Opis:
The concept of capital is one of the most noticeable and at the same time the most unclear concepts organizing not only the field of social sciences, but also the public debate in Poland and in the world. The article analyses two ways of conceptualization of the capital rooted in political and neoclassical economy together with their sociological modifications. The aim of this short reconstruction is to present a complex relation between the economic capital and the social capital treated as moral capital. This ambiguity induces us to ask a question about the significance of shifting this concept from the field of economic analyses to the centre of sociological theories in the context of crisis and transformations of late capitalism.

In the era of mass currency pertaining to the Bourdesian concepts of cultural and social capital, the latter given in somewhat different renderings by a plethora of other authors, such as Putnam, Coleman and so on it is easy to forget what the true 'founding father', or 'mother', if you like of the entire 'capital' family was. Furthermore, the notion concerned, owing to its association to the economic, and in particular managerial practice and corporate governance, could be said to possess even greater importance than the two varieties of the supreme category mentioned above, all their -real or ostensible charm, apparently so attractive to the practitioners of the humanities and social sciences notwithstanding. However, the patience of the reader is kindly requested; the concept concerned will be tackled head-on in Part II of the present book while in the brief Part I the underlying theoretical and conceptual framework that shall be deployed in that analysis needs to be illuminated. And you know what? As opposed to some other authors who in similar circumstances tell the reader that she can, if she wants, skip this (purportedly hard to swallow and boring) theoretical considerations and skip to the core of the matter, which in this book is placed in Part II; as distinct thus to the majority of writers, the reader is not advised by the present author to skip the theoretical section, since absent these considerations, she is bound to have some difficulties in understanding or understanding in full the material in the remaining parts of the current work. Finally, being frank by default, so to speak, the undersigned must confess that there are certain more personal motivations behind the aformentioned recommendation, too; after all, parents worldwide commonly boast about their offspring and precisely such a relationship obtains between the current intellectual producer and the principal theoretical core of what is being put forward below.

In modern economic theories, human qualities are treated as autonomous production factors, which are called “human capital”. However, these theories provide no description of the relationship between human capital and the man who is its “bearer”, nor an explanation of the formation process of that capital. In the thesis, the author tries to justify it as follows: human qualities, including knowledge and skills, are an integral part of a human being, that is, they are involved in every human act. It is, therefore, wrong to analyse their economic significance in isolation from the whole structure of human activity. Through his or her action, man discovers the potential in things and relationships in the form of the possibility of using them for a particular purpose. Capital is thus realized by the human potential of things that form a system for transforming the world. In the first part of the article, a general description of human capital will be provided. In the second part, it will be criticized, while in the third part, there will be an attempt to show the proper relationship between man and capital from the perspective of personalism.

Purpose: The aim of the article is to examine the selected determinants of the expected rate of return on human capital. Methodology: We conducted an anonymous survey of expected salaries among the Accounting and Controlling students at the Cracow University of Economics, which provided a unique setting for the analysis. On the basis of collected data for the cost of living and the cost of professional education for every participant, we used the human capital model developed by Dobija to compute the perceived level of the human capital of each individual. Then, we compared the expected salaries with the perceived levels of human capital and computed expected rates of return on human capital. The following research methods are used: literature review, statistical tests, econometric modeling. Findings: On the sample of 754 respondents, we found that male students expect a higher rate of return on their human capital than female students, while older students expect a lower rate of return on human capital than younger students. Research limitations: Only one field of study was used to measure the determinants of the expected rate of return on human capital. Originality: We contribute to the salary expectations and human capital literature by identifying a significant gender salary expectations gap that holds even after considering individually assessed costs of living and professional education. Our findings are consistent with the well-known observation that women tend to expect lower salaries than men.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the employment-related real income gaps according to the education level reached by the working population during the 19972017 period. Using a panel methodology (pseudo-cohorts) it sums up that throughout recession, employment-related real income gaps by education level are wider, amplifying income inequality. During the economic boom the narrowing of the gap was due to the weak growth in skilled employment that did not manage to recover the pre-crisis values. This phenomenon is typical of a labour market structure with less skilled employment demand than its increasing supply. eTh employment-related diefrence in reduction of the real income gaps is exclusively reflected by a decline in employees from the highest education segment. The whole of tertiary education although with less intensity, replicates its trend. Not only educational credentials increase future employment-related income but also starting then not completing a university degree provides a significant disparity. Gender control shows a sharp drop in its determination.

