    The paper focuses on the modernist psychological novel as a genre that dramatizes the radical transformations of spatial and temporal categories of the time. The genre is often identified with the narrative experiments of stream of consciousness, which represent the mind in and through time. Yet an equally important inheritance of the generic experiments is the spatialization of the mind — understood in the context of the spatial conception of human subjectivity and in terms of the spatial character of inner reality. The paper argues that the most vivid spatialization of the mind is evident in the portrayal of schizophrenic experience and demonstrates the thesis in the analyses of two novels — Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and Samuel Beckett’s Murphy.

    The purpose of the article is to analyse and interpret Władysław Stanisław Reymont’s novelistic sketch entitled The Dreamer. The article opens with background information on the socio-cultural context of the modernist period of Young Poland (Młoda Polska), the transformations of its novels and its psychological interests. In the next part, the author offers a short presentation of Reymont’s literary output, which is followed by a detailed analysis of the main protagonist’s behaviour with regard to the symptoms of his mental disintegration (dereism, dysphoria, depersonalisation).
    Celem artykułu jest analiza i interpretacja szkicu powieściowego Marzyciel Władysława Stanisława Reymonta. Na początku scharakteryzowany został kontekst społeczno-kulturowy Młodej Polski z uwzględnieniem przemian powieści młodopolskiej i jej zainteresowań psychologicznych. Następnie krótko omówiona została twórczość Reymonta. W dalszej części następuje dokładna analiza zachowania tytułowego bohatera pod kątem obecności w nim przejawów dezintegracji psychicznej (dereizm, dysforia, depersonalizacja).

    The article discusses the problem of authenticity in the narrative prose written by Anton Holban, a Ro-manian author of the interwar period. Holban, one of the most innovative writers of his time, contributed to the development of the psychological novel. His work has been appreciated by literary critics from the very beginning. We consider the concept of authenticity to be one of the most important in his novels. Strongly autobiographical, they reflect man’s desperate efforts, through insightful and meticulous analysis, to discover the truth about himself and the world about him. However, absolute authenticity proves impossible to achieve, both for the narrator and the writer himself.

    The article presents young Żeromski’s fascination with the writings of Paul Bourget. Basing on the Polish writer’s journal entries concerned with Une crime d’amour and Mensonges one can trace an ambivalent attitude towards those psychological novels developed in the late 1880s. By young Żeromski’s standards Bourget falls behind other masters of prose he admires at the time, namely Turgenev and Dostoyevsky. Still, despite Bourget’s didacticism, the aspiring youth cannot refrain from fascination for the descriptions of characters, whose emotions so often so clearly mirror his own. There are at least a few plots (an aspiring writer’s ambitions in the great world, the memory of a love lost etc.) which could have caught Żeromski’s attention as valid attempts to capture experiences known to him as well. It is therefore the identification process that stands in the way of condemning the moralistic ambitions of Bourget and allows the French writer’s works to remain an important point of reference for the Polish witer’s upcoming writing endeavors.

    The paper discusses the reception of Olga Tokarczuk’s works after the author received the Nobel Prize in Literature. It addresses the issue of politicisation of literature – the Nobel Prize winner’s novels are read through the angle of her left-wing views, with less importance attributed to the quality of the works as such. The paper answers the question as to what the Nobel Prize winner enchanted the Swedish Academy with, explains how Tokarczuk structures her novels and what makes them stand out (the psychological approach), and also discusses the author’s view on the role of literature in today’s world.

    The paper focuses on the song as a syncretic, literary-musical genre. The appearance of song quotes in a novel (Cudzoziemka by Maria Kuncewiczowa) represents an interesting case, which may nevertheless be examined from purely literary perspective. However, a more profound interdisciplinary reading, which combines the elements of analysis of a piece of prose and a piece of music, enables a better interpretation of this particular motif in the novel.

