Opis:
Augmented Reality uses Head Mounted Displays (HMD) to overlay the real word with additional virtual information. Virtual Retinal Displays (VRD), a new display technology, no longer requires Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). VRD technology addresses the retina directly with a single laser stream of pixels. There are no studies on the user’s informational strain in this new VRD technology. Various papers have shown that Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is a valid indicator for the user’s informational strain. An empirical test revealed no difference in the user’s HRV between VRD technology and LCD technology. Consequently, there seems to be a comparable user informational strain regarding the display types.

Opis:
Representatives of the genus Stentor (Stentoridae, Heterotrichea) are striking ciliates in environmentalwater samples because of their size (up to 4 mm) and their trumpet-like shape. Important for species identification are the following main characteristics: (1) the presence or absence of endosymbiotic algae (zoochlorellae); (2) the colour of the pigmented cortical granules, and (3) the shape of the macronucleus. The complete small subunit rDNA (SSU rDNA) of 19 further representatives of the genus Stentor was sequenced to examine the phylogenetic relationships within this genus and to determine the taxonomic value of these main characteristics. The detailed phylogenetic analyses yielded a separation of all species possessing a single compact macronucleus from those species with an “elongated” macronucleus (moniliform or vermiform). The data also indicate that the uptake of algae as well as the loss of pigmentation happened independently in different lineages. Furthermore, a high level of intraspecific variation within several species was found. Thus, S. muelleri and S. (sp.) cf. katashimai appear to represent distinct species and S. multiformis is composed of a species complex.

Aim: The main purpose of this article is to present the results of numerical calculations of evacuation from the road tunnel in the case of fire in three different scenarios. The research is based on the Mont Blanc tunnel catastrophe in 1999. Three tunnel models were generated on this basis: − a model corresponding to the actual conditions in the tunnel during the 1999 fire, − a model reflecting conditions after modifications associated with the tunnel’s redevelopment and its reopening in 2002, − a model referring to the the requirements of Directive 2004/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council binding in the EU. Introduction: In the article, the authors focused on the influence of the distance between shelters or evacuation exits in a road tunnel on the results of self-rescue actions in the event of fire. Tunnels have limited space, so a fire leads to rapid changes in the environment’s parameters and the occurrence of critical conditions, which can be dangerous for human life. Therefore, the distribution of evacuation exits influences the duration of self-rescue actions. Methodology: Numerical calculations were conducted for the purpose of defining the Required Safe Escape Time TREST. The Available Safe Escape Time TASET was determined on the basis of the analysis of the fire in the Mont Blanc tunnel in 1999. The evacuation process is considered safe when the so-called safe escape time criterion is met, i.e. when dependency TASET ≥ TREST is met. Conclusions: The results of the numerical calculation confirmed that the modifications after the Mont Blanc fire could ensure safe evacuation in the event of a fire similar to that of 1999. Moreover, in the case of the two remaining fire scenarios (the distance between shelters is 300 m and the distance between evacuation exits to the parallel evacuation tunnel is 500 m), there is no possibility to conduct safe self-rescue actions. Evacuation time largely depends on the movement speed of evacuees, thus the distribution of evacuation exits or shelters should be determined during the design phase taking into consideration the most dangerous scenario, so that each tunnel user would have proper conditions for safe evacuation.

Deep level centers in GaAs implanted with light ions (H$\text{}^{+}$, He$\text{}^{+}$) were studied by means of deep level transient spectroscopy, double correlation deep level transient spectroscopy and capacity voltage carrier profiling directly after the implantation process and after annealing at various temperatures. Five different electron traps with energy positions between 0.13-0.75 eV are detected. From the evaluated defect production and carrier trapping yields and their annealing behavior we conclude that each of these traps efficiently contributes to the trapping of free carriers. The EL2 defect is created in too low concentrations in order to significantly account for the removal of free carriers.

The main purpose of applying Time Variable Gain (TVG) in active sonars with digital signal processing is to reduce dynamic range of echo signal and adapt it to the dynamic range of the analogue to digital conversion. With high transmission losses level, the dynamic range of the input signal in long range sonars can be very high and even exceed 200 dB. When chirp sounding signals with matched filtration are used, sonars can reach very long ranges. The article presents optimisation of TVG control for long range sonars. It also looks at the influence of chirp sounding signal compression, the result of digital matched filtration, for the TVG controlling. The examples of obtained results are presented.

Over recent decades, the Arctic region has been subjected to rapid climate change stemming from global warming. The advance of Atlantic waters to high latitudes is notable. The increased abundance of fish, such as cod (Gadus morhua) and haddock (Melanogrammus aeglefinus), has been reported near the western coast of Spitsbergen and entering fjords together with Atlantic waters. This study used multifrequency acoustics to measure fish distribution and abundance in 2013–2014 in two Arctic fjords, the colder Hornsund, which is typically of Arctic character, and the warmer Kongsfjorden, which is more of Atlantic character. The study revealed a bimodal fish size distribution with larger fish in the deep parts of fjords, and smaller fish distributed in more shallow waters. An evident increase in the abundance of large fish, most probably Atlantic cod, was observed in Hornsund and especially in Kongsfjorden in 2014 in comparison to 2013. The intense inflow of Atlantic water on the shelf in 2014 is suggested as the explanation for this phenomenon.

