The so called Suwalki Gap has been lately among important regional security related topics and it has been linked with its geostrategic location and geographical complexity of the terrain for conducting military operations. The threat toward Baltic states cause it to be discussed widely by civilian and military authorities, especially in the context of destabilising Ukraine and annexation of Crimea by the Russian Federation and possible assertive actions. The paper proposes an approach to the Suwalki Gap issue based on its geostrategic location and operational importance. It includes also its geographical characteristic connected with conducting military operations in that specific terrain. It furthers the discussion of tactical aspects of defensive and offensive operations there. The outcome of the NATO Warsaw Summit is also discussed in the context of Suwalki Gap as a land bridge linking Baltic states with the NATO allies.

„Bishop Czeslaw Rydzewski’s Visitations from July 1947” is a first bishop’s report about personal and material state of the parishes in Suwalki and Sejny Regions, the report which was made after the Second World War. The value of these proceedings is important inasmuch as they testify the most important events and affairs of the local churches not only of the occupation years, but also of the first postwar years. Because of lacking other sources they are the basic material that enables to investigate the history of particular parishes and churches. The original of the visitations is held in the Elk Diocese Archive in Elk.

The article presents first arrests of priests in Łomża region in the year 1939, drawing on unpublished memoirs of Felician Franciscan sisters who were witnesses to Father Stanisław Maciątek being arrested in Wiżajny. An attempt is made to present the background of the ethnic conflict in Wiżajny region and the role of the pastors of the Evangelical church. It is pointed out how dislike and hatred can spiral out of control causing much tragedy.

Dynamic changes in the security environment are forcing us to reflect on the shape of the international order at the end of the second decade of the 21st century. The aggressive policy of the Russian Federation, which is confirmed by the conflict with Georgia in 2008 and the current situation in Ukraine, indicates that the use of military violence in the resolution of international disputes is not a historical category at all. This is of particular importance to the geopolitical location of the Republic of Poland. The length of our land border with the Russian Federation is 210 km, while with Belarus it is 418 km. The above fact has a fundamental impact not only on the public debate on the security of our country and the region, but also, and perhaps most importantly, on the shape of defence policy and the content of planning possible measures to prevent and counteract the escalation of prospective tensions in NATO-Russia relations. Both Russian military doctrine and the opinions expressed by politicians and specialists dealing with military issues and political and military experts indicate that, from the Russian perspective, the Baltic States’ membership of the North Atlantic Alliance and the presence of NATO troops on the territory of these countries, is highly unfavourable. Therefore, there are grounds to believe that countries such as Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, are treated by Russia as natural bridgeheads, convenient for bringing possible strikes against Russia. Therefore, it is possible that blocking communication routes leading to these countries, while cutting them off from the support of allied land forces, may prove to be a key success factor in the situation of a hypothetical armed conflict, aimed not only at depriving these countries of their sovereignty, but also aimed at discrediting the power of the Alliance.

Strontium isotope ratios for 14 samples of anorthositic rocks in the Suwałki Anorthosite Massif (SAM) range from 0.704875 to 0.705772. The same isotopic ratios calculated for 1.5 Ga (the U-Pb zircon age of the rapakivi-like granites from adjacent Mazury Complex) range from 0.704583 to 0.705483. The corresponding eSr1500 values for the same rocks range from 25.5 to 39.0. The pronounced Eu anomaly which characterises the REE distribution in the anorthosite plagioclase is consistent with early crystallization from basic magma.

This work concerns the contemporary area of the Suwałki region. In 1784 there were Roman Catholic parishes: Bakałarzewo, Filipów, Jeleniewo, Przerośl, Raczki, Suwałki, Wiżajny and probably Wigry (Magdalenowo). There was also part of the parish Lubowo and then Kaletnik. The main objective of this study is to answer the question of what role the oldest parishes of the region played for the inhabitants of the Polish-Lithuanian and Prussian states and their for the country's security. An attempt was made to characterize the importance of the borderland in the Christianization activity. The first permanent settlement began here at the beginning of the 16th century. The oldest Roman Catholic parish is Bakałarzewo (1520). Between 1562 and 1570, the Filipów and Przerośl parishes were established. In 1599, the Raczki parish was established. The turn of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries is also the time when the Wiżajny parish was founded. In 1541, in the village of Dowspuda near Raczki, there was also an Orthodox chapel. The Camaldolese of Wigry played a major role here (from 1668). They built temples in: Wigry, Magdalenowo and Suwałki (after 1710). Between 1772 and 1785, the Jeleniewo parish was developed, and in the years 1790-1794 – the Kaletnik parish. At that time, parish priests played a huge role, as they were able to write and read as few. Catholic churches near the border with Prussia strengthened the security of the state and the religiousness of the Catholics from Prussia. Only in churches, old people could get to know paintings or sculptures. Associations were active at the churches. The parishes supported Polish patriotism. Belfries were announced by important events, and parish cemeteries made it possible to organize funerals. Only parishes helped the poor and ran schools.

