The threshold of discrimination of a pure tone probe in the background of a one ERB wide masker composed of inharmonic partials was investigated. The experiment was participated with a large group of 35 listeners. Very consistent results were observed across two independent variables: the number of partials (from three to five) and their amplitudes being equal or unequal. For all but one of the conditions, the threshold obtained was between -4 and -5 dB. The threshold slightly decreased with increasing number of partials and was slightly lower when their amplitudes were even.

The Taylor-Socolar tiling has been introduced as an aperiodic mono-tile tiling. We consider a tiling space which consists of all the tilings that are locally indistinguishable from a Taylor-Socolar tiling and study its structure. It turns out that there is a bijective map between the space of the Taylor-Socolar tilings and a compact Abelian group of a Q-adic space (Q̅) except at a dense set of points of measure 0 in Q̅. From this we can derive that the Taylor-Socolar tilings have quasicrystalline structures. We make a parity tiling from the Taylor-Socolar tiling identifying all the rotated versions of a tile in the Taylor-Socolar tiling by white tiles and all the reflected versions of the tile by gray tiles. It turns out that the Taylor-Socolar tiling is mutually locally derivable from this parity tiling.

The heat loss at ground contact structures is taken into consideration in building heat loss calculations. However, it implies uncertainties due to the physical properties of the soil as well as the building structure. In this paper, new methods are introduced for calculating the heat loss at ground contact structures. Firstly, it examines the presently used and general calculation methods and their shortcomings. Then a simple-to-use method based on thousands of results of parametrized transient finite element thermal models is shown. In this research, the calculations take the middle-eastern European climate conditions, geothermal gradient and soil properties as well as the relevant harmonized EU standards into account. The equivalent linear heat transfer coefficients, which in this method also contain the effects of thermal bridges, occurring in various conditions are summarized in a table and can be calculated by new formulae also shown in the paper using condition-dependent constants, the ground floor's heat transfer coefficient and the length between the floor and ground level.

In this study, the possibility of enhancing heat insulation performance of hollow bricks by filling the cavities with perlite is investigated. A conjugate heat transfer by conduction, convection and radiation in different hollow bricks are analyzed numerically to assess their thermal performance. Calculations are performed for three scenarios for each type of hollow brick: (i) cavities are filled with air, (ii) half of the cavities are filled with perlite while the other half is filled with air, (iii) all cavities are filled with perlite. The benefit of filling cavities with perlite is justified quantitatively for each investigated hollow brick type. It is concluded that the enhancement in insulation performance can be up to 15.6% and 27.5% for half-perlite and full-perlite cases, respectively, depending on the brick type.

Opis:
Solar radiation coming to a solar panel is absorbed and converted into thermal energy, increasing its temperature. This study is focused on the solar thermal panels. As known, the analysis of thermal performance of the collector includes such parameters as solar irradiance, ambient temperature and configuration of collectors etc. In this study, thermal analysis of the absorbent plate of a flat plate solar collector and the temperature transfer to the working fluid, were investigated. During thermal analysis the absorbent plate was considered as an one-dimensional fin. It is assumed that lower surface of the solar panel is ideally insulated in this study. Therefore solar irradiance and heat loss to the environment are analyzed at the upper surface of the absorber plate. This study is aimed to investigate the relations of temperature distribution on the absorber plate and heat transfer from the absorber plate to the fluid. The achievable maximum fluid temperature at the practical working conditions, which quantifies the availability of usable heat energy, obtained by the collector, has been determined as a function of solar irradiance. Procedure is based on steady state analysis and on calculation of the thermal performance of flat-plate collector. The effects of the parameters, which determine the collector efficiency, have been investigated by evaluating all results. Results show that the flat-plate collector performs good and provides the desired quantity of hot water.

