Opis:
The Thar Desert is a part of the arid zone of north-western India. The past geomorphic processes on its territory triggered by orogenesis and climate change generated a diversity of landforms, including structural (volcanic dykes, orogenic ridges, hamadas), denudational (pediplains, pediments, desert pavements), fluvial (alluvial terraces, gullies, gravelly plains of ancient palaeochannels), lacustrine and deltaic, transgressive marine, aeolian (sand dunes) and anthropogenic (such as fields, rock mines and playas, salinas). Ongoing desertification, mass sediment transfer and ground salinization poses major threats to the local ecosystems and occupation habitats. These negative effects are responded to by new agricultural strategies contributing to the economic sustainability of the western Rajasthan.

In December 1997 and June-July 2000, 49 and 113 rhizosphere soil and root mixtures were collected, respectively, to determine the occurrence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of the phylum Glomeromycota in different sites of Israel. Except for five samples taken from under cultivated plants, all the others came from under Ammophila arenaria and Oenothera drummondii colonizing sand dunes adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea. After a continuous cultivation of the mixtures in pot trap cultures with Plantago lanceolata as the plant host up to 2006 and their examination at least twice a year, spores of AMF were found in 41 and 103 cultures with the 1997 and 2000 soil and root mixtures, respectively. The spores represented 30 species and 8 undescribed morphotypes in 7 genera of the Glomeromycota. The AMF most frequently found in Israeli soils were Glomus aurantium and G. constrictum, followed by G. coronatum, G. gibbosum, an undescribed Glomus 178, and Scutellospora dipurpurescens. Up to 2001, 21 species of AMF were known to occur in Israel, and this paper increases this number to 33, of which 11 are new fungi for this country. Moreover, four species, G. aurantium, G. drummondii, G. walkeri and G. xanthium, were recently described as new for science based on spores isolated from Israeli soils. Additionally, the general distribution in the world of the formally described species found in Israel was presented.

155 rhizosphere soil and root mixtures were collected from under Ammophila arenaria colonizing maritime dunes of the island Bornholm (Denmark) to determine arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) of the phylum Glomeromycota co-existing with this plant. In the laboratory, each mixture was divided into two parts. One part was used to establish a pot culture with Plantago lanceolata as the host plant to initiate sporulation of fungi that had not produced spores in field conditions. In the second part, the numerical and species composition of the spore populations of AMF sporulating in the field was determined. Spores of AMF were found in 70 fieldcollected samples and 134 trap cultures. They represented 26 species and six undescribed morphotypes in six genera of the Glomeromycota. Of them, 20 species and three morphotypes in five genera occurred in the field, and 16 species and three morphotypes in five genera were found in trap cultures. The fungi most frequently revealed were members of the genus Glomus; a total of 17 species and six morphotypes of this genus were recognized. Considering the occurrence of spores in both field samples and trap cultures, the fungi most frequently co-occurring with roots of A. arenaria growing in the dunes of Bornholm were G. irregulare (present in 73.6% of samples), followed by Scutellospora dipurpurescens (19.4%) and Archaeospora trappei (10.3%). However, Glomus irregulare mainly sporulated in trap cultures; spores of this fungus were found in only 0.6% of field samples. Other relatively frequently found species were G. aggregatum (9.0%), G. eburneum (7.1%), Paraglomus laccatum (5.2%), and S. armeniaca (6.5%). The species most abundantly sporulating in the field were G. aggregatum (produced 28.36% of all spores isolated), G. badium (11.00%), and S. dipurpurescens (21.55%).

Opis:
Morphological properties of sporocarps and spores of Endogone lactiflua (Zygomycota, Endogonales), a fungus for the first time found in Poland, are described and illustrated. Endogone lactiflua was wet sieved and decanted from a sample taken from the zone extending from the upper soil layer to rhizosphere of Pinus sylvestris growing in a forest dune in northern Poland. The recovered spores mainly occurred in large and compact sporocarps, although both small aggregates with a few spores and single zygosporangia of this fungus were also isolated. Endogone lactiflua is the fourth species of the genus Endogone found to occur in Poland. The distribution of the fungus in the world is also presented.

The ontogenetic development and morphological properties of spores of two species of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (Glomeromycota) of the genus Glomus, G. claroideum and G. spurcum, are described and illustrated. Spores of the two species were not earlier found in Poland, and this paper is the first report of the occurrence of G. spurcum in Europe. In one-species pot cultures with Plantago lanceolata as the host plant, the mycorrhizae of G. claroideum consist of arbuscules, vesicles, as well as intra- and extraradical hyphae staining intensively with trypan blue. Glomus spurcum mycorrhizae were not recognized, because many attempts to establish one-species cultures of this fungus failed. Additionally, the distribution of both the fungi in the world is presented.

Morphological characters of spores of Acaulospora rehmiiand Gigaspora margarita (Glomeromycota) were described and illustrated. Spores of the two species were found in field-collected mixtures of rhizosphere soil and roots collected in Poland. Attempts to produce spores in trap cultures succeeded only with G. margarita. All attempts to establish one-species cultures of the two fungi failed. Gigaspora margarita was for the first time found in Poland and this paper is the first report of the occurrence of A. rehmiiin Europe. The known distribution of the two fungal species in the world is also presented.
Opisano i zilustrowano cechy morfologiczne zarodników Acaulospora rehmiii Gigaspora margarita, arbuskularnych grzybów mikoryzowych z gromady Glomeromycota. Zarodniki obu tych gatunków znaleziono w polowych mieszaninach gleby ryzosferowej i korzeni zebranych w Polsce. Próby otrzymania zarodników tych grzybów w kulturach pułapkowych powiodły się tylko z G. margarita. Wszystkie próby ustanowienia jednogatunkowych kultur obu grzybów nie udały się. Gigaspora margaritaznaleziono po raz pierwszy w Polsce, a A. rehmiipo raz pierwszy w Europie. Przedstawiono również poznane rozmieszczenie obu gatunków w świecie.

