Opis:
Energy production from renewable energy sources (RES) is conditioned by, among others, environmental and economic factors, that may create disproportions between regions, as to the energy production from RES. The aim of the study is an evaluation of diversification of the level of development of RES in regions in Poland in the years 2008-2014 on the basis of comparative analysis, and especially the methods of linear ordering of objects, based on synthetic variables. Determining paternless measure of development and taxonomical measure of development, making use of a pattern from a sample, allowed to create a ranking of objects according to the level of development of analyzed phenomenon and to select groups of regions with similar level of development of RES. In the performed analysis, the analyzed objects are regions in Poland, that were characterized by chosen features describing the level of energy production from RES.

Opis:
The spread of tea was accompanied by research on the properties of its different species. In the 19th century the interrelationships between the proportions of individual components, the time of gathering tea leaves, and the ways of tea making, which determined the taste effects were clearly discerned. The best teas were considered those prepared in a samovar.Initially, tea was drunk in small bowls without handles, silver cups being rare. Milk was served for tea. The fashion of serving it in small jugs dates back to the 17th century. It was introduced by Madame de Sevigne. In the 19th century milk was replaced by cream. An obligatory component of the tea set was the sugar bowl. In the 1760s, tea measuring spoons came in widespread use. Their prototypes were medication dispensing spoons. They had the shapes of little shovels, shells, acorns, or eagle heads. Sugar tongs were introduced in ca. 1700.Silver teapots appeared on the English market in the 17th century. Depending on the needs, jugs for hot water or teapots with burners were used. From the 1690s, small teapots were introduced which stood on an alcohol burner. Water was also heated in bulieras(kinds of kettles/samovars) put on the table. The development of modern design after WW2 somewhat stopped the development of traditional tea sets. However, we are now witnessing the return to former designs and forms. The fashion for unused objects like samovars is confi ned, however, to presentingthem in the interiors, where they perform decorative or sometimes memorial functions.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of the research over the measurement of the progress in the realization of the objectives specified in “Europe 2020 - a strategy for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth” in 2016 in comparison with 2010. The analysis availed itself of the statistical data of Eurostat which describes the main indicators of the strategy for all member states of the European Union. The available empirical data allowed for constructing a synthetic measure reflecting the progress in realizing the objectives specified in the Strategy. The analysis of the values that the said measure assumed became a basis for creating a rating of EU member states for two distinct years that were subject to scrutiny. Also, there was specified the variation in the value of the said measure and the changes in the positions occupied by particular states in the mentioned rating. What was also conducted was a cluster analysis, which allowed for dividing the scrutinized countries into groups in case they are described by more than one property. Except for this and as compared to all the previous works on the subject, the method of the construction of the synthetic measure was considerably sharpened.

Istnieje wiele nurtujących pytań w obszarze roli żelaza w patogenezie i progresji niewydolności serca. Choć męczliwości mięśni szkieletowych i nietolerancji wysiłku fizycznego w niewydolności serca towarzyszy niedobór żelaza, a suplementacja żelaza takim chorym poprawia funkcję mięśni szkieletowych, niejasne są dokładne mechanizmy tłumaczące te obserwacje kliniczne.
Iron metabolism is fundamental for homeostasis of the whole organism. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide that affects more than one-third of the global population, with the highest prevalence in older people and those with chronic diseases. Deregulation of iron metabolism leads to dysfunction not only in all of haematopoetic cell lines (erythrocytes, cells involved in immune response and thrombocytes), but also in cells of high energy demand, such as cardiomyocytes and skeletal myocytes. There are many issues that still need to be addressed in the field of pathogenesis and progression of heart failure. Although skeletal muscle fatigability and exercise intolerance in heart failure is assisted by iron deficiency, and iron supplementation improves muscle function, the exact mechanisms of these clinical observations remain unclear however.

