Opis:
Background: Throughout history, the world has witnessed natural disasters affecting businesses and societies with varying degrees of disruption. COVID-19 (henceforth C19) constituted a significant system shock and a stark reminder of the fragility and sensitive nature of supply chains. The pandemic has exerted considerable societal and economic pressure and has had an adverse impact on food supply chains in particular. Many food processing operations were forced to alter activities or close temporarily due to outbreaks. Societal lockdowns, travel restrictions, business closures and quarantine have led to structural changes in the productivity of economies and impacted the mental health and financial wellbeing of citizens. Methods: We present a critical review of the literature to explore the impact of C19 on the food supply chain. We collected data from journal articles retrieved from a leading scientific database (i.e., Scopus), books, chapters, conference proceedings, reports, and a variety of Internet websites. For the literature search, we used the following words; „COVID-19" and „food". Results and conclusions: The findings of the review suggest that the C19 pandemic poses unprecedented challenges for food supply chains. We reveal that C19 has raised food insecurity and food safety concerns, increased supply chain and logistics costs and radically changed consumer behavior. On the positive side, the pandemic has improved awareness of food waste and the importance of self-grown foods. We generated nine research propositions to foster future academic research. Our study also highlighted the need to advance this literature and calls for increased attention from the supply chain management and logistics community to further analyse and quantify the impact of C19 on the food chain.
C19 spowodował obniżenie bezpieczeństwa łańcucha dostaw żywności, zwiększył koszty logistyki i radykalnie zmienił upodobania konsumentów.

Opis:
The increase in cases of food borne illnesses related to street vended fruit salad in developing countries is of serious public health concern. This study was, therefore, conducted on street-vended fruit salad, to determine their microbial quality. A total of twenty (20) fruit samples, comprising five each of fresh Apple (Malus domestica Borkh), Pineapple (Ananas comosus L.), Pawpaw (Carica papaya) and Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) were collected from 3 different locations (Watt, Marian and Goldie) in Calabar and were evaluated by way of standard plate techniques, for microbial contaminants. The specific microbial genera were enumerated on appropriate selective media and identified using standard identification parameters with the aid of identification and taxonomic manuals. The results revealed that the mean total bacterial counts of all the fruit samples ranged from 1.07 × 103 to 3.4 × 103CFU/g, whereas, the mean total coliform counts ranged from 0.9 × 103 to 2.05 × 103 CFU/g, respectively. The differences in the mean total heterotrophic counts and coliform counts recorded for the fruits collected from the respective food vendors was statistically insignificant (P>0.01). Bacteria isolated include Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella sp, Shigella sp, Proteus mirabilis and Escherichia coli. The presence of coliform bacteria and other microbial contaminants in numbers exceeding the recommended microbiological standards is a reflection of unwholesome product, hence the need for proper microbiological safety analysis of fruit salad prepared for human consumption. Therefore, consumer’s awareness on the dangers of consuming pathogen contaminated foods and the need to insist on properly processed/stored sliced produce, needs to be re-awakened.

Opis:
Nanocrystalline Cu-Zn ferrites have been synthesized using precursor method. Cu-Zn ferrites were formed at low temperature without any impurities. The particle sizes were observed to decrease from 60 nm to 50 nm with increasing non-magnetic Zn doping. Cu is used to decrease the sintering temperature. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and IR analysis of Cu-Zn revealed the formation of Single-Phase Spinel structure at very low annealing temperature. The particle sizes observed from XRD is very well in agreement with SEM analysis. Cu-Zn ferrite nanoparticles were observed to be dependent on the particle size. Saturation (Ms) and Remanence (Mr) magnetization of ferrites increases due to the modifications occurred among the A-B, A-A and B-B interactions of Spinel structure. The Coercive force (Hc) decreases with increase of Zn ions concentration.

