Opis:
In 1967 the author conducted a range of preser vatin g opérations in the Dominican Friars Monastery at Cracow. The above works have led to revealing of many details throwing new light on the history of monastery’s refectory and at the same time allowing to define more exactly the time and circumstances in which this Romanesque building was erected. Hypotheses as to erection of the building valid up to now suggested the existence of a crypt-type Dominican church dating as far back as to the 13-th century. However, more detailed investigations are allowing to suggest that the refectory might be dated to the early 13-th century and that it is even pre- Dominican building. According to author’s opinion it could be Trinity church, Cracow’s oldest parish church. Its dimensions were as follows: about 19 meters in length, some 9 meters in width and 7 meters in height up to ceiling. The church was constructed of the not too skillfully worked limestone cubes. After acquiring of the church from the bishop Ivo Odrowąż the Dominican Friars have rebuilt it slightly. From those times, flor example, dates the crypt beneath it. It was not too long after it that the Dominican Friars have gained another church and the Romanesque building has been turned into monastery. The building that was meanwhile heightened in the 15-th century has been designed for the monastery’s library, that, in turn, in 1850 was replaced by the refectory. The traces of several reconstructions from the Middle Ages may still be clearly seen in places where the plaster work was removed.