Opis:
The principal function of a continuous casting mold is to receive the liquid steel and ensure its cooling in order to permit the formation of a solidified and sufficiently resistant skin. This is the phase of primary cooling. The efficiency of this process depends on several parameters, such as the casting speed, the temperature exchange between the walls of the mold and the thin crust of the slab, as well as the conicity of continuous casting mold. The latter has been the subject of this work, which consists in investigation of the influence of the conicity of mold on the variation of the temperature field, and friction, generated during lowering of the slab. The numerical simulation was carried out using Fluent 6.0 code. The obtained curves reflect changes of the factors mentioned above as a functions of the conicity.

The generalized Penrose tiling is an infinite set of decagonal tilings. It is constructed with the same rhombs (thick and thin) as the conventional Penrose tiling, but its long-range order depends on the so-called shift parameter sın łangle 0,1). The formula for structure factor, calculated within the average unit cell approach, works in physical space only and is directly dependent on the s parameter. It allows to straightforwardly change the long-range order of the refined structure just by changing the s parameter and keeping the tile decoration unchanged. The possibility and viability of using the shift as one of the refinement parameters during structure refinement was tested for a numerically generated simple binary decagonal quasicrystal.

We recapitulate our previously developed recursive algorithm for creating "paperfolding" structures in arbitrary dimensions. Here we explain and apply it specifically to three and four dimensions. We visualize the results by suitable projections. We also explicitly enumerate the number of "folds" in the first four generations of the recursion. We conjecture (without proof) that the Fourier spectrum of the structures is pure point (the Bragg peaks).

We put forward a finite element method for static problems of cubic quasicrystals by variation of a suitable general potential functional. As an example we study a quasicrystal column containing a penny-shaped crack. The comparison with analytical results shows that the precision and efficiency of the numerical solution are satisfactory. The procedure can be used to solve more complicated boundary value problems and can be extended towards more sophisticated methods of crack tip loading analysis.

Opis:
The structural and mechanical stability of quasicrystals are important issues due to their potential for possible applications at high temperatures and stresses. The aim of the present work is, therefore, to review the earlier works on conventional crystalline and quasicrystalline materials and also to report the results and the analysis on the Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch like behavior of nanoquasicrystalline $Al_{62.5}Cu_{25}Fe_{12.5}$ alloys. It was observed that, at large grain sizes, the hardness increases with decreasing grain size, exhibiting the conventional Hall-Petch relationship, whereas for smaller grains, inverse Hall-Petch behavior was identified. The inverse Hall-Petch behavior in the nanoquasicrystalline phase could be attributed to thermally activated shearing of the grain boundaries, leading to grain boundary sliding in nanostructures of quasicrystalline grains. These results were analyzed based on the dislocation pile-up model as well as the grain boundary shearing models applicable to nanomaterials.

We studied surface decorations of faceted icosahedral Al-Cu-Fe and decagonal Al-Cu-Co single quasicrystals by the scanning electron microscopy using primary and secondary electrons. Both types of single quasicrystals exhibited decorations on their facets, however the character of the decorations was totally different. Three kinds of decorations has been developed. On icosahedral $Al_{60}Cu_{26}Fe_{14}$ quasicrystals we found three kinds of decorations: cellular, cavity type and fractal-like. There was no evident difference in chemical composition between the inner dodecahedra and the decorations of all types. Surface decorations found on decagonal $Al_{73.5}Cu_{17.5}Co_9$ quasicrystals formed a kind of irregular dendritic stars on the separate bright islands.

We consider connections between similar sublattices and coincidence site lattices and, more generally, between similar submodules and coincidence site modules of general (free) ℤ-modules in $ℝ^d$. In particular, we generalise results obtained by S. Glied and M. Baake on similarity and coincidence isometries of lattices and certain lattice-like modules called S-modules. An important result is that the factor group OS(M)/OC(M) is Abelian for arbitrary ℤ-modules M, where OS(M) and OC(M) are the groups of similar and coincidence isometries, respectively. In addition, we derive various relations between the indices of coincidence site lattices and their corresponding similar sublattices.