The aim of the present study was to determine the frequency of the two polymorphic variants located in intron 4 of the gene coding for insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) in the examined herd of 184 Holstein-Friesian cows and to search for the association between these polymorphisms and the selected milk performance traits. The IGF1R gene polymorphism was identified with PCR-RFLP using the HinfI and Mph1103I restriction enzymes. For the IGF1R/HinfI polymorphism, the highest frequency was found for the BB genotype (0.49), a similar one was in the case of the AB genotype (0.45) and the lowest one was for the AA genotype (0.04). The frequency of alleles was as follows: allele A – 0.28 and allele B – 0.72. Statistical analysis showed that the analysed polymorphism significantly affected milk yield, milk protein yield (P≤0.01) and milk fat yield (P≤0.05), favouring the BB genotype. For the IGF1R/Mph1103I polymorphism, no individuals with the AA genotype were recorded.Ahigh frequency of allele B (0.94) was found. No significant effect of the IGF1R/Mph1103I polymorphic site on the yield of milk, fat and protein was shown. Statistically significant differences (P≤0.05) were observed only for the percentage content of milk fat and protein with indication on the positive effect of the BB genotype.
Celem niniejszej pracy było określenie frekwencji dwóch wariantów polimorficznych zlokalizowanych w intronie 4. genu kodującego receptor insulinopodobnego czynnika wzrostu typu 1 (IGF1R) w badanym stadzie 184 krów rasy holsztyńsko-fryzyjskiej oraz poszukiwanie związku pomiędzy tymi polimorfizmami a wybranymi cechami użytkowości mlecznej. Polimorfizm genu IGF1R identyfikowano metodą PCR-RFLP z zastosowaniem enzymów restrykcyjnych: HinfI oraz Mph1103I. W układzie IGF1R/HinfI stwierdzono najwyższą frekwencję genotypu BB (0,49), zbliżoną w przypadku genotypu AB (0,45) a najniższą dla genotypu AA – 0,04. Frekwencja alleli kształtowała się następująco: allel A – 0,28, allel B – 0,72.Analiza statystyczna wykazała, że analizowany polimorfizm wpływał istotnie na wydajność mleczną, wydajność białka (P≤0,01) oraz tłuszczu (P≤0,05) w mleku, faworyzując genotyp BB. W układzie IGF1R/Mph1103I odnotowano brak osobników o genotypie AA. Stwierdzono wysoką frekwencję allelu B (0,94). Nie wykazano istotnego wpływu polimorficznego IGF1R/Mph1103I na wydajność mleka, tłuszczu i białka. Statystycznie istotne różnice (P≤0,05) zaobserwowano jedynie w % zawartości tłuszczu i białka w mleku ze wskazaniem na pozytywny wpływ genotypu BB.

Opis:
Skręt macicy to schorzenie występujące u prawie wszystkich zwierząt domowych dość rzadko, z wyjątkiem bydła. Problem ten występuje najczęściej w drugiej połowie ciąży lub w trakcie porodu jako przyczyna niestosunku porodowego. Opisywany jest jako skręcenie się narządu prostopadłe do jego osi długiej. Nie wyjaśniono w wystarczający sposób etiologii tej choroby, wydaje się jednak, iż czynnikiem ryzyka predysponującym do skrętu jest niestabilność ciężarnej macicy. Zewnętrzne objawy kliniczne nie są specyficzne. Diagnozy problemu dokonuje się poprzez badanie przez pochwę, badanie rektalne oraz metodami obrazowania jamy brzusznej. U zwierząt gospodarskich leczenie ukierunkowane jest na pozostawienie funkcjonującej macicy, w związku z czym postępowanie chirurgiczne nie jest techniką z wyboru. Wykorzystuje się takie metody, jak ręczne odkręcanie narządu przez pochwę, użycie drążka odkręcającego oraz przetaczanie zwierzęcia przez jego oś długą. Jeżeli przedstawione sposoby okażą się nieskuteczne, wykonywany jest zabieg operacyjny. U psów i kotów postępowaniem z wyboru jest leczenie chirurgiczne. Do niedawna preferowanym postępowaniem u małych zwierząt był zabieg usunięcia macicy wraz z jajnikami, co uniemożliwiało dalszy rozród tych zwierząt. Obecnie stosuje się również nową technikę – jednostronne usunięcie jajnika i rogu macicy.
Uterine torsion is a non-common problem in almost all domestic animals other than cattle. It occurs mainly in the second half of pregnancy or at parturition as a cause of dystocia. Torsion is described as twisting of the uterus perpendicular to its long axis. The etiology of this condition is still not well known but it seems that instability of the gravid uterus is a possible risk factor. External signs are nonspecific. The condition is diagnosed by vaginal inspection, rectal palpation and abdominal imaging. In farm animals the treatment is aimed at the saving of the uterus and to this reason, non-surgical methods are mainly preferred. They include manual detorsion per vaginam, use of detorsion rod and rolling the animal along its longitudinal axis. If ineffective, surgical methods are applied. Conversely, in dogs and cats surgical methods are the treatment of choice. Until recently the total ovariohysterectomy was preferred which was terminating animals’ reproductive ability. Now new technique, unilateral ovariohysterectomy – ovariocornuectomy is being used as well.
