    The patriotic ideology of the nineteenth century portrayed women in a stereotypical way as either idealized Polish mothers or women knights. Only such social roles allowed them to appear in the public discourse. The article focuses on the figure of Narcyza Żmichowska, writer, poet and political activist. Both her views and life demonstrate that she did not fit the model of woman proposed in the national-patriarchal discourse but rather subverted it. By rejecting sacrifice and martyrdom, Żmichowska proposed a new feminine identity and a unique vision of patriotism.

    Artykuł analizuje, w jaki sposób norweskie instytucje edukacyjne, w szczególności przedszkola, przekazują idee i normy kulturowe odnoszące się do dzieciństwa. Podstawą artykułu są wyniki badań etnograficznych prowadzonych wśród Polek, mieszkających w Oslo i okolicach – nauczycielek przedszkolnych i (czasem jednocześnie) mam dzieci uczęszczających do przedszkoli. W szczególności interesują nas hierarchie i dyskursy projektu dzieciństwa, które są związane z rolą instytucji państwowych: w jaki sposób definiowane są cele przedszkoli w Norwegii, również w porównaniu do Polski, jakie wartości przekazywane są w praktyce w norweskich przedszkolach oraz co myślą o tym matki z Polski, których dzieci uczęszczają do norweskich przedszkoli. W końcowej części tekstu przyglądamy się jak przebiega komunikacja w kontekście przedszkola i jakie są tego konsekwencje.
    The article analyzes the ways Norwegian educational institutions, especially Kindergartens, transmit ideas and cultural norms regarding childhood. The article is based on empirical ethnographic research among Polish women residing in Oslo and vicinity, including Kindergarten teachers and mothers of preschool age students. In some instances, the women were both teachers and mothers of Kindergarten students. In particular, we focus on hierarchies and childhood discourses related to the role of public institutions in raising and education young children. We ask the following research questions: How is the role of Kindergarten defined in Norway? How does it differ from the role Kindergarten plays in Poland? What values are transmitted in Norwegian Kindergartens? What is the opinion of Polish mothers, whose children attend Norwegian Kindergartens, about these values? We also look at communication strategies between parents and teachers and analyze their consequences.

    This article examines how migration to Wales modifies Polish Catholic families’ religious practices. It focuses on how the First Communion ceremony is performed. Within the Polish migrant community I witnessed three distinct ways of arranging this. Some families travelled to Poland to their parish churches of origin. Of those who celebrated it in Wales, some did so in a Polish church, others in their children’s Catholic school’s church. These choices had different effects. Holding First Communion in Poland confirmed children’s Polish identity and home-country bonds. It exemplified both the fluidity of the families’ intra-European migration experience and the strength of transnational networking. Holding it in the local Polish parish reinforced both families’ and childrens’ identification as Polish Catholics. In the school’s church, it strengthened migrant families’ negotiations of belonging and their children’s integration into the Welsh locality. Mothers’ active involvement in all settings led some to contest Polish religious customs and revealed emerging identifications related to children’s wellbeing and belonging. Unlike arrangements traditional in Poland, families’ religious practices in Wales seem to have become more individual, less collective.

    The text describes the problems that were faced by single mothers seen through the prism of letters written to central government offices. The dramatic economic situation forced them to seek help from the highest authorities. As a result of social pressure, in 1974, Edward Gierek’s team established a child maintenance fund.

    W czasie popaździernikowej odwilży w polskiej prasie pojawiły się nowe tematy, dotyczące problemów życia społeczeństwa. Bohaterkami reportaży „Zwierciadła” były kobiety skrzywdzone i okaleczone nieszczęśliwą miłością, matki oddające dzieci pod opiekę państwa, dzieciobójczynie. Reportaże ujawniały nie tylko problemy kobiet, ale też ukazywały nietolerancję środowiska o skostniałych normach obyczajowych i brak skutecznego systemu pomocy samotnym matkom.
    During the post-October thaw, new topics appeared in the Polish press concerning the problems of the life of the society. The protagonists of the Zwierciadło reports were women hurt and mutilated by unhappy love, mothers putting their children under the protection of the state, and infanticide. Reports revealed not only women’s problems, but also showed intolerance of the environment with rigid social norms and the lack of an effective system to help single mothers.