Opis:
Improved Blowing and Suction System (IBSS) is a novel concept that can be effectively implemented in future aircraft to improve the aerodynamic performance of aircraft wings. The proposed IBSS consists of a regular wing without its secondary control surfaces and with a Pump. The injection and suction system is used to create additional flow without disturbing the main flow over the aerofoil which effectively delays the boundary layer separation. The injection and suction areas are kept constant and they are located just below the maximum thickness point and suction is created close to the trailing edge. This paper presents a detailed numerical analysis of the proposed IBSS and the study shows that the stalling angle of attack is increased by 60% while the coefficient of lift is increased 37.5% compared to the baseline aerofoil. Also, the commercially used coflow jet (CFJ) method stalls at a 12° angle of attack whereas with the proposed IBSS method the stall occurs at a 16° angle of attack. The stalling angle is thus delayed by 33%, thus increasing the aerodynamic performance of the wing as compared to the existing methods. Also, any malfunction in IBSS does not significantly affect the performance of the aircraft. The implementation of IBSS will lead to a reduction in the weight of the aircraft and the elimination of secondary control surfaces.

Opis:
Water is essential for all life forms and the provision of safe drinking water to the populace cannot be overemphasized. This study examined the bacteriological quality of two sources of water supplies in Mubi, North-eastern Nigeria. A total of 72 water samples were analysed. These include 30 from 10 brands of sachet water and 42 from 21 boreholes in seven different wards of Mubi. Heterotrophic plate count (HPC) was determined by pour plate technique and the total coliform count was determined by 3-3-3 regimen using most probable number (MPN) technique. Escherichia coli and other isolates were identified by standard protocols. The mean HPC for both borehole and sachet water samples were variable and ranged from 3.3 × 102 – 4.7 × 104 cfu/ml for sachet water and 1.1 – 6.0 × 104 cfu/ml for borehole water samples. The HPC of borehole water samples were significantly higher than those of sachet water (P = 0.006). The results showed that the mean MPN index for sachet water samples from brand HCM, KGN, OYM and YNS were zero (0). Brand UDS had the highest mean MPN index (1966.7), while other brands had low mean MPN index that ranged from 3.0 -9.1. In the same vein, the mean MPN index of borehole water samples were high, variable and ranged from 3.7 – 1750. Statistically, the mean MPN index/100ml of borehole water samples were significantly higher than those of sachet water samples (P = 0.006). A total of 49 non-repetitive bacterial species were isolated from the two sources of water. These include E. coli (30), Enterobacter spp (3), P. aeruginosa (5) and Citrobacter spp (11). The distributions of bacterial isolates from the two sources of water showed that E. coli was detected in two brands of sachet water SDK and DYJ and 20 representative boreholes in all the locations, while other organisms were variably distributed. The presence of these organisms constitutes public health significance.

Opis:
Nowadays, much of the crimes committed were unreported to the authorities. Given this fact, the study presents the development of a Crime Management and Reporting System through online and even offline and at the same time is the active participation of the citizens. The idea draws its motivation from the inconvenience of going to the police station and personal belief of the weak investigative capabilities of the authorities to resolve petty crimes and limited spreading of crime information to the community. The project specifically looks into the crime detection and prevention. This study aims to provide an overview of the investigative process and, in doing so, identify effective and efficient approaches to the investigation and detection of the volume of crimes. The review is particularly aimed to highlight the research evidence those investigative practices and actions that are likely to lead to a positive outcome. The development of software includes the process of brainstorming and planning, requirements analysis, system analysis and designs, implementation and testing, deployment, and maintenance. The criteria of evaluation of software quality were adapted in ISO/IEC 25010:20011. This also shows that distance is also a factor that influences greatly how crimes are being handled with many crimes going unreported as a result. Crime Management and Reporting System would really help the complainant and the authority to communicate privately and easily with regards to the reported issue. In addition, it would be easier for the complainant to report a witnessed crime without the fear of getting involved in the problems because of the security that the only authorized user can see the report. Based on the findings, the researchers recommend the following for further study: widening the limit of the system by considering other cities; a generic platform for keeping human records from birth till death, deploying this sort of platform will serve as a source of information on persons from various states within the country and even those outside. Verification using Biometric is highly recommended to enhance the security of data stored in the system. This increases the restriction on access to the system, thus unauthorized users have no access to the system. Face recognition technology can be added.

