The theme of love and its function in creation oneiric portrayal of occupation in K. K. Baczyński's and T. Borowski's works The aim of the article is to show, by collating, that in particular works of Tadeusz Borowski and Krzysztof Kamil Baczyński appears coterminous depiction of the occupation world. Love in both authors’ works creates oneiric reality in which the cruelty is relegate to a secondary priority. Love encloses the world of the characters to “outside the windows” and “now and here”. In both autors’ works also come similar awakening, which ends oneiric creation. Parallel of Borowski’s “Farewell to Maria” (“Pożegnanie z Marią”) and Baczyński’s some erotic poems is to point out that similarities and prove the right of that thesis. Models of testimony: “re-writing the Holocaust literature” Abstract The article is a critical discussion of Pawel Wolski’s treatise titled Tadeusz Borowski – PrimoLevi. Prze-pisywanie literatury Holocaustu (Warsaw 2013). It is setting out selected aspects oftraversing of the researcher from Szczecin by considering the status of testimony literature.Also there is an emphasis put on the phenomenon of profiling using forms of utterancesin Holocaust discourse. The article shows two distinct strategies (analyzed by Wolski) ofautomodeling of writers’ own utterances: “towards” (Tadeusz Borowski) and “accordingto” (Primo Levi) preferred model of testimony shaped under the influence of contemporarypublic debate. The author of the text poses questions why there has never been a historical and literary synthesis regarding Polish camp literature, Lager-themed in particular, as Gulag literature possesses at least protosyntheses. He presents his answers which refer to the significance of Tadeusz Borowski’s camp prose, the exceptionality of the Holocaust, and the differences in recording the camp experience domestically and during emigration. What is most important in the article is the indication of the opportunities available today, regardless of the virtually impossible to overcome difficulties, for at least a preliminary synthesis of Polish camp literature to exist. The starting point for that postulate is the application of external criteria: historical-geographical (which camps, when and where?), and historical and literary considering such categories and study perspectives as periodisation, genology, and comparative study.

This article analyzes how the postwar accounts by female prisoners of Birkenau presented the character of Zofia Kossak, the famous writer and the activist of the Polish Underground State. The accounts are held today in the Archives of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum and were hitherto unpublished. They shows Zofia Kossak in an unheroic way, contrary to the published testimonies of her camp experience. The accounts are reminiscent of the famous article Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland published by Tadeusz Borowski in 1947.

In this article, I review the history of the “Borowski case” and place special emphasis on the latest dispute over the author of “Pożegnanie z Marią” which broke out between Andrzej Werner and archbishop Tadeusz Życiński. A recapitulation of the most significant features of the contradictory mental traditions of martyrdom literature and Borowski’s prose is followed by a discussion of the discourses from the 1940s. In the subsequent part of the article, I present the dispute over Borowski from the 1970s which accompanied the publication of Ucieczka z kamiennego świata by Tadeusz Drewnowski. Reference has also been made to the reviews from the 1980s by Jan Walec, Anna Łukowska and Małgorzata Dziewulska. A major part of the article has been devoted to the dispute over Tadeusz Borowski’s life choices and works published in 2007 in “Gazeta Wyborcza”. It was a dispute between Tadeusz Życiński who accused Borowski of “hatred of the differently minded” and Andrzej Werner who defended the writer. A moderate statement by Sławomir Buryła shed more light on the dispute; in his text entitled Katoliczka, patriotka, antysemitka (2008) he emphasized Borowski’s radical moralism. In this article, I provide the reason for Życiński’s ostentatious repetition of the seemingly out-of-date arguments against Borowski, I indicate the culture-related context of the archbishop’s opinion (the conservative Polish Catholic hierarchy). It was expressed at a time when a new list of required reading books was being created in 2007: Borowski’s stories from the Auschwitz concentration camp were to be replaced with a novel by Zofia Kossak-Szczucka.

The author of the paper wonders why nobody so far has attempted a historical-literary synthesis of Polish literature concerning the concentration camp experience in general, and the labour camp experience in particular, as the latter has an obvious potential for a proto-synthesis. The question is followed by subjective answers that build upon the significance of Tadeusz Borowski’s prose, the uniqueness of the Holocaust, and differences between the records of the camp experience in Poland and abroad. In its central part, the paper points to a certain possibility at our disposal to – irrespective of almost insurmountable obstacles – at least start the aforementioned synthesis. This can be done by the application of the external criteria: historical-geographical (what camps, when and where) and historical-literary, which would include such perspectives and categories as periodization, literary genres and comparative studies.

The article indicates how the figure of Zofia Kossak has been recorded in the unpublished accounts by former KL Auschwitz-Birkenau female internees who during their internment came into contact with the famous writer and activist of the Polish Underground State. Their testimonies diverge from the hagiographic tone which has dominated the known stories of Kossak’s camp experiences, rather resembling Tadeusz Borowski’s infamous post-WWII article entitled Alicja w krainie czarów.

