    The following article describes a phenomenon of the correspondence of arts using the works of Frederic Chopin and Alexander Scriabin as an example. The author is interested in the relations between music and literature and Chopin’s ballads and Scriabin’s piano poems, the genres, which are an effect of such relations. The analysis of those works shows that both composers have a different understanding of the essence of music and literature but there are also similarities. The ballads and poems do not convey a literary programme or music il¬lustration but their sound matter is additionally complemented by the genre category, title or commentary instead.

    Nie udało się w niniejszym szkicu rozwiązać zagadki Ucieczki. Trzy podstawowe i powiązane ze sobą pytania o czas i miejsce powstania utworu oraz jego przesłanie skutecznie bronią się przed jednoznaczną i przekonującą odpowiedzią. Nie można wykluczyć prawdopodobieństwa żadnych z przedstawionych hipotez co do czasu i miejsca powstania utworu. Jaki cel przyświecał poecie przy pisaniu i publikowaniu tej ballady – tę tajemnicę zabrał Mickiewicz do grobu. Próby klasyfikowania Ucieczki jako eksperymentu (jak chce Juliusz Kleiner) lub ćwiczenia warsztatowego (Maria Żmigrodzka) są raczej świadectwem kapitulacji przed tekstem, który – nawiązując pośrednio do oryginału Bürgera – jest jednak niczym innym, jak polską wersją Lenory, podobnie jak Świetlana Żukowskiego jest jej rosyjską wersją, ale znajdując się poza ramami tomu z Balladami i romansami z roku 1822, robi wrażenie utworu osobliwie osamotnionego.
    This sketch has failed to solve the puzzle of Escape [Ucieczka]. Three basic interrelated questions about the time and place of the work’s origin and its message effectively defend themselves against a clear and convincing answer. One cannot exclude the probability of any of the presented hypotheses as to the time and place of the work’s origin. What was Mickiewicz’s purpose while writing and publishing this ballad still remains the mystery the poet took to his grave. The attempts to categorize Escape as an experiment (as Kleiner wants) or a poetry workshop exercise (Maria Żmigrodzka) are rather a testimony of surrender to the text, which – referring indirectly to Bürger’s original – is nothing but a Polish version of Lenora, like Świetlana by Żukowski is its Russian version. However, being taken out of the volume Ballady i romanse of 1822 it gives the impression of an oddly isolated work.

    Der vorliegende Rezensionsartikel versucht eine Darstellung und Bewertung eines überaus anregenden Buches zur Verwendung von Balladentexten im Schulunterricht. Der Band, der nach drei Jahren in zweiter Auflage erscheint, überarbeitet und erweitert (was den Bedarf an solchen Grundlagenwerken unterstreicht), gliedert sich in zwei Hauptteile, von denen der erste sich mit den literaturtheoretischen Grundlagen beschäftigt, der zweite Teil mit Einzelbeispielen von Gedichtanalysen und Anleitungen, wie diese Texte für das unterschiedliche Niveau der verschiedenen Klassenstufen 5 bis 10 (Sekundarstufen I und II) aufbereitet und vermittelt werden können. Abgesehen von dem zumeist vorgeschlagenen, erheblichen medialen Aufwand (z. B. Filmproduktion) bietet der Band vielfältige Hinweise, wie die manchmal recht schwierigen Texte (z. B. auch ein längerer in englischer Sprache) für Schülerinnen und Schüler „schmackhaft“ gemacht werden können. Zu diskutieren ist die Behauptung, dass es sich hier durchgehend um die Gattung „Ballade“ handelt, aber für den Unterrichtsgebrauch scheint mir das nebensächlich. Ausgeklammert bleibt aus nicht nachvollziehbaren Gründen die Volksballade, ihr wird sogar die Existenz abgesprochen, und erstaunlicherweise außen vor bleibt auch die an sich naheliegende Möglichkeit, wenn man schon von „Balladen“ redet, die Texte im Unterricht gesungen zu hören und selbst zu singen. Hier sind m. E. ideologische Scheuklappen der beiden Autorinnen eingebaut, die skeptisch stimmen müssten, aber angesichts der Gesamtdarstellung von Unterrichtsbeispielen auf hohem, mediengestützten Niveau durchaus zu vernachlässigen sind.
    This review article attempts to present and evaluate an extremely stimulating book on the use of ballad texts in school lessons. The volume, which is being published in its second edition after three years, revised and expanded (which underlines the need for such basic works), is divided into two main parts, the first of which deals with the basics of literary theory, the second part with individual examples of poem analyzes and instructions on how these texts can be prepared and taught for the different levels of the different school-grades 5 to 10 (secondary levels I and II). Apart from the considerable media effort that is usually suggested (e. g. film production), the volume offers a variety of tips on how the sometimes quite difficult texts (e. g. a longer one in English) can be made “palatable” for pupils. The claim that this is all about the “ballad” genre is worth discussing, but for classroom use, this seems irrelevant to me. For incomprehensible reasons, the folk ballad is left out; its existence is even denied, and the suprisingly obvious possibility, when we talk about “ballads”, of hearing the texts sung in class and singing them yourself is also overlooked. In my opinion, the two authors have ideological blinders built in here, which should make one skeptical, but are quite negligible in view of the overall presentation of teaching examples at a high, media-supported level.