    Opublikowana w roku 1933 powieść Zazdrość i medycyna Michała Choromańskiego wyłamuje się zdecydowanie z dominującej w prozie dwudziestolecia międzywojennego konwencji realizmu psychologicznego wykorzystującego zdobycze psychologii behawioralnej. Dzieło Choromańskiego to nowatorski eksperyment kompozycyjny i myślowy; świat przedstawiony w Zazdrości i medycynie przypomina psychotyczną malignę czy oniryczną wizję. Całość powieści skłania do badań interdyscyplinarnych z wykorzystaniem np. psychoanalizy Sigmunda Freuda, metody psychokrytycznej Charles’a Maurona, współczesnej psychologii procesu twórczego i tych metodologii badań psychologicznych, które akceptuje i niekiedy wykorzystuje współczesne literaturoznawstwo. Powieść Choromańskiego uchodzi za najbardziej wnikliwe, merytoryczne studium zazdrości w literaturze międzywojnia.
    Id, ego and superego deficit in a psychological image of the protagonists of ″Jealousy and Medicine″ by Michał Choromański Jealousy and Medicine – a novel by Michał Choromański, published in 1933, evidently breaks out of the convention of psychological realism thriving on the achievements of behavioural psychology, dominant in the interwar period. Choromański’s work is an innovatory experiment on composition and thought; the world shown in the novel resembles a psychotic maligna or oneiric vision. The whole novel prompts interdisciplinary research using psychoanalysis of Sigismund Freud, Charles Mauron’s psychocritical method, being a transformation of classical Freudian psychoanalysis (with Otto Rank’s modifications), contemporary psychology of a creative process and the methodologies of psychological research which are accepted and occasionally used by contemporary literary studies. Choromański’s novel is deemed the most discerning studium of jealousy in interwar literature.

    Le Disciple (The Disciple) is Paul Bourget’s main work. The book, which was published in 1889, was preceded by a psychological novel, Mensonges (A Living Lie), published in 1887, and followed by a thesis novel, L’Étape, published in 1902, in which this member of the French Academy prefigured and reconfigured the character of the teacher and that of the student. His model teaching figures are the edifying character of the priest-teacher or of the Christian teacher, who support the values of traditional Catholic education, which differ from those of secular teachers. The fictional outline of the characters as well as the author’s diaries shed light on the evolution of the author’s theories about teaching, which were linked to the Catholic faith,  showing how his fictional and personal writings developed in parallel.
    Le Disciple est l’œuvre centrale de Paul Bourget. Cet ouvrage de 1889 est précédé par un roman psychologique Mensonges (1887) et suivi par un roman à thèse L’Étape (1902), dans lesquels l’académicien préfigure et reconfigure les personnages du professeur et de l’élève. Son modèle de maître se dessine dans des figures de prêtre-enseignant ou de professeur chrétien dans la défense des valeurs de l’éducation catholique traditionnaliste contrastant avec celles de professeurs laïcs. Les schémas fictionnels des personnages comme les écrits diaristes de l’auteur permettent d’éclairer l’élaboration des thèses de l’auteur sur l’enseignement lié à la foi catholique, dans un cheminement parallèle d’écriture romanesque et intime.

    Eugenii Żmijewskiej, żyjącej na przełomie XIX i XX wieku pisarki i publicystki, próżno szukać w wielotomowych słownikach biograficznych. Polski Słownik Biograficzny nie zawiera tomu z ostatnią literą polskiego alfabetu, hasła „Eugenia Żmijewska” nie ma także w żadnym z tomów Bibliografii Literatury Polskiej (tzw. Nowym Korbucie) ani w serii Obraz literatury polskiej XIX i XX wieku. Niewielkie wpisy znajduję jednak w Starym Korbucie1 z 1931 roku oraz w drugim tomie encyklopedycznej Literatury Polskiej2 i w przewodniku Pisarski współczesne3 – publikacjach wydanych pod koniec XX wieku. Dwa pierwsze hasła informują o datach i miejscach urodzenia i śmierci pisarki (ur. ok. 1865, Ukraina – zm. 1923, Warszawa), wymieniają jej najważniejsze utwory (m.in. trylogię: Płomyk, Dola, Serduszko) i zaznaczają główny obszar zainteresowań (problemy emancypacji kobiet), a także opisują jej działalność dziennikarską, związaną z pracą redakcyjną i publicystyczną m. in. w „Słowie”, „Kurierze Polskim”, „Bluszczu”. Spełniając swoją funkcję informacyjną, nie przedstawiają szczegółowo tematyki poruszanej przez Żmijewską ani nie dokonują oceny jej twórczości. Taką próbę podejmuje Grażyna Borkowska w krótkim omówieniu wymienionej trylogii. Badaczka zauważyła, że proza Żmijewskiej wpisuje się w popularny na początku XX wieku nurt powieści o dojrzewaniu kobiety, a autorka Młodych akcentuje także wątki dotyczące dojrzewania psychoseksualnego. Wyeksponowanie tego aspektu dojrzewania stanowi o oryginalności Żmijewskiej i jej wyczuciu modernistycznych konwencji, choć pisarka nie używa takich określeń, jak erotyczne, seksualne, cielesne, intymne4. Nie zmienia to faktu, że jej talent literacki postrzegany był w niejednoznaczny sposób. W ocenie wartości artystycznej trylogii Żmijewskiej Borkowska posługuje się wypowiedzią Elizy Orzeszkowej, która w liście do Tadeusza Bochwica przyznała, że na autorkę Płomyka szkoda „czasu i atłasu”5. Co ciekawe, Orzeszkowa w Przedmowie do drugiego wydania Doli z 1910 roku zaprzecza swojej wypowiedzi, pisząc o Żmijewskiej jako o „utalentowanej autorce”6. Podobną opinię wyraziła kilka lat wcześniej, oceniając Płomyka. W liście do Żmijewskiej z 25 maja 1904 roku pisała o rzadkim wyrazie artystycznym, który został nadany historii Doli7. Być może te rozbieżności w postrzeganiu talentu młodszej koleżanki po piórze wynikały z ostrożności doświadczonej pisarki, jej kultury i taktu – nie chciała urazić Żmijewskiej ani zrazić jej do dalszych prób literackich. Być może jednak Orzeszkowa uznała, że Dola jest słabszą powieścią niż pierwsza część trylogii.

