Opis:
The aim of the study was to determine the physical and chemical properties of the sewage sludge from “Pomorzany” and “Zdroje” municipal wastewater treatment plants located in Szczecin, Poland. The paper presents the outcomes of SEM observation of dried and stabilized sewage sludge. The research on the obtained materials was conducted using reference methods; the images from a scanning electron microscope were used. The amount of sewage sludge produced with the methods of its management was presented. The technology of sludge management is based on its dehydration up to dry weight content of roughly 20% and then drying in contact dryers up to 90–92% dry weight, separately in both plants. Dried sewage sludge is subsequently burned in mechanical grid boilers at “Pomorzany” WWTP. The analyzed materials were characterized by the pH of 7.90–8.42, dry mass and average organic matter content were 18.949% and 68.903%, respectively. The elements identified in the largest amount on the surface of analyzed materials included calcium, iron, phosphorus, sulphur and silicon. The amount of phosphorus ranging from 1.82 to 3.44% indicates the possibility of using sewage sludge as organic fertilizer product or an alternative source of phosphorus.

Opis:
The aim of the research was to determine changes in the elemental composition of concrete under the influence of exposure to hydrogen sulphide in the existing sewage system. The system operator pointed to significant problems with odours in this system. The research included a fragment of the pressure sewage system. The concentration of gases: hydrogen sulphide, ammonia and methane was measured in selected wells. High concentrations of hydrogen sulphide (over 200 ppm) were recorded in the studies. Concrete samples were taken from the internal walls of the well for testing. The samples were used for a microscopic analysis of their composition, using an electron microscope with an EDS attachment. Also, concrete samples from a new sewage well were tested to compare their elemental composition. Gas measurements confirmed the problem of odors, while the analysis of the elemental composition showed a significant proportion of sulphur(from 7.53% to 42.9%) on the surface of the well compared to the reference sample (0%).

Opis:
Professional musicians are required to practice playing instruments for long hours, which often exerts significant impact on their health. Attention should be given to the specificity of playing each instrument, including uncomfortable and sustained body position and repetitive movements causing long-term strain of certain parts of the body. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of long-term playing wind and string instruments on the visual system. Ninety male and female subjects aged 15 to 30 years were included in the study and divided into two groups: musicians (Msc) and non-musicians (nMsc). Significantly less subjects in the Msc group had properly corrected vision, wore optical prescription recommended by an ophthalmologist/optometrist, and/or underwent any eye examination at all in their lifetime, even though more subjects in this group experienced certain asthenopic symptoms. Also, accommodative amplitude got statistically worse under dim illumination conditions, accommodative facility was significantly different between musicians and non-musicians, although there were no differences between the groups when tested in bright illumination. None of the music stands used by the study subjects met the respective standards concerning uniform illumination rates. Playing string and wind instruments is a challenge for the visual system due to the forced body and head positions, and asymmetry between the visual plane and the plane of regard as well as non-uniform illumination in the working environment. However, conditions such as correct working distance and proper tilt of the music stand may be beneficial to the visual system. It is the role of optometrists to properly educate their patients about the importance of appropriate vision correction, especially in dim light and under adverse working conditions and to communicate the impact of such conditions on the visual system.

Opis:
The field test of the sewer system in a rural area was made. The results from two different pressure-gravity systems localized in two settlements were compared. The investigated sewer system operates in serial connection; the sewage from one settlement is pumped to the expansion well in the next one. In both systems, the high concentration of hydrogen sulfide, exceeding 200 ppm, and visible concrete wells corrosion effects were recorded. The samples of corroded concrete from the internal walls of the chosen wells were collected. The results of an electron microscope with the EDS attachment (Energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy) analysis showed a significant sulfur content in a concrete surface layer from 11.2% to 64.2% for the first system and from 7.53% to 42.9% for the second one. The exposure of concrete to high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide and relatively high content of sulfur on the surface of concrete might be a reason for hydrogen sulfide corrosion of concrete in the investigated systems.