Opis:
People should be at the centre of attention within knowledge-based economics. The leaders of each enterprise ought to focus on providing the best conditions for their employees’ professional and individual development and treat them with respect in terms of their dignity and needs. In contemporary literature two notions in perceiving people in organisations are noticeable. The first one treats employees as ‘resources’ which have to be properly used or as ‘capital’ that should bring a decent return on investment. The second notion derives a lot from Christian philosophy and sees the human as a person who treats work as a way to realize his calling and thus is able to take responsibility for the decisions made and actions taken. Acting in a constantly changing environment, people have to be flexible and able to take advantage of emerging opportunities and avoid threats. Within this process it is not a matter of being a human ‘being’ but rather becoming, which means that they are incessantly developing their potential. Although it is hard to predict human behaviour, the main task for managers is to lead in a way that will help employees use their full potential for both their own and the company’s benefit.

Aby ocenić sytuację Polski, dokonano przekrojowej analizy w latach 2013 i 2019. Uzyskane wyniki badań zostały omówione, a następnie przedstawiono wnioski.
Human capital is one of the most important factors influencing the economies of countries. This study analyzes human capital in European countries. 27 countries were examined in terms of factors reflecting the level of human capital, which were selected on the basis of substantive and formal criteria. There was a broader view of human capital both in terms of quantity and quality. Thus, the Ward’s method from the group of agglomeration methods was used in order to group countries in terms of the similarity of the researched resource. The human capital of Poland was also examined in comparison to other European countries and the changes that have occurred in recent years. In order to assess the situation of Poland, a cross-sectional analysis was made in 2013 and 2019. The obtained research results were discussed and the resulting conclusions were presented.

Opis:
The article deals with the study of the role of human and social capital in shaping the processes of regional development in Poland in 2002–2014. The study is aimed at seeking answers to the question whether and to what extent the characteristics of human and social capital development impeded or fostered the achievement of convergence in living standards (GDP per capita) in regional systems (NUTS-2). The following tools were used: multidimensional statistical exploratory analysis – the cluster analysis (Ward’s, k-means), linear ordering – as well as correlation analysis and measures of statistical dispersion. The analysis confirm a stronger link of the processes of economic development in Polish regions with human capital than in those with social capital, whereby there is evidence indicating that it was rather a higher level of the economic development that stimulated changes in human capital and the reverse impact of human capital on the change in the GDP per capita was weaker. When it comes to the educational component of human capital, it can be assumed that this component of human capital could have had a more polarizing than converging impact. The social capital did not mitigate nor strengthen the polarizing impact of human capital. There was, therefore, no confirmation to the hypothesis that intangible factors – human and social capitals – contributed to the convergence in living standards among regions in Poland in 2002–2014.

Spośród negatywnych wskaźników kapitału ludzkiego należy odnotować dużą spadkową dynamikę liczby ludności zarówno w kraju, jak i we wszystkich okręgach Litwy.
The analysis of indicators of human capital in Lithuania shows that the biggest changes recorded in the discussed period were undergone by the following indicators: the percentage of people with higher education, the number of full-time students per 1,000 residents (employees), the number of employees in R&D per 1000 inhabitants (employees), the number of infant deaths per 1000 live births and the distance of Lithuania’s employment structure from the structure of the EU 15. Among the negative indicators of human capital downward trends in the population sizes both in the country and in all counties of Lithuania should be recorded. In the analysis of spatial differentiation between counties of Lithuania it was stated that the best indicators of human capital were shown by Vilnius and Kaunas Counties. In the analyzed period, these districts showed the highest positive dynamics of indicators of human capital. Such human capital indicators as number of employees in R&D sector, full-time students and academics presented the biggest spatial heterogeneity. The smallest regional variations were observed among the tested indicators for the number of infant deaths per 1,000 live births and the proportion of economically active people with secondary vocational education as well as a similar indicator for the percentage of employed people with secondary vocational education. Several counties of Lithuania had very poor results of the analyzed measures of human capital. This primarily refers to Tauragė and Marijampolė Conties. They also had the weakest results concerning dynamics of changes of indicators of human capital.
