Opis:
Aim. Chronic reccuring head and facial pain can be very difficult for successful treatment. Such a pain can be in some rare cases Sluder’s sphenopalatine ganglion neuralgia. The aim of the study was to obtain the pain relief by local treatment in patients with Sluder’s sphenopalatine ganglion neuralgia. Methods. We described three cases of Sluder’s neuralgia among all the seventeen patients with reccuring head and face pain that were seen in our department. In all these cases 4% Xylocaine was applied intranasally, into the region of shenopalatine ganglion, behind the posterior tip of the middle turbinate four times for ten minutes. According to Kern, the diagnosis of Sluder’s neuralgia was confirmed only in cases where local anesthetic block of the sphenopaltine ganglion was successful. It means the patients were pain-free for at least an hour after application of Xylocaine, so they were qualified for phenolization and 88% phenol was applied on the cotton carriers (number of the applications depended on the patient). Results. The total relief of pain of different duration was obtained in all the presented cases. Conclusion. The relief of pain obtained by intranasal phenolization of sphenopalatine ganglion in three patients shows it could be the effective treatment of Sluder’s neuralgia. The patients were totally free from the pain and accompanying symptoms like nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, epiphora or conjunctivitis. The relief period was different but the patients were satisfied with the effectiveness and simplicity of the treatment. They did not need to take the additional medications for months and were able to continue work.

Opis:
The aim of the study was to answer the question whether and to what extent foreign currency loans may pose a threat to the stability of the banking system in Poland. The reason for exploring this problem is the situation in which Swiss franc mortgage loan parties found themselves. The problem concerned not only Poland, but also appeared in Hungary, Spain and Ukraine. The aforementioned countries have adopted various strategies in order to solve this issue. Currently, there is a discussion in Poland over the form of solution to the situation in which the Swiss franc debtors have found themselves.             This article presents the following hypotheses:             The credit policy of banks, which includes mortgage lending in Swiss francs, was a typical action in terms of risk management which in this case was two-way in nature. In addition, banks did not have the opportunity to significantly impose its policies on customers, as evidenced by the degree of market development and market competition.             Conversion of mortgage loans according to the CHF historic exchange rate can affect the stability of the banking system.             The article presents the main types and sources of bank risks with particular emphasis on credit risk and foreign exchange risk. In addition, the paper shows the importance of this kind of risk in the context of the systemic stability of the banking sector in a situation of exchange rate stability disturbances. Verification of the research hypothesis was based on literature studies and analysis of statistical data.

Opis:
Essential oils (EOs) of Gaultheria procumbens were obtained by hydrodistillation with the yield of 1.30% ± 0.05 (v/dw) for leaves and 2.68% ± 0.08 (v/dw) for fruits. The GC-FID/MS analysis led to the identification of 64 volatile components, among which 27 were found in leaf EO, 49 in fruit EO, and 59 analytes were detected for the first time in G. procumbens. Methyl salicylate, which is known as a potent anti-inflammatory agent, was the dominant component making up to 97.5% and 99.8% of the total fruit and leaf EOs, respectively. The remaining volatiles of the leaves included mainly monoterpenes (α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene), methyl-o-anisate, massoilactone, spiro[4,5]decane-1-one, and aliphatic alcohols (heptan-2-ol, octan-1-ol), while the fruit EO contained apart from the dominant aliphatic and aromatic alcohols (benzyl alcohol, heptan-2-ol, p-cymen-7-ol) also carboxylic acids (3-hydroxyphenylacetic acid, heptanoic acid, octanoic acid) and aldehydes (hexanal, furfural, pent-4-enal). The antibacterial activity of the EOs was evaluated using a microdilution broth method against twelve reference strains, as well as clinical and environmental isolates. Differences between activity parameters of both EOs were not statistically significant (p > 0.05) for most tested bacteria. On the other hand, both EOs were significantly more effective against Gram-negative (MIC, 8.2-10.0 mg/mL) than Gram-positive bacteria (MIC, 13.5-16.7 mg/mL). Leaves and especially fruits of G. procumbens cultivated in Poland were proved valuable sources of methyl salicylate-rich EOs of moderate antibacterial activity, which, therefore, could partly explain the traditional use of the plant materials and the EOs in the treatment of bacterial infections-related inflammatory disorders.