Okupacyjno-wojenna historia Suwałk i Suwalszczyzny kojarzona jest wyłącznie z agresją niemiecką i późniejszą przynależnością do III Rzeszy. Pierwotnie owe terytorium znalazło się jednak pod okupacją sowiecką. Tak stanowił pakt Ribbentrop-Mołotow z 23 VIII 1939 r. Artykuł opisuje działania militarne strony sowieckiej oraz postawy miejscowej ludności, zróżnicowanej pod względem etnicznym i konfesyjnym. W opisywanym regionie na początku wojny nie dochodziło do konfliktów charakterystycznych dla polskich Kresów Wschodnich, co umożliwia przeprowadzenie badań bez późniejszych naleciałości spowodowanych długotrwałą okupacją sowiecką. 
The war and occupation history of Suwałki and Suwałki region is associated almost exclusively with the German aggression and the later annexation of this territory to the Third Reich. Initially, however, the area was under the Soviet occupation, according to the provisions of the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact of 23 August 1939. The article describes military operations of the Soviets and attitudes of the local population, diverse both in terms of ethnicity and religion. At the beginning of the war there were no conflicts in the analysed region, characteristic of the Polish Eastern Frontiers, which allows us to conduct research with no later influences resulting from the long Soviet occupation.

Polska po 1990 roku zderzyła się z ze zjawiskiem bezrobocia, które przed okresem transformacji przyjmowało formę ukrytą w przedsiębiorstwach. Najwyższą stopę odnotowano na dwóch obszarach: byłym województwie suwalskim i olsztyńskim. Szczegółowej analizie poddano obszar byłego województwa suwalskiego, leżącego w szczególnym obszarze Polski wschodniej. W latach 1990-2015 region ten zmagał się z wysoką stopą bezrobocia spowodowaną słabym uprzemysłowieniem regionu. Powołanie specjalnej strefy ekonomicznej oraz wejście Polski do Unii Europejskiej przyczyniło się do spadku bezrobocia. Dalsza tendencja spadkowa spowodować może skutek negatywny, czyli brak ludzi do pracy w najbliższych latach
After 1990, Poland experienced the phenomenon of unemployment which, before the transformation period, had remained hidden in business. The highest level was noticed in two regions: former Suwałki and Olsztyn administration regions. The Suwałki region, situated in eastern Poland with its specific characteristics, has been subject to detailed analysis. Between 1990-2015 the region faced the high unemployment rate as a consequence of its poor industrialization. However, developing a special economic zone and Poland’s accession to the European Union resulted in the decrease of unemployment. A further falling tendency might have a negative consequence, insufficient labour force

12 stycznia 1976 roku władze nowo utworzonego województwa suwalskiego podjęły uchwałę o powołaniu Suwalskiego Parku Krajobrazowego. Interesujące jest, że park krajobrazowy, jako forma ochrony przyrody, nie funkcjonował w ówczesnym prawodawstwie. Dopiero ustawa o ochronie przyrody z 1991 roku usankcjonowała tę formę. Podstawową przyczyną stan prawnego, który wyprzedzał zapisy ustawowe, była niewątpliwie determinacja organizacji i służb ochrony przyrody, dążących do ochrony jednego z najbardziej unikatowych zakątków Polski. Pierwsze wnioski o ochronę fragmentu północnej Suwalszczyzny pojawiły się pod koniec lat pięćdziesiątych XX wieku niemal równolegle z rozpoczęciem badań geologicznych bogatych złóż rud tytanomagnetytowych masywu suwalskiego. Poniższy materiał jest próbą odtworzenia historii tworzenia pierwszego parku krajobrazowego w Polsce na tle prac planistycznych okręgu górniczego „Krzemionka I".
On January 12,h 1976, the administration of newly formed Suwałki Voivodeship adopted a resolution on creating Suwalski Landscape Park. It’s worth to mention a landscape park as a from of wildlife protection didn't exist in law those days. It was sanctioned in Nature Conservation Act later in!991. Motivation for local laws exceeding formal sanctioning w determination of organizations and wildlife conservation officials to protect one of the most unique regions in Poland. First initiatives to protect part of Northern Suwałki Region came up in łate fifties of XXth century, about the same ti when geological examination of suwalski massif's rich titano-magnetite ores was initiated. The aim of this work is reconstruction of how the first landscape park in Poland has been estabilished alongside flourishing plans to create a mining region „Krzemionka 1".