Opis:
Empirical evidence shows that a strong correlation exists between the flexion angles of the distal and proximal interphalangeal (D.I.P., P.I.P.) joints of the human finger. Several authors measured this functional dependence, stating that the interdependence of D.I.P. and P.I.P. flexion is different for healthy individuals and patients displaying pathologies. The purpose of our study is to find an analytical expression for this correlation. Methods: Following closely the anatomical in situ relations, we developed a two-dimensional kinematical model which expresses analytically the D.I.P.–P.I.P. angle correlation. Numerical values for the model were extracted from one healthy and one pathological case data set. Results: The analytical form of the model allows for any P.I.P. angle not only to calculate the corresponding D.I.P. angle, but after first order differentiation with respect to the P.I.P. angle, it also shows the rate of change of the D.I.P. flexion. The model reproduces well the differences in the angular correlation of D.I.P. flexion of the two healthy-pathological data sets. Displaying the rate of change of D.I.P. flexion versus P.I.P. flexion provides an additional, clear-cut discriminatory tool between normal and pathological states. Conclusions: Information on differences between normal and pathological flexion of fingers is more pronounced and easier accessible from the derivatives of the D.I.P.–P.I.P. flexion behaviour than from direct angular correlation data. The analytical form of our model allows one to establish the rate of change of the D.I.P. angles, resulting in a better analysis of the situations at hand.

Opis:
One of the ways to decrease thermal conductivity is nano structurization. Cobalt triantimonide (CoSb3) samples with added indium or tellurium were prepared by the direct fusion technique from high purity elements. Ingots were pulverized and re-compacted to form electrodes. Then, the pulsed plasma in liquid (PPL) method was applied. All materials were consolidated using rapid spark plasma sintering (SPS). For the analysis, methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) with a laser flash apparatus (LFA) were used. For density measurement, the Archimedes’ method was used. Electrical conductivity was measured using a standard four-wire method. The Seebeck coefficient was calculated to form measured Seebeck voltage in the sample placed in a temperature gradient. The preparation method allowed for obtaining CoSb3 nanomaterial with significantly lower thermal conductivity (10 Wm–1K–1 for pure CoSb3 and 3 Wm–1K–1 for the nanostructured sample in room temperature (RT)). The size of crystallites (from SEM observations) in the powders prepared was about 20 nm, joined into larger agglomerates. The Seebeck coefficient, α, was about –200μVK–1 in the case of both dopants, In and Te, in microsized material and about −400 μK−1 for the nanomaterial at RT. For pure CoSb3 , α was about 150 μVK−1 and it stood at −50 μVK−1 for nanomaterial at RT. In bulk nanomaterial samples, due to a decrease in electrical conductivity and inversion of the Seebeck coefficient, there was no increase in ZT values and the ZT for the nanosized material was below 0.02 in the measured temperature range, while for microsized In-doped sample it reached maximum ZT = 0.7 in (600K).

Spectral and temperature dependences of equilibrium and non-equi-intersubband light absorption in the mid-infrared spectral range were studied in selectively doped asymmetrical tunnel-coupled GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells. The temporal evolution of the absorption studied by means of a picosecond pump-probe technique was found to have a biexponential character. The fast decay times are determined by intersubband electron relaxation due to electron scattering by optical phonons and impurities. The presence of long decay times in transient mid-infrared absorption is probably connected with electron transitions from the states in barrier (X and L valleys as well as deep centers) to the states of the quantum well. Experimentally determined intersubband scattering times are compared with the calculated ones.

Antimony telluride (Sb2 Te3 ) is an intermetallic compound crystallizing in a hexagonal lattice with R-3m space group. It creates a c lose packed structure of an ABCABC type. As intrinsic semiconductor characterized by excellent electrical properties, Sb2 Te3 is widely used as a low-temperature thermoelectric material. At the same time, due to unusual properties (strictly connected with the structure), antimony telluride exhibits nonlinear optical properties, including saturable absorption. Nanostructurization, elemental doping and possibilities of synthesis Sb2 Te3 in various forms (polycrystalline, single crystal or thin film) are the most promising methods for improving thermoelectric properties of Sb2Te3.Applications of Sb2 Te3 in optical devices (e.g. nonlinear modulator, in particular saturable absorbers for ultrafast lasers) are also interesting. The antimony telluride in form of bulk polycrystals and layers for thermoelectric and optoelectronic applications respectively were used. For optical applications thin layers of the material were formed and studied. Synthesis and structural characterization of Sb2 Te3 were also presented here. The anisotropy (packed structure) and its influence on thermoelectric properties have been performed. Furthermore, preparation and characterization of Sb2 Te3 thin films for optical uses have been also made.

Materials of the Y-Ba-Cu-O (melt-textured $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$-based materials or MT-YBCO) and Mg-B-O ($MgB_{2}$-based materials) systems with high superconducting performance, which can be attained due to the formation of regularly distributed nanostructural defects and inhomogeneities in their structure can be effectively used in cryogenic technique, in particular in fault current limiters and electrical machines (electromotors, generators, pumps for liquid gases, etc.). The developed processes of high-temperature (900-800°C) oxygenation under elevated pressure (16 MPa) of MT-YBCO and high-pressure (2 GPa) synthesis of $MgB_{2}$-based materials allowed us to attain high superconductive (critical current densities, upper critical fields, fields of irreversibility, trapped magnetic fields) and mechanical (hardness, fracture toughness, Young modulus) characteristics. It has been shown that the effect of materials properties improvement in the case of MT-YBCO was attained due to the formation of high twin density (20-22 $μm^{-1}$), prevention of macrocracking and reduction (by a factor of 4.5) of microcrack density, and in the case of $MgB_{2}$-based materials due to the formation of oxygen-enriched as compared to the matrix phase fine-dispersed Mg-B-O inhomogeneities as well as inclusions of higher borides with near-$MgB_{12}$ stoichiometry in the Mg-B-O matrix (with 15-37 nm average grain sizes). The possibility is shown to obtain the rather high $T_{c}$ (37 K) and critical current densities in materials with $MgB_{12}$ matrix (with 95% of shielding fraction as calculated from the resistant curve).
