and points to its superiority over intuition-based methods in dictionary compilation.

The Dictionary Writing System Lexit and Its Application in Bilingual LexicographyThe paper presents LexIt  – a web-based Dictionary Writing System designed for the creation and enlargement of dictionaries. A wide range of dictionaries – monolingual, specialised, multilingual, thesauri, can be configured with the system, as it enables users to model, copy, and save templates describing the structure of any dictionary. The paper describes a model for a bilingual dictionary containing phonetic, grammatical, stylistic, semantic, and collocational information and its configuration within LexIt. A bilingual dictionary is chosen for a demonstration, as its entries have a complex structure that includes various elements reflecting the correspondences between source and target languages.

The idea that bilingualism can give us an advantage in life is of great interest to the scientific community due to its significant positive implications for healthcare and education at large. In recent years, several scholars have provided evidence in favour of the so-called bilingual advantage or benefit, suggesting a positive association between bilingualism and cognitive development. In order to understand whether the claim is fully warranted, the present paper sets out to examine the evidence in support and against the existence of a bilingual benefit for individuals. Following a brief discussion on the use of the terms bilingualism and multilingualism in the literature, the paper proceeds to provide a summary of evidence of advantages and disadvantages currently associated with prior language knowledge in the mind, highlighting some of the possible reasons for the different results that are being reported and introducing the language background bias. The paper ends with some suggestions for future research that can help us move forward and increase our understanding of the bi-/multilingual advantage as a broader phenomenon.

Martyna Klejnowska-Borowska - Uniwersytet Warszawski. Analiza przedstawiona w niniejszym artykule została oparta na modelu analizy terminograficznej autorstwa M. Łukasika (2007, 2010), który badał polsko-angielskie i angielsko-polskie słowniki specjalistyczne wydane w latach 1990–2006. Autor przeanalizował około 600 słowników dwu- i wielojęzycznych, dzięki czemu powstała adnotowana bibliografia. Ponadto dzięki badaniom opracowana została typologia słowników specjalistycznych, a dzięki analizie kwantytatywnej wykryte zostały lakuny terminograficzne w zakresie języka polskiego i angielskiego na polskim rynku wydawniczym. Innym ważnym rezultatem badania okazało się opracowanie prototypu najbardziej popularnego dzieła terminograficznego w zakresie polsko-angielskiej i angielsko-polskiej terminografii.
The article presents the analysis of Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish terminological dictionaries published in Poland between 1990 and 2012. The paper is divided into three parts. The first part presents the analysis of macrostructure parameters which, inter alia, included: the way the lexicon is organized: alphabetically or thematically; language format; dictionary type (glossaries, dictionaries of acronyms, terminological dictionaries: explanatory terminological dictionaries, encyclopedic terminological dictionaries, hybrid terminological dictionaries and thesauruses); bibliography references; indexes; attachments; size of a dictionary and its thematic scope; field(s) of science included in dictionaries. The second part deals with microstructure parameters such as: grammatical information, the dictionary definitions, accent marks. Finally, some faults of the analyzed terminological dictionaries are revealed.
Настоящая статья посвящена анализу польско-русских и русско-польских терминологи- ческих словарей изданных в Польше в 1990–2012 гг. Статья состоит из трех частей. В первой части представлен анализ таких параметров макроструктуры словаря как: расположение словарных статей (алфавитный или тематический порядок); языковой формат; вид словаря (глоссарий, словарь акронимов, терминологический словарь: объяснительный терминологический словарь, энциклопедический терминологический словарь, гибридный терминологический словарь, тезаурус); библиография; индексы; приложения; объем словаря и его предмет; отрасли, которые охватывает словарь. Вторая часть посвящена анализу параметров микроструктуры, к которым относятся: грамматическая информация; дефиниция; ударение. Последняя часть представляет ошибки, выступающие в проанализированных терминологических словарях.

Alongside the globalisation phenomenon, many European countries have already situated their educational practice in existing multilingual contexts. The multilingualism policies of the European Union provided an ideal backdrop to the development of integrative approaches such as Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) and, as a result, the term CLIL was coined in 1996 through sustained interest and pedagogical activity in the field of bilingual education across Europe. CLIL environments can also facilitate the promotion of intercultural communicative competence as described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In addition, as culture seems to be one of the five dimensions of CLIL provision, it is essential to discuss and consider the incorporation of an intercultural perspective in CLIL. Russian post-revolutionary abbreviations in the first bilingual Russian dictionariesThe process of real expansion of abbreviations started at the end of 19th century and it developed tremendously in 20th century. The process of creating abbreviations in Russian became active after World War I and suddenly became widespread particularly in the post-revolutionary period. At that time abbreviations were created spontaneously and in a disorganized way, yet numerous creations were commonly used. The period of time during which they were used was usually short, compare: ОСОАВИАХИМ (= Общество содействия обороне, авиации и химическому строительству). In most cases they were names of political parties, combat, revolutionary, social and other organizations, for instance: волисполком, военкомат, ревком. This characteristic type of Russian lexis was very troublesome for Polish intellectuals who were trying to code the Polish Russian language, i.e. specific, language code with many Russian and Soviet idioms that was used by the Polish living in the Soviet Union during the post-revolutionary period. Attempts to standardize abbreviations were reflected in translation dictionaries (Polish-Russian and Russian-Polish) published in Moscow in the 30s of 20th century. Русские послереволюционные аббревиатуры в первых советских двуязычных словаряхПроцесс настоящей экспансии аббревиатур начался в конце XIX столетия и продолжался, продвигаясь большими темпами, в ХХ веке. В русском языке аббревиация сильно активизировалась после первой мировой войы, особенно бурно распространялась в ранний послереволюционный период. В то время аббревиатуры образовались спонтанно, стихийно, неупорядоченно, но – несмотря на это – многие подобные образования попадали в общенародный обиход. Как правило, их жизнь быстро обрывалась, ср. ОСОАВИАХИМ (= Общество содействия обороне, авиации и химическому строительству). В основном это были названия политических партий, боевых, революционных, общественных и др. организаций, напр.: волисполком, военкомат, ревком. Этот характерный слой русской лексики доставлял много хлопот польским интеллигентам, пытавшимся кодифицировать советский польский язык, этот особый, сильнорусифицированный и советизированный языковой код, используемый поляками, проживавшими в СССР в межвоенный период. Попытки нормализовать образования аббревиатурного типа нашли отражение в переводных словарях (польско-русском и русско-польском), выпущенных в Москве в 30-е годы ХХ в.
