Many others who could have been included will not be found, not only because there is not enough space here to mention all of them here, but also because there is a lack of sources dealing with the millions of senior heroines who are anonymous; elderly women who play a vital role in the development of humanity when they pass on knowledge and values; women who remain active in their later years and who only retire the day they die

The active ageing concept includes domain of independent, healthy and secure living which includes financial aspects, measured by risk of poverty and material deprivation. The key questions of this paper are: how are the poverty indicators related to each other in the active ageing index?; in what ways are they related to some of the other indicators included in the index (such as employment)? And which countries in Europe are “winners” and which are “losers” in this particular financial aspects based on the Active Ageing Index? Besides of this, the example of sub-national application of active ageing index for Poland was presented with showing relation of these financial indicators in the analysis.

Population ageing is one of the most important demographic trends in modern societies. The process has broad implications in both macro- and micro-scale. In the article we focus on ageing-related challenges for enterprises. This area is very important for contemporary and future economies. Customers, employees and stakeholders of companies are getting older. In this changing environment new challenges appear including problems in hiring employees with relevant competencies, loosing organizational knowledge, employee succession, or mismatch between offered goods and market needs of changing costumers. Therefore, it becomes necessary to implement Age Management (AM) in organizations. The activities of employers in this area have to be supported by economic and legal instruments, and actions towards an increase of awareness and sensitivity to age-related issues.

Ageing of the population constitutes a global phenomenon. This process not only means that the number of the elderly people in population increases, but also entails the demographic changes which influence several social-economic mechanisms, including labour market. Combating its adverse consequences on labour market includes actions directed at extending the professional activity of individuals and the increase in employment indicators of persons in immobile working age and it is a significant element of implementing the concept of active ageing. Implementing certain solutions covered by the concept of active ageing, together with the extension of retirement age, is perceived as the remedy on some adverse consequences (especially those concerning the labour market and pension systems) associated with the process of societies’ ageing. Therefore, projects and programmes are passed on EU and national levels, which strives to boost the activity of senior citizens. This article attempts to analyse chosen indicators connected with aims included in the Programme of Solidarity between Generations. Actions to Increase Professional Activity of Persons over 50 (Program solidarność pokoleń. Działania dla zwiększenia aktywności zawodowej osób w wieku 50+), while using the data from the Eurostat’s database and analyses such as Balance of Human Capital (Bilans Kapitału Ludzkiego).

Purpose: To evaluate the impact of self-regulated pneumatic resistance exercise on variables related to balance, gait and lower extremity muscle function in community dwelling older adults. Materials and methods: Thirty-six older adults, aged ≥65 years completed the testing procedure as either the 10 week control (n=18) or intervention (n=18) group. Outcome measures included spatiotemporal gait variables, double leg standing balance assessment (with eyes open and closed), and the five times sit-to-stand measurement. Results were analysed using ANCOVA tests, with baseline values included as a covariate. Results: No change to balance or gait was identified in either group. Participants within the intervention group significantly decreased time taken to complete the five times sit-to-stand test (p=0.006, η_p^2=.218), while no change was reported within the control group. Conclusion: Positive findings of increased lower extremity muscle function indicate that self-regulated pneumatic resistance may represent an appropriate exercise intervention for use in older adults, although the lack of improvement to balance and gait parameters suggest that further research is required to develop delivery modalities for optimum effectiveness in this population.

Active ageing is more and more popular concept treated as medicine against expected problems of increasing proportions of the elderly. Active ageing approach has relatively short history because it was started in 1980. In particular intellectual climate. The paper is aimed at indicating genesis of the approach due to analysis how some ways of thinking popular in the second half of the 20thcentury affected the concept. Attention is paid to phenomenology, critical gerontology, neoliberalism, processual approach and future studies.
Koncepcja aktywnego starzenia się staje się coraz bardziej popularna receptą na spodziewane problemy związane ze wzrostem odsetka osób starszych. Jest ona relatywnie świeżej daty, albowiem powstała w latach 1980., w określonym klimacie intelektualnym. Celem artykułu jest wskazanie genezy tego podejścia, poprzez wskazanie najważniejszych nurtów intelektualnych drugiej połowy XX w. oddziałujących na ostateczny kształt koncepcji aktywnego starzenia się. Omówiony został wpływ fenomenologii, gerontologii krytycznej, neoliberalizmu, podejścia procesualnego i zarządzania przyszłością.

In this article we make use of preference theory developed by Hakim (2000) in the context of reconciling work and family to cover and explain different patterns of retirement exit paths and retirement satisfaction levels in the Czech Republic. We propose that lifestyle preferences and values may help to explain why some older workers continue to work while others are determined to retire as early as possible. Three types are identified among the 55–65 age group: work oriented, retirement oriented, and adaptive. The data shows that self-perception of the respondent as being active or more rest-oriented is associated with actual labour market activity of the respondent. Different types also perceive and evaluate labour market exit differently, and most importantly they differ in their reaction to various labour market and pension policies and family/partnership conditions. In the discussion we challenge the notion of active ageing as a general “one-size-fits-all” policy and urge that more attention be paid to the role of individual values and preferences when looking at the organisation of latter life roles.

