Parenthood used to be and in fact still is identified mostly with motherhood, not only in common thinking, but also in interdisciplinary studies. Until quite recently the main areas of reflection and discussion concerning parenthood were: the maternal instinct, maternity leave, maternal love and maternal bond. However, a change has been observed within the last decade. Now, the term fatherhood or the „new” fatherhood is becoming the subject of studies and analyses within the family studies (although it must be noted that the main focus is still on motherhood). The subject of fatherhood has been presented from the point of view of the evolution of fatherhood, the reasons of the crisis of fatherhood, and the characteristic of the „new” fatherhood. This article discusses the „new” (engaged) fatherhood as a currently promoted vision of the father role model.

Z jednej strony od mężczyzn wymaga się większego zainteresowania dzieckiem, większego wkładu czasowego i zadaniowego w jego rozwój i wychowanie, ale niezmiennie od mężczyzny oczekuje się jednocześnie, że nadal będzie on mocną głową rodziny, która przede wszystkim zadba o bezpieczeństwo swojej rodziny – szczególnie w zakresie finansowym. Zatem z jednej strony oczekuje się, że będzie on więcej w domu, z żoną, z dzieckiem, będzie partycypował w domowych obowiązkach, jednak nie zdejmuje to z niego odpowiedzialności za utrzymanie rodziny. Czy nowym oczekiwaniom, wydającym się trochę ponad miarę i możliwości, nowy ojciec podoła? Czy zmiany i współczesna figura ojca jest tą, w której określana na nowo tożsamość mężczyzny znajdzie odbicie i możliwość realizacji? Z pewnością na odpowiedź należy jeszcze poczekać, jednak, uzasadnionym wydaje się pytanie jakie stawia Z. Melosik, czy w obliczu wszystkich zmian w osobie, psychice, medykalizacji oraz feminizacji ciała męskiego „(…) mężczyzna to jest jeszcze mężczyzna?” (Z. Melosik, Kryzys męskości w kulturze współczesnej, Kraków: Oficyna Wydawnicza Impuls 2006, pp. 22.).
On the one hand, the man is supposed to show greater interest in the childcare, spend much more time with his offspring and put more effort in its education and upbringing. On the other, the very same man is simultaneously obliged to be the head of the family and take care of its safety, especially as far as money is concerned. Therefore, the man is expected to spend more time at home with his wife and children, participate in all housework, and be still responsible for the family's financial security. Would the new father be able to manage these new expectations, which seem a little bit to excess? Would these changes reflect identity and fulfill expectations of the new father? Of course we still have to wait for the answers, but it seems feasible to ask, following Melosik, whether, in the face of so many encroachments on the male personality and psyche, as well as feminization of his body, “... a man is still a man?” (Z. Melosik, Kryzys męskości w kulturze współczesnej, Kraków: Oficyna Wydawnicza Impuls 2006, pp. 22.).

The article “Prosaic Aspects of Life. (Extra)ordinary Histories” is an attempt at describing the experience of fatherhood found in the poems of the authors from “bruLion” and “postbruLion” groups. While analyzing the social transformations which took place in Poland in the 1990s (e.g. the modifications of the system of social roles stereotypically assigned to each of the sexes, the change of paradigms of what has been commonly recognized as “male” and “female”, “the crisis of fatherhood,” extensively described by sociologists, etc.) and the transformations within lyric poetry itself (domination of personal lyric poetry, autobiographism, rejection of political and social obligations of literature in favour of the interest in privacy and concentration on the individual experience), the author asks about the literary attractiveness of the motif and analyses its various manifestations in the works of Marcin Świetlicki, Jacek Podsiadło, Robert Adamczak, Sławomir Matusz and Dariusz Suska.

Whereas women are sure of their biological maternity, men can never be fully certain of paternity and instead need to rely on indirect cues to assess whether they are likely to be father of their putative children. According to the psychological literature, men commonly use the information on the resemblance of offspring to self as an indicator of genetic relatedness. It seems, however, that in the absence of such a resemblance, similarity between a mother and a child might be important, because a man has additional reason to doubt his own biological paternity when the child is dissimilar to his partner. This assumption has been verified in two empirical studies.

