Opis:
The paper presents optical fiber sensor designed for medical audiometric measurements. Currently, highly precise audiometric examinations require attachment of reflective element inside the ear. We propose alternative contactless optical and non-invasive method for audiometric applications. Presented sensor utilizes extrinsic intensity modulation combined with interferometric method to measure low amplitude vibrations with flat frequency response curve and no resonance effects. Experiment was performed with tympanic membrane model stimulated by external loudspeaker. Experimental results show usage possibility of presented sensor for laryngological and audiometric tests of ear membrane response, which is important for both diagnosis and implants sensitivity fitting for people with hearing deficits.

Opis:
In this paper porous and as-grown GaN metal-semiconductor-metal photodiodes with Ni contact electrodes were fabricated. Structural and optical properties were studied of the both samples. Both detectors show a sharp cut-off wavelength at 370 nm, with a maximum responsivity of 0.14 A/W and 0.065 A/W achieved at 360 nm for porous GaN and as-grown metal-semiconductor-metal photodetectors, respectively. The metal-semiconductor-metal photodiode based on porous GaN shows enhanced twice magnitude of responsivity relative to the as-grown GaN metal-semiconductor-metal photodiode. Enhancement of responsivity can be attributed to the relaxation of stress and reduction of surface pit density in the porous sample. The porous sample showed a significantly low dark current at 5 V as compared to as grown sample.

Results of measurements of optical radiation emitted by partial and complete electrical discharges occurring on a bushing insulator model placed in air are presented in the article. Registration was performed using a spectrophotometer, enabling for measurement of optical radiation in the range from 270 to 1700 nm. Detailed characteristics of spectrophotometer are presented in our previous paper. The primary objective of the laboratory tests was to evaluate the impact of supply voltage changes in the range from 0 to 0.99 $U_{b}$ (breakdown voltage) on the intensity and spectral character of the optical radiation emitted by partial discharges generated on the porcelain insulation surface of the bushing insulator. In the scope of studies analyzes of the effects of voltage changes on the obtained spectral waveforms were performed, whereby voltage increase and reduction was examined separately. Additionally, measurements and analyzes carried out included impact estimation of the time period as the voltage was applied to the high-voltage electrodes on the course of optical phenomena related to the generation of partial discharges.

This paper presents the application and comparison of a macrobend seismic optical fiber accelerometer and ferrule-top cantilever fiber sensor (made by Optics11 - Amsterdam, Netherlands) both for long distance vibration monitoring. The sensors utilize typical telecommunication optical transmission systems with specially prepared sensing head. Both optical fiber sensors measure force and acceleration similar to the piezoelectric accelerometers. One of the advantages of these devices is insensitivity to electromagnetic interference because of lack of electrically driven elements in sensing head area. Experiments with wide ranges of frequencies and vibration amplitudes were performed. Main parameters and measurement capabilities of both sensor types were compared. Experimental results show usage possibility of both sensor types in industry and other explosion risk environments for vibration measurement and online monitoring.

Planar waveguides in which some range of the waveguide was modified by depositing on it a layer of some other dielectric, are called composite optical waveguides. Such a structure is based on a planar waveguide obtained by means of ion exchange $K^+-Na^+$ on glass, and covered by an adequately profiled dielectric layer. This kind of structure is of much interest due to considerable possibilities of taking measurements, which may contribute to a further development of the optoelectronic sensor. Especially required are sensor systems in chemistry, biochemistry, biotechnology, and others. Investigations on the properties of composite layers constitute a continuation of investigations concerning the construction of interferometers, which are very sensitive, cheap and easy to be produced.

Opis:
The performed research works consider diagnosis of different models of support and bushing insulators. Insulator systems undergo aging processes, which causes deterioration of the insulating properties. In addition, pollutants that accumulate on the surface of high voltage insulators cause further reduction of the insulation properties. Presence of pollutants and high humidity level cause formation of conductive paths, which acts as a source of partial discharges. Presented results depict optical signals, recorded by ultraviolet camera, which were emitted by surface partial discharges occurring on different insulator models. In particular, the effect of the relative value of camera sensitivity on the number of surface partial discharges counts was evaluated. In addition, analysis of the effect of the surface partial discharges generation time on registered counts number was made. The experiments were performed at a constant voltage of $0.9U_{p}$ and for a distance between the HV electrode and GND equal to 10 cm. The experimental study lasted over a period of 30 min, while the measurement steps were done every minute.

Opis:
Silicon n-channel MOS transistors are a promising solution for sub-terahertz radiation detection. Their sensitivity is strongly related to the device construction. A type and thickness of the device substrate are key parameters affecting the responsivity, because the silicon substrate is a medium for the radiation propagation and the radiation energy loss, which degrades the detection efficiency. This work is aimed at analysis of the silicon substrate characteristics effect on operation of the MOSFETs as the terahertz radiation sensors. A manufacturing of the MOSFETs on three different substrate types including changing the substrate thickness is described in the paper. Next, the fabricated devices were exposed to THz radiation and their photoresponses were measured. It may be concluded that MOSFETs on silicon-on-insulator wafers with locally thinned substrates demonstrate the highest photoresponse. However, the experiments with the MOSFETs on high resisivity wafers give also promising results.

The authors of the presented paper deal with investigations concerning applications of the optical fiber sensor of the magnetic field in electric DC engines with permanent magnets. The aim of the sensor is to measure the state of magnetization of permanent magnets (basing on the measurements of magnetic field induction). The knowledge of the state of magnetization helps to decide whether permanent magnets need to be additionally magnetized in order to prevent damages of the whole engine. This can be done automatically, even when the engine is running. For the purpose the Faraday magnetooptic effect is used. The presented investigations concern an optical fiber sensor of the magnetic field provided with a glass rod characterized a high value of the Verdet constant as the sensing element. Thanks to the application of optical fibers the connection of the sensor head with the whole measuring system is constructed of insulating material without using of electrical connections.

Optical fibers may be applied in the technique of measuring electric current, particularly as so-called optical current transducers. They are small in size, cheap, light and safe. Their sensitivity, however, connected with the Faraday effect, is rather poor, and they are also susceptible to considerable disturbances (deformations of the fibers). Their sensitivity can be increased by lengthening the path of effect, but this involves also an increase of noise and greater fluctuations of the measured signal due to changes of internal stresses induced by external factors. These negative phenomena can be reduced by applying fibers less sensitive to deformations. The author supposes that photonic crystal fiber with a glass core may display such properties. Orifices in the cladding can to some extent prevent the propagation of deformations from outside the core, and thus decrease the birefringence of the fiber induced by elastooptic effects. The paper presents preliminary measurements of typical photonic crystal fiber exposed to mechanical vibrations.

Opis:
In optical fibers there exists an optical birefringence induced by external factors and stress produced in technological processes. The induced birefringence makes difficult to apply optical fibers in heads of polarimetric sensors. It has been proposed to use a photonic crystal fiber working in an index guiding regime due to the small value of stress in a fiber core produced by internal and external factors. This article presents an expansion of our earlier investigations. The expansion consists of investigations concerning the influence of external magnetic field induction on the state of polarization of light in the function of an azimuth of the input linear polarization ϕ. On the basis of the resulting characteristics optimal working points of the tested fiber were determined.