Opis:
The need for long-term care for the elderly in Europe will increase more and more due to the ageing population in the countries. A deteriorating demographic structure, rising mortality and declining birth rates, longer life expectancy and high external migration are key factors negatively affecting cost-effective pension and healthcare systems. People live and age differently depending on their lifestyle, health status and genetic inheritance. However, they all strive to maintain their economic, social and health status after retirement, as well as to have an active and fulfilling life. This becomes a serious challenge for the social systems of the countries, which must guarantee a dignified way of life for every individual who has reached the retirement age and cannot take care of himself. This article presents the possibilities of providing long-term care for the elderly who have difficulties in their normal daily activities and life challenges due to their old age while trying to live an intensive life in good health and maintaining their previous economic and social status.
Zapotrzebowanie na długoterminową opiekę nad osobami starszymi w Europie będzie coraz większe ze względu na starzenie się społeczeństwa w poszczególnych krajach. Pogarszająca się struktura demograficzna, rosnąca śmiertelność i spadające wskaźniki urodzeń, dłuższa średnia długość życia i wysoka migracja zewnętrzna to kluczowe czynniki wpływające negatywnie na opłacalne systemy emerytalne i opieki zdrowotnej. Ludzie żyją i starzeją się w różny sposób, w zależności od stylu życia, stanu zdrowia i uwarunkowań genetycznych. Po przejściu na emeryturę wiele osób na ogół stara się utrzymać swój dotychczasowy status ekonomiczny, społeczny i zdrowotny, a także pragnie prowadzić aktywne i satysfakcjonujące życie. Staje się to poważnym wyzwaniem dla systemów społecznych krajów – muszą one zagwarantować godny sposób życia każdemu, kto osiągnął wiek emerytalny i nie może dłużej pracować. Autorka niniejszego artykułu przedstawia możliwości zapewnienia opieki długoterminowej osobom starszym, które mają trudności z wykonywaniem normalnych codziennych czynności i wyzwań życiowych ze względu na podeszły wiek.

Research background: The ageing phenomenon undermines the stability and equilibrium of the labour market and it affects the economic development of countries, as well as the welfare of older people aged over 65 years. Purpose of the article: Against this background, our research is conducted to assess the specific ways in which active ageing (measured through the active ageing index ? AAI), correlated with other economic and labour market credentials, would impact the economic development of EU Member States. Methods: The research methodology consists of two econometric procedures, namely (i) cluster analysis performed on EU?28 countries to configure congruent groups according to similar features of the active ageing (measured through the Active Ageing Index ? AAI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) levels, respectively (ii) panel data analysis, applied distinctly on two panels, EU?15 (old) and EU?13 (new), relying on four macro-econometric models (robust regression, panel corrected standard errors, spatial lag and spatial error), in order to test the direct influences of AAI and other economic and social selected variables on economic development. The analysis is made for the 2010?2018 lapse of time, by capturing all the available data for the AAI as reported by the European Commission. Findings & Value added: The results highlight important dissimilarities between the EU countries that require a rethinking of policies for the active ageing population support. Thereby, constant policy rethinking, adequate strategies, measures and tools for the active ageing population support become outlier keystones that entail a successful integration of the older people within all life dimensions.

Some phenomena associated with ageing populations are transition of economies to focus more on the production and distribution of goods and services for older adults as well as for younger age groups as part of their preparation for old age. The paper presents the main features of the concept of “silver economy” in the context of active ageing policies. The study presents a typology of the silver economy models in the European Union at national and regional levels based on the use of the Active Ageing Index in comparison to the typology of differences and cultures of capitalism as well as the typology of welfare states. The summary contains conclusions for practical interventions and proposals for further research.
Jednym ze zjawisk związanych z procesem starzenia się społeczeństw są przemiany systemów gospodarczych zorientowane na produkcję i dystrybucję dóbr i usług dla osób starszych, jak również dla młodszych grup wiekowych w ramach ich przygotowania do starości. Artykuł przybliża główne cechy koncepcji „srebrnej gospodarki” w kontekście realizacji polityki aktywnego starzenia się. Opracowanie przedstawia typologię modeli srebrnej gospodarki w krajach Unii Europejskiej na poziomach krajowym i regionalnym na podstawie wykorzystania porównań indeksu aktywnego starzenia się (Active Ageing Index) do typologii zróżnicowań i kultur kapitalizmu oraz typologii państw dobrobytu. W podsumowaniu przybliżono wnioski dla działań praktycznych oraz propozycje dalszych kierunków badań.