In the article the author looks closer at the illustrated edition of books written by Janusz Korczak, published in Poland between 1950s and today. There were not so many publications as one could have presumed judging from relatively big popularity of „Old Doctor”. The attention is paid to the two volumes of adventures of king Matt (King Matt the First and King Matt on a Desert Island) illustrated by Jerzy Srokowski (1957), Waldemar Andrzejewski (1978), and quite recently by Marianna Oklejak (2011); Kaytek the Wizard graphically decorated by Gabriel Rechowicz (1960), Tomasz Borowski (1978), and once again Oklejak (2012); Bankruptcy of Little Jack with illustrations by Wiesław Majchrzak (1979) and a short story Fame with black-and-white drawings by Leonia Janecka (1958). The artists applied their original, though very different from each other, styles in creation of these illustrations, and Srokowski’s version of King Matt seems to be one of the most recognisable characters of Polish children’s books. The most interesting appeared to be the possibility of comparing illustrations executed by different artists, which accompany one particular scene from one of the books. The comparison shows to what extent the interpretations may vary between one another.

This article is a preliminary attempt to read the condition of survivors – those who were imprisoned in the displaced persons camps in occupied Germany just after the war. In this context author considers Tadeusz Nowakowski’s novel Obóz Wszystkich Świętych (Camp of All Saints), full of satire, grotesque and thoroughly soaked with sarcasm. The addition to Nowakowski’s vision is Tadeusz Borowski’s short story Bitwa pod Grunwaldem (Battle of Grunwald), as well as his poems from this time, e.g. Demokratyczne dary (Democratic Gifts), and also Jerzy Zagórski’s reports W południowych Niemczech (In Southern Germany), where the camps for DPs are compared to Henry Moore’s anthropomorphic figures sleeping in the tunnel. Separate reflections are devoted to the fate of Ida Fink, Shoah survivor, who was imprisoned in the Ettlingen camp. The writer mentions this time in the novel Podróż (Travel) and the interviews. Textual analyzes lead the author of the article to the conclusion that the narratives are proof of the inability to experience peace of mind in the time of freedom and generally the inability to return to pre-war times.

The article constitutes a preliminary attempt at reading from literature the condition of the survivors – people interned in German displaced persons’ camps immediately after WWII. In that context, the author considers the saturated with satire, grotesque, and sarcasm novel by Tadeusz Nowakowski entitled Obóz Wszystkich Świętych. Nowakowski’s vision is supplemented with Tadeusz Borowski’s story entitled Bitwa pod Grunwaldem, as well as his poems, e.g. Dary demokratyczne, and Jerzy Podgórski’s reports in the series W południowych Niemczech, in which DP camps were compared to an etching by Henry Moore presenting human-like figures sleeping in a tunnel. A separate consideration was applied to the fortunes of Ida Fink, interned in the Ettlingen camp. The writer reminisced on the time in her novel entitled The Journey, and in interviews. The analyses of the texts led the author to the conclusion that the discussed narratives indicate the inability to experience solace during (apparent) acquittal, and the inability to return to pre-WWII times.

Michał Aleksander Borowski (1872–1939), generał major rosyjskiej marynarki wojennej, kontradmirał Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej. Do Wojska Polskiego został przyjęty 12 grudnia 1918 r. W lutym 1919 r. w ramach Generalnej Delegacji Ministerstwa Aprowizacji sprawował funkcję kierownika portu gdańskiego, od lipca 1919 r. jednocześnie w ramach Departamentu dla spraw Morskich pełnił funkcję pełnomoc-nika do spraw wojskowych i morskich. W marcu 1921 r. był zastępcą przewodniczącego Delegacji Polskiej w Radzie Portu Gdańskiego, a od lipca 1923 r. przewodniczącym Polskiej Delegacji Rady Portu i Dróg Wodnych w Gdańsku. Ze służby odszedł w sierpniu 1927 r. Emeryturę spędził w Wilnie, gdzie zmarł 23 grudnia 1939 r.
Michał Aleksander Borowski (1872–1939), Major General of the Russian Navy, Rear Admiral of the Polish Navy. He was admitted to the Polish Army on December 12, 1918. In February 1919, as part of the General Delegation of the Ministry of Provisions, he held the post of head of the Gdańsk port, and from July 1919, simultaneously as part of the Department for Maritime Affairs, he held the post of plenipotentiary for military and maritime affairs. In March 1921, he was deputy chairman of the Polish delegation to the Gdańsk Port Council, and from July 1923, chairman of the Polish delegation to the Port and Waterways Council in Gdańsk. He left the service in August 1927 and retired in Vilnius where he died on December 23, 1939.