The presented article consists of two main parts. The first one describes the characteristic elements of God’s fatherhood as it is seen by St. Augustine. Author of the study shows in this section Augustine’s teaching on God as a creator and parent. Author points as well to the manifestations of God’s actions towards man, to show finally the views of St. Augustine on the place of God in human life. The second part takes into the light the thoughts of Bishop of Hippo on human fatherhood and especially reveals his views on the relationship of the human fatherhood to God’s fatherhood and indicates a good of the procreation. In the last part of this section, the author presents an assessment of earthly fatherhood made by St. Augustine.

Rozumienie źródła, funkcji i obowiązków monarchii w starożytnym świecie pozostaje pod wpływem wierzeń religijnych tamtych czasów. Ta "teologia" zasadniczo rzutowała na koncpecję i charakter "królewskiego ojcostwa" determinując uprzednio relację między samym królem i światem nadprzyrodzonym. Wg źródeł biblijnych w czasie, gdy Izrael był minarchią, możliwe jest stwierdzenie istnienia specyficznej świadomości o roli króla w przymierzu zawartym między ludem i Bogiem. Ten wymagający i charyzmatyczny model ucieleśni się i zrelaizuje nie wcześniej niż z Mesjaszem-Królem, który w doskonały sposób objawi ojcostwo Boga.
The understanding of the origins, functions and duties of a monarchy in the ancient world was influenced by religious beliefs current at that time. This „theology” fundamentally impinged on the establishment of the concept and the character of „royal paternity” having previously determined the relations between the king himself and the supernatural world. According to biblical sources, at the time when Israel was a monarchy, it is possible to state that there was a specific awareness of the role of the king that consisted in stipulating the covenant between the nation and God. This demanding and charismatic model has been embodied and realised not until the moment when Messiah – the King who perfectly revealed God’s fatherhood

This article discusses heterogeneity of family and parental practices among Polish migrant fathers in Norway. The paper begins with a recollection of the contemporary approaches to masculinities, and addresses the emergence of “new fatherhood” in both family scholarship and migration studies. In the conclusion to the theoretical section, we reflect on transnational parenting in the context of male mobility. The empirical basis for the study stems from a combination of biographic and narrative interviews with members of Polish migrant families in Norway: ten Polish couples and two interviews conducted with fathers alone (the interviews were reviewed for this article from the broader research dedicated to the Polish families in Norway). In the analysis, we draw on the significance of the institutional support and social expectations for creating new patterns of being a father, yet we also underline the salient importance of individual, biographical elements that certainly influence the every-day practices of Polish migrant fathers. We put forward a general conclusion that there is not a singular fathering or fatherhood type among the Polish men in Norway, but rather a continuum of vari- ous family arrangements, often propelled by men, is observed. It is therefore crucial to look at the biographies which suggest social change and a shift towards a “new fatherhood”.

The aim of the paper is to indicate and justify a catalogue of contemporary father’s basic competences constructing his educational role in the family. This is the perspective of the theory of education, and therefore refers to the elementary components of the structure of the education process. The catalogue of father’s educational competences is embedded in wider perspective of social and cultural diagnosis of the contemporary family.
Celem artykułu jest wskazanie i uzasadnienie katalogu podstawowych kompetencji współczesnego ojca, składających się na jego rolę wychowawczą w rodzinie. Jest to perspektywa teorii wychowania, a zatem taka, która odwołuje się do elementarnych komponentów struktury procesu wychowania. Proponowany zbiór kompetencji wychowawczych ojca osadzony jest w perspektywie szerszej diagnozy społeczno-kulturowej współczesnej rodziny.