This article emphasizes the importance of development of new interdisciplinary branch of science called gerontechnology. The main goal of this publication is to reflect on the opportunity to adapt new technologies in the service of elderly people. In the first part I review the potential fields of application of new technologies in different spheres of life of an old person. I focus mostly on technologies used in social care, healthcare, those stimulating social and civic participation, as well as those aiming at education and entertainment. In the second part I point at various barriers and limitations that impede the applicability of new technologies on the practical ground. In the third part I elaborate on moral and ethical dilemmas which are inextricably associated with the emergence of new technologies and their exploitation by humans. Conclusions include, among others, a postulate to incorporate telecare and telemedicine solutions into the mainstream senior policy in Poland.
Artykuł podkreśla znaczenie rozwoju nowej interdyscyplinarnej gałęzi nauki zwanej gerontechnologią. Celem publikacji jest refleksja nad możliwością zaadaptowania nowych technologii w służbie seniorom. W części pierwszej dokonuję przeglądu potencjalnych możliwych zastosowań nowych technologii w różnych obszarach życia człowieka starego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcam technologiom stosowanym w opiece socjalnej, służbie zdrowia, stymulującym partycypację społeczną i obywatelską oraz służącym edukacji i rozrywce. W części drugiej zwracam uwagę na bariery i ograniczenia, które utrudniają aplikowalność rozwiązań technologicznych na gruncie praktycznym. W części trzeciej podkreślam znaczenie dylematów natury etycznej i moralnej, które nierozerwalnie towarzyszą rozwojowi nowych technologii i ich zastosowaniu w służbie człowiekowi. Wśród wniosków pojawia się postulat włączenia rozwiązań z zakresu teleopieki i telemedycyny w nurt współczesnej polityki senioralnej.

The aim of the paper is to present the opinions of Poles on ageing and senior citizens. The main focus is placed on the question of Poles’ attitude towards active ageing, i.e an idea to encourage older people to stay involved as citizens (in various areas, including employment). In order to place mentioned issues in context, the author begins with a review of psychological theories on ageing and its consequences. The elderly are currently becoming one of the subjects of a global culture. As a consequence of a substantial increase in the number of individuals belonging to this age-group, the social status of the elderly is constantly growing. This change has resulted in science “re-accustoming” with the issue of the old age, and the culture has been promoting its new and medially attractive quality. This article analyzes the relevance of the stereotypes and prejudices conditioning the quality of life among the elderly. The authors discuss the new challenges resulting from the demographic revolution that is taking place right now. The examples employed here are to facilitate turning the theory of active aging in a friendly environment into practice. Nevertheless, the authors are aware that this change will not be an easy or a swift process.

Ageing policy seems to be the priority for many states – including Poland – facing the ageing trends. Providing with support and inclusion of seniors into mainstream social life is the main strategy of actions on the international, regional, national and local level. The aim of the article is to show the relation between old people and educational and labor market as they are bi‑directional and very complex. Those areas are – next to health care – crucial in terms of active ageing and inclusive senior strategies. The article is based on desk research and the main method was analysis of existing documents. The main thesis of the paper states that: 1) there is an incongruity between real needs of old people and their satisfaction,2) satisfying of the needs of the elderly meets barriers that are an effect of lack of qualified staff that could effectively meet those demands. First part of the paper presents ageing policy as a strategy on different levels of social policy. The second part presents educational and labor markets as two crucial areas of active ageing – old people are on one hand active participants on both of them and – on the other hand – they are beneficiaries of solutions and services provided by professionals in ageing. The aim of those analyses is to depict mutual relations and to provide recommendations on improvements in both of those areas.
Polityka senioralna wydaje się jednym z priorytetowych obszarów działania wielu państw stojących w obliczu starzenia się społeczeństw, w tym także dla Polski. Zapewnienie wsparcia oraz włączanie seniorów do głównego nurtu życia społecznego to od kilkunastu lat sztandarowe hasła strategii działań na poziomie międzynarodowym, regionalnym, krajowym i lokalnym. Celem artykułu jest pokazanie relacji, jakie zachodzą między seniorami a rynkiem edukacyjnym oraz rynkiem pracy. Wybrane obszary, są – obok ochrony zdrowia – kluczowe, jeśli chodzi o aktywne starzenie się i działania włączające. Artykuł oparty jest na badaniach typu desk research, a jego podstawą była analiza dokumentów zastanych. Główne tezy artykułu głoszą, iż, po pierwsze, istnieje niedopasowanie między realnymi potrzebami seniorów a ich zaspokajaniem oraz, po drugie, zaspokajanie potrzeb seniorów napotyka na przeszkody wynikające z braku wykwalifikowanej kadry, która mogłaby dostarczać optymalnych rozwiązań. W pierwszej części zaprezentowane zostanie zagadnienie polityki senioralnej jako strategii na różnych szczeblach polityki społecznej. W drugiej części przedstawiona będzie analiza rynku edukacyjnego oraz rynku pracy jako dwóch kluczowych obszarów dla aktywnego starzenia się. Seniorzy są bowiem aktywnymi uczestnikami obu tych sfer, ale także beneficjentami świadczeń dostarczanych przez wykształcone i wykwalifikowane kadry usług senioralnych. Celem analiz jest pokazanie tych wzajemnych relacji oraz rekomendacje w zakresie poprawy sytuacji w obu obszarach.