    The article presents the evolution of formal, graphic and typographic solutions, as well as fundamental changes in the content of the ballads included in the collection entitled Powsinogi beskidzkie by Emil Zegadłowicz. A comparative analysis covered the editions from 1923, 1925, 1927, 1929, 1938 and the editions of the works Ballada o Wowrze (1924) and Ballada o Świątkarzu (1928). The results of the research indicate the important role of the editorial tradition in the formation of Zegadłowicz’s book, confirm the author’s interest in old and Modern Art, and indicate a conscious and deliberate resignation from the latest printing achievements in favor of the former printing workshop. Editions of the Powsinogi beskidzkie are in line with the “idea of a beautiful book”. The evolution of the graphic form of subsequent editions largely testifies to the aesthetic changes that took place in the design of the book in the interwar years.

    This article presents a comparative analysis of creative solutions within the genre of ballades for piano and orchestra in works created by local and foreign composers in the first half of the 20th century, such as L. Różycki, G. Tailleferre, B. Britten, N. Medtner, and I. Shamo. It has been determined that most works are characterised by purposeful inspiration which influenced their style. The basis of the genre lies in the synthesis of various features of the folk ballad and the poetic piano concerto. The first component combines epic song features, parts of folk songs or their arrangements, and declamatory melodies. The second one can be noticed in the different types of cooperation between the soloist (or soloists) and the orchestra, in the combination of features characteristic for single-part and cyclic forms (suite, rhapsody or different types of cyclic sonatas), and in the logic behind juxtaposing contrasting genre features or the figurative transformation of monothematic variants.
    Artykuł jest poświęcony analizie porównawczej twórczych rozwiązań w zakresie gatunku ballady na fortepian z orkiestrą, w dorobku kompozytorów różnych krajów, których twórczość przypada na pierwszą połowę XX wieku – takich jak: L. Różycki, G. Tailleferre, B. Britten, N. Medtner i I. Shamo. Charakterystyczne, że większość utworów ma celowo ukierunkowaną inspirację, co wpływa na ich stylistykę. Geneza tego gatunku muzycznego tkwi w syntezie cech ballady typu ludowego z koncertem fortepianowym typu poetyckiego. Pierwsza z tych składowych łączy cechy gatunku pieśni epickiej, cytaty z pieśni ludowych lub ich stylizacje, deklamacyjność melodii; druga przejawia się w różnych typach współdziałania pianisty z orkiestrą, połączenia cech charakterystycznych dla gatunków jednoczęściowych i cyklicznych (suita, rapsodia czy też sonata cykliczna w różnych odmianach) i w wynikającej z tego połączenia – logiki zestawiania kontrastów cech gatunkowych czy też obrazowej transformacji wariantów monotematycznych.
