Opis:
Subject and purpose of work: The aim of the article is to present selected aspects of the digitization process of the banking sector in Poland, including the role of the digital channel in the sale of banking products. Materials and methods: The research is of comparative character and is based on data from the financial website PRNews.pl, NBP, KNF and the ECB Bank. Results: Mobile banking in Poland is highly concentrated. In 2016-2019, the five largest banks serviced 82% of all mobile banking customers, and their number increased by 27% annually. Conclusions: Digitization simplifies the process of obtaining and processing information and contributes to reducing operating costs. However it also forces banks to prepare appropriate security and implement costly technological investments. It increases the availability and quality of banking services, and moves customer service from banking branches to the digital channel. Additionally it contributes to reducing the network of branches and the number of employees employed in them.
Przedmiot i cel pracy: Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wybranych aspektów procesu cyfryzacji sektora bankowego wPolsce, wtym roli bankowości elektronicznej wsprzedaży produktów bankowych. Materiały i metody: Badanie ma charakter porównawczy i opiera się na danych z finansowego portalu internetowego PRNews.pl, Narodowego Banku Polskiego, Komisji Nadzoru Finansowego i Europejskiego Banku Centralnego. Wyniki: Bankowość mobilna wPolsce jest silnie skoncentrowana. Wlatach 2016-2019 pięć największych banków obsługiwało 82% wszystkich klientów bankowości mobilnej, a ich liczba wzrastała o 27% rocznie. Wnioski: Cyfryzacja upraszcza proces pozyskiwania i przetwarzania informacji oraz przyczynia się do obniżenia kosztów operacyjnych. Zmusza jednak również banki do przygotowania odpowiednich zabezpieczeń i realizacji kosztownych inwestycji technologicznych. Zwiększa dostępność i jakość usług bankowych oraz przenosi obsługę klientów z oddziałów bankowych do kanału cyfrowego. Dodatkowo przyczynia się do zmniejszenia sieci oddziałów i liczby zatrudnionych w nich pracowników.

The purpose of this article. The aim of the article is to identify the opinions of bank customers on the level of security of electronic banking in Poland and to analyze the actions taken by banks in the event of a security incident. Methodology. The analysis was based on data collected through a questionnaire survey. The survey with non-random sampling involved 222 people, and 217 records were included in the analysis. The form contained closed questions. The result of the research. The analysis of the survey results indicates a high sense of security among bank account users, especially thanks to campaigns initiated by banks that inform customers about possible dangers. Respondents value direct communication and quick responses, which in this age of technological advances are the most important element in protecting customers. The literature review, which complements the survey, also confirms the high commitment of banking institutions in ensuring security. Despite the analysis of the survey results, it is important to bear in mind the lack of their translation to the general population, which does not allow a clear confirmation of the total security of customers holding funds in bank accounts.

Opis:
Efforts to create a banking union in the European Union focused in 2012 primarily on the common banking supervision. It was found in particular that the joint supervision should have been located in the European Central Bank, but would cover only the largest banks of the Member States. Smaller banks would remain under the control of the existing supervision on the national level. Among the countries that strongly supported such a solution was Germany. This paper tries to analyze the reasons why Germany preferred a “split” supervision despite the significant disadvantages of such a solution. The strongest argument concerns the intention to protect the banking sector against interference by the Community authorities. The reason is its specific shape dominated by small and medium-sized financial institutions. They play a crucial role in providing financial services to the sector of medium-sized businesses, so called Mittelstand, which is the most distinct element of the Rhenish capitalism. Smaller banks have developed with these companies an almost symbiotic, long-term oriented relationship. This is why they have become universal banks offering a variety of services to a single company. This feature, highly controversial after the crisis, is defended in Germany due to tradition and lower costs generated for small companies. The preference to leave the smaller banks under the supervision of national authorities may be also explained by their specific ownership structure. Most of the small-sized banks belong to the state or are cooperatives, so it is possible to use them for the implementation of local and regional economic policy. This is not the only reason for their attractiveness to the politicians. Places in the management and supervisory boards of public banks can be an attractive instrument for personnel policy of political parties. For these reasons, the number of adherents to subordinate the medium and small banks to a supervision outside Germany, which could impeach certain practices, is quite limited. An addition argument against a centralized supervision on the EU-level is related to the functional independence of the central bank. This issue is important for Germany because of its traditional anti-inflationary macroeconomic policy orientation. Since the crisis Germany has seen the European Central Bank losing its restrictive pattern of the monetary policy based on the experience of the Bundesbank and moving towards more and more expansionary monetary policy. In this context, the ECB as a body responsible for the overall supervision of European banks could easily fall into internal conflicts with the principles of monetary policy. The last argument explaining the position of Germany on the joint supervision is the shape of its own institutions of supervision. Germany has adopted a bipolar model in which tasks are divided between the central bank and a special authority, supported by other bodies and associations of financial institutions.