The origin of reptiles in the tetrapod footprint record has always been a debated topic, despite the great potential of fossiliferous ichnosites to shed much light on reptile origins when compared to the much less extensive skeletal record. This is in part due to an unclear ichnotaxonomy of the earliest tracks attributed to reptiles that has resulted in unreliable trackmaker attributions. We comprehensively revise the earliest supposed reptile ichnotaxon, Notalacerta missouriensis, based on a neotype and a selection of well-preserved material from the type locality and other sites. A synapomorphy-based track-trackmaker attribution suggests eureptiles and, more specifically, ́protorothyridids ́ such as Paleothyris as the most probable trackmakers. A revision of the entire Pennsylvanian-Cisuralian record of this ichnotaxon unveils an unexpected abundance and a wide palaeogeographical distribution. The earliest unequivocal occurrence of Notalacerta is in the middle Bashkirian (early Langsettian) at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Joggins Fossil Cliffs (Joggins, Nova Scotia, Canada). This occurrence also coincides with the earliest occurrence of reptile body fossils (Hylonomus lyelli), which are found at the same site. Notalacerta is abundant and widely distributed during the Bashkirian, mostly in sediments deposited in tidal palaeoenvironments, and less common in the Moscovian and Kasimovian. During the Gzhelian and Asselian, Notalacerta occurrences are unknown, but it occurs again during the Sakmarian and is widespread but not abundant during the Artinskian, mostly in fully continental palaeoenvironments.

Background. In health terms, consuming fluoride is well recognised to be a double-edged sword. Consumption of optimal amounts is beneficial to health, however an excess constitutes a health hazard. Objectives. To assess the prevalence of skeletal fluorosis in fishermen from the Kutch coast, Gujarat, India. Materials and method. A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted on 653 fishermen from the Kutch District, Gujarat, India, from October 2014 to December 2014. Clinical skeletal fluorosis was assessed using three diagnostic tests. Drinking water fluoride concentrations in different regions of the study area were determined. General information regarding age, gender and adverse habits were also collected. The Chi square test was used for comparisons and the confidence level and critical p-value were set at 95% and 5% respectively. Results. Fluoride concentrations in water from the study area ranged between 3.4- 6.9 ppm. The prevalence of skeletal fluorosis was 30.3%, out of which, the majority of the subjects had mild skeletal fluorosis (18.4%). This condition was found to be significantly associated with age and gender along with tobacco and alcohol consumption; depending on the habit’s duration. Conclusion. Being a public health problem in the fishermen community, skeletal fluorosis requires a-priori attention. Measures for preventing this disease should be undertaken on a communitywide basis.

Opis:
This paper aims to investigate the corrosion behavior of zirconium carbide (ZrC) reinforced Al – Si metal matrix composites (MMCs) in a mixture of acidic solution using weight loss method. The composites are prepared by powder metallurgy method. Al-12Si-xZrC composites containing 0, 5, and 10 weight percentage of ZrC particles are compacted in a die set assembly and sintered in an inert gas muffle furnace. The acidic solutions used for corrosion are 1 N HCl, 1 N H2SO4 and 1 N HNO3. The corrosion characteristics of Al-12Si-xZrC composites and the pure Al were experimentally evaluated. The corrosion test was carried out at different weight proportions of the samples in various concentrations of the acid such as 1 N HCl, 1 N H2SO4 and 1 N HNO3 for different exposure time (i.e., 24 h, 72 h, 144 h and 216 h), respectively. The results specified that corrosion rate of composites was lower than that of base metal Al under the corrosive atmosphere, regardless of exposure time and acidic solutions used as corrodents. Al-12Si-xZrC composites become more corrosion resistant as the ZrC content is increased. This is because of the development of stable oxide layer above the specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirms the degree of attack of acidic solution on the surface of the examined material.