Over the last decades, very profound and multifaceted transformations of social life and customs have taken place worldwide. New global cultural trends, which have infl uenced the changes in the patterns of family life, as well as the changes in family structure have emerged. Moreover, the preferences in relation to the value of family life, educational tradition and the young people’s attitudes towards marriage and parenthood have changed. At the same time, the roles fulfi lled by parents have changed, which has its signifi cant implications visible above all in the fi eld of the tasks as well as care and educational functions fulfi lled by the family. The article discusses the problem of the perception of the caring and educational role of mother and father. It was assumed that the caring and educational role generally consists in satisfying the offspring’s basic needs, their higher needs and taking up educational activities in terms of health, moral, aesthetic and intellectual education. Thus, it is creating offspring such conditions which will allow to achieve potential development and life independence. The article is a report from research carried out by means of a survey method using the technique of a questionnaire. In the context of this research, the main research question: “What is the social perception of the caring and educational role of mother and father?”, was answered. Based on these results, it can be stated that the respondents attribute these features which are related to expressive functions to the role of a mother. They notice, however, that fathers more often spend their free time with a child, stablishing close emotional relations with a child, therefore, according to them, the fatherly role is extended to issues related to the care and upbringing of offspring.

The article is an attempt to link the philosophy of Levinas with the bioethical issues of the beginning of human life. The author refers to those statements of Levinas in which he describes who a person is, what is human body, being male/female, fatherhood. The ethical-anthropological character of Levinas’ thought makes it a profound source for contemporary discussions on moral themes, bioethical problems included. However, certain difficulties arise on account of the philosopher’s highly individual language. The aim of the article is to confront the language o f Levinas with the traditional language of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and colloquial language. The text is a proposition how to build bioethics not only on Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy or utilitarian or pragmatic philosophy but also on the philosophy of Levinas, as it sheds additional light on the problem of man, existence, life and interpersonal relations.

This paper is an attempt towards better understanding of the fatherhood of incarcerated men. In particular, research results are reported concerning a tool to measure the paternal involvement of incarcerated fathers – Questionnaire of Paternal Engagement ZK (KOZ-ZK). An exploratory factor analysis has revealed three dimensions of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, namely (i) paternal engagement during the time of imprisonment, (ii) paternal engagement during the leave from prison, (iii) father’s accessibility. In a pilot research project examining the psychometric properties of the questionnaire took part 215 incarcerated fathers. The questionnaire contained 22 items and was proved to have good psychometric properties. Additionally, a qualitative survey was conducted using the KOZ-ZK questionnaire and structured interviews. It turned out that the questionnaire properly reflected different intensities of paternal engagement of incarcerated fathers, important role being played by the relationship of the men with the mothers of their children.

W artykule przedstawiono zagadnienie dotyczące pedagogicznego modelu ojcostwa, przez który ukazano istotę ojcostwa, zadania i funkcje, jakie ma ojciec do spełnienia we współczesnej rodzinie. Pedagogiczny model ojcostwa przedstawiono jako określony konstrukt teoretyczny pożądanego, idealnego wizerunku ojcostwa. Termin ten oznacza zespół cech, właściwości indywidualnych: zewnętrznych i wewnętrznych ojca, zwłaszcza dotyczących jego zachowań werbalnych i instrumentalnych, relacji ojca z innymi członkami rodziny (dzieci, żona), charakteru, okazywanych uczuć, określonych postaw w procesie wychowania dziecka.
The article regards pedagogical model of fatherhood, through which the essence of fatherhood and the role and functions which fathers perform in the contemporary family are presented. The pedagogical model of fatherhood is portrayed as a specific theoretical construct of a desired, ideal image of fatherhood. This construct contains a set of characteristics and individual properties - external and internal of the father, in particular those related to his verbal and instrumental behaviors, relations with other members of the family (children, wife), character, emotions displayed, specific attitudes in the process of the child’s upbringing.

Aim: The aim of the article is to indicate how modern fatherhood is implemented in the era of the new reality Father does not have to maintain the family, he does not have to conquer, defend, but he should bring up the young generation well in a new reality, many families have to face different problems connecting the consistency in a family and upbringing issues. Modern fatherhood can be realized in different ways. Methods: In the research carried out using the questionnaire (interview) 699 fathers (aged 25–55) of early school–age children took part. The research was carried out in Poland between 2018 and 2020. Results: This article describes research results on educational models which are preferred by the youngest and the oldest fathers of early school-age children, educational methods transferred to the families by respondents, lack of relations with their fathers, people to whom children confide their problems and fathers’ reactions to children’s troubles. Conclusions: Despite many changes in the role of the father in the family, he still remains an open to the world for his children, which completes the educational process of the young generation.