The article describes problem of the Suwalki gap, its political and military determinants and its significance for both the Russian Federation and NATO. The author summarizes the military potential and capabilities of Russian Federation, Belarus, Poland and Lithuania in this area. The aim of this study is to show the strategic importance of this region to interested parties. Clashing the interests of states in this part of Europe may lead to conflicts and pose a threat to security, not only to these countries but also to others.

Opis:
The Udryń PIG 1 research borehole drilled in northeastern Poland (54°14’49”N, 23°03’29”E, 223 m a.s.l.) revealed a permafrost layer, at least 93 m thick, within the sedimentary succession below a depth of 357 m. The base of the permafrost has not been reached at 450 m depth, where the drilling stopped, so its total present thickness remains unknown. The relict permafrost, unexpected in this part of Central Europe, is in the ice-water transition phase at a temperature slightly below the 0°C. Analysis of geophysical and hydrogeological data indicates the possibility of preserving the permafrost in the central part of sedimentary cover of the Suwałki Anorthosite Massif over an area of probably 50 km2. Preliminary results of geothermal modelling indicate maximum palaeothickness of permafrost at the end of the Last Glacial Maximum of probably ~600 m. The development of such a thick permafrost results both from a very low average annual temperature in the Weichselian Glaciation and a very low terrestrial heat flow density. It is very probable that similar zones of deep relict permafrost occurrences, undetected so far, may exist in other areas of the Precambrian Platform not only in Poland, but also in the neighbouring countries.

Intensywny rozwój infrastruktury drogowej, jaki ma miejsce od dłuższego czasu w Polsce, skłania inwestorów do poszukiwania nowych rozwiązań, w tym w szczególności wykorzystania zasobów zgodnie z duchem zrównoważonego rozwoju. Z tego powodu beton cementowy coraz częściej jest wybierany jako materiał stosowany do budowy nawierzchni drogowych w naszym kraju. Ma to miejsce zarówno na drogach gminnych, jak również na drogach ekspresowych i autostradach. Sytuacja taka powoduje, że wykonawcy w Polsce mają coraz większe doświadczenie w realizacji dróg o nawierzchni betonowej z odkrytym kruszywem, a więc technologii, która jest bardzo wrażliwa na błędy i usterki wykonawstwa. Od nawierzchni betonowych oczekuje się przede wszystkim długiego okresu przydatności eksploatacyjnej, jak również jak najmniejszych uszkodzeń na przestrzeni lat eksploatacji. W publikacji przedstawiono wybrane problemy związane z budową obwodnicy miasta Suwałki w ciągu drogi ekspresowej S61. Przedstawiono proces przygotowania do robót i realizacji nawierzchni w technologii betonu cementowego z odkrytym kruszywem, wskazując również na trudności, jakie napotkano w trakcie robót budowlanych.
Intensive development of road infrastructure which has been observed for a long time in Poland prompts investors to seek new solutions and use resources in line with the spirit of sustainable development. For this reason, cement concretes are more and more often chosen as a material used for road construction in our country. Starting from municipal roads ending on expressways and highways. This fact causes that contractors in Poland have more and more experience in the implementation of roads with a concrete surface with exposed aggregate, and therefore technology, which is very sensitive to even the smallest errors. In particular, longevity and failure-free operation over many years of use are expected from concrete surfaces. Meeting such high expectations is possible while maintaining the technological regime at every stage of implementation work and what is worth emphasizing the partnership approach of all entities involved in the implementation of the undertaking. The publication presents the construction of the bypass of the city of Suwałki along the S61 expressway. The author presented the entire process of preparation for works and implementation of the surface in the cement concrete technology with the exposed aggregate indicating the significant difficulties encountered during the construction works.