    Polska powieść kryminalna, szczególnie powstająca po roku 1989, wywołuje co najmniej dwa pytania badawcze. Pierwsze o chronologię literatury polskiej, a zarazem o uzależnienie jej rozwoju od przemian politycznych. Drugie o to, czy faktycznie zmiany takie miały (bądź mają) wpływ na kwestie np. formalne związane z kształtem tejże literatury. Zmiany polityczne mogły zapewne wpłynąć na podejmowanie tematów dotąd niemożliwych do opisu. Niniejsze studium ma na celu opis oraz analizę polskiej powieści kryminalnej z nieco innej perspektywy, a mianowicie opisu jej jako pewnego obiektu w znaczeniu, jaki nadał temu pojęciu Nicolai Hartmann. Stąd kwestie chronologiczne nie odegrają tu większej roli; będą traktowane jako pewien parametr pomocniczy. Natomiast artykuł podkreśla znaczenie tezy, że powieść kryminalna staje się, właśnie po roku 1989, powieścią o charakterze obyczajowo-psychologicznym. Także coraz silniej przejawia się w niej tendencja do czegoś, co sami autorzy określają jako „komedia kryminalna”. Artykuł zawiera zatem zarysowanie problemu badawczego (dzieło literackie jako obiekt), zaś główna teza to niezależność kwestii formalnych od problematyki przemian politycznych. Przyjęte w artykule metody badawcze to przede wszystkim opis obiektu, resp. dzieła literackiego i takich jego cech, jak: miejsce akcji (konkretne i opisane precyzyjnie bądź schematycznie), język protagonistów/antagonistów/narratora (konwencjonalny lub zindywidualizowany, z aluzjami intertekstowymi), postacie konwencjonalne lub zindywidualizowane, zagadka (najważniejsza, lub pretekstowa, czasem odkrywa drugie dno). Staram się wykazać, że zmiany polityczne wpłynęły na podejmowanie tematów dotąd niemożliwych do opisu. Natomiast same kwestie przemian politycznych na sferę kompozycji mają tylko wpływ głównie w warstwie językowej utworów.
    The Polish crime novel, especially written after 1989, raises several research questions. The first is a question about the chronology of Polish literature, and at the same time – the dependence of its development on political changes. Second –whether such changes actually had (or have) an impact on, for example, formalissues related to the shape of this literature. Perhaps the political changes could have influenced the taking up of topics that were previously impossible to describe. This study aims to describe and analyze the Polish detective novel from a slightly different perspective, namely to describe it as a certain object. Therefore, chronological issues will not play a major role here; will be treated as an auxiliary parameter. On the other hand, the article will emphasize the importance of the thesis that the crime novel becomes, just after 1989, a novel of a moral and psychological nature. It also shows a tendency towards something that the authors themselves describe as a “crime comedy”. Therefore, the article contains an outline of the research problem (a literary work as an object), and the main thesis is the independence of formal issues from the issues of political change; research methods are primarily a description of the object, resp. of a literary work and its features such as: the setting (specific and described precisely or schematically), the language of the protagonists/antagonists/narrator (conventional or individualized, with intertextual allusions), conventional or individualized characters, a riddle (the most important, pretext, reveals the second bottom). I try to show that political changes have influenced the taking up of topics that were previously impossible to describe. On the other hand, the very issues of political changes on the sphere of composition affect only the linguistic layer of the works.
