The main problem of this article is seeking for psychological aspect of the sacrament of marriage. Existential psychologists (i. e. Rollo May, Erich Fromm, Victor E. Franki) show the lack of meaning, person seen as a function and loneliness as the main problems of modern man. In this context the sacrament of marriage is seen as a dialogue between God and man (man and woman) and between man and woman. God says by the sacrament of marriage that man^s and woman"s lives have an unending value (uniąue and unrepeatable). The sacrament of marriage is seen as an unselfish gift of God and man and woman for each other. The most dangerous for this sense and aspect of marriage is pretension attitude and disturbance of the dialogue between wife and husband (i. e. by contraception). For finding out of this, existential and religious, meaning of marriage and for life according to this sense wife and husband should be faithful in prayers and should form an existential attitude „to be".

The main purpose of the article is discussion with psychological conception of understanding the celibacy as a form of sublimation. This interpretation is connected with the psychoanalytical view of personality and sexuality. The personality is there seen as a “closed” system existing for its own purpose; its energy is originally biological and sexual. In such vision the religious and spiritual values are secondary ones. Such interpretation of the celibacy is incorrect. Therefore the author of the article proposes to interpret the celibacy in the light of the relational concept of personality, originated mainly by Joseph R. Nuttin (author of Psychoanalysis and Personality). Personality is seen in this concept as a part of connection “I – world”. The personality is based on the relations with the world and creates them. The sense of life and its quality depends here on self esteem, kind of relations and the interpretation of the world. There are therefore many possible situations and configurations. The relational interpretation of celibacy corresponds very well with religious understanding. It helps to understand much better the nature of the celibacy and the priest’s personality in its dynamic perspective (for example development or overcoming the crisis). This turn is free, what is especially important, from the danger of egocentrism and unclear terms such as unconsciousness, sublimation etc. So it seems very important to understand and interpret the celibacy in terms of the relational concept of personality.

The main purpose of this article was seeking determinants of development of „to be" and „to have"attitudes. There was undertaken an empirical research of 34 persons with using The Scale of „to be" and „to have" attitudes. The results of this research show that people concentrated on „to have" and these concentrated on „to be" do not differ in level of selfesteem. The significant differences between these two groups are connected with a type of orientation toward an external world („to be": open; „to have": closed) and understanding and experience of the values. The results suggest need of further empirical researches and seeking of psychosocial determinants of attitudes „to be" and „to have".

The paper sought to present and order the opinions on "to be" and "to have" extant in psychology. To differentiate between "to be" and "to have" seems to be important as regards both theory and life of an average man. "To be" and "to have" have been dealt with in various psychological contests: in fragments (Cekiera, Chlewiński, Kozielecki, and Oleś), or "to be" and "to have" taken as a whole (Frankl, Fromm, and Popielski). The present paper sought to grasp some common elements extant in the understanding of "to be" and "to have" in the views of different authors. The paper proposes to grasp and interpret various opinions on "to be" and "to have" in the context of the main statements of existential psychology. The representatives of that branch in psychology (Binswanger, Boss, Ellenberger, Minkowski, May, and Tillich) emphasize how important is the fact of man's freedom and responsibility and his "being-in-the-world" (in-der-Welt-Sein). In his "being-in-the-world" man must relate himself to the world of nature (Umwelt), to other people (Mitwelt), to his own experiences (Eigenwelt), and to the spatial perspective and temporal character of his own existence. In the context of those statements of existential psychology, and analyzing mainly the opinions of Fromm and Staehelin, "to be" and "to have" may be taken as two opposing attitudes towards reality. The "to be" attitude is understood in psychology as an attitude in which a person lives through their unity with the whole of the universe, preserving at the same time their own integrity and developing their own abilities. It is a creative attitude connected with a desire to find the truth about reality, to be delighted with the world and to love other people. The "to have" attitude is understood as an attitude characterized by a certain basic sense of apprehension, certain distrust towards reality. This attitude is dominated by egocentrism and pragmatism towards reality. Thus understood "to be" and "to have" attitudes have their cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimension (any differences here are revealed mainly in the motivation of behaviors). The "to be" and "to have" attitudes are manifested in man's relation to the universe, nature, future, inevitable suffering, other people and his own person. According to Erich Fromm, what is decisive in the genesis of the "to be" and "to have" attitudes is the manner in which a person satisfies their existential needs (the "proper" manner forms the "to be" attitude, the "improper" manner forms the "to have" attitude).

The paper present the method of measurement of the attitudes of "to be" and "to have". They are interpreted in philosophical (in existentialism and personalism), psychological and sociological literature either as contradistinctive attitudes or as different hierarchies of values. In the paper "to be" and "to have" are taken to mean attitudes. The attitude "to be" is such a relation to the world which is characterized by a total openness. It has been assumed that the attitudes "to be" and "to have" make the extreme ends of one continuum. On the basis of the theoretical definitions of the attitudes "to be" and "to have" the Scale of "to be" and "to have" Attitudes (SPBiM) has been construed. It is a scale of Likert type made up of 29 statements (one buffer statement, four experimental statements). Additionally, for the sake of a deeper psychological characteristics, Semantic Differential, Value Understanding Test and Value Preference Test have been construed. The array of the above methods has been used in research concerning the sample of 262 persons (131 women, 131 men) who live in large cities. On the basis of the findings obtained in SPBiM (with regard to quartile deviation) a group of 50 persons has been distinguished with the highest intensity of the attitude "to be" (group B), persons with "mediate" (group M-B) and a 50-person group "to have" (group M). Thus distinguished groups B and M differ as to their connotative meanings assigned to 6 aspects of the overall reality understood here as the object of the attitudes "to be" and "to have" (the Universe, nature, temporality, suffering, other people, one's own person). The persons which adopted the "to have" attitude perceive reality as being more "negative", whereas persons oriented towards "to be" see it in a more "positive" manner. The persons with the "to be" and "to have" attitudes differ as to their understanding of values and their preference. "Perfecting oneself" takes a particular place in the preference of values. The attitudes of "to be" and "to have" are psychologically significant and their measurement is plausible. In the light of the above findings it seems that it is necessary to conduct further empirical research of the "to be" and "to have" attitudes, as well as of ties with other psychological variables.

The following article attempts to justify the rationality of religious explications in the context of a paradigm of empirical studies which is widely used nowadays. The Author refers to the opinion of John Paul II on specific mentality of contemporary generations open to empiria and rational arguments. This reference reinforces the assumptions made. To illustrate the problem and bring it into the context of everyday practice, the Author presents an example of a morally good atheist, who is convinced that he owes his own virtue to himself only, excluding – a priori – God’s work. The Author comes to a solution by a comparison of two interpretations: an atheist one – in its concept, closed to non-empiric world and religious one – open to both empiric and non-empiric (supernatural) dimension.
