    For many years, the Polish Academy of Sciences has been undertaking activities aimed at increasing the international importance of Polish scientific research by establishing cooperation with international scientific institutions and supporting the participation of Polish scientists in international research programs. Currently, the Polish Academy of Sciences has six scientific centers abroad – in Paris, Rome, Vienna, Berlin, Brussels and Kiev. These institutions have different origins. The oldest ones, in Rome and Paris, continue the tradition of Polish emigration from the 19th century. These traditions are also referred to by the much younger station in Vienna, which to some extent has continued the activities of Polish diaspora organizations operating in this area since the beginning of the 20th century. The centers in Berlin and Kiev are relatively young. The first was established in 1996 as the Representation of the German Academic Exchange Service and transformed in 2006 into the Historical Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Berlin. The youngest of the centers has been operating in Kiev since 2013 under the name of the Representation “Polish Academy of Sciences” in Kiev. The Office for the Promotion of Science PolSCA in Brussels, established in 2006, has a different character. Due to its location, the specificity of this facility consists in developing scientific and scientific-technical cooperation through the promotion and expert support of Polish partners in the framework programs of the European Union. The activities of these institutions emphasize the presence of science, culture and intellectual achievements of Poland in the European research area, which is important for building the image of our country abroad. The Polish Academy of Sciences scientific centers are therefore a kind of scientific attaché of the Republic of Poland, the more so as Polish embassies in these six countries do not have such an attaché. The article analyzes the administrative, financial and legal conditions of the station's operation and the expectations towards their substantive activity from the point of view of the Academy's management.

    Artykuły opublikowane w tej książce opracowane zostały na podstawie referatów wygłoszonych w czasie sesji naukowej z cyklu Dwugłos Nauki, zatytułowanej „Dusza – umysł – wolna wola”, współorganizowanej przez Oddział Polskiej Akademii Nauk w Poznaniu i Wydział Teologiczny Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza. Sesja odbyła się w siedzibie Oddziału PAN w Poznaniu w dniu 27 listopada 2014 r. Sesje naukowe z cyklu Dwugłos Nauki organizowane są w Poznaniu od 1995 r. i tradycyjnie podejmują problematykę o znaczeniu fundamentalnym, starając się przedstawić poglądy wybitnych przedstawicieli nauk ścisłych i przyrodniczych oraz filozofi i i teologii. Temat, który podjęliśmy w 2014 r., jest tyle niełatwy, ile kluczowy dla odpowiedzi na pytanie o istotę człowieczeństwa. W ramach sesji chcieliśmy skonfrontować poglądy naukowe psychologa poznawczego i neurobiologa z jednej strony, oraz teologa i filozofa z drugiej, na temat materialnego i niematerialnego umysłu człowieka. Konfrontacja ta miała na celu uzyskanie bardziej klarownej interpretacji takich pojęć, jak dusza, świadomość, wolna wola, będących dla wielu kwintesencją człowieczeństwa. Z umysłowością powiązane są także pojęcia moralności, inteligencji i charakteru człowieka. (Z Wprowadzenia)

    We present a new interactive procedure for multiobjective optimization problems (MOO), which involves robust ordinal regression in contraction of the preference cone in the objective space. The most preferred solution is achieved by means of a systematic dialogue with the decision maker (DM) during which (s)he species pairwise comparisons of some non-dominated solutions from a current sample. The origin of the cone is located at a reference point chosen by the DM. It is formed by all directions of isoquants of the achievement scalarizing functions compatible with the pairwise comparisons of non-dominated solutions provided by the DM. The compatibility is assured by robust ordinal regression, i.e. the DM's statements concerning strict or weak preference relations for pairs of compared solutions are represented by all compatible sets of weights of the achievement scalarizing function. In successive iterations, when new pairwise comparisons of solutions are provided, the cone is contracted and gradually focused on a subregion of the Pareto optimal set of greatest interest. The DM is allowed to change the reference point and the set of pairwise comparisons at any stage of the method. Such preference information does not need much cognitive e ort on the part of the DM. The phases of preference elicitation and cone contraction alternate until the DM nds at least one satisfactory solution, or there is no such solution for the current problem setting.
