Opis:
Mosques are Islamic places of worship where speech and music rituals are performed. Since two different languages are spoken there, mosques are described as bilingual spaces. Among studies on the complex acoustic structure of mosques there are only few studies on speech intelligibility and none on the bilingual characteristics of the mosque. Therefore, a comprehensive study has been carried out to evaluate the acoustic comfort of the contemporary Turkish mosques (CTM) over speech intelligibility of Turkish and Arabic languages. In the study the CTM model providing optimum acoustic conditions recommended in the literature is examined on speech intelligibility by applying acoustic simulation and auralisation techniques, as well as word recognition tests. As a result, the acoustic condition in the model is found insufficient in terms of speech intelligibility of both languages. Also, with the decrease of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), the Turkish intelligibility ratio is observed to decrease at least two times faster than the Arabic ones. This study is viewed as an outline for researchers to further study mosque acoustics in terms of speech intelligibility, and thus support the standardisation process of the acoustic comfort criteria for the mosques.

Opis:
The problem of observation space reordering is presented as a novel approach to pattern recognition based on non-parametric, combinatorial statistical tests. It consists in linearly ordering the elements of a discrete multi-dimensional observation space along a curve such that elements belonging to different similarity classes are as close to each other as possible, the similarity classes are mutually separated, and the length of the curve is kept to minimum. The problem is NP-difficult and it is shown how its approximate solution can be reached by a series of transformations improving the initial lexicographic linear order of a discrete observation space. Recommendations are formulated for linear order improvement leading to a pattern recognition algorithm based on serial statistical test.

Opis:
The usage of real-valued, local descriptors in computer vision applications is ofen constrained by their large memory requirements and long matching time. Typical approaches to the reduction of their vectors map the descriptor space to the Hamming space in which the obtained binary strings can be efficiently stored and compared. In contrary to such techniques, the approach proposed in this paper does not require a data-driven binarisation process, but can be seen as an extension of the floating-point descriptor computation pipeline with a step that allows turning it into a binary descriptor. In this step, binary tests are performed on values determined for pixel blocks from the described image patch. In the paper, the proposed approach is described and applied to two popular real-valued descriptors, SIFT and SURF. The paper also contains a comparison of the approach with state-of-the-art binarisation techniques and popular binary descriptors. The results demonstrate that the proposed representation for real-valued descriptors outperforms other methods on four demanding benchmark image datasets.

Opis:
The paper presents an approach to discrimination of textures in radiological images based on multi-aspect similarity measures composed of logical tests. There are formulated basis assumptions for similarity measures which can be composed by products of partial (single-aspect) similarity measures. On the basis of similarity measures -similarity classes are defined. Next, two types: strong and weak similarity measures are defined. It is shown that they make possible to define similarity measures based on quality objects properties as well as on their numerical parameters. As an example of application of the general concept discrimination of normal and ill (lesions affected) tissues is considered. It is illustrated by analysis of USG images of liver tissues for which morphological spectra and their statistical parameters have been calculated. It is shown that the differences between values of some pairs of corresponding parameters can be used to a construction of an effective algorithm of textures discrimination. This algorithm takes into consideration both, numerical features of the texture samples and some qualitative data concerning the patients. Conclusions are formulated at the end of the paper.