Artykuł przedstawia wybrane praktyki analizy tekstów literackich podejmowane w polskiej nauce o literaturze pierwszych dziesięcioleci XIX wieku, zwłaszcza te związane z działalnością akademicką. Różnorodność, a jednocześnie cechy wspólne różnych przypadków klasycystycznego „uważnego czytania” zostają ukazane dzięki analizie semantycznej słowa „rozbiór”, którym były one określane w epoce. Szczególny przedmiot uwagi stanowi pionierskie zastosowanie metod filologii klasycznej do opracowania tekstu nowożytnego przeprowadzone przez krytyków związanych z Uniwersytetem Wileńskim: Borowskiego, Mickiewicza i Klimaszewskiego.
The article presents selected practices of analysis of literary texts adopted in Polish literary scholarship in the first decades of the nineteenth century, particularly those connected with academic work. The variety and simultaneously common features among the various examples of classicist “close reading” are shown through a semantic analysis of the word “rozbiór” which was applied to such readings in the period. The pioneering adaptation of the methods of classical philology to work on a modern text, carried out by critics affiliated with the University of Wilno (now Vilnius), Borowski, Mickiewicz, and Klimaszewski, represents a particular object of interest.

Artykuł dotyczy opowiadania Tadeusza Różewicza Wycieczka do muzeum. Rozpatrywane jest ono w kontekście literatury Zagłady, literatury lagrowej oraz utworów aktualizujących temat odwiedzin muzeum byłego obozu koncentracyjnego, w tym tekstów samego Różewicza. Okazuje się, że istotną, dotąd niedostrzeżoną (kamuflowaną przez pisarza) inspiracją, podejmujących motyw wycieczki do muzeum, wierszy Rzeź chłopców i Warkoczyk, a także opowiadania W najpiękniejszym mieście świata oraz dramatu Pułapka, jest relacja Rudolfa Redera z obozu zagłady w Bełżcu. Można przypuszczać, że zarówno ten tekst, jak i inne utwory o charakterze wspomnieniowym, paraliterackim i literackim, traktujące o okrucieństwach drugiej wojny światowej w jakimś stopniu ukształtowały Różewiczowską poetykę „ściśniętego gardła”, przyczyniły się do „prozaizacji żywiołu lirycznego”, ale też uformowały światoobraz pisarza. Medaliony Nałkowskiej oraz proza obozowa Borowskiego stanowią istotny kontekst interpretacyjny Wycieczki do muzeum. Dostrzeżone w twórczości Różewicza ślady wymienionych tekstów (Redera, Nałkowskiej, Borowskiego), a więc także ich lektur, przekonują, że Różewicz wcale nie rozpoczynał, jak się mniema, jako pisarz odwracający się od tego, co tekstualne.

The paper describes the logical and at the same time the proper theory of the Newton’s law of universal gravitation in the universe. It presents the observed principles of “attraction” as a phenomenon of repulsion based on the difference of dark matter pressure. This paper proves in theory that the phenomenon of “gravitation”, as a phenomenon of attraction, does not exist (no mechanisms) and is mistakenly confused with the phenomenon of repulsion.

The article presented above is concerned with a few aspects of the work of the Lutheran Church in East Prussia. It is first of all based on Ludwik Ernest Borowski's work Neue Preußische Kirchenregistratur, die neuern Verordnungen und Einrichtungen Kirchen- und Schulsachen im Königreiche Preußen enthaltend. Nebst einigen zur kirchengeschichte Preußen gehörigen Aufsätzen. The author also uses earlier sources, like the list of churches of 1720 included in Walter Hubatsch's three-volume work concerned with history of the Lutheran Church in East Prussia and Daniel Arnoldts' presbyterology published in 1777. In the present article the problems are discussed of territorial organization of the Lutheran Church structures in East Prussia. These problems especially include the issue of the number of parish churches and succursal ones in particular Lutheran provinces and inspections, the proportions between the number of parishes and the number of succursals, their localization in towns and in the country. Other questions touched upon in the article are concerned with the kind of the right of patronage over the churches mentioned by Borowski and with the number of clergymen involved in pastoral work in those churches. The presented studies show that in East Prussia Borowski noted down 334 parishes and 62 succursals. The former ones constituted over 84% of all the Lutheran churches. The percentage of churches localized in towns was 18%. The Prussian king had patronage over nearly 2/3 of all the mentioned churches. The percentage of the churches of noblemen's collation was about 35, and towns' was 2.5. Two country parishes were under the patronage of the Grand Royal Hospital in Königsberg. In the studied period 412 clergymen worked in Lutheran churches in East Prussia. Taking into consideration both parish churches and succursals, there could be one pastor for each church, but on the average more of them worked in town parishes than in country ones.
