Paul Ricoeur uncovered the creative aspect of language in his theory of metaphor. The metaphor is a special combination of words that as a clash of distant semantic fields forces the reader to interpret the sentence in a new way and see things in a new light. It is a process in which the imagination plays an important role. Ricoeur compares the metaphor to the Kantian schema which is a procedure to provide an image to a concept. The image helps in the process of assimilating distant elements and thus to achieve a new interpretation. To change perspective the suspension of reference (imaginary neutralization) is also needed. The aim of this essay is to analyze the imaginative functions which are operative in the metaphor and look for an answer to the question about the role of the imagination as a productive power as well as a power of internal intuitions.

French philosopher Paul Ricoeur (1913-2005) is best known as the co-founder of modern hermeneutics. Under this framework, he developed a practical philosophy (theory of action). Its applications can be found in his attitude to public and civic issues (e.g. expressed in skepticism to the course of events in May 1968 or protests against the worsening social inequalities), where there was always a religious theme, resulting from a strong Christian faith rooted in the Protestant profile. Ricoeur differentiated politics as classically understood politics as a space for joint action within a framework of policies rather than more contemporary views, where it is associated with gaining and securing power. He pointed to the need for dialogue and negotiations between the government and the social partners, trade unions and political adversaries. Political activity becomes similar to practical wisdom.

Autorka artykułu zestawia ze sobą dwie próby przeciwstawienia się koncepcji Sein zum Tode Heideggera (przeżycie Jacquesa Derridy oraz „żyć aż do śmierci” Paula Ricoeura). Ich pozorna bliskość (deklarowana przez Ricoeura) jest inspiracją do dyskusji na temat pozytywności Derridiańskiej dekonstrukcji. Ricoeurowskie rozumienie życia wydaje się uniemożliwiać zrozumienie dekonstrukcji jako wierności innemu nie w jego tożsamości, lecz różnicy.

The aim of this paper is to present Ricœur’s and Lé vinas’s approach to the concept of selfhood (French soi) as a response to the dispute over subjectivity which was initiated by the critics of modern tradition of the absolutization of Cartesian cogito. The debate on the notion of selfhood has not been closed yet. The author analyses two diff erent approaches to the problem. One appeals to the Hegelian dialectic, adjusting it to the formula “oneself as another” (discounting that part of the dialectical movement in which Hegel jumps to a vision of absolute knowledge). The other refers to the category of substitution. Both Ricœur and Lé vinas point to the Platonic opposition of the notions of “the Same” and “the Other.” Ricœur’s initial claim breaks with the established language of ontology. Moving beyond the circle of sameness-identity towards the dialectic of sameness- and selfhood-identity entails the transformation of the notion of otherness: it is no longer an antonym of “same,” but it is a kind of otherness that is constitutive of selfhood.

W artykule zostają porównane pojęcia gry i prawdy w koncepcji Hansa-Georga Gadamera oraz pojęcia referencji i metafory u Paula Ricoeura. Najpierw autor skupia się na Gadamerze, który przedstawia istnienie dzieła sztuki jako grę. Następnie analizuje, w jaki sposób dzieła literackie mogą służyć za nośniki prawdy i czym ta prawda w kontekście dzieła literackiego jest. Po zakończeniu opisu koncepcji Gadamera autor przechodzi do analizy wybranych wątków z teorii hermeneutycznej Ricoeura. Punktem wyjścia jest zagadnienie różnych rodzajów referencji w tekstach. W powiązaniu z referencją poetycką autor opisuje charakterystyczną cechę tekstów poetyckich – metaforę. Kończąca artykuł część porównawcza ma na celu ukazanie relacji między tymi pojęciami w kontekście hermeneutyki obu filozofów.
The article compares the concepts of play and truth in the philosophy of Hans-Georg Gadamer with the concepts of reference and metaphor in the philosophy of Paul Ricoeur. The author begins by focusing on Gadamer, who presents the existence of artwork as a game. Then, the author analyzes how literary works can serve as carriers of truth and what this truth means in the context of literature. After describing Gadamer’s concepts, the author moves on to the analysis of selected themes from Ricoeur’s hermeneutical theory. The starting point is the issue of different types of reference in texts. In connection with poetic reference, the author describes the characteristic feature of poetic texts - metaphor. The final comparative section of the article seeks to uncover the connections between these concepts within the framework of both philosophers’ hermeneutics.

Acting and suffering subjectivity makes a grand sujet in Ricoeur's philosophy. In his Time and Narrative Ricoeur created the notion of narrative identity which is an individual internalized and evolving life strory. The narrative alone might define the “who”. Whoever lives and exists, suffers. Ricoeur metaphorically defined life as a cloth. We can add, Wiercinski continues, that this cloth is woven with pain. It is pain which makes the cloth, and, at the same time, it is also a joy of the human condition. As humans, we are called to wear this cloth as well as to understand what does it mean - from the hermeneutic perspective.

Woolf’s maturing as a writer was deeply influenced by her traumatic experiences in childhood, the (in)capacitating states of mental instability, as well as her proto-feminist convictions. Long before Barthes, she toppled the traditional position of the author, and her literary enshrinement of “the other reality” reached unity with the world rather than individuality. This article ponders Woolf’s creative impulse and investigates her autobiographical writings to show the import of their impact on her fiction, which, as Woolfian scholarship suggests, can be viewed as autobiographical, too. I argue that philosophical hermeneutics sheds light on the self-portrait that emerges from Woolf’s autobiographical writings and offers a rewarding insight into her path of becoming an author. I assert that Paul Ricoeur’s philosophy of subjectivity, and, in particular, his notion of narrative identity provide a route to examine how Woolf discovers her writing voice. In light of his hermeneutics of the self, the dispersed elements of the narrative of life can be seen as a possibility of self-encounter. Woolf’s writings bespeak her gradually evolving self-knowledge and self-understanding, which come from the configuration of those separate “stories” into a meaningful whole. The article also interprets Woolf’s autobiographical writings through the prism of Michel Foucault’s reflection on discourse and subjectivity, indicating that her texts instantiate his assertion of the subject’s constant disappearance.

The aim of this article is to extract from Gadamer’s writings his view about understanding in the humanities and to confront the results of this research with analyses of other interpreters. The key to the epistemology of the humanities is the ontology of its subject and, above all, its object. The former has been characterized by its finiteness, historicity and irremovable assumptionism of cognition. To the latter two basic features have been ascribed: dynamism (it exists only as the motion of thinking) and indefiniteness in such, which is connected with the fact that it is not given, but created by the subject. In the humanities understood in such a way we can only have the existential, and not classic, concept of truth. The very humanistic activity is more about creation than cognition.

The article is devoted to one of the central problems of philosophy, which is a human identity, based on Ricoeur’s „philosophy of recognition”.