Opis:
The significance of scientific journals in the dissemination and creation of science cannot be overestimated. For over 350 years, journals have been a crucial platform for the prompt publication of research findings and the exchange of scientific ideas among research centres worldwide. Journals serve not only to disseminate scientific achievements but also to provide researchers with the substantive base for new discoveries and achievements. The aim of this article is to examine the present state and future potential of regional social science journals in terms of presenting and disseminating research findings, as well as promoting international collaboration. The objective is to achieve this through a comprehensive analysis of the Journal of Pedagogy, Innovation and New Technologies, which has been a source of daily concerns, problems, and satisfaction for us for almost a decade. The analysis method employed involves examining texts published in IJPINT and the documents available to the editors. The article addresses the following questions: (1) In what circumstances was the journal created and what priorities determined its formula and organizational solutions? (2) What are your publication achievements in terms of quantity and quality? (3) What has hindered and what has supported the work of the journal and the implementation of its mission? The purpose of this position paper is to stimulate further discussion on the condition of social science journals and the type of government support they receive.

Background: Cystic fibrosis(CF),despite much progress in therapy, remains the disease which affects nutrition. Nutrition is an important prognostic factor of the outcome of the disease. We want to evaluate physical development, nutrition and body composition in CF children. Material and methods: 75 children diagnosed with CF (9 months to 18 years old) were included into the study. 33 healthy children (9 months to 18 years old) constituted the control group. The study consisted of 2 stages. In the first the differences between groups were investigated. The second, took place a year later. At each time point the following measurements were performed: height, body mass, skin fold, arm circumference; BMI, FFM%, FM% and Frisancho index. FFM(fat free mass), FM(fat mass), muscle mass, TBW(total body water) were evaluated by mans of BIA(bioimpedance). Results: CF children were shorter than healthy children. Stunting affected 18,67% of CF patients at first examination and 21,6% a year later. Underweight was diagnosed in 28% of patients at the beginning and in 41.2% a year after. Underweight was the result of both little FM and scarce muscle mass. Conclusions: Many children with cystic fibrosis suffers from short stature and underweight, which progresses within time. FFM decreases with the disease progress

Opis:
Cysteine proteases (CPs) are responsible for many biochemical processes occurring in living organisms and they have been implicated in the development and progression of several diseases that involve abnormal protein turnover. The activity of CPs is regulated among others by their specific inhibitors: cystatins. The main aim of this review is to discuss the structure-activity relationships of cysteine proteases and cystatins, as well as of some synthetic inhibitors of cysteine proteases structurally based on the binding fragments of cystatins.

Opis:
The civilization diseases of the 21st century are non-infectious disorders, affecting a large part of modern society. They are associated with the significant development of industry and technology, and hence with environmental pollution and an unhealthy lifestyle. These factors have led to the development of many civilization diseases, which currently include: cardiovascular diseases, respiratory diseases, diabetes, obesity, malignant tumors, gastrointestinal diseases, mental disorders and allergic diseases. The development of technologies, including modern therapies and new drugs, resulted in increase in life expectancy. This creates a global problem of an aging population with an increasing number of diseases of the old age, i.e. dementias. In addition, sedentary lifestyles and changing diets are the reasons why more and more people develop metabolic diseases, as well as neurological and cognitive disorders characterized by progressive damage to nerve cells and dementia. Currently, problem on a global scale is also the growing resistance to existing antimicrobial drugs. Therefore, the scientists face many challenges related to searching for the causes of these diseases, their diagnosis and treatment. Scientific research conducted at the Department of Biomedical Chemistry at the Faculty of Chemistry of the University of Gdańsk is part of this research trend. In this publication, we discuss various research topics with the long-term aim of solving the problems associated with the diseases mentioned above. The following chapters are dedicated to (i) looking for new effective fluorophores with diagnostic and anti-cancer activity; (ii) designing of new compounds with antibacterial and antiviral activity and their synthesis; (iii) investigating the mechanisms of amyloid deposit formation by human cystatin C and possibilities of inhibition of this process; (iv) designing and studies of compounds activating the proteasome with the potential to suppress the development of neurodegenerative diseases; (v) designing peptide fibrils and hydrogels as drug carriers; (vi) searching for peptide inhibitors of immune checkpoint as potential drugs for immunotherapy; (vii) studying the mechanism of action of selected herpesviruses by determining the structure of viral proteins and (viii) studying the composition of natural glycans and glycoconjugates in order to better understand the mechanisms of interaction of bacteria with the environment or with the host.
