Opis:
In Africa, the use of African languages in education is often re-duced to a mere change of medium. This cannot work, as past experiences have amply shown and this rationale is even reinforced by globalization. The use of African languages in school must be buttressed on their inner strength, viz., local lore and orality. We suggest this can be achieved through a revamped and rebased primary schooling relying on the implica-tion of community members. This in turn could alleviate some of the short-comings formal education presently experiences. Such a change of frame-work is urgent, particularly in urban areas, to ensure transmission of linguis-tic and cultural legacies.

This paper is essentially a report on a web-based project that began over 20 years ago to document the vocabulary used mainly in the Swahili canon of classical Swahili poetry in the form of a glossary illustrated by textual citations from the poetry. It is a digital project, and part of the results have already been published in a WordPress site supported by HumTech, a technological support unit at the University of California, Los Angeles, California (UCLA). As the project evolved, it has expanded to include pedagogical and research tools to assist researchers and learners of advanced genres of Swahili literature in learning about and studying Swahili poetry, especially the poetry written in the so-called classical period. While the main thrust is still the documentation of lexis used in poetry and the construction of a comprehensive glossary, supported by citations from Swahili prosodic literature, other elements have been added: a bibliography of prosodic-focused literature, a section with information about specific poems and their authors, and a provision that allows the uploading of video and other relevant documentation. The project can be viewed online here: http://swahilipoetry.humnet.ucla.edu/.

Opis:
Literature of Angola and Mozambique is created mostly in Portuguese but at the same time writers attempt to show its distinction from European norms. There are two main characteristics that differentiate African texts written in Portuguese from the Portuguese literature: the presence of oral elements, and textual multilingualism. One of the tasks of the translators of the African literature is to show the multilingualism of the original to the reader, which leads to the presence of words and expressions from a third language in translation. The purpose of this paper is to find dominant tendencies by gathering and comparing techniques used by the translators and to try to determine their influence on the text’s macrostructure. The analysis is based on the examples of names of plants and animals from two novels created by Portuguese-speaking African writers and their translations into Polish: Terra sonâmbula by Mia Couto (Mozambique) and Jaime Bunda agente secreto by Pepetela (Angola).

Opis:
The present paper aims to investigate the way in which Africa is perceived by Danish speakers in light of the most petrified linguistic expressions and corpus data. As it turns out, the received picture is largely negative, with elements such as POVERTY, DISEASES, LACK OF DEMOCRACY, WARS and ETHNIC CLASHES in its foreground. Moreover, in the majority of the analyzed contexts Africa is presented as a cluster of similar countries facing the same challenges, with little room for the awareness of the great cultural diversity that flourishes on the continent. In this context, it is also worth adding that the analyzed collocations also convey a closely related stereotype of the inhabitants of Africa, regarded primarily through the prism of the color of their skin and the suffering they must endure on their continent. It is no surprise, then, that Africa and African people are quite often perceived as a problem for the western world, especially because of the highly-feared waves of immigrants and asylum seekers that occur regularly on the continent. On the other hand, at least in the light of the analyzed material, there seems to be no to little realization of the fact that many of the problems of Africa stem from the ages of draining its human and natural resources by the colonial powers. As argued by the author of the present article, such a picture of Africa is not only unfair but may have other consequences as well, possibly predetermining how Danes willview single issues such as immigration or military invasions, and letting them fall into the spiral of eurocentric and patronizing understanding of the world.

Opis:
This paper aims to reflect on the attempts on the lives of African languages, which experienced colonization, through the linguistic attitudes towards them in the colonial period and today. We discuss the metaphor of death directed at languages, we use the concept of necropolitics applied to language, as it concerns the control of the right to live or die, we discuss the right to kill extended to African languages in colonial society, and, specifically, we reflect on the attempts on the life of languages that suffered colonization even today, and we look at the linguistic attitudes towards Kimbundu, the language of Angola. In view of the analyses, we observed two linguistic attitudes: a) absence of naming and specifying the language to which the vocabulary in Kimbundu belongs; and b) differentiated treatment between European and African languages. We believe that these linguistic attitudes stem from discourses belonging to the same colonial discursive formation and threaten the life of African languages even today. We observe a certain limitation of the use of these languages, just as in the colonial period, there is a circumscription of the space that African languages should occupy, they are not in equal space in the text in relation to the languages of European origin. We consider that in the realm of language, necropolitics in the colony was guided by the desire for the social death of African languages in society expressed through laws that prohibited their use. Today necropolitical actions can also be expressed by attitudes that seek to circumscribe African languages to specific spaces, assigning less social value when compared to European languages. Despite the different necropolitical actions experienced since the colonial period, African languages are still alive.

The subject of our reflection is the prominence of North African Francophone literature in teaching the French language and literature at the specialization of applied French language studies. Recalling the texts written by Tahar Ben Jelloun, Assia Djebar or Boualem Sansal, and the theories proposed by Luc Collès or Abdelkader Kheir, we demonstrate that a single North African Francophone literary work is the subject of intercultural communication. It also constitutes a source of cultural knowledge giving evidence in support of the fact that French is the language of diversity and multiculturalism.

Opis:
It was always important for the Church, that a communication between the preacher and the listener was the best; the former must be understood in such a way that the latter is moved by the words of the Gospel. Before the arrival of Europeans in Central Africa (in late nineteenth century), the Bemba people did not know any written form, and their language only had a spoken form. It was with the arrival of Europeans on the Bemba lands that the era of learning, writing, studying and classifying the language of this ethnic group began. The first Europeans to reach the Bemba area were the missionaries, the White Fathers, and it was they who, after beginning their missionary activity, began to study the Bemba language. This article presents the achievements of the White Fathers in this field and tries to explain how the process of learning the Bemba language by the White Fathers was carried out.
