Opis:
Intensive development of technologies, in particular of the spinotronics, nanotechnology, robotics, and ICT, shapes the new generation production systems. Their distinctive feature is the flexibility associated with production intelligence. It is required from all processes, including the production planning and control processes (PPCP). The article is of conceptual character. It was prepared based on literature research. It encompasses issues related to Next Generation Manufacturing Systems, including Intelligent Manufacturing Systems in particular, covering solutions for PPCP. The article was also built upon the results of research on the level of automation of Polish manufacturing enterprises. The research results in the development of general assumptions of an informatic management system for the transformation of PPCP for technologically advanced and organizational production systems. The system has a modular structure resulting from its functions, which include identifying the need for transformation, its goals and vision, planning, design, implementation and evaluation of transformation. It takes the technical, organizational, socio-psychological and economic aspects of transformation into account. Choosing the right solutions for PPCP purposes allows for flexible adaptation to the requirements and needs of the environment. Its essential part is the knowledge database, thanks to which it is possible to shape the system’s intelligence.

Traditionally the aggregate production plan helps in determining the inventory, production, and work-force, based on the demand forecasts without considering the productivity loss at a tactical level in supply chain planning. In this paper, we include the productivity loss into traditional aggregate production plan and the prescriptive analytics technique, linear programming, is used to solve this problem of practical interest in the domain of multifarious businesses and industries. In this study, we discussed two model variations of the aggregate production planning problem with and without productivity loss, i) fixed work-force, and ii) variable Work Force. The mathematical models were designated to be solved by using an open-source python pulp package in order to evaluate the impacts of the productivity loss on both the models. PuLP is an open-source modeling framework provided by the COIN-OR Foundation (Computational Infrastructure for Operations Research) for linear and integer Programing problems written in Python. The computational results indicate that the productivity loss has direct impact on the workforce hiring and firing.

Major manufactures are moving towards a sustainability goal. This paper introduces the results of collaboration with the leading company in the packaging and advertising industry in Germany and Poland. The problem addresses the manufacturing planning problem in terms of minimizing the total cost of production. The challenge was to bring a new production planning method into cardboard manufacturing and paper processing which minimizes waste, improves the return of expenses, and automates daily processes heavily dependent on the production planners’ experience. The authors developed a module that minimizes the total cost, which reduces the overproduction and is used by the company’s manufacturing planning team. The proposed approach incorporates planning allowances rules to compromise the manufacturing requirements and production cost minimization.

We present a Closed Loop Supply Chain (CLSC) model that supports a production planning (PP) process. CLSC model is based on CLSC framework model which consists of four main centers: collection, recovery center, distribution and disposal centers. These logistics parts support main production lines. Some quantity of the products is recovered and the factories don’t need to spend money for production. This is a simple cost reduction process. In CLSC literature one can hardly meet the models of production planning processes supported by CLSC. Important problem with that models is the computational complexity when one wants to prepare production plans for more than one time period. This is connected with a number of the numerical variables of the CLSC and PP models which are usually Integer Programming models solved with Branch & Bound algorithms. We present some modifications of the widely known and used constraints in the CLSC models to optimize solving process. All the experiments were conducted with the CPLEX solver.

Opis:
Underestimating the duration of the production process is one of the basic factors determining the occurrence of delays in the duration of individual operations included in the production process. Occurrence of underestimation of production time brings many negative effects, which include, among others: underestimation of the company's production capacity, accumulation of intermediate stocks, impeded planning of the production process (scheduling of the production process) and increase of production costs. The problem of erroneous estimation of the duration of the production process is most often found in production plants specializing in serial or mass production, implemented in a parallel or series-parallel system. The basic causes that underestimate the duration of the production process include errors in production scheduling, incorrect determination of durations of individual operations carried out as part of the analyzed production process, complexity of production operations and employment structure. The occurrence of delays in the production process can also be affected by accident events that generate underestimation and costs for the enterprise (including social and economic costs). In many cases, many algorithms are used to reduce underestimation and optimization and scheduling of the entire production process. The publication presents an analysis of the production process in which the duration of the production process is underestimated, taking into account the employment structure in the manufacturing company. The analyzes allow to determine the level of underestimation of operations of the production process depending on the form of employment (steel workers – employed under a contract of employment in the production plant, and temporary workers employed by temporary work agencies), identification of the reasons for the underestimation of individual production positions and the length of their time occurrence.

