    The purpose of this study was to determine the contemporary changes of precipitation and nival conditions in the high-mountain area of Tatras. Main features of thermal climate changes are the background of this investigation. The study makes use of the daily data from the weather station on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 1966-2006. Various climate characteristics were considered. The increase of the air temperature is not accompanied by significant changes in precipitation conditions. The signs of the more continentality climate features are also visible. The warming and a slight decrease in precipitation and the evolution of circulation conditions significantly influence the length of the period with the snow cover and not significantly its depth.

    W artykule omówiono wybrane aspekty badań klimatu Warszawy prowadzonych przez pracowników Zakładu Klimatologii Wydziału Geografii i Studiów Regionalnych Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego. Klimat miast, głównie Warszawy był jednym z ważniejszych zagadnień badawczych podejmowanych w tym ośrodku akademickim. Istotne znaczenie miało uruchomienie z inicjatywy prof. Wincentego Okołowicza stacji meteorologicznej położonej w kampusie głównym UW, w części śródmiejskiej Warszawy. W opracowaniu przedstawiono główne zagadnienia badawcze realizowane w ramach prac indywidualnych i zespołowych oraz prac zleconych i projektów. Zestawiono wybrane prace dotyczące poruszanych zagadnień. Wska-zano na znaczenie studenckich prac dyplomowych w badaniach klimatu Warszawy. Przytoczono niektóre wyniki badań miejskiej wyspy ciepła, jej intensywności oraz uwarunkowań. Wyniki potwierdzają znane prawidłowości, ale jednocześnie ukazują specyfikę klimatu Warszawy wynikającą z jej położenia, a także indywidualnych cech fizjograficznych i układu architektonicznego miasta. W związku z postępującym procesem urbanizacji zagadnieniem kluczowym, szczególnie w kontekście współczesnego wzrostu temperatury powietrza, są działania ukierunkowane na zmniejszenie ekspozycji na obciążenia termiczne oraz ochronę przed zagrożeniami związanymi z meteorologicznymi zjawiskami ekstremalnymi występującymi głównie w półroczu ciepłym.
    The article discusses selected aspects of Warsaw’s climate research conducted by employees of the Department of Climatology of the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw. The climate of cities, mainly Warsaw’s climate, is one of the most important research issues undertaken in this academic center. Of particular importance was establishing, on the initiative of Prof. Wincenty Okołowicz, a meteorological station located on the main campus of the University of Warsaw, in downtown Warsaw. The study presents the main research issues carried out as individual and team works as well as commissioned works and projects. Selected works on the concerned issues are presented. The importance of student diploma theses in research into Warsaw's climate is also pointed out. Some of the results of the research of the urban heat island, its intensity and conditions are shown. The results confirm the known regularities, but at the same time show the specificity of Warsaw’s climate, resulting from its location, as well as the individual physiographic features and architectural layout of the city. As the urbanization progresses, actions of key importance, especially in the context of the contemporary increase in air temperature, are aimed at reducing exposure to thermal stress and protection against risks related to extreme weather events occurring mainly in the warm half-year.

    In this paper, results of research concerning circulation conditions favouring the occurrence of elear and cloudy days in Poland are presented. An analysis of the mean pressure field over North Atlantic and Europe on such days was performed, differences between the mean pressure on such days and the mean pressure from all the days of the period 1966-2000 were determined. The pressure field was characterised by mean daily values taken from grid nodes from the area with (p 30°-70°N and X 40°W-60°E (NCEP/NCAR database). The relation between the am ount of cloudiness over Poland and pressure was estim ated by means of linear correlation coefficient.

    Analysis of time series was performed of cloudiness, air temperature and precipitation for the years 1951-2000, the data used representing lowland Poland. The properties of the temporal course of these elements of climate and the interrelations between their variability in time have been determined. The strength of dependence of precipitation and temperature upon the magnitude of cloudiness in the annual cycle has been assessed with the linear correlation coefficient. The essential climate-forming role of cloudiness has been confirmed. The magnitude of cloudiness over Poland explains up to 70% of variability of temperature and precipitation. These interrelations are the strongest in the warmer half of the year. Atmospheric circulation and cloudiness explain up to 85% of variability of the climate elements studied.

