    The article presents a modern protobiological theory based on the classical archetype. It connects the issues of origins of life with the theory of the hierarchy of matter and recognizes that error correction occurs within hierarchical and dynamic living systems. The paper briefly reproduces Morowitz-Smith prebiotic scenario. It highlights the importance of rTCA for theory, and the observation that the transition from a planet “without life” to a planet “with life” is a thermodynamic problem. Reflections on the philosophical foundations and worldview consequences of the theory are presented. The book and articles by the authors are crafted in a holistic approach and are critical towards the premature (and excessive) extrapolation of Darwinian selection as a means of explaining the process of abiogenesis.

    The aim of this article is to examine whether the “seven myths” identified and presented by Uroboros in “In venenoso Dracone …,” more than thirty years ago still function in the academic community. It also aims to address whether there are indications that this state has undergone a change. It seems that naturalists found that excessive adherence to a physicalist style of doing science severely limits research work. At the same time, scientists often grapple with the consequences of implementing physicalism and stumble while addressing philosophical issues.

    Niniejszy tekst powstał na podstawie wywiadów przeprowadzonych z uczonymi Caltechu (Pasadena, USA) w 2018 roku. Rozmowy dotyczyły typów współczesnych teorii biogenezy oraz roli przesłanek filozoficznych w nich przyjmowanych. Badacze odnieśli się także do problematyki popularyzacji nauki. Światopogląd naukowy kształtowany jest bowiem (oraz utrwalany) przez publikacje popularyzatorskie. Odpowiedzieli również na pytania odnoszące się do osobistych przekonań dotyczących początków życia na Ziemi oraz wpływu tychże na pracę ich samych a także grup badawczych, do których należą.
    The text was created on the basis of interviews with Caltech scholars (Pasadena, USA) in 2018. The talks concerned various contemporary theories of biogenesis and the role of their philosophical premises. The researchers also addressed the issue of popularizing science. The worldview is shaped (and established) by popularizing publications. They also answered the questions how their personal beliefs influenced on research.

    Various types of metal implants, both in Poland and worldwide, are mainly manufactured from stainless steel due to their biocompatibility, strength, and relatively low price. However, any such procedure involves the risk of peri-implant infection, stimulated, among other things, by the formation of a bacterial biofilm on the surface of the implant. In this paper, several methods of modifying the surface of steel for medical applications were proposed, such as mechanical polishing, electropolishing, sandblasting, and the application of a thin surface layer. This was followed by a series of physicochemical and biological tests. The results indicate that the titanium nitride coating improved corrosion resistance and reduced bacterial adhesion on the surface. No significant improvement in abrasion was observed, and the adhesion of the coating closely depended on the method of preparation.
    Implanty metalowe, zarówno w Polsce, jak i na świecie, produkowane są głównie ze stali nierdzewnej ze względu na jej biokompatybilność, wytrzymałość i stosunkowo niską cenę. Jednak każdy tego rodzaju zabieg wiąże się z ryzykiem powstania zakażenia okołowszczepowego, stymulowanego m.in. powstawaniem biofilmu bakteryjnego na powierzchni implantu. W pracy zaproponowano kilka metod modyfikacji powierzchni stali do zastosowań medycznych, takich jak polerowanie mechaniczne, elektropolerowanie, piaskowanie oraz nałożenie cienkiej warstwy powierzchniowej. Następnie przeprowadzono szereg badań fizykochemicznych i biologicznych. Wyniki wskazują, że powłoka azotku tytanu poprawiła odporność na korozję oraz ograniczyła adhezję bakterii na powierzchni. Nie zaobserwowano znaczącej poprawy ścieralności, a adhezja powłoki ściśle zależała od metody jej przygotowania.

    In this study we designed and synthesized sixteen new derivatives of 7-amino-4-methylquinolin-2(1H)-one with potential anticancer activity. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR. The activity of novel substances was evaluated by cell viability assay and wound healing assay. In vitro tests for series of sixteen novel compounds were performed. The results showed that examined compounds are selective for cancer cells, but their activity for various types of cancer is different. Three of new compounds presented ability to inhibit cells migration. The novel compounds constitute a good starting point for further studies and optimization of structure for new therapeutically effective anti-cancerous drugs. Seven compounds, which showed the highest rate of cell inhibition, were selected for further studies.

    In this study we designed and synthesized twenty new derivatives of 2-(4-benzoyl-1-piperazinyl)-quinoline and 2-(4-cinnamoyl-1-piperazinyl)-quinoline with potential anticancer activity. The structures of synthesized compounds were confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and MS spectrometry. The activity of novel compounds was evaluated in the cell viability assay as well as in the wound healing assay. Presented data show that examined substances have anticancer activity in cell culture. Seven compounds which showed a high rate of cell growth inhibition were selected for further studies. Three of them strongly reduced growth of B16F10 cells. The novel compounds constitute a good base for further studies and optimization of structure for new therapeutically effective anti-cancerous drugs.