The article is to present the application of genetic algorithm in production scheduling in a production company. In the research work the assumptions of the methodology were described and the operation of the proposed genetic algorithm was presented in details. Genetic algorithms are useful in complex large scale combinatorial optimisation tasks and in the engineering tasks with numerous limitations in the production engineering. Moreover, they are more reliable than the existing direct search algorithms. The research is focused on the effectivity improvement and on the methodology of scheduling of a manufacturing cell work. The genetic algorithm used in the work appeared to be robust and fast in finding accurate solutions. It was shown by experiment that using this method enables obtaining schedules suitable for a model. It gives a group of solutions that are at least as good as those created by the heuristic rules.

Producing companies are confronted with a growing number of product ramp-ups, since product life cycles are decreasing and product diversity is increasing. Production Planning and Control (PPC) of ramp-up products is particularly challenging, as there is a significant lack of reliable experienced data. The information deficit is exceptionally high for the first step of PPC process, namely Production Program Planning (PPP). The paper in hand proposes an innovative approach of cybernetic PPP that enables companies with numerous ramp-ups to design reliable and fast PPP processes that can react highly adaptable on unpredictable environmental disturbances. The Viable System Model (VSM) is used as frame of reference for the design of PPP processes in line with principles from management cybernetics.

By discretising the stochastic demand, a deterministic nonlinear programming formulation is developed. Then, a hybrid simulation-optimisation heuristic that capitalises on the nature of the problem is designed. The outcome is an evaluation problem that is efficiently solved using a spreadsheet model. The main contribution of the paper is providing production managers with a tractable formulation of the production planning problem in a stochastic environment and an efficient solution scheme. A key benefit of this approach is that it provides quick near-optimal solutions without requiring in-depth knowledge or significant investments in optimisation techniques and software.

Opis:
Value Stream Mapping has been a key Lean tool since its publication in 1988, offering a strategic view on the reconfiguration of an organization’s processes to reduce overall lead time. It has since been used in many different domains beyond (car) manufacturing. However, the potential offered by its concise representation of both material flow and its controlling information flow seems to have been largely underused. Most literature reports on VSM in the context of waste detection and local improvements. VSM also supports redesigning the material flow (even on a supply chain level) towards (pure) pull systems. However, it fails to adequately give guidance on how to gradually evolve towards this ultimate ideal state. This paper wants to offer a significant contribution to practitioners on how to use VSM to bridge this gap. Another key challenge that remains largely unpublished is how to adapt the planning systems accordingly at each reconfiguration of the material flow. This paper presents extensions to the basic VSM tool to meet these challenges. It includes a more comprehensive 5-level hierarchy that allows to position most lean flow-related techniques. It also extends the basic “door-to-door” VSM with new symbols to accommodate these techniques into the map. Finally, it introduces a new set of 13 questions to support redesigning not only the material flow, but also the information flow. The resulting richer future state maps better support the gradual evolution towards a leaner future shop floor, as illustrated with an example.

Opis:
Constraint programming (CP) is an emergent software technology for declarative description and effective solving of large combinatorial problems especially in areas of integrated production planning. In that context, the CP can be considered as a well-suited framework for development of decision making software supporting small and medium size enterprises in the course of Production Process Planning (PPP). The problem considered regards of finding of computationally effective approach aimed at scheduling of a new project subject to constraints imposed by a multi–project environment. In other words, we are looking for an answer whether a given production order specified by its cost and completion time can be accepted in a given manufacturing system specified by available production capability, i.e., the time-constrained resources availability. The problem belongs to a class of multi-mode case project scheduling problems, where the problem of finding a feasible solution is NPcomplete. The aim of the paper is to present the CP modeling framework as well as to illustrate its application to decision making in the case of a new production order evaluation. So, the contribution emphasizes benefits derived from CPbased DSS and focuses on constraint satisfaction driven decision-making rather than on an optimal solution searching.

Opis:
Concurrent execution of work orders in the small and medium size enterprises (SME) imposes a necessity to consider many control problems concerning systems of repetitive concurrent manufacturing processes using common resources in mutual exclusion. In many cases a production system with a given structure of the processes resource requests can be seen as composed of subsystems with n cyclic processes sharing one resource. For given sets of possible values of the processes operation execution times a problem of finding schedules guaranteeing that no process waits for access to the common resources is considered. In particular for the assigned times of the operations execution a subproblem of finding all possible starting times of work orders execution for which waiting-free schedules exist has been formulated as a constraint programming (CP) problem. The starting times derived can be used as an alternative starting times of work orders execution in case of their possible delays. A state space of the problem’s solutions has been reduced using constraints based on the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of a waiting-free n-process steady-state schedule. An illustrative example of Mozart-based software application to the solution of constraint logic programming problem considered has been presented.