Opis:
One factor in the field of relationships to banks is the so-called relationship banking, which is a well-known practice in the bank oriented economies in Europe. Relationship banking means a long run relationship between one or a small number of banks to firms, especially in lending, so the terminus is in this field relationship lending. On the basis of a huge telephonequestionnaire in Poland concerning financial management we have tried to answer some research questions in the field of relationship banking in detail in order to bring light into this somewhat dark area of relationships between banks and firms. The main aspect of relationship banking is the duration of this relationship. Using empirical methodology, we analyse this relationship on the basis of the length of time as well as aspects such as the age of the firm, the number of bank relationships, the industry, the influence of strategies and the access to credits.

Opis:
As businesses are actively incorporating technology as means of cost reduction and service provision, financial institutions have lately been one of the most active institutions in utilising information technology (IT) to their advantage. Although technology presented financial institutions with many opportunities and opened the door for a new hybrid sector to be formed, this came with its share of disadvantages one of which revolves around cyber security. Combined with the complex nature of products and services offered online through non-traditional financial institutions, this meant that adjusting the regulatory framework governing such products, services and institutions has now become a must. Since the current regulatory framework applicable on online banking does not differ much from that applied on bricks-and-mortar ones especially in terms of money laundering and deposit protection schemes, this paper recommends a hybrid, tech-centred, regulatory framework that is specifically designed to cater for financial institutions in order to offer users of these platforms higher levels of protection and suggests the creation of a joint regulatory and supervisory body that oversees and regulates activities of FinTechs. Such change should take into consideration the higher risk factor associated with online banking and the nature of service provision. The paper in its unique approach aims to inspire and influence change to further enhance customer protection and service provision of online banks.

Opis:
The article presents the results of examining the changes that have occurred in connection with the digitization of banking in Poland and its impact on this segment. The data is taken from the National Bank of Poland, the Polish Financial Supervision Authority, and the Prnews.pl website. A descriptive, statistical and Pearson correlation method were used. The results indicate an increasing share of customers using banking products in a digital way. The number of both website and mobile applications customers is growing. Despite the general increase in the number of people using banks, the number of bank branches as well as the employees working them has decreased. Mobile applications may soon become the main sales and service channel for banking products, the number of customers of banks using them regularly increases. In fact, the rise in digitization for banking and the decrease in the number of branches and employees are strongly correlated. The increasing usage of online and mobile banking is influenced by convenience, availability, and a reduction in the time customers spend on purchasing and servicing their products. Banks are interested in developing these types of services in order to both meet the changing needs of customers and to save on operating costs.

Opis:
The COVID-19 pandemic was a challenge for all aspects of life. Besides others, this includes health and social life as well as the overall state of the economy. To contain the spread of the coronavirus, governments throughout the world imposed temporary closures (lockdowns). The banking industry was affected by these lockdowns in multiple ways. To mitigate the potential negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on banks, the national and international supervisory authorities passed comprehensive measures. The aim of this paper is to highlight the main regulatory facilitations for German banks by focusing on measures regarding capital buffers and the operating areas of banks. Besides this, an expert study was conducted to analyze how the measures are perceived by German banks and to develop recommendations for action. The results of the study show that the measures have mainly had a signaling effect on banks. However, measures like the easing of capital requirements are also related to higher risks for the banks. The results illustrate that most banks have hesitated in taking these additional risks if they can avoid them, with other measures like general moratoria on payments considered helpful. Overall, the results demonstrated that the experts prefer a cautious approach to using the easing measures.

This study is an attempt at evaluating the impact of the banking sector crisis of 2014-2016 upon the Ukrainian market of investment funds. The analyses cover a period between 2004 and the 2nd quarter of 2016, to illustrate the trend of changes observed on the market under study. The main focus of research was placed on platforms shared between the banking sector and the investment fund sector, such as the investment of free fund assets in bonds and shares issued by banking institutions or the use of financial instruments targeted to specific investor groups). Based on the findings, it may be concluded that the force of the systemic crisis’ impact upon the market of investment funds was related to the type of investment funds under examination. The effects of the sector’s decline were clearly reflected in the operation of open-end funds and interval funds, as evidenced by sizeable reductions of both their net assets and rates of return. For other types of investment funds, the researchers found no evidence of any impact in this respect