    The purpose of the report is to determine trends in thermal conditions in the Polish part of the Tatra Mountains. The results of studies were compared with the results of analogous analyses, carried out for the area of lowland Poland. The study makes use of the data from the weather stations in Zakopane and on Kasprowy Wierch Mt. from the years 19512006, mainly from 1966-2006. The thermal conditions in lowland Poland was determined on the basis of the area-averaged time series (45 stations). Various thermal characteristics were considered. The increase of the rate of upward trend in temperature at the turn of the 21st century, as well as the change of the seasonal distribution of the warming in comparison with the preceding long-term periods, have been documented. Symptoms of increase of the thermal continentality have also been observed.

    W 2013 roku będziemy obchodzić 25 rocznicę powstania Międzyrządowego Panelu do spraw Zmian Klimatu IPCC. W artykule dokonano przeglądu najważniejszych osiągnięć i porażek tej międzynarodowej organizacji. Badania stymulowane przez IPCC wniosły istotny wkład do naszej wiedzy o klimacie globalnym. IPCC zainspirował liczne badania, w tym także mające na celu doskonalenie narzędzia jakim są modele klimatyczne. Dzięki publikowanym Raportom IPCC wzrosła świadomość możliwych skutków działalności człowieka w zakresie zmian klimatu w skali globalnej, regionalnej i lokalnej, a także problemów ekologicznych i społeczno-gospodarczych jakie zmiany te mogą spowodować. Jednak główne zadanie IPCC wciąż czeka na realizację. Ze względu na polityczną i ekonomiczną różnorodność opinii, a także toczącą się w tle szeroką i wciąż otwartą dyskusję naukową, dotyczącą przyczyn i uwarunkowań zmian klimatycznych, nowa konwencja w sprawie zmian klimatu nie została podpisana. W ramach corocznych Konferencji Stron ONZ nie znaleziono akceptowalnych rozwiązań i narzędzi w celu ograniczenia emisji gazów cieplarnianych. Globalne społeczeństwo musi zintensyfikować wysiłki na rzecz wypracowania kompromisu w tym ważnym problemie dla współczesnego świata.
    In 2013 we will celebrate 25 anniversary of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The paper summarises successes and defeats of this international body. The research stimulated by IPCC have brought significant input to our knowledge of global climate. IPCC inspired also researchers to create more and more precise climate models. The IPCC reports increased also the conscience of possible consequences of human activity for climate change in global, regional and local scales. However, the main task of IPCC still waits for realization. Because of diversity of political and economic opinions the new Convention on Climate Changeis not signed. Annual United Nations Climate Summits can't find wildly acceptable solutions and tools to reduce emission of greenhouse gases. The global society must intensify efforts to develop compromise in this crucial problem of contemporary world. Otherwise, we must face facts of serious ecological, social and economical problems caused by climate change.

    This article presents the results of studies conducted on the variability of thermal and precipitation conditions in Poland in the second half of the 20th century, especially taking into consideration periods which were unfavorable for agricultural production. Averaged spatial temperatures and precipitation totals from consecutive years 1951 to 2000 were used. A significant increase in spring temperatures was noted, while the winters also became warmer. This had a significant effect upon the change of the thermal vegetation period's duration. No changing trends were noted with regard to the amount of precipitation.The analysis of the seasonal structure during the anomalous years, with regard to temperature and the amount of precipitation, made it possible to pinpoint years particularly unfavorable for agricultural production. There was a certain repeatability of unfavorable conditions, tied to the existence of a relatively stable 8-year cycle of temperature change, which was especially noticeable during the wintertime. During the last two decades of the 20th century, high temperature values, occurring also in the summertime, in combination with insufficient precipitation, contributed to the occurrence of dry spells and even periods of drought. The occurrence of dry spells during the vegetation period and the extreme shortening of the vegetation period have a significant effect upon the amount of grain crop production.
